Das in den Jahren 1871–1891 nach Plänen Gott­
fried Sempers und Carl von Hasenauers errichtete
Kunsthistorische Museum zählt zu den bedeu­
tendsten und eindrucksvollsten Museumsbauten
des 19. Jahr­hunderts. Geplant wurde es im Zuge
der Erweiterung der Hofburg zusammen mit
seinem „Zwilling“, dem gegenüberliegenden
Naturhistorischen Museum, und der Neuen Burg
am Heldenplatz. Kaiserlicher Repräsentationswille
und der Glaube an die dynastische Tradition ermög­
lichten gigantische finanzielle und künstlerische
Anstrengungen. Mit der lange ersehnten Eröffnung
1891 konnten die über Jahrhunderte gewachsenen
und mitunter weit verstreuten habsburgischen
Sammlungen nun erstmals gemeinsam in ange­
messenem Rahmen präsentiert werden. Der Bestand
an ägyptischen Altertümern, antiker Skulptur, Kunst­
handwerk sowie Gemälden des 15. bis 18. Jahr­
hunderts sucht seinesgleichen – zusammen mit
dem prachtvollen Monumentalbau eröffnet sich
Ihren Gästen heute eine einzigartige, alle Sinne
stimulierende Welt.

Kunsthistorisches Museum
The Kunsthistorisches Museum was erected in
1871–1891 according to the plans of Gottfried
Semper and Carl von Hasenauer and is one of
the most distinguished and impressive museum
buildings of the 19th century. It was designed in
the course of the Hofburg’s extension together
with its ‘twin’, the Naturhistorisches Museum
opposit and the Neue Burg at Heldenplatz.
Imperial will for representation and the faith in
dynastic tradition allowed for gigantic financial
and artistic efforts. When the museum was even­
tually opened in 1891, the sometimes far-flung
collections of the Habsburgs could finally be
presented in an appropriate way. The stock of
Egyptian antiquities, antique sculptures, craftwork
and paintings of the 15th to the 18th century is
unique – together with the gorgeous monumental
building it opens an unbelievable world, which
stimulates all human senses.

The impressive Entrance Hall leads to a series of
wonderfully decorated rooms. You may choose to
welcome your guests with a cocktail reception held
in the Entrance Hall. This area offers access to the
Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection – or use the
gallery of antique busts for small receptions and
as an effective entrée to the Collection of Greek
and Roman Antiquities.

Galerie, 1. Stock
In Treppenhaus und Kuppelhalle verdichten sich
barockisierende Dekorationselemente zu einem
der feierlichsten und kostbarsten Innenräume der
europäischen Museumsarchitektur. Die Deckenund Wandmalereien im Treppenhaus stammen
u. a. von Mihály von Munkácsy, Hans Makart und
Gustav Klimt. Die imposante Treppenlandschaft
mit Antonio Canovas Theseus-Gruppe eignet
sich mit zwei bequem zu bespielenden Zwischen­
podesten bestens zur Begrüßung Ihrer Gäste sowie
für Tanz- oder Musikeinlagen.
Der im 1. Stock liegende Teil des Treppenhauses
ist der ideale Platz, um Ihren Gästen einen Will­
kommenscocktail anzubieten. Von hier aus gelangt
man auf kurzen Wegen in die Gemäldegalerie.
In Kombination mit der Kuppelhalle finden hier
außerdem Galadinners oder Empfänge statt.
Main Staircase
The Main Staircase and the cupola hall combine
baroque decorative features to one of the most
ceremonial and most precious interior rooms of all
European architecture of museums. The original
ceiling and wall paintings are amongst others by
Mihály von Munkácsy, Hans Makart and Gustav
Klimt. Antonio Canova’s statue of “Theseus Slaying
the Centaur” is the focal point of the landing and
is particularly well suited for welcoming your
guests personally, or for starting the evening with
a performance of music or dancing.
Gallery, First Floor
The larger landing, along the Main Staircase, on
the first floor, opens into the Picture Gallery and
the Cupola Hall which is the ideal location for
a cocktail to welcome your guests. This location
within the 1st floor can – in combination with
the Cupola Hall – also be rented for dinners or
receptions.

