Distribution: Southern China.
The Chinese crocodile lizard is confined in its distribution to
Yaoshan and its adjacent mountain area (Jinxiu, Hexian, Zhaoping~
Pingnan and Guiping Counties) in Guangxi Autonomous Region (as
Kwangsi Province in former literatures).
It occurs in the
gullies bellow 760 m altitude; covering the area between 110
lll’~2l’E and 24
24~’5’N (McDowell & Bogert, 1954; Wang in lit.,
1989; You & Wei, 1987).

Population: Rare.
There is no accurate number available.
However, it was reported that the estimation of its population
size is approximately 2,500 and is considered of urgent need to
be included in Appendix II of CITES specially due to the
potential threat in international trade (Wang in lit., 1989).

Habitat: The Chinese crocodile lizard lives in close vicinity to
water, on the banks of rivers and rivulets; the lizard is able to
swim and dive perfectly.
It occurs in mountain area between 200
753 m above the sea level where it has been observed basking in
open vegetation overhanging water.

The species is reported to feed mainly on fish and tadpoles, but
also on insects, worms and small frogs (Wermuth, 1958; Wermuth,
1985; Wilke, 1985; You & Wei, 1987; Zhang, 1981; Zhang & Tang,
1985).
It is fond of resting on rocks or tree trunks with eyes closed,
when threatened, it dips swiftly into water.
It usually metes in
July or August, reproduces once a year in April or May the next
year with 2
8 babies for a time. Hibernation starts when
temperature drops below 15°C for a period of four or five months
(Zhang, 1981; Zhang & Tang, 1985).

National Utilization: Not known.
32.
Legal International Trade: There is an increasing demand for this
species especially for the pet—trade in Europe (Jelden pers.
corn.3 1988; ‘~.Jermuth in lit.3 1988; Wilke in lit.5 1989).
According to a letter from Mr. H. Liu from Hong Kong, the Chinese
crocodile lizard is often found in pet shops for sale in Hong
Kong,
Some of these are shipped to Europe and the U.S.A. (Liu in
lit., 1988).
Since 1985 a conspicuous and alarming rise in the trade in this
species has been observed, not only in the Federal Republic of
Germany, but also in Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands. Until a
few years ago Shinisaurus crocodilurus was only sporadically seen
in trade (Jelden pers. corn., 1988).
In 1985 the animal was still
rather expensive and sold for DM 995 each,
As the animal more
and more entered the trade a reduction of prices took place.
In
1988 the Chinese crocodile lizard was offered for DM 110
139
each in the Federal Republic of Germany (see Annex 1).

This may not be comprehensive as the import of the species from
China into Hong Kong and their subsequent re—export is not
subject to statutory control (Cheung in lit., 1988; Chan in lit.,
1989).

Illegal Trade: Between 1984 and 1986, 300 animals were sold from
Luoxiang, Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County and 3,000 animals from
Hexian Country, both in Guangxi Autonomous Region (Wang in lit.,
1989).

Potential Trade Threats: During the last three years, illegal
capture and trade of the species has increased largely, resulting
it into a threatened status (Wang in lit., 1989).
Only few is know about keeping this lizards.
As a result a lot
of animals die in captivity and the demand increases even more as
the crocodile lizard is easy to catch (Wilke, l985b; Wilke in
lit., 1989).

Protection Status
41.
National: The species has already been listed as the first
category of the List of the Protected Species of Wildlife of
China (Wang in lit., 1989).
42.
International: None.
43.
Additional Protection Needs: It should be considered to set up
natural reserves for the protection of the species together with
its habitat at proper sites.
The Wildlife Protection Law of
China, which came into force on March 1 1989 should be enforced
stricity.
In addition, there is an urgent need to include the
species into Appendix II of CITES to stop illegal international
trade (Wang in lit., 1989).

