ONE FINE DAY - St. Mary`s Home
ONE FINE DAY St. Mary’s Home 2013 Annual Report M any of the children and young adults are just beginning to stir, but threeyear-old Sierra is awake and ready to welcome the day, with a lift from Gwen Dickens, a direct support professional. L aniya, three, digs into her breakfast with gusto, dining family style with other children in her “neighborhood,” one of four living areas at St. Mary’s. A registered dietitian oversees every child’s diet, with input from physicians. Our staff members prepare and deliver more than 80,000 meals and snacks every year, in addition to tube feedings. Plates, spoons and cups tailored to each child’s specific needs are sent out at meal times as well. 1 T eacher assistant Sonya Irvin likes to start every school day on a fun note. So she scrawls a different joke on a white board outside her classroom, one of eight at the Home. St. Mary’s makes sure that every child, like 10-year-old Hamda, no matter how medically fragile, attends school. Some children go to local public schools, while many families choose to have their children stay at St. Mary’s. 2 3 K atie, 15, takes a break from her school lessons to relax inside a sensory tent in the back of her classroom. She gently reaches out to depress a large red button to turn on strings of lights. Many of the children and young adults have visual and auditory impairments and benefit from the calm atmosphere inside the dark tent. D eftly wielding a soldering iron, Mamie McCloud attaches large, flat switches to toys. Children with disabilities can easily press the switches with a hand or cheek to make toys play music, light up or dance. McCloud is a technician in St. Mary’s occupational therapy support services department, which creates and maintains most equipment needs, such as wheelchairs and splints, for the children and young adults. 4 5 A fter getting her teeth checked by visiting students from Old Dominion University’s dental hygiene program, two-year-old Payten enjoys some time in the garden outside the classroom for St. Mary’s Infant and Toddler Program. The program uses detailed lesson plans to build motor, communication and social skills through play and activities. It also emphasizes getting the children out into the community and encourages play dates with other children who do not have disabilities. 6 7 K ishaun receives a checkup from St. Mary’s medical director, Dr. Joseph Toland, a board-certified pediatrician who oversees clinical care at the Home. A pediatrician comes to St. Mary’s at least once a week for acute and routine visits. St. Mary’s provides nursing care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. H annah, 17, checks out a new physical therapy swing in the newly landscaped Albero House courtyard. With her is Lynn Regna, a physical therapist assistant. The physical therapy department provides children and young adults with opportunities to reach their optimal functional ability. The PT staff is involved in many aspects of the children’s care throughout the day. A t The Albero House on St. Mary’s campus, Aly bakes cupcakes in the kitchen to share with other residents as she celebrates her 22nd birthday. The Albero House opened in 2013 to care for adults with disabilities, thanks to the support of donors who provided more than $3.2 million. 8 9 K ulquinda, 19, gets ready for a meeting of St. Mary’s Girl Scout Troop #5067. Members of the troop vote on projects to work on and use technology and adapted materials to complete their badge requirements. A drian, six, coos and hums as her fingers shape the clay into a flat disc using a pottery wheel with Shirley Justice, our community liaison. Kerneos, Inc. generously provided the funds for St. Mary’s to buy the pottery wheel for sensory activities. Kerneos also holds an annual holiday party, complete with a DJ, for the children and staff. 10 11 O ne-year-old Iker plays with bubbles as he and his mother spend some time together in a courtyard at St. Mary’s. Families and friends are encouraged to visit the children and young adults frequently, and kids go home often as well. A idan, 12, tries his hand at cornhole after a full day of classes. St. Mary’s recreational therapy department provides the children and young adults the opportunity to explore various recreation and leisure programs designed to improve social, cognitive, physical and emotional abilities, as well as improve overall quality of life. Programs are offered on weekday afternoons, weekends and days with no school. The department also organizes field trips and events such as prom. 12 13 T he children and young adults have had a long, eventful day. After dinner and a bath, it’s time for Sierra and other residents to settle in for a good night’s sleep. 