Let Us Give Thanks To God For all Things On Thursday, November
November 2015 Let Us Give Thanks To God For all Things On Thursday, November 26th, we will gather together, with God’s Blessing, to celebrate the time honoured tradition of the Thanksgiving Holiday. It is probably the preeminent day of the year where the family unit assembles to pause from the ongoing daily routine to give thanks to God in and for all things, as St. Paul exhorts us in his first Epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter 5, verses 16-21: “Rejoice always, pray unceasingly, and give thanks always to God in Christ Jesus…”. We truly, have much to be grateful for Christians, we celebrate Liturgy. How do we know this? In “Theia Eucharistia” or the celebration the Greek word efcharisto meaning say thanks to God by participating in voices to the Almighty. We also Liturgy in Greek as “Theia Leitourgia” people.” In this case, the spiritual and in our lives...As Greek Orthodox “thanksgiving” at every Divine Greek, The Divine Liturgy is called of the “Holy Eucharist.” Eucharist is “thank you.” Thus, at every Liturgy we the worship services and lifting our recognize the title of the Divine which means “the work of the liturgical work of the communicants. So then: Let’s be thankful to God for His blessings every day... Let us work to be always be kind and gracious… Let us be less selfish and more “self less…” Let us be less childish and more child-like… Let us be less greedy and more giving… Let us always count our blessings and appreciate God’s gifts, every day… Amen! Happy Thanksgiving to all! -Father Nicholas M. Kastanas 4 Appleton Street ■ Arlington, MA 02476 ■ church 781.646.0705 Fr. Nicholas Kriketos Synaxis of the Archangel Michael & the other Bodiless Powers: Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Salaphiel, Jegudiel, & Barachiel Sunday, November 8, 2015 Reading: All the Angels, according to the Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits, - sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation - (Heb. 1:14). God set them as overseers of every nation and people, and guides to that which is profitable (Deut. 32:8); and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, one is also appointed to protect each Christian individually. He commands them to guard them that hope on Him, that nothing should harm them, neither should any evil draw nigh to their dwelling (Ps. 90:10-12). In the Heavens they always behold the face of God, sending up to Him the thrice-holy hymn and interceding with Him in our behalf, seeing they rejoice over one sinner that repents (Esaias 6:2-3; Matt. 18:10; Luke 15:7). In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Orthodox Catholic Church, wisely honouring these divine ministers, our protectors and guardians, celebrates today the present Synaxis that is, our coming together in assembly for their common feast to chant their praises, especially for the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are mentioned in the Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God?" and Gabriel means "God is mighty." The number of Angels is not defined in the divine Scriptures, where Daniel says that thousands of thousands ministered before Him, and ten thousands of ten thousands attended upon Him -(Dan. 7:10). But all of them are divided into nine orders which are called Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. Apolytikion-Hymn of Synaxis of the Archangels in the Fourth Tone O Commanders of the Heavenly Host, we the unworthy beseech you, that through your entreaties you will fortify us, guarding us in the shelter of the wings of your ethereal glory, even as we fervently bow before you crying: "Deliver us from all danger, as Commanders of the Powers on high! Kontakion-Hymn of Synaxis of the Archangels in the Second Tone Chief Commanders of God; ministers of divine glory; guides for men and leadership of the Incorporeal; as Chief Commanders of the Incorporeal, plead for our welfare and for great mercy. 2 The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple Sunday, November 21, 2015 Reading: According to the tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was brought to the Temple at three years of age, where she was consecrated to God and spent her days until she was fourteen or fifteen years old; and then, as a mature maiden, by the common counsel of the priests (since her parents had reposed some three years before), she was betrothed to Joseph. Apolytikion-Hymn of The Entrance of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone Today is the prelude of God's pleasure and the proclamation of man's salvation. The Virgin is clearly made manifest in the temple of God and foretells Christ to all. Let us also cry out to her with mighty voice, "Hail, fulfillment of the Creator's dispensation." Kontakion Hymn of Entry of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle. Και έγινε κληρικό 6 7 8 News and Announcements Choir – Oath of Office On Sunday, October 