14 CASE STUDY: A WELL-MANAGED IMPROVEMENT
Aircraft IT Operations data is everywhere but, like any resource, it is
only as good as our ability to harness it and to apply it as knowledge to
improve the way we work.
Data is not difficult: almost anyone can accumulate a lot of it and most people do so, either as
part of their work or to support a hobby. There are even those who accumulate data for the sake
of it; but that doesn’t really add much value to anything. More relevant to us, airlines and aircraft
operators generate enormous amounts of data. Sometimes it’s as a function of the equipment
they operate; other data derives from marketing and ticketing; it can be related to what they
carry and the fuel they burn and yet more will be generated meeting obligations to lessors and,
not least, regulatory authorities. Yes, accumulating data is not difficult but using it requires thought, a purpose, a plan
and a means to manipulate and organize data into information blocks then present those in a coordinated manner,
which is when data becomes knowledge. Knowledge is very useful.
Data management has always been a part of aircraft operations IT but, with the arrival of ‘big data’ from myriad
sources and with the entry into service of new generation ‘smart… digital’ aircraft that can generate more data in one
flight than legacy aircraft generated in a month, to not manage data as effectively as possible is to miss a trick, to
give a free gift to the opposition.
Data figures large in this issue with an article on the smarter fleet and where an intelligent application of the
information in big data can reap enormous rewards on both sides of the balance sheet; better managed costs and
the means to leverage identifiable opportunities. You’ll also find the case of an airline that has been using electronic
techlogs since they first appeared and is now moving forward to the next level with that technology. And there is a
comparison of the merits of acquiring a wholly new system against the benefits of modernizing one already working.
In the Vendor Flight Log, David Carlisle puts us into the picture on what has made ETS Aviation the respected solution
provider that it is today. And, of course, no Aircraft IT Operations would be complete without a look into the World

LONGSTANDING Bluebox Avionics customer British
Airways and its French subsidiary OpenSkies have chosen
to upgrade their iPad passenger entertainment offer
on participating transatlantic flights. Both airlines opted
in early December 2013 to enhance the IFE experience
for passengers with a new purpose-designed Content
Carousel user interface for their secure iPad solution
Bluebox Ai.
Content Carousel delivers a more engaging and intuitive
navigation experience for users, and greater flexibility for
depth of content and filtering options. It also makes best
use of iOS gestures functionality, recognizing that business
travelers today are savvy tech users who expect smart and
elegant solutions from any device with which they interact.
BA deploys Bluebox iPads aboard A318 aircraft on its
Club World London City service, offering all-seat business
class flights between London and JFK. Similarly, OpenSkies,
the premium airline connecting Paris to New York,
provides each passenger with a Bluebox iPad for IFE.
“The new Content Carousel GUI provided an excellent
opportunity for us to enhance the look and feel of the
iPad deployment”, says Bluebox Project Manager Kevin
Birchmore. “The upgrade went in with ease and we’re
really pleased with how it looks.”

Widerøe chooses Aviobook EFB solution
IN September 2013, AvioVision announced that it had signed a long-term EFB agreement with Widerøe, the largest
regional airline in the Nordic countries. Widerøe’s Flyveselskap AS, trading as Widerøe, was founded in 1934 with air
shows, aviation schools, advertisement flights, cartography and other general aviation. Today, Widerøe flies over 2.8
million passengers yearly with 450 take-offs and landings each day. In 2012 the airline was awarded ‘Airline of the year
2012/2013’ by the European Regions Airline Associations (ERA).
“The introduction of an integrated class 2B EFB is a major step forward for Widerøe,” says Helge Anonsen, Widerøe’s
Deputy Director of Flight Operations and EFB administrator. “We expect it to provide reduced workload for our pilots
as well as both safety and financial benefits. Our demanding route structure and operational environment requires a
tailored and robust EFB solution. We are confident that our cooperation with AvioVision will provide us with this”