Cupola Hall
Die Kuppelhalle ist architektonischer Höhepunkt
und machtvoller Ausdruck kaiserlicher Selbstin­
szenierung. Reliefdekorationen mit den Bildnissen
der Kaiser Maximilian I., Karl V., Rudolf II., Karl VI.
und Franz Joseph I. und der Erzherzöge Ferdi­nand (II.), Albrecht (VII.) und Leopold Wilhelm
weisen auf die profiliertesten Mäzene des Hauses
Habsburg hin. Festlich ausgeleuchtet entfalten
die Marmor-, Kunstmarmor- und Stuckober­
flächen erst am Abend ihr ganzes Potential. Die
breite, am Rand der oktogonalen Halle gelegene
Fensterfront bietet einen stimmungsvollen Aus­
blick auf den Maria Theresien-Platz und rundet
das Ambiente kongenial ab.
The Cupola Hall is the architectural highlight of the
building and the powerful expression of imperial
self-dramatisation. The relief decorations presenting
the emperors Maximilian I, Charles V, Rudolf II,
Charles VI and Franz Joseph I and the archdukes
Ferdinand (II), Albrecht (VII) and Leopold Wilhelm
show the most distinguished patrons of the Habs­
burgs. The marble, the artificial marble and the
stucco surfaces unfold their complete potential
only at night when they are festively lit. The wide,
tall windows at the edge of the octagonal hall offer
an impressive view at the Maria Theresien-Platz
and complete the great ambiance.

Museum für Völkerkunde
Das Museum für Völkerkunde gehört zu den be­
deutendsten Museen seiner Art. Hervorgegangen
aus der Anthropologisch-Ethnographischen Ab­
teilung des Naturhistorischen Museums, befindet
sich das 1928 gegründete Museum seither im
Corps de Logis der „Neuen Burg“. Die Bestände
des Museums wurden seit dem frühen 16. Jahr­
hundert gesammelt und kamen später über Schloss
Ambras (Tirol) in die k. k. Hofsammlungen.
Die prachtvolle Säulenhalle und der Vortragsraum
können für Veranstaltungen unterschiedlichster Art
angemietet werden. Führungen durch die Samm­
lungen oder durch aktuelle Sonderausstellungen
ergänzen Ihr Eventprogramm.

Museum of Ethnology
The Museum of Ethnology is one of the most
important of its kind in the world. It developed out
of the Anthropological-Ethnographical Department
of the Naturhistorisches Museum, and has been
housed in this part of the Hofburg Palace since
1928. Its earliest objects were already acquired in
the 16th century, and found their way via Ambras
Castle in Tyrol to the Imperial Collection in Vienna.
The sumptuous Hall of Columns and the Lecture
Hall can be rented for various events. Guided tours
of the Collection or of current special exhibitions
complete the agenda of your event.

Die feudale Säulenhalle des Corps de Logis bildet
ein herrliches Ambiente für Galadinner, Cocktails,
Empfänge, Lesungen oder Konzerte. Aber auch für
die Präsentation von Büchern, Firmenprodukten
und Pressekonferenzen bietet der mit Oberlicht
versehene repräsentative Raum den geeigneten
Rahmen. Über eine Prunkstiege gelangen Sie
zur Galerie im Mezzanin – sie kann ebenfalls für
Cocktail-Empfänge verwendet werden.
Der Vortragssaal im Erdgeschoß bietet sich für Ver­
sammlungen und Vorträge, Seminare oder Work­
shops an; Kaffeepausen und Catering sind in einem
holzvertäfelten Raum direkt vor dem Vortragssaal
möglich.

The sumptuous Hall of Columns provides an
unforgettable setting for gala dinners, cocktails,
receptions, readings, or concerts. Additionally this
representative room, furnished with a glass ceiling,
proves equally suited as a venue for the presentation
of books, companies, or their products, or press
conferences. A grand staircase leads up to the
landing on the mezzanine which can also be used
for receptions.