4, 2015, the Choir celebrated Hymn-Singing/Church Music Sunday as part of the Archdiocesan wide celebration. Alongside apple picking comes the harvest of grapes, “Trygos”, which is a custom in the Greek culture this time of the year. During this unit of study, the children harvested grapes from hand-made pretend grapevines. In turn, they stepped on the grapes and collected the “must” (mousto). Finally, children learned about the different products derived from grapes and created a wonderful picture book that went home with each child. On Wednesday morning, October 28th, during Fire Prevention Week, firefighter Shellie Terrizzi, from the Arlington Fire Dept. visited our school and spoke to the students about safety. Lastly, our students joined the Saint Athanasius Greek Afternoon School to commemorate together, the anniversary of the OXI Day! Children sang patriotic songs and recited their poem for their family and friends. As always, this event was a huge success! (littlehalospreschool.org) Sunday Catechetical School Our academic year is well on its way. As I write these news, we already had 6 weeks of classes. The children have adjusted to their new classrooms and teachers and they all now understand the rules (ask them about Liturgy attendance cards) and schedule of our Catechetical Sunday School. The seeds are planted. What seeds you may ask? The ones from the Lord’s parable in Luke 8:5-15. Jesus starts the parable with a mental scene that would have been familiar to all that had gathered to listen to Him. "A sower went out to sow his seed” Jesus says. He goes on to describe all the possible ways that the sower’s seeds can be prevented from reaching their potential of becoming a bountiful crop. He finishes the parable by explaining how the seeds are like the word of God which can’t always take root in the hearts of people. Jesus concludes with the advice that for the seed to ‘bring forth fruit with patience’ we need to keep God’s word in a good and honest heart. As Sunday school teachers, and of course as parents, we all can relate to the challenges faced by the sower in the parable. We want our children to bring forth a bountiful harvest, but the field is a tough terrain for little seeds to take root and grow. How can we guarantee a successful crop? We must be proactive, vigilant, but most especially, faithful that God wants us to have a bountiful harvest. We know that we do not have the opportunity to plant the seeds for very long. Before we know it will be harvest time and if we did not plant and watered and weeded and supported our little 12 News and Announcements seeds to grow there will be nothing to harvest. Parenting has never been easy, and never will be, but if parents provide a good foundation for their children that is rooted in the Church, there is not much else that can be done to assure that their lives are on a proper path. With another year of Goya officially having started, we would like to thank all those who helped make last year so successful. We'd like to thank our outgoing officers Yiannis Bouboulis, Stavros Vallas, Yiorgos Karaminas, Annalise Paganis, Sophia Kyrou, and Demi Tsitsopoulos. We also want to thank all of last year's advisors for all their constant guidance and support! Our newly elected officers for the 2014-2015 year are: President: Demi Tsitsopoulos Vice President: Demetri Stefanidis Treasurer: Yiannis Bouboulis Secretaries of Correspondence: Mary Kandaras and Stavros Ioakimidis Secretary of Minutes: Marianna Delegas Our first GOYA event this year was Apple Picking at Honeypot Orchards! It was a great success with over 20 GOYAns! We picked many apples, ate cider doughnuts, caramel apples, drank Apple cider, and went through the huge maze! Thank you to all the GOYAns and chaperones for making the event so fun! We also had a wonderful Halloween party at the Bouboulis House. We watched movies, and had pizza and treats! Thank you to the Bouboulis family for hosting and everyone else who helped out with the event. Just a reminder that everyone from 7th to 12th grade is invited to join GOYA! Looking forward to more fun activities this year! Mary Kandaras 23 24 News and Announcements Fifties Plus On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, the Fifties Plus Ministry spent a beautiful day at the in Bristol, RI. The Blithewold, was formerly a home to the Van Wickle family, which is a 45-room English-style manor mansion filled with family heirlooms, framed by a series of lovely gardens, (one of the five best public gardens in New England), and arboretum on Narragansett Bay. After a guided tour of the estate and gardens, lunch was at Leo’s Restaurant. Escorting the group was Fr. Kastanas who we thank for taking the time out of his busy schedule to join us for the day. Many thanks to the organizing committee for their efforts in planning the day! A great time was had by all. The next meeting of fellowship is scheduled on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:30am.