Boeing transmits protected Government
signal through military satellite
NEW anti-jamming technology was transmitted on
wideband and commercial satellite platforms in midDecember 2013 when Boeing applied the new technology
to an existing military satellite for the first time, expanding
the military’s potential to access secure communications
more affordably.
In the test, Boeing successfully sent a governmentdeveloped, protected signal through the sixth Wideband
Global SATCOM (WGS-6) satellite. Engineers confirmed that
the signal met all targets for accuracy and strength. The
demonstration follows a successful earlier transmission
of data over the ViaSat-1 commercial satellite in July,
showing that the technology offers an affordable option
for enhancing anti-jam communications using existing
commercial and U.S. government satellites and terminals.
“This technology boosts the ability of warfighters to send
protected information without enemy data interference
by using currently available satellites that do not have
anti-jamming technology of their own,” said Craig Cooning,
vice president and general manager of Boeing Space &
Intelligence Systems. “The two demonstrations show the
technology is flexible and able to be quickly deployed at a
much lower cost than building a new satellite.”
For both tests, the signal was sent using a commercial
modem that ViaSat modified with anti-jamming features.
Boeing plans to continue to develop and test the
technology for compatibility with other terminals and
systems in 2014.

BANGKOK Airways, Asia’s Boutique Airline, has selected Aviation FuelSaver™ to optimize their fuel efficiency program.
The early February announcement meant that the airline joins an increasing number of airlines, both main-line carriers
and regional airlines, investing in the capability to accurately measure their fuel efficiency.
Aviation FuelSaver™ enhances airlines’ fuel efficiency programs by accurately tracking initiatives, identifying savings and
communicating that information across the different stakeholders.
Roengrat Yutisart, Flight Operations Engineer and Fuel Manager, Bangkok Airways said: “ETS Aviation has already
provided us with great support for our fuel saving program both on the detailed review of our operation and the data
capture from our aircraft. Their team of experts has helped review use of Cost Index and made many recommendations
to improve our flight planning procedures. In addition we are capturing more accurate and reliable data from our aircraft
giving us detailed analysis of our operation.”
Bangkok Airways operates a fleet of aircraft on a domestic and international network to famous destinations such as
Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai and Maldives. Aviation FuelSaver™ will
enable the airline to identify and monitor fuel saving initiatives as part of their fuel saving program. The tool provides full
analysis of all the fuel saving initiatives plus aids the flight crew in operation via a dedicated pilot interface.

IFS (International Flight Support), and ACM AIR CHARTER,
specializing in long range business jet operations
worldwide, obtained, in mid-February 2014, final
operational approval of the PFB™ Paperless Flight Bag for
iPad from the German LBA/CAA.
“ACM AIR CHARTER signed a contract with IFS in early
2013 for a comprehensive PFB™ Paperless Flight Bag
software solution and has obtained final German LBA/
CAA approval in record time, yet the solution is still highly
customized to cope with ACM AIR CHARTER’s demanding
operational requirements. The PFB™ Paperless Flight Bag
is a cornerstone in our operational set-up with a flexibility
which ensures we can meet our long term EFB strategy

ACM AIR CHARTER has implemented the PFB™ Paperless
Flight Bag software in the iPad version initially as a Class

EFB unit in the field.

Transasia Airways selects Thales’s avionics
systems for A320 family fleet
THE early February 2014 Singapore Air Show, saw
TransAsia Airways confirming the selection of Thales’s
avionics package on its 18 new A320 Family aircraft.
TransAsia Airways’ new fleet will be delivered with Thales’s
ACSS T3CAS, a complete surveillance solution integrating
multiple functions into a single system. This agreement has
been made under the Selected Seller Furnished Equipment
(SSFE) alternate choice at Airbus, who have recently named
the T3CAS as the standard surveillance avionics suite on
the A320 Family. The system also provides the platform
for ADS-B functions, which will pave the way for future Air
Traffic Control applications.
TransAsia Airways also selected Thales’s TopFlight Flight
Management System (FMS). This system, developed with
GE Aviation, is the number one choice for Airbus single
aisle and long range jets with over 60% market share
and unique capabilities such as the landing system (FLS)
capability (2).

their customers. Microsoft’s work with Delta Air Lines is
an example of a commercial airline realizing the promise
of mobility for their employees and customers.
In mid-February 2014, Microsoft was at the Singapore
Airshow, talking with leaders across the commercial
airline industry about how they’ve removed the barriers
to adopting Electronic Flight Bags and going paperless
in the cockpit. Microsoft had gathered a lot of feedback
from Delta pilots confirmed that they love using their
Surface 2 tablets for several reasons: the full HD ClearType
display offers the lowest reflectivity and highest contrast–
even in the widely varying light conditions of an aircraft
cockpit; the 10-hour battery life keeps up with demanding
schedules, helping pilots to get things done while they’re
on the ground and in transit between flights; and with
productivity built-in, it’s easy for pilots to access two
apps at the same time, side by side so they can pull up
navigation information alongside weather data to help
identify safe and comfortable routes of flight.
Airlines are increasingly more nimble and competitive
due to technology investments. According to the 2013 Air
Transport Industry Insights IT Trends Survey, IT budgets are
expected to increase, and tablets will play a big role in this
IT investment. By 2016 the global level of EFB deployments
will extend to 87% of commercial airlines and 71% of
airlines will be deploying tablets to ground crews for
aircraft maintenance.