Um die Sammlungen in der Neuen Burg zu
er­reichen, durchschreiten Sie den – am Abend
besonders imposanten – Heldenplatz. Den durch
den Panoramablick auf Kunst- und Natur­histori­
sches Museum, Rathaus, Burgtheater und Parla­
ment eingestimmten Eintretenden erwartet im
Innern das letzte großartige Zeugnis historistischer
Raumschöpfung: Man gelangt in ein von hellen
Mate­rialien und zauberhafter Gesamtstimmung
ge­prägtes Treppenhaus. Obgleich das Gebäude
nicht als Museum geplant war, wurden Teile noch
im Kaiserreich für die Präsentation habsburgischen
Kunstbesitzes genutzt. Heute bietet das Gebäude
drei sehr unterschiedlichen Sammlungen einen
attraktiven architektonischen Rahmen: der Hof­
jagd- und Rüstkammer, dem Ephesos Museum und
schließlich der Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente.

Neue Burg
In order to reach the collections of the Neue Burg
you cross Heldenplatz, which is especially impressive
at night. Getting the right mood by looking at
the Kunst- and Naturhistorisches Museum, the
city hall, the Burgtheater and the Parliament, the
visitor will be able to see the last, great evidence
of historic architecture: you get to a staircase,
which is distinguished by bright materials and an
enchanting atmosphere. Although it was originally
not intended as a museum, some parts of the
building have always been used for the presen­tation
of the Habsburgs’ art collection, even in imperial
times. Today the building offers three very different
collections an attractive architectural setting:
the Collection of Arms and Armour, the Ephesos
Museum and also the Collection of Ancient Musical
Instruments.

The museum’s highlight is the so-called ”Parthian
Monument”, probably part of an antique altar
erected at Ephesos during the Hellenistic Period.
Today, it serves as a spectacular setting for con­

Österreichisches Theater­
museum im Palais Lobkowitz
Das Palais Lobkowitz ist der erste bedeutende
barocke Stadtpalast Wiens, der nach der Zweiten
Türkenbelagerung von 1683 erbaut worden ist.
Den Mittelrisalit mit dem Hauptportal entwarf
der große Barockarchitekt Johann Bernhard Fischer
von Erlach. Nach mehrmaligem Besitzerwechsel
gelangte das Palais 1745 in das Eigentum der
Familie Lobkowitz, deren Mitglieder zeitweise eine
eigene Musikkapelle unterhielten und Konzerte
veranstalteten. Da Fürst Lobkowitz der Widmungs­
träger der 3. Symphonie Beethovens war, erhielt
der Festsaal des Hauses den Namen „Eroica-Saal“.
Zur Zeit des Wiener Kongresses war das Palais
ein Zentrum rauschender Feste – im Sinne dieser
Tradition besteht auch heute wieder die Möglich­
keit, Veran­staltungen in einem der schönsten
Barockpalais Wiens durchzuführen.

Austrian Theatre Museum at
Palais Lobkowitz
The Lobkowitz Palace was the first important town
palace built in Vienna after 1683. The central part
with its big main portal was designed by Johann
Fischer von Erlach, the great baroque architect.
After several changes of possession the Lobkowitzs,
a very musical family, took over the palace in 1745.
From time to time the family kept their own band
and promoted concerts. As Prince Lobkowitz was
the dignitary of Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the
hall was given the name the “Eroica-Hall”. During
the Congress of Vienna, many magnificent balls
and receptions were held at the palace. Continuing
this tradition, we offer you the opportunity to
stage events in one of Vienna’s most beautiful
baroque palaces.

When you enter the Egyptian and
Near Eastern Collection, the
Vestibule’s imposing architecture
continues: Grand ancient columns,
Egyptian-style wall decorations,
showcases and ornaments provide
a spectacular setting for a collection,
whose stock of monuments of the
Old Kingdom count among the
largest and most qualitative in its
field. Grave goods and sarcophagi,
precious papyri, inscriptions and
reliefs are evidence of religion
and daily life in ancient Egypt.
Sculptures and inscriptions from
ancient South Arabia form the core
of the Near Eastern Collection.

eröffnung 2005 in neuem Licht er­
strahlende Bestand an Skulpturen,
Bronzen, Statuetten, Vasen, Gläsern
und Goldschmiedearbeiten aus
dem 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis um
1000 n. Chr. gehört in seiner Viel­
falt zu den bedeutendsten seiner
Art. Die Sammlung von Prunk­
kameen – unter anderem mit der
unter Kaiser Rudolf II. erworbenen
Gemma Augustea – und die völker­
wanderungszeitlichen sowie mittel­
alter­lichen Schatzfunde besitzen
Weltgeltung.