14 15 Thank you for helping children and young adults be healthy and happy A home in the very best sense of the word W elcome to “One Fine Day.” We wanted to give you a snapshot of daily life for the children and young adults of St. Mary’s, at the Home and in the community. The photos you see here depict our efforts — with your crucial support — to ensure that every person here experiences life as healthy and happy as possible. As we look back on 2013, we continue to see progress at St. Mary’s Home. Thanks to your support, the Home continues to evolve while staying true to our mission to help each resident reach his or her fullest potential. The dedication of The Albero House in September marked the initiation of services for adults on our campus. By early 2015, The Albero House will be home to 12 adults who otherwise might have had difficulty finding a place to live after leaving St. Mary’s. A number of young adults already have moved into their individually decorated, private rooms, and they love their beautiful new home. Demand for services at St. Mary’s continues to stay strong. In 2013, St. Mary’s had 20 admissions — matching the record number we reported in 2012. Demand for shortterm care also remains strong. Going forward, we will look to diversify the type of services we provide in order to reach more people. That includes providing care for those who need ventilators to breathe easier. We believe the future of St. Mary’s Home is bright as we look to expand services on campus and seek opportunities to serve off-campus as well. We thank you for your support. You give great aid and comfort to our residents through your generosity. The Auxiliary Board of St. Mary’s adds greatly to our ability to achieve our mission, and our dedicated and experienced Board of Directors and Foundation Board set the tone for St. Mary’s continued success. Finally, in uncertain economic times, we must be certain that the future is assured for our children and young adults. As well as the day-to-day activities that this publication showcases, please note what some donors are doing to help ensure the future of this historic organization. Please consider joining with them in assuring families — who face concerns about their children every day of their lives — that their children’s future is secure. A gift in your will or naming St. Mary’s Home as a beneficiary could secure the care of one child. For all that you do, we remain grateful. O ur mission is to provide quality, specialized care within a homelike environment for children and adults with severe disabilities, so each person can achieve his or her fullest potential. pleased to serve military families while they are stationed in Virginia. It sometimes requires extraordinary patience, effort and skill. But in a place filled with love and laughter, where victories are often hard-fought but deeply rewarding, it’s worth it. And every inch of progress is unforgettable. How will you be remembered? We invite you to link your legacy with ours through a planned gift. After all, love is forever. If you make a planned gift to St. Mary’s by the end of 2014, you will receive special recognition as a founding member of The Guardian Society and an invitation to a special event at the home of one of our Board members. Of course, if you prefer to join The Guardian Society and remain anonymous, you will still be invited to events and receive updates from the Home, but your name will not appear in print or online. It can be as easy as asking your attorney to add a codicil, a simple addition, to your will. Please contact Martha Price Stewart at (757) 446-6797 or [email protected] to ask more about this and other ways you can continue your support into the future. F rom sponsoring St. Mary’s prom to organizing a fun summer luau for the children and young adults to holding an annual auction and gala, the Auxiliary Board of St. Mary’s supports the Home in many ways. G uardian Society founding members Catherine and Tom Giordano created The Giordano Trust to enhance the environment for future residents of St. Mary’s. The Giordanos have been blessed with healthy children and grandchildren, but they have friends and extended family members who are dealing with a variety of medical issues. “This trust designation is our way of acting to support their respective plight to find care facilities that can provide and nurture their loved ones,” Mrs. Giordano said. 18 • Clare Davison, president • Mollie Pavlik, vice president • Andi Lawson, recording