AIRLINES’ ELECTRONIC FLIGHT BAG
INITIATIVES
GIVEN the growing interest among airline operators to
adopt mobile technology as a means to simplify day-today business operations, the Surface team at Microsoft
has been working hard to make it easier for these airlines
to modernize. In mid-February 2014 they were happy to
share that Surface 2 tablets have achieved Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) authorization for Class 1 or 2 EFB
needs for all phases of flight. Through this authorization
process, the MS team completed rigorous environmental
and situational testing of the Surface 2 tablet, streamlining
the approval process when airline operators want to use
Surface 2 tablets as a Class 1 EFB during flight operations.
While airlines are still obligated to define their specific use
requirements with the FAA and request specific device
approval, the completion of these tests for Surface 2
satisfies a lengthy and important part of that authorization
process. So when airlines look to select Surface 2 for
their EFB initiatives, their timeline to deployment can be
significantly decreased. And because this authorization
includes all phases of flight, airlines can confidently
plan for using Surface 2 tablets as the fully equipped
and powerful PCs they are, rather than limit their use to
serving just as simple document readers.

NAVTECH PARTNERS WITH NEW PRINTING

IN mid-December 2013 Navtech Inc., announced their choice for a new
printing vendor. Slough-based PRINT.UK.COM is recognized as an innovator
in traditional and digital print technologies with a powerful problem solving
attitude. They have been contracted to print and deliver documentation
updates for Navtech Charts customers including maps, flight paths,
navigational charts, and aerodromes. Navtech supports many of its customers
with a paperless cockpit solution, but some are also required to have printed
charts documentation onboard as a back-up to their electronic solution. And,
some customers have not transitioned to the electronic solution. Therefore,
the quality and guaranteed delivery of PRINT.UK.COM’s services is vital for all
Navtech Charts customers.
This partnership will see PRINT.UK.COM significantly increasing its output,
producing volumes of over 50 million documents every year, all of which must
reach the flight decks within a strict time-frame. In order to fulfill the contract
with Navtech, PRINT UK has invested in new software to accommodate data
updates, installed new Xerox printing equipment, and has acquired additional
staff. PRINT UK has also reconfigured their warehouse to create a dedicated
area for Navtech’s output and fulfillment.

forward to working with Navtech to deliver this vital function for its customers,”

Plan (NFP) product. Commercial airlines from around the world have committed
to Navtech which confirms the operational return and reliability experienced by
customers and validates Navtech’s reputation for customer service.

Nolinor Aviation is a growing air charter company operating in Canada with a
focus on Arctic Operations. “We recently signed a multi-year NFP renewal contract
with Navtech which also employs aircraft performance tools, Navtech TODC and
Navtech AODB. Navtech Operations Departments’ customer service ability to
respond to our calls around the clock is just one reason why we’ve used Navtech

Sky Regional Airlines is also a new flight planning customer for Navtech. The
regional carrier, operating 100+ flights daily for Air Canada Express with the
addition of the EMB 175 to their fleet, will use NFP to produce flight plans
and optimize their fuel efficiency. European airline Ellinair is also experiencing
the benefits of the cost-effective solution NFP. The airline secured a multi-year

DECOMPRESSION AND EMI TESTS ON iPAD AIR
LATE January 2014 saw navAero announce additional offerings of valueadded services for deployment of tablet devices as Class 2 EFB platforms
with the successful completion of RTCA DO160-G testing for Electromagnetic
Interference and Rapid Decompression on Apple iPad Air tablets.
The RTCA DO160-G testing is a value-added offering to navAero customers
who request professional assistance in obtaining the required documentation
that will enable them to gain FAA/EASA authorization for inflight use of the tablet device.
Testing can be provided on either a single commercial sample
as a one-off test, or on a commercial sample plus a letter of
similarity and tracking/auditing capabilities based on serial and