Roman Antiquities
Since its sparkling reopening in
2005 does the stock of sculptures,
bronzes, statuettes, vases, glasses and
gold works from the 3rd century BC.
till about 1000 AD belong in its
variety to the most distinguished
of its kind. The collection of spec­
tacular antique cameos, including
the famous Gemma Augustea
acquired by Emperor Rudolf II,
and the treasure troves dating from
the period of the great migrations
and the early Middle Ages are
recognized worldwide.

Münzkabinett
Die Sammlung von Gemälden des
15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts nimmt
das gesamte, von der zentralen
Kuppelhalle dominierte Hauptge­
schoß ein. Italienische, spanische
und französische Malerei auf der
einen – deutsche, altniederländi­
sche, flämische und holländische
Malerei auf der anderen Seite.
Spektakuläre Höhepunkte machen
den Gang durch die Räumlichkeiten
zu einem sinnlichen und intellektu­
ellen Genuss. Eine unübertroffene
Dichte an Gemälden Pieter Bruegels
d. Ä., wichtige Zeugnisse der Kunst
Albrecht Dürers, die unvergleichlich
große Vielfalt an Werken flämischer
Barockmalerei – hier ganz beson­
ders Rubens und Anton van Dyck,
schließlich sollen auch Vermeer
und Rembrandt nicht unerwähnt
bleiben. Die zweite Hälfte der
Galerieräume dominiert die italieni­
sche Malerei: Tizian, Veronese und
Tintoretto – die großen Köpfe des
venezianischen Cinquecento, Indi­
vidualisten wie Parmigianino und
Lorenzo Lotto; Caravaggio, einer
der Wegbereiter barocker Ästhetik,
und schließlich die noch immer
verblüffenden, präzisen Stadtan­
sichten Bernardo Bellottos.
The collection of paintings from
the 15th to the 18th century takes
up the entire main floor, which is
dominated by the central cupola
hall. Italian, Spanish and French
paintings on the one side and
German, Early Netherlandish,
Flemish and Dutch paintings on
the other side. Spectacular high­
lights make the walk through the
locations a sensual and intellectual
pleasure. An unexcelled number
of paintings by Pieter Bruegel
the Elder, important evidence of
Albrecht Dürer’s art, the incom­
parably large variety of Flemish
baroque works – especially Rubens
and Anthonis van Dyck, finally also
Vermeer and Rembrandt should
be mentioned. The second half of
the picture gallery is dominated by
Italian paintings: Titian, Veronese
and Tintoretto – the great artists
of the Venetian “Cinquecento”,
individualists like Parmigianino and
Lorenzo Lotto; Caravaggio, one of
the pioneers of baroque aesthetics,
and finally Bernardo Bellottos’ still
amazingly precise townscape.

der teuersten Variante modischer
Kleidung, lernt Spielarten von Hieb-,
Stich- oder Feuerwaffen und die
ausgefeilte Technik der Turnier­aus­stattung kennen. Die hohe
handwerkliche und künstlerische
Qualität der Stücke beruht auf
dem Repräsentationsanspruch
der ehemaligen Besitzer: Nahezu
alle westeuropäischen Souveräne
vom 15. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhun­
dert sind mit Objekten vertreten.
Handelt es sich um maßgeschnei­
derte Rüstungen, so lassen sich
Statur und Größe so manches
Protagonisten der europäischen
Geschichte rekonstruieren. Keine
andere Rüstkammer der abend­
ländischen Welt kann mit einer
solchen Dichte an qualitätvollen
und lückenlos dokumentierten
Stücken aufwarten.
Collection of Arms and
Armour
You pass harnesses, the most
expensive option of fashionable
clothing, you get to know versions
of batons, stabbing weapons or
firearms and the sophisticated
equipment for tournaments. The
pieces’ high technical and artistic
quality relies on the former owner’s
demand
of representation: Almost all West
European sovereigns dating from
the 15th to the 20th century are re­
presented by objects. If it is tailored
armour, one can reconstruct the
figure and the size of many a
protagonist of European history.
No other armoury of the western
world can come up with such a
great variety of qualitative and
completely documented pieces.
Collection of Ancient
Musical Instruments
The condition, number and variety
of the objects are unexcelled world
wide: Lutes, violins – a very special
rarity is one sample of Leopold
Mozart’s holdings –, hunting horns,
trombones, guitars, kettledrums
and fortepianos. Each of the twelve
halls of the collection is dedicated
to different periods of Austrian
musical history (Late Renaissance
and Baroque are especially strong
represented) or assigned to a
certain musician.