sehr0 Besonders gefreut habe ich mich über Ihre BemUhungen, die
KrokodiIschwanz.~f{dckerechse unter den Schutz des Washingtoner Ar—
tenschutz~Ubereinkommens zu steiien0
Für die Art hahe ich mich nur insofern interessiert, ais das
Typus—Exempiar sich in der Sammiung des Zooiogischen Museums Ber
lin befindet und ich höchst überrascht war, als ich beim Neu—Auf—
stellen der dortigen Sammiung nach dem Krieg auf diese absonder—
fiche Art stieB, die mir zuvor vdllig unbekannt war0 Darüber hat—
te ich eine kieine Notiz verdffentlicht, von der ich Ihnen hier
eine Kopie beilege9
Ursprhnglich woilte ich dann den Schädel des Typus—Exemplares
mit Hilfe von Roentgenstrahlen analysieren, urn herauszukriegen,
weicher Echsen—Familie der ~hinisaurus nahesteht0 Dann erfuhr ich
aher, daB die Kollegen in Amerika am gleichen Thema arbeiten und
auch vollsthndige Exemplare zum Sezieren zur VerfUgung hatten.
Darauf Bbersandte ich ihnen meine inzwischen angefertigten Roent—
genbilder, wie es der Ehrenkodex in der Wissenschaft gebietet.
Da ich jetzt meine gesamte BHcherei dern hiesigen Museum Hber—
lassen babe, vermag ich im Augenhlick nicht zu sagen, in weicher
der nachfolgend genannten beiden Publikation die ausführliche
Beschreibung und systematische Wertung von Shinisaurus crocodil—

In den Jahren 1930 bjs 1931 erschien dann die Arbeit eines chi—
nesischen Verfassers (sein Name ist mir jetzt nicht mehr eriflfler—

lich) iibor die Lebenswejse von Shinisaurus in cler Natur. Sie fin—
den wahrscheinlich die Literatur—Angahe in der betreffenden amer—
kanischen Bearbeitung oder mii1~,ten sonst im “Zoological Record)
unter den heiden genannten Jahrgängen nachsehen.
Lebende Shinisaurus tauchten in Deutschland dann erst vor kur—
zem auf; im Zoo von Da~mstadt konnte man die Tiere sogar nach—
ziichten. Dariiber ist em I3ericht von Dr. Wilke in der DATZ (Die
Aqu.— u, Terr.—Z., Stuttgart/Essen, 38 [5] : 233

schienen, und auf den zwei folgenden Seiten habe ich meinen Senf
dazugegehen. Auf Scite 236 (2. Absatz der linken Spalte, erste
Zeile) findet sich insofern em Fehier, als es nicht Prof. Shin

selbst war, der iiber die ~ehensweise der Echse herichtete, sondern
em anderer Herr, dessen Namen ich aber

mehr weiB.

Der Importe diesor Tiere wegen hatte sich Dr. Jelden mit den
chinesischen Behörden auseinandergesetzt und eine Menge sehr bemer—
]censwerter Angahen dazu erhalten. Er war zwar so freundlich, mir
Ko~jien dieser Unterlagen zuzusenden, doch glaube ich, Sie soilten
sich besser unmittelbar mit ihm in dieser Sache in Verbindung
setzen, U’. )1-~t”L;’x i~i.1en vom Bundesamt für Ernährung &c. ist
ihnen ja sicherlich bekannt.
Wie schon gesagt, wi~rde ich ejnen Artenschutz für Shinisaurus
sehr begrii(3en, denn angesichts der neueren Massenimporte scheinen
soiche MaBnahmen dringend angebracht. Wenn ich etwas dazu tun kann,
lassen Sie es mich bitte wissen.

Liebe Frau Klös,
es tut mir leid, daB ich Ihren Brief vom 03.11.1988 erst
jetzt beantworten kann. Dies hat unter anderem damit zu tun,
daB wiririunseren noch unsortierten Unterlagen nach einern
Sonderdruck gefahndet haben, in dessen Besitz ich mich
glaubte.
Möglicherweise gibt es diesen Sonderdruck in der Bibliothek
des Zoo Wuppertal oder der Universität. Es handelt sich urn
einen Bericht, vermutlich von Heini Hediger über Corucia
zebrata im Ursprungsland.
Möglicherweise ist der Autor aber auch René Honegger.
Letzterer kann Ihnen zumindest auch so, ggfs. telefonisch,
Auskünfte aus seinern umfassenden Wissen oder weitere Literatur—
hinweise geben.
Von Shinisaurus crocodilurus habe ich nur rnündliche Inforinationen,.
Sie sollen in einem sehr eng umgrenzten Gebiet Sücichinas in Gebirgs
regionen vorkommen. Dafür spricht auch ihre Vorliebe für relativ
niedrige Wassertemparaturen (17°
19° C). Die Tiere sind offen
sichtlich sehr leicht zu fangen und haben irn vergangenen Jahr den
Markt geradezu überschwemmt, Sehr wenig bekannt sind die Haltungs
bedingungen für diese Tiere. Daher ist die Todesrate in den Haltungen
nach meinen Informationen sehr hoch,

Aus all diesen genannten Gründen würde ich eine Aufnahrne in den
Anhang II des W/~ befürworten.