KALITTA AIR MIGRATES TO NAVAERO IPAD WITH
AIRCRAFT INTERFACE DEVICE
SHORTLY later, in early February 2014 navAero was able to
confirm that long-standing customer, Kalitta Air, had chosen
to move to the navAero iPad Air-based EFB system as their
migration strategy to have the most current
technology in-place for their B747-200 and B747-400
fleets.
The highly adaptable navAero iPad “Smart” Mount
system with the built-in power/data interface module
will be deployed with the Universal Aircraft Interface
Device to supply certified connectivity to aircraft power
as well as ARINC 429 & 717 data. The integrated system
will provide for maximum functionality of the iPad Air
tablet as a deployed Class 2 EFB platform.
The iPad ‘Smart’ Mount system will be deployed
as a replacement for the currently installed navAero
t∙Bag™C22 EFB system. STC amendments will facilitate
easy modification of installed display mounting
components and wiring provisions to provide for rapid deinstallation of the current EFB system and installation of the iPad
Air and Universal Aircraft Interface Device.

China Eastern Airlines selects Thales’s entire Avionics Suite

• China Eastern will equip TopFlight FMS, the market leader in Flight Management

CHINA Eastern Airlines’ new Airbus single aisle fleet will fly with Thales’s newest avionics
solutions. The selection, unveiled in early January 2014, includes surveillance systems,
flight management systems and head up displays (1).
Following Airbus’ announcement to integrate Thales’s ACSS T3CAS® surveillance platform
as the preferred solution on all new single aisle aircraft, China Eastern is the first major
Chinese airline to select this new generation system (2).

IFS – International Flight Support, signed a contract with
Helvetic Airways for implementation of the PFB™ Paperless
Flight Bag from IFS.
The first phase of the implementation project started at
the end 2013 covering Helvetic’s Fokker 100 fleet. Helvetic
Airways will implement the PFB™ Paperless Flight Bag
software in the iPad version as a full Class II-b solution for
all-phases-of-flight use. The project includes the advanced

Electronic Techlog (ETL):
A well-managed improvement
Based on his experience, Stuart Deathridge, Engineering Projects Manager at Thomas Cook
Airlines shares some thoughts on a new electronic techlog (ETL) operational implementation
and benefits

HE ELECTRONIC TECH log (ETL) is a relatively recent
phenomenon in historic terms having really only emerged in 2004
when Data Systems and Solutions (DS&S) now Optimized Systems and
Solutions (OSyS) commenced development of an electronic techlog (ETL).
Of course, in IT development time, 2004 is like the Stone Age; but let’s stick
to historical time and move forward just one year to 2005 when MyTravel
Airways (now part of Thomas Cook Group plc. see below) commenced trial
of an ETL solution. This was certainly a success as in 2006 it resulted in the
first CAA approval of a paperless techlog. Following the 2008 merger of
Thomas Cook and MyTravel, which brought the two groups’ airlines
together under the Thomas Cook Airlines brand, it was this new entity that,
in 2010, rolled out the ETL solution across the entire fleet.
Today, with an ever growing need to maintain detailed and accessible
records of every stage, step and incident in an aircraft’s life, anything that
can contribute positively to that requirement will be of value and, in that
context, the ETL now stands alongside the EFB (electronic flight bag) as
part of the integrated systems architecture that is a modern commercial
aircraft. And the ETL architecture has to sit within that overall architecture.

everybody knows what their part will be and so that the implementation
is predictable and managed to create least disruption to the normal flow of
business.
But, get this right and a number of benefits will flow from the
new system. For the future you can expect a timely reception of aircraft
data, no more need to wait until logs have been completed and handed
over or uploaded. And a timely reception of data means that identified
tasks and repairs will be planned and executed more quickly to give less
costly aircraft on ground (AOG) delays. Not only will the data be timely
but it will also be more accurate which improves the quality of the
resulting records (very important all-round) but can also contribute to cost
savings with more reliable data supporting less need for ‘contingency’ overordering of parts and consumables. Again, putting that into context, the
data will be more usable for multiple uses such as a better understanding
of fuel usage for ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) purposes, invoice
reconciliation etc.