Weltweit unübertroffen sind Zu­
stand, Anzahl und Vielfalt der
Objekte: Lauten, Violinen – als ganz
besondere Rarität ein Exemplar aus
dem Besitz Leopold Mozarts –,
Jagdhörner, Posaunen, Gitarren,
Kesselpauken und Hammerflügel.
Jeder der zwölf Sammlungssäle ist
einer musikhistorischen Epoche
(Spätrenaissance und Barock sind
besonders dicht vertreten) oder
einer Musikerpersönlichkeit zuge­
ordnet.
Die Ausgrabungen auf dem Gebiet
der antiken Stadt Ephesos, die
mit dem Artemistempel eines der
Sieben Weltwunder besaß und in
römischer Zeit zur Hauptstadt der
Provinz Asia aufstieg, werden seit
1895 von österreichischen Wissen­
schaftlern geleitet. Bis 1906 ge­
langten aussagekräftige Fundstücke
in die kaiserliche Antikensammlung:
Säulen, Kapitelle, Mosaike, die
Skulptur eines griechischen Athleten
und das Relief einer kämpferischen
Amazone, bronzene Leuchter und
Relikte antiker Souvenirliebe. Das
detaillierte Stadtmodell rundet
den Einblick in Charakter und
Schatzkammer
Treasury
Bedeutung der antiken Stadt ge­
winnbringend ab. Prunkstück des
Ephesos Museums ist das sog.
„Parthermonument“. Die monu­
men­tale Reliefserie war möglicher­
weise Teil eines hellenistischen
Altares.
Ephesos Museum
The excavations in the area of the
antique town Ephesos have been
conducted by Austrian archaeolo­
gists since 1895. It was here that
the Artemis Temple, one of the
Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World, stood. Roman times saw
Ephesus become capital of the
Province of Asia. Up to the year
1906, numerous meaningful found
pieces got to the Imperial Collection
of Greek and Roman Antiquities:
columns, capitals, mosaics, a
sculpture of a Greek athlete and a
relief of a fighting Amazon, bronze
candlesticks and relicts of antique
love for souvenirs. The detailed
model of the town tops the insight
into the character and the relevance
of the antique town off. The center­
piece of the Ephesos Museum is
the so-called “Parthian Monument”.
The monumental series of reliefs
was probably part of a Hellenistic
altar.
Die Weltliche Schatzkammer bietet
ein einzigartiges Panorama von mehr
als tausend Jahren europäischer
Geschichte. Hier befindet sich
der wichtigste Kronschatz aus
dem Mittelalter: die Insignien und
Kleinodien des Heiligen Römischen

Objekte erzählen vom mittelalter­
lichen Reliquienkult, vom habs­
burgischen Katholizismus zur Zeit
der Gegenreformation, von nach­
barocker Herrscherfrömmigkeit
und vom österreichischen Volks­
glauben.
The Secular Treasury offers a
unique panorama covering a
millennium of European history.
This is the home of the most
important collection of medieval
royal objects: the insignia and
jewels of the Holy Roman Empire,
including the Imperial Crown and
the Holy Lance. Further highlights
include the Crown of Emperor
Rudolf II (which later on became
Crown of the Austrian Empire),
as well as the vestments and other
precious items of the Order of the
Golden Fleece. The Ecclesiastical
Treasury offers a fascinating journey
through the history of art, piety
and religion. The items here tell of
the medieval cult of relics, of the
Catholicism of the Habsburgs to
the era of the Counterreformation,
of rulers’ post-baroque piety and
Austrian folk religiosity.

