14 Uhr ums nackte Überleben. Für
beide Mannschaften ist es die zweite, aber auch die letzte Chance auf
das Endspiel um die Teilnahme am
World Baseball Classic 2013.
Das deutsche Team startete mit einem fulminanten 16:1-Auftaktsieg
gegen Tschechien ins Turnier. Gegen
Top-Favorit Kanada erlitt die DBVAuswahl aber eine 7:16-Pleite. Nun
muss Schwarz-Rot-Gold gewinnen,
um den Traum von der Endrunde in
den USA aufrecht zu erhalten.
Der Optimismus in der Frady-Truppe
ist ungebrochen. Die Niederlage gegen den zweifachen WBC-Teilnehmer
hat daran nichts geändert. „Das Turnier ist noch nicht vorbei. Wir werden

gegen Großbritannien ein gutes Spiel
abliefern“, so der Bundestrainer.
Die deutsche Offensive ist nach wie vor
eine Macht und hat bewiesen, dass sie
sich vor niemandem verstecken muss.

Das Team von Manager Sam Dempster hielt die Endspiel-Chancen am
Samstagnachmittag durch einen

mit der DBV-Auswahl das zweite Alles-oder-Nichts-Spiel in Folge. Diese
Tatsache könnte für den EM-Elften
ein Vorteil sein.

B.J. Roper-Hubbert von den Bonn Capitals zeigten ihr ganzes Können. Roper-Hubbert war mit einem Homerun,

[ms] Eigentlich war Jordan Sprechman
diese Woche als Scorer für die Heimspiele der New York Yankees eingeteilt.
Doch dann bekam er von der MLB den
Auftrag, die Spiele des World Baseball Classic Qualifiers zu scoren. „Das
ist eine wundervolle Erfahrung“, sagt
der New Yorker. Normalerweise ist er
gemeinsam mit drei Kollegen für die
Heimspiele der Yankees und der Mets
zuständig. Auch wenn die Armin-WolfArena viel kleiner ist als die Stadien in
New York schwärmt der 50-Jährige in
höchsten Tönen vom Regensburger Stadion: „Das Feld hier sieht genauso aus
wie ein MLB-Ballpark.“ In der 13. Saison
arbeitet er für die MLB, über 400 Spiele
hat er bereits betreut. So war er es, der
im vergangenen Jahr den 3000. Hit von
Derek Jeter notierte. „Zum Glück war es
ein Homerun, da gab es keinen Zweifel.“
Ein weiterer historischer Moment in der
Scorer-Karriere Sprechmans war am
1. Juni diesen Jahres: Zum ersten Mal
in der MLB-Geschichte der New York
Mets warf Johan Santana einen No-Hitter. Aber eines fehlt Jordan Sprechman
noch in seiner persönlichen Statistik: ein
Spiel der World Series.

Jordan Sprechman was supposed to
score the Yankees’-games in New York.
But then he got the special assignment
from MLB to come to the World Baseball
Classic Qualifier to Regensburg. “This
is a wonderful experience”, says the
New Yorker. He and three other scorers take their turn in scoring the games
of the Yankees and the Mets whenever
they play at home. Even though the Regensburg stadium is much smaller than
the ones in the Big Apple, “the ballpark
looks just like a regular MLB-ballpark.”
He’s in his 13th season as an MLBscorer and he did almost 400 games
since he first started in 2000. He was
there last year, when Derek Jeter got his
3000th hit. “Fortunately it was a home
run, so there was no call to make.” Another historic moment in Sprechman’s
career happened this year on July 1st:

Greg Frady unterlag den favorisierten
Kanadiern mit 7:16. Die Schwarz-RotGoldenen hielten lange mit, zogen am
Ende aber klar den Kürzeren.
Die Partie begann denkbar schlecht für
die deutsche Mannschaft. Starter Alex
Burgos ließ die ersten beiden Schlagleute per Freilauf auf Base. Anschließend hämmerte Jimmy van Ostrand
den Ball über die Anzeigetafel und
brachte sein Team mit 3:0 in Front.
Die DBV-Auswahl hatte eine schnelle
Antwort parat. Nach einem Double von
Jake Shaffer und einem Walk für Matt
Weaver schickte Eric Suttle seine beiden Teamkollegen über die Homeplate.