CONSIDERATIONS AND BENEFITS
However, as with any software implementation, there are a few things that
have to be considered when introducing an ETL application.
First of all is the architecture which will need not only to fit with the
wider system’s architecture but also will need to be able to accommodate
current hardware and software as well as any that might be introduced in
the foreseeable future. The hardware and operating system themselves also
need to be considered for their compatibility, scalability and ease of use by
the pilots and engineers who have to handle them – too many good ideas
have failed through the hardware and operating system making life more
difficult for users. It’s a similar story with process and procedures which
must add value for users and, again, work with all of the other internal and
external priorities and constraints that govern modern aircraft operations.
Continuing this user-led theme, a key component in any ETL
introduction will be the training of users as part of creating that end user
buy-in on which long term success will depend. It will also be important to
plan both the development program and the change control process so that
The next stage is to select the various components of the new system
starting with the hardware – the class of host device to be used. The first
choice will be to use the existing EFB architecture, if that exists, and that
can offer a lot of benefits, not least getting best use from hardware and
architecture that is already in place. But if the ETL is to be stand-alone,
then the choice will be much as with EFBs, i.e. between laptops and tablets.
Given the working expectations of the equipment, quite a few users opt for
ruggedized models of whatever they choose.
With the hardware, it will be necessary to select an operating system
although this will often be a part of the overall system chosen. And finally,
there has to be a telecoms service provider selected to link the ETL to the
external systems that will use the data it collects. Several considerations
will need to be taken into account. How well will the ETL be able to
communicate with the wider systems that use its data? Is in-country home
coverage and performance good and, given that aircraft tend to spend a lot
of time away from their home country, how good are the roaming partners
and availability away from home? Finally, how good is the backup and
support for telecoms should they go wrong?
PROCESS AND PROCEDURES
Whatever new system, architecture and components are chosen, the new
system will have to operate within the current business and might well
impact on processes and procedures. Sometimes, current processes and
procedures will need to be modified to accommodate the new system and
sometimes the new system will generate information and opportunities
not previously available and that, with a few changes to processes and
procedures, can add significant value to the operation.
Experience suggests that you should spend as much time on this as you
can. Most procedures only need wording change but there might need to
be new ones to cover the control and development of the system. While
the regulatory requirements don’t change, the methodology to support and
meet those requirements will change with the new methods of collecting,
collating and delivering data.
Also, any new installation on an aircraft will need regulatory approval,
certainly for the new system in any particular airline and usually separately
for each type of aircraft fitted. Good advice is to engage with your
regulator early. We found that even though the ETL was introduced as
direct replacement for the paper, mimicking all functionality of the old
system, formal applications had to be made to the local regulatory office for
software changes affecting functionality.
SOFTWARE UPGRADES AND ROLLOUT
Often the most stressful time in any implementation is the software ‘go-live’
and the roll-out of the new system across the fleet and business. This need
not be the case if a few simple steps are taken. Speaking from experience,
I’d say plan well ahead and remember that development, testing and
deployment are all likely to take longer than first expected. In particular,
and harking back to that user ‘buy-in’ that we mentioned earlier, make sure
that thorough user acceptance testing is conducted and that note of any
feedback is taken and acted on.
A good idea is to form a steering group to develop ideas, collate feedback
and ideas from the testing process, define and identify goals and targets,
and manage the transition by enforcing control and restraint, especially to
avoid specification creep. The group should also take note of any lesson
learnt. Rollout can take too long if you have a dispersed operation; a
steering group brings focus and directional stability to the whole process.
One other piece of advice: investigate and develop software that is capable
of being updated remotely. This will save a great deal of time and also help
to support consistency across the system if all updates are conducted with
one procedure.
PERCEIVED SHORTCOMINGS
There will be some issues with most installations and these can result from
either equipment or software malfunction (less likely but don’t discount
it) or lack of understanding on the part of users (more likely, especially if
training has not been up to scratch – see above). Sometimes you’ll be told
that ‘the ETL cannot establish a connection – it must be U/S!’ for which
there can be a number of reasons in the telecoms or even in the use of the
equipment by pilots and engineers. The important thing is to establish what
is really wrong, and ensure that the user understands the problem and how
he or she can prevent it recurring. With a complaint such as ‘The ETL
takes longer than the paper log to complete’, it is usually in the early days
that users still finding their way around the system can be frustrated but,
again, properly checking what is happening and then ensuring that the user
understands that will avoid anybody feeling that they are ‘on trial’ with the
new system.