secretary • Joanne Rentner, corresponding secretary • Joni Fontes, historian Associate Members Members Auxiliary Officers • Marie Siebeking, treasurer • Jean Hillegass, parliamentarian • Nancy King, Thanksgiving letter coordinator • Madelyn Sawyer, Thanksgiving letter coordinator • Carole Anne Albero • Carol Allain • Betty Bade • Amy Dagnall • Shannon Edsall • Angie Fowler • Laura Godfrey • Lynne Godfrey • Stephanie Hemingway • Karen Hibbard • Betty Jackson • Rachel Jiral • Lin Jolley • Sarah Kirkley • Pat Kramer • Julie Martinette • Debora Mosher • Katheryn Hutchison Mote • Jackie Napolitano • Shelia Napolitano 19 •L ucy Oldfield • Amy Pavlik •R ita Reeves • Mona Pavlik •M artha Taylor • Shannon Strauss • Barbara Stufflebeem • Lori Ann Tamayo • Camille Vaughan • Roxane Ward • Kathleen Weaver • Nancy Wilcox Thank you A look back at some of what you made possible in 2013 P J osh cut a red ribbon, with help from his mom and St. Mary’s Board member Carl M. Albero, to officially open The Albero House on St. Mary’s campus on Sept. 19. The dedication ceremony was underwritten in part by Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. Supporters like you contributed the more than $3.2 million needed to build and equip The Albero House, where adults with severe disabilities receive the same expert, compassionate care for which St. Mary’s is known. The Albero House is named after the main benefactors, Carl and Carole Anne Albero. Josh was the first resident to move in to the 10,000-square-foot home. All 12 private rooms are expected to be full by early 2015. “St. Mary’s is a godsend,” said Josh’s mom, Nancy Stockner. Josh is “happy and healthy, and he has a beautiful new home.” resident Clare Davison and the rest of the wonderful women who make up St. Mary’s Auxiliary threw a terrific auction and gala in April, raising $73,000, including $13,000 to help the children and young adults of St. Mary’s take trips to the beach and the zoo and enjoy other fun activities. Thank you to Joe Flanagan of WVEC-TV for emceeing the event, and to St. Mary’s many friends for coming out to The Westin-Town Center in Virginia Beach or otherwise showing your support. E W hen Josh moved into his room at The Albero House in July, Maersk employees Beth Frisher, Meredith Siviter and Kristen Barton were determined to make sure that the space was personalized to his liking. They worked together to decorate the room with an ocean theme, with input from Josh, his mother and Sheri Mantoni, his support coordinator at St. Mary’s. They had some help from Lisa Edwards-Soblotne, a friend of St. Mary’s, and Ron Herrick, St. Mary’s facility maintenance manager, as they installed a beach mural, surfboard wall art and other items. That act of generosity has inspired others; please see the donor listings section for all the sponsors of bedrooms in The Albero House. 20 sther and Tim McDermott of Ashland, Va., won our Auxiliary’s raffle of a 2013 Volkswagen Passat S, donated by Checkered Flag Volkswagen. Special thanks to Checkered Flag Volkswagen General Manager Todd Collins, who now has arranged for donation of a car four years in a row. P D uring Occupational Therapy Month in April, our occupational therapy support services staff organized a drive to collect shoes for Soles4Souls, Inc. Michelle Burnette, district epidemiologist with the Norfolk Department of Public Health, discussed influenza. Dr. Jason Gerber, developmental pediatrician at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, spoke about behavior management. Dr. Marybeth R. Dixon of WomanCare Centers, PLC, finished the series with a talk about Depo-Provera. See saintmaryshome.org for the current speaker lineup. J M organ went shopping for a dress for St. Mary’s prom. Her mom joined Morgan and members of St. Mary’s recreational therapy for a fun afternoon at Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach. The Auxiliary Board of St. Mary’s provided the funds for Morgan and other girls to buy dresses and for the boys to rent tuxedos. aime and other young adults at St. Mary’s looked all grown up in their formalwear as they got dressed up for that ritual of spring, prom. Jaime’s friend Colton was voted prom king, while Keshia earned the prom queen crown. All the girls looked quite glamorous thanks to volunteer Michelle Gabriele, who came in to do their makeup professionally. Many thanks to the students from Norfolk Academy who decorated our Atrium and danced the afternoon away with our kids. 21 K A ly and other children and young adults took part in the fourth annual science fair organized by the REACH (Raising Expectations and