In der Wagenburg in Schönbrunn
befindet sich der Kernbestand des
einstigen Fuhrparks des Wiener Ho­
fes. Nach dem Ende der Monarchie
1918 blieben rund 100 Wagen,
Schlitten, Sänften und Tragsessel
mit dazugehörigen Zug- und
Reitgeschirren und Schabracken
erhalten. Zu den Höhepunkten
zählen der vergoldete „Imperial­
wagen“, der Karussellwagen Maria
Theresias, der Kinderwagen von
Napoleons Sohn, der Schwarze
Leichenwagen des Wiener Hofs,
das Leiblandaulett von Kaiserin
Elisabeth („Sisi“) und das einzig
erhaltene Hofautomobil von 1914.
Eine Auswahl von Kutschen der
Fürsten von Thurn und Taxis wurde
jüngst als Dauerleihgabe in die
Sammlung aufgenommen.

Museum of Ethnology
The “Wagenburg” building at
Schönbrunn is home to the core
of the former vehicle fleet of the
Viennese Court. Following the
demise of the monarchy in 1918,
around 100 carriages, sleds, sedan
chairs and litters along with their
associated harnesses, saddles and
caparisons remained. The high­
lights of the Carriage Collection in­
clude the gilded “Imperial Carriage”,
the Golden Carousel Carriage of
Maria Theresia, the Child’s Phaeton
of Napoleon’s son, the Black Hearse
of the Viennese court, the personal
Landaulet of Empress Elisabeth and
the only preserved Court Auto­
mobile of 1914. A selection of
carriages of the Princes Thurn and
Taxis has recently been in­cluded
in the collection on permanent
loan.
Das Museum für Völkerkunde ge­
hört zu den bedeutendsten Museen
seiner Art. Hervorgegangen aus der
Anthropologisch-Ethnographischen
Abteilung des Naturhistorischen
Museums, befindet sich das 1928
gegründete Museum seither im
Corps de Logis der „Neuen Burg“.
Die Bestände des Museums wurden
seit dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert
gesammelt und kamen später
über Schloss Ambras (Tirol) in die
k. k. Hofsammlungen. Es beher­
bergt über 200.000 ethnografische
Gegenstände, 25.000 historische
Fotografien, 136.000 Druckwerke
und über 300 Kilometer Film
zu Geschichte, Kultur und Alltags­
leben vorwiegend außereuropäi­
scher Völker. Parallel zur General­
sanierung seit 2004 werden seit
Mai 2007 wieder Sonderausstel­
lungen gezeigt, seit 2008 wird die
Süd-, Südostasien und Himalaya­
länder-Sammlung in neuem Licht
präsentiert.

The Museum of Ethnology in
Vienna is one of the most sig­
nificant ethnological museums
in the world. Emerged from the
Anthropologic-Ethnographic
Department of the Naturhistori­
sches Museum, the museum,
that was founded in 1928, is now
located at the Corps de Logis of
the “Neue Burg”. Its holdings have
been collected since the early 16th
century and got to the imperial
collections via Ambras Castle
(Tyrol). The collections comprise
more than 200,000 ethnographic
objects, 25,000 historical photo­
graphs, 136,000 printed works,
and over 300 kilometres of film
about the history, culture, and
quotidian life of predominantly
non-European peoples. Parallel
to the general renovation since
2004 the museum has shown
special exhibitions since May 2007
and since 2008 the Collection of
South and Southeast Asia, as well
as the collection of the Himalaya
countries are presented and shine
in new splendour.

The Austrian Theatre Museum

central to the history of theatre −
from spoken theatre to dance, from
puppet shows to cinema and from
pantomime to opera. It assembles
more than 100,000 hand sketches,
nearly 1,000 stage prop and stage
architecture models, over 700,000
photos, around 2,000 pieces of
memorabilia about famous actors
and actresses, authors and com­
posers, autographs of figures
including Beethoven, Goethe and
Mahler, Klimt’s painting “Nuda
Veritas” and costumes, some of
which were made according to
designs by Kokoschka and Wotruba.
The permanent collection is cur­
rently closed for renovation; but
special exhibitions will still be
shown.