BENEFITS
Once the new system is fully installed, up and running and in daily use, the benefits will soon
become obvious enough. We mentioned some before but it’s worth looking again at those and
others that will flow from the new system:
• The availability of near real time data;
• Data handling errors will be reduced;
• Less time will be spent on data transposition;
• It will be possible to reduce the administrative head count;
• More time can be spent on data analysis;
• There will be graphical warning for OOP (out of phase) and deferred defect thresholds;
• OOP’s control can reside with Maintrol;
• No more ‘lost’ or late tech log pages;
• Continued Maintrol visibility for remote operations.
2013/14 UPDATE
Since I gave this presentation in 2012 things have really moved along
for ETL at Thomas Cook. The biggest change is that OSyS have passed
the product on to Conduce Group to maintain and support. Conduce
replaced the backend server infrastructure resulting in substantial speed
and reliability improvements. We now have transmission success statistics
of around 98%. (Previously we were at 92%) Conduce also provided a new
website which gives us a Google map view of where the ETL’s are around
the world.

lease preparation, interior refurbishment, airline /
engineering CNS ATM evaluation, strategy and policy.

All in all, as with any system upgrade or, in this case, complete transformation, the changes
cannot be achieved without effort and they will certainly engage a significant number of people
in the critical phases of development and implementation. However, also as with any system
upgrade, the outcome will not only be the better operation of a critical system (in this case the
tech log, critical for maintenance, efficient operation and safety) but also the improvement of
the operation and the revelation of information and opportunities which, if properly leveraged,
can add real value to the efficiency and cost of the operation.
CONCLUSIONS
An ETL application presents a major shift in attitude towards the handling of log data which
means that you and your regulator will be embarking into new territory; so it pays to work
closely together from the very beginning. Time and effort invested in training and procedural
changes will pay off with a smoother uptake and less snags during implementation and rollout.
On a wider scale, the advent of EFB’s and the paperless flight deck will make future changes
and introductions easier for TCX (Thomas Cook Airlines) and any other operator and,
although it took a while to gain acceptance, we wouldn’t try taking it off our line engineers
now! In short, we’ve only just begun to realise the potential of the ETL.

HE AIRLINE INDUSTRY today faces a
number of challenges that demand innovation
in a range of operating areas. The market, if not hostile,
is certainly not an area for operating an airline in
anything but the most efficient and effective manner.
Reduced demand, high oil prices, climate change
initiatives, fierce competition and a heightened risk of
passenger compensation claims have combined to create
the conditions for a very challenging environment. At
the same time, the industry has to focus on
improvements for which ‘getting it right’ will more or
less be taken for granted, while failure can result in loss
of business and reputational damage.

airlines and operators with advanced IT services
for maintenance, engineering and flight operations.
These fleet service offerings will enhance operational
efficiencies, help airlines to manage their aircraft more
effectively and improve customer service by smarter use
of ‘big-data’.
Fuel efficiency has been identified very early as one of
the key areas where the optimized management of big
data can bring large benefits for airlines. This is why
‘Smarter Fleet for Fuel Efficiency’ is one of the very first
fields for application of this process from Airbus.
of the largest cost factors. Airlines today spend between
an estimated 30 percent and up to 50 percent of their
operational expenses on fuel. This was not always the
case.
If we look a bit further back into the past we see
that for a very long time the costs for fuel were not of
predominant importance for airlines. In fact, up until
ten years ago the price for a barrel of oil had never
exceeded $40. From the early 2000s onwards, the price
of oil started to rise inexorably and has now passed the
mark of $100 per barrel.
The common wisdom might well tell us that ‘no one
believes forecasts, but everyone wants to hear them’:
nevertheless, it is unlikely that the price of oil will ever
again come down to where it was ten years ago. On
the contrary, one can conclude that the age of cheap oil
is over and that the fuel cost pressure on airlines will
continue and possibly increase.
In light of the relentless and continuous increase in oil
price between 2005 and 2010, initiatives have already
been put in place to help airlines reduce their fuel burn.
The fundamentals of these initiatives have been the
optimization of existing processes and procedures.
For flight operations this includes notably the
optimization of flight profiles in order to fly the most
efficient routing at the most efficient speeds and
altitudes, and further operational procedures such
as reduced utilization of the Auxiliary Power Unit
(APU) or one-engine taxi procedures on the apron.
In aircraft maintenance the attention has been turned
to preserving, restoring and further optimizing the
aerodynamic characteristics of the structure, and
the consequent removal of needless weight from the
aircraft.
A further step has been taken with the exploitation
of historical data from several sources to improve
operations. A large number of suppliers on the market
today provide IT systems that allow, for example, a
detailed post-flight analysis to retroactively detect fuel
overconsumption or that help to determine the most
efficient cost index for a planned mission.
All of the mentioned initiatives and techniques
have already proven to be helpful. Airbus believes
that overall fuel consumption could be reduced by as
much as eight percent, if the full panel of measures is
efficiently utilized and fully synchronized.
(iv)The help to real-time decision making and reacting
to operational incidents.
By breaking down the general concept of the big
data management platform to the requirements of
an advanced fuel efficiency management system,
some key elements come into the picture. These are
indispensable for building a solid foundation as well as
for significantly increasing the potential for fuel savings.
AIRCRAFT RAW DATA
The very foundation of any efficient data management
system is undistorted and unbiased raw data and
an unlimited, unconstrained access to it. What is of
particular importance to an airline could be the use
of QAR/DAR (Quick Access Recorder/Data Access
Register) raw data, if possible without a pre-treatment
through a Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) system.