Abilities for Children with Complex Health Needs) program of Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs, which runs the school at St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s makes sure that every child, no matter how medically fragile, attends school. If a family prefers, their child can go out to classes at public schools in Norfolk or Virginia Beach. Many families choose to have their children stay at St. Mary’s. ulquinda and other members of St. Mary’s Girl Scout Troop #5067 worked on badges for photography by taking photos with a switch-adapted camera as well as an iPad. On May 7, they held an exhibit in our boardroom to share some of their work. F K eshia (at left) proudly walked to the podium to receive her certificate as she, Alysha, Ashley, Gregory, Keith, Shanita (at right), Terrance and Thomas celebrated their graduation day in May. “These children have taught me more than I could ever teach them,” said Terry A. Lyle, principal of the SECEP REACH program, which runs the school at St. Mary’s. or many children, camp is a summer tradition of making new friends and creating lifelong memories. With a $20,800 grant from the We Promise Foundation, 16 children and young adults from St. Mary’s had fun at camp, and made those memories, over the summer. We Promise Chairman John Blum (pictured with Payten) said employees and supporters of the charitable arm of Chartway Federal Credit Union are “honored to provide St. Mary’s residents with the chance to enjoy an enriching outdoor experience.” L B B&T employees volunteered at St. Mary’s in June, washing windows, cleaning chairs and assembling communication books for our kids to use in school. The employees are part of the BB&T Lighthouse Project, in which BB&T associates have completed more than 4,400 community service projects. They are among the many volunteers who donate their time and talent to support our children and young adults. aniya and Adrian kept cool on a hot summer day thanks to a donation from the Red Cross Water Safety Committee that turned one of the Home’s courtyards into a “Summer Fun Park” water zone complete with a splash pad, fountains, water dome and gigaball. M N early all of the almost 90 children and young adults who live at St. Mary’s Home spent a beautiful October Saturday together outdoors during St. Mary’s Fall Mile for Movement Festival, presented by Portfolio Recovery Associates. Residents, staff, volunteers and other festival-goers from the community decorated wooden pumpkins, took wheelchair-accessible hay rides through a “haunted” forest, participated in a onemile fundraiser walk around our campus and enjoyed music and other festivities. Thank you to everyone from throughout the community who came to St. Mary’s for the festival or otherwise supported the event, which netted more than $7,000 for the Home. egan and other children and young adults enjoyed crafts and games during a luau that the Auxiliary Board of St. Mary’s organized in our Atrium, with help from the recreational therapy staff. S t. Mary’s, in partnership with the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, developed a family handbook to help families and guardians learn more about the Home and the services we offer. The handbook, funded in part by Tidewater Children’s Foundation, is available in Spanish as well as English. Kid2Kid founders Jenna Crumley and Brooke Gasser were honored on National Philanthropy Day (Nov. 13) by the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. They were recognized in the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Category for inspiring dozens of kids, and their parents, to get involved in community service. Kid2Kid volunteers hold an annual “Chalk the Walk” event, joining children at St. Mary’s to decorate the entryway where children board the bus for school. Kid2Kid also has raised more than $12,000 for St. Mary’s by selling handmade crafts. Z C arrington has been strengthening her legs by using one of two standers funded by the Miller Oil Foundation with a $6,400 grant. The stander improves digestion and makes it easier for Carrington to breathe. ach and other children and young adults at St. Mary’s shot some hoops in our Atrium along with members of the men’s basketball team from The College of William and Mary. The athletes and Head Coach Tony Shaver helped kids toss basketballs into a large hoop and did some cheering, too. Thank you 22 23 Thank you A H amda (here with friend of St. Mary’s Kim Thumel) and some of the other kids participated with Team Hoyt VB in the Rock ‘n’ Roll HalfMarathon in Virginia Beach over Labor Day Weekend. A S anta Claus and the Easter Bunny took over operations of St. Mary’s for a day in December, to the delight of residents like Zach. CEO William C. Giermak agreed to dress up as Santa and CFO Wayne Jones donned a bunny suit as part of a staff fundraiser to help people affected by the typhoon in the Philippines. The fundraiser brought in $2,000, including a matching donation from Shoes for Crews. 