einem Schlag ins Leftfield förmlich auf
das zweite Base und markierte kurz darauf das 4:4.
Danach blieb es zunächst ruhig. Erst
im siebten Durchgang läutete Tyson
Gillies mit einem Solo-Homerun eine
Fünf-Punkte-Rallye der Kanadier ein.
Angepeitscht von 4.085 Fans kam das
deutsche Team zwar abermals mit zwei
Runs zurück.
Am Ende reichte es aber nicht mehr.
Kanada legte unter anderem durch
einen Solo-Homerun von Jordan Lennerton und einen Grand Slam von Rene

Canada has reached the final at the
World Baseball Classic Qualifier in
Regensburg, Germany. They defeated
Germany 16-7 after scoring 12 runs in
the last three frames en route to the
win. 4,085 in attendance at the ArminWolf-Arena on Saturday evening saw a
tight ball game for the first six innings.
In the seventh a home run by Tyson Gillies broke a 4-4 tie and two five-run rallies turned the score into a blowout.
It was a back and forth affair in the beginning of the game. Jimmy van Ostrand handed Canada twice a lead with
a three-run home run in the first and
a solo home run in the third. Germany
was able to tie it twice, first with consecutive singles by Eric Suttle and Matt
Vance and then with an RBI groundout
by Jake Shaffer.
The score remained at 4-4 until the
seventh inning. Luke Sommer, who had
kept the Canadian offense in check in
relief from the fourth to the sixth, left
a pitch up in the zone and Tyson Gillies
said thank you with a tie-breaking solo
homerun to lead off the frame. 11 more
runs followed in the next three innings
and Canada ran away with a lopsided
victory. Jordan Lennerton and Rene
Tosoni (grand slam) hit pinch-hit home
runs to blow the score wide open.
In total both teams combined for 23 runs
on 33 hits and eight walks. Van Ostrand
was the best with four hits, two home
runs, three runs and five RBI. Simon
Guehring scored twice for Germany. Matt
Vance had three hits. Sheldon McDonald
ended up with the win, Luke Sommer
with the loss, both pitching in relief.

Samstagnachmittag gewannen sie mit
12:5 deutlich gegen Tschechien.
Für Letztere ist das Turnier damit bereits nach der zweiten Niederlage vorbei. Die Briten haben sich hingegen
noch mindestens ein zusätzliches Spiel
verdient. Jeweils drei Runs im ersten,
dritten und siebten Inning legten die
Grundlage für den britischen Triumph.
Vor allem BJ Roper-Hubbert (Bonn Capitals) zeigte sich in guter Verfassung.
Der Leftfielder kam in vier seiner fünf
Plate Appearances auf Base, schlug
einen Homerun, punktete dreimal und
schlug drei weitere Runs herein. Aeden
McQueary-Ennis verbuchte ebenfalls
drei RBI. Bei Tschechien zeichneten
sich Jakub Hajtmar, Mike Cervenak
und Jakub Malik mit zusammen acht
Hits aus. Jacob Esch bekam den Win.
Der britische Starting Pitcher erlaubte
in sechs äußerst effektiven Innings nur
fünf Hits und zwei Runs. 50 seiner 74
Pitches waren Strikes. Auf der Gegenseite konnte Jan Blazek nicht an seine
gute Leistung gegen Deutschland bei
der Baseball-EM in Holland anknüpfen
und kassierte die Niederlage.

one more game on Sunday.
The Czech team is eliminated from
the WBC Qualifier after suffering their
second loss. Three runs apiece in the
first, third and seventh inning laid the
groundwork for the win. Especially
Bonn Capital BJ Roper-Hubbert celebrated a successful afternoon. The
left fielder reached base in four of his
five plate appearances, hit a home run,
scored three times and drove in three.