It is an ever-present fact of business life that costs
for airlines and aircraft operators continue to rise on
several fronts. However, it is very clear that fuel is one

In the light of ever increasing oil prices one should
not forget the high value money savings that can be
generated through even small savings in fuel burn. A
typical airline of some 50 aircraft, like the Average Airlines
depicted left, requires some 600,000 tons of fuel each year
and has to pay an annual fuel bill of almost $600million
under current market conditions.
So if the airline’s fuel consumption could be reduced by
only 2%, this would save an amount of some $11million.
That is equal to the amount that an airline has to pay to
lease a single-aisle aircraft for several years!
It is becoming evident across several sectors, not only
aviation, but also transportation in general or banking,
insurance and the public sector, that data is comparable
to a precious resource. And what is true for a natural
resource such as crude oil also applies to raw data: it
is not of great value if it is not refined and properly
treated!
Therefore, one needs the appropriate techniques to
unlock the full value and potential of real-time and
historical data, which has been extremely difficult up
until now.
The main challenges for an efficient, platform-based
‘big data’ management can be found in four different
areas, as depicted below:
(i) The efficient gathering of large amounts of data
from multiple sources;
(ii) The deployment of appropriate techniques to
extract the value from data;
(iii)The cross-domain collaboration of several
functional entities within the organization;
The term ‘big data’ is pervasive, and yet still the
notion engenders confusion. Big data has been used to
convey all sorts of concepts, including: huge quantities
of data, social media analytics, next generation data
management capabilities, real-time data, and much
more. Whatever the label, airlines are starting to
understand and explore how to process and analyse
a vast array of information in new ways. In doing so,
a small, but growing group of pioneers is achieving
breakthrough business outcomes.
The challenge arising from big data is not simply the
volume of data, as the name might suggest. Volume,
though, does play a major role, especially when
one considers that much of this is historic data that
cannot be accessed through classic queries because it
is simply too large. The challenges are multi-layered.
Having said that, fuel related data generated could be
large volume once FDM, ACMS (Aircraft Condition
Monitoring System) and FCPC (Flight Control Primary
Computer) are considered. Traditionally, airlines have
been storing FDM or ACMS data but seldom are they
used to their full potential especially in co-relationship
with each other. Also the velocity at which new data
is produced and needs to be processed can pose issues
for conventional techniques of data reception and

treatment. Half of in-flight data is generated by engines
in a six hour flight not to mention about the in-flight
and on-ground/maintenance data generated by new
generation aircraft. The airlines would need to adapt to
new techniques to manage and make the most of these
data. An advanced data management system, such as
one required for fuel efficiency management, needs data
from numerous sources and must be equipped to deal
with a large variety of data, which comes from sources
like the maintenance information system (MIS), flight
planning, crew scheduling, in-flight, historical or other
external sources such as weather, ATC (Air Traffic
Control) and seasonal variations, to cite but a few.
The data coming from these sources can range from
being highly structured, like application data,to highly
unstructured, such as textual data.
Additionally, the accuracy of data must be assured. It
is self-evident that a decision can only be as good as
the information on which it is based. The source and
information need to be trustworthy so that operations
can confidently make data driven decisions that rely on
more than judgement alone. Leading airlines need to
use ‘smarter’ technologies to harness big data to define
fuel management strategy along with other departments
such as maintenance, commercial, customer loyalty, in
an effort to make more holistic and cost-‘wise’ decisions.
This would lead to further opportunities that may, as yet,
be difficult to comprehend or anticipate today.
ASSISTANCE WITH REAL
TIME DECISION MAKING
As previously mentioned on the current potential for
fuel savings, several products for the post factor analysis
based on sophisticated analysis of historical data exist.
Gaining a sound understanding of what has happened
in the past is essential for future analysis.
A large and yet untapped potential to increase fuel
saving performance lies in real-time optimization. In
practical terms this means the immediate detection
of operational events and incidents, identifying a
smaller or larger panel of potential solutions and then
implementing one of them based on certain decision
criteria and the subsequent communication within the
organization.
HOW TO MAKE THE STEP CHANGE
As ever increasing oil prices have become the norm,
a variety of measures and techniques has been
successfully implemented. A game changer is required
to further improve the fuel saving potential and cost
for the airlines. This can be realized through the
combination of a direct access to aircraft data and
forward-looking IT technologies with efficient ‘big data’
management and real time optimization. n