24 lana picked out a pumpkin (and took a little nap on a hay bale) when she and other kids visited Hunt Club Farm’s pumpkin patch and petting zoo in Virginia Beach on a bright fall day. The field trip was one of hundreds of outings the children and young adults enjoy yearly. Our children and young adults keep busy outside of the school day through the efforts of our recreational therapy department and a community liaison who oversees the children’s expanding involvement in community life. The children visit museums and the beach, attend summer camp, ride horses and take part in many other activities. We also invite groups and individuals to St. Mary’s to interact with the children at the Home. A J orge joined Amanda Batcher for some duets on songs including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” when the singer and friend of St. Mary’s returned to the Home for a special holiday performance. S t. Mary’s garden is a fitting tribute to Ann Wagner Gill, a member of the Virginia Beach Garden Club and dedicated friend of St. Mary’s who collected gifts and delivered them during the holidays to the children and young adults. Her family and friends contributed $40,000 from 165 gifts in her memory when she passed away, and St. Mary’s used the funds to develop a garden that was dedicated in her honor in 2013. lack of ice didn’t stop the Norfolk Admirals from playing a game – a soccer game, that is – with kids at St. Mary’s during the holidays. Players also took a tour of The Albero House, with Jorge and Salim as their guides, and signed Admirals programs for the children and young adults. Different members of the team visited St. Mary’s in the spring. W T he mothers of children and young adults who live at St. Mary’s received some special pampering during the holiday season, with generous donations from Mary Kay Independent Sales Director Lindsay Pryor (at left), local Mary Kay beauty consultants and their loyal customers. Pryor and Independent Beauty Consultant Yasmeen Taswell (at right) delivered pampering packages to St. Mary’s to be distributed to the moms. The Mary Kay folks also treated one mom with an afternoon of well-deserved “me’’ time at Mary Kay’s Pink Studio. e have many supporters who donate their time, talent and treasure to the children and young adults of St. Mary’s Home. The holiday season sees many generous folks drop by with gifts for the kids, including employees of the Norfolk FBI office, who visited with Angus the therapy dog. Tyree and other children broke out into huge smiles when they petted Angus. 25 C S ome of the children and young adults decided to participate in a very special service project: the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, which matches donors with children from families unable to provide gifts to their children during the holidays. To raise funds to provide Angel Tree gifts, our kids held a homemade goods and treats sale. They made and decorated lots of fun stuff, from holiday ornaments to tote bags to pet treats to melted crayon art. And St. Mary’s staff contributed baked goods and items for a silent auction. All told, the children and young adults raised $1,200, including an anonymous $300 donation. ayden (pictured with his dad), Colton, Liam, Payten and Jenny visited Christmas Town at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, along with parents, siblings and St. Mary’s staff. The kids enjoyed seeing holiday lights and decorations, getting on rides like the Battering Ram and visiting Santa at the North Pole. Sister Mary June Morin, 1933-2014 S ister Mary June Morin of the Daughters of Wisdom was just 26 years old when she took a train from New York to Norfolk on Feb. 8, 1960, to begin working at what was then called St. Mary’s Infant Home. She retired exactly 51 years later, after a lifetime devoted to caring for and cherishing thousands of children. She continued to visit St. Mary’s regularly as a volunteer. She passed away peacefully at a hospital on Feb. 7, 2014, and a funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s on Feb. 15. To learn more about this remarkable woman, please read the story in the spring 2014 issue of our Journeys newsletter, or visit saintmaryshome.org/about-us/sister_mary_june.
