Location profiles: The County Seat Roth
Along the old commerce route leading from Nuremberg through
Augsburg to Italy and near the locations at which the rivers Aurach and
Roth flow into the Rednitz, a settlement developed that formed the
origin of the present city of Roth. Nowadays the "Castle Route" leading
to many castles, strongholds and points of interest from Mannheim to
Prague, passes through the city and connects it to Nuremberg and
Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
There is much to discover on a tour through Roth. The city looks back
on a rich history, the traces of which are often still evident. The first
mention of Roth in a document dates back to the year 1060 on the
occasion of the consecration of a church by bishop Gundekar II of Eichstaett and in 1361 it was granted a
town charter.
Because of its favorable location and the available water power of the rivers, Roth was an interesting
industrial site from earliest times. The Leon industry can thereby look back on a particularly long tradition,
extending back into the 16th century. This term refers to the manufacture and processing of fine wires for use
in textiles and in other goods from scouring pads to lace, decorative bands, Christmas tree decorations and
cables for sophisticated technical applications. There are still several companies in this branch in the city
today. The Factory Museum in Rothgrund demonstrates the manufacture of Leonish products on operating
machines and provides an excellent survey of the entire scope of this old trade.
Another museum is to be found in Ratibor Palace, a landmark of the city that was built in 1538. Passing
through the idyllic inner courtyard one enters the rooms of the palace and reaches the splendid State Hall, the
distinguishing feature of the palace. The Ratibor Palace Museum sheds light on the history of the city and its
inhabitants.
The baroque Margrave Fountain from the year 1757 is located on the market square. Among the various
facades, the Riffelmacherhaus stands out as one of Franconia’s most beautiful timbered houses. Then,
passing the Old City Hall and the New City Hall one comes to the picturesque Kugelbuehlplatz with its
shops and bistros, that invite one to stroll slowly through them and linger a while.
Another highlight of the city is the Cultural Factory; it was converted from a former production workshop of
the Leon industry. Its diversified program extends from concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances
to artists’ festivals and much more. Events such as the Roth Blues Days regularly draw visitors from the entire
surrounding region to the city. The cabaret, located in the Bavaria Cinema Center, that has received many
prizes, additionally enriches the cultural landscape in Roth.
The supply of leisure activities in the Franconian Lake Country, to which Roth belongs, affords a great
degree of diversion. The spacious Freizeitbad (swimmíng pool) in the idyllic Rothgrund region and Lake
Rothsee are in invitation to swimmers. Recreational possibilities are also to be found in the Roth City
Garden on the premises of the former City Garden Show "Nature in Roth 2003". The extensive network
of paths identified for hiking and biking facilitates access to the wooded environment and leads to interesting
excursion destinations. For example, the Historic Iron Hammer Museum Eckersmuehlen is accessible
without a car. Blacksmithing demonstrations fill the old tools with new life.