Predictions for 2014 –
Identity as a Mega Trend
Just as the leftover Christmas fare was starting to look (and smell) decidedly dodgy in
my fridge, the concept of casting out the old and bringing in the new inspired me to
consider some technology predictions for the new year. One topic that really stands out
for me as a mega trend that is going to affect us all is ‘Identity’. Paul Saunders

N DECEMBER, WE witnessed “one of [the] most
sophisticated data thefts ever” when thieves stole
the identities of 70 million customers of U.S. retail giant
Target. In January, Target indicated that its critical
Christmas sales had been negatively impacted by the
breach. IdentityBreach.com lists 3,525 identity breach
news items over the past five years with the Heartland
Payment Systems’ 130 million credit card thefts topping
the list. The 2013 ‘Identity Thief’ crime comedy film
starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy aside,
the risks and impacts to individuals, corporations and
governments (Ed Snowden and the NSA) is no laughing
matter.
At home, our tastes, our purchases, our opinions, the
places we go, the people we meet, our sights and sounds
are all documented online to some extent. I’m assuming
dear reader that if you’re reading this then that statement
applies to you as much as to anybody. It isn’t beyond the
wit of man to expose the digital footprints of the people
around us. With social media and consumer technology
creeping into the work place and even the cockpit, the lines
are blurring between what elements of your personal
data belongs at home and which belongs at work.
How many readers have separate Apple or Google
accounts for work and for home devices? How many of
you bring your own devices (BYOD) to work? How many
readers use the same Skype or Windows Live account at
work and at home? How many make online purchases
or stream their favourite media on work devices? If
you add into the mix the complex web of information
management integration, social CRM and collaboration
tools, then you are starting to get a picture of the scale
of your digital footprint and how difficult it becomes to
separate business from pleasure. Gone are the days of
your employer simply tracking basic personal details to
control your access to network resources and to ensure
you get paid on time. Progressive employers are seeking
the same personal access as advertisers in order to best
serve your digital requirements. This might be to drive
rostering, deliver smart context to your information
requests, and to track your activities without you having
to duplicate that data into forms and databases (think
expense claims, time sheets, etc.).
The identity mega trend I highlighted involves two strands. One is to allow
the simple capture and utilisation of that user identity data by an interested
employer. The regulators are already taking a keen interest in this topic with
some on-board connectivity technologies being held back through fear of the
security implications… a couple of examples being the segregation of networks
on board aircraft and allowing crew devices to talk to each other. The other is
associated with an individual’s control over their online data and the ability of
businesses to protect their customers’ data from those with malicious intent.
Like Target, businesses that cannot protect customer data will lose sales and see
customers migrate to competitors. With the realisation that it is likely that some
systems are not as secure as people think, I believe that in 2014 identity data
will be treated as carefully as – or even more carefully than – money. Or, at least,
that’s how I see it. n

AIRCRAFTIT: How did ETS Aviation get
started?
DC: Two things triggered the start of the
company five years ago. First, I had seen in the
aviation companies I had worked for just what
transformational impact smart software can have on
their operations. Second, I believed it could be done
at a lower cost than seemed to be the
norm in the
industry. So I was on a mission to provide a highvalue, low-cost ‘software plus consultancy’ model
for the aviation business. I wanted to be the first to
really make it happen.
With the arrival of carbon
accounting in Europe, I saw the perfect opportunity
to put my ideas into action, and create a tool that
would manage the entire carbon data collection,
analysis and reporting function so that operators
could meet their new obligations at the click of a
mouse. And that’s where Aviation FootprinterTM
came from. We followed this with Fuel Saving
software and support services, via our Aviation
FuelSaverTM program. The rest is history with over
130 customers worldwide.
AIRCRAFTIT: What is the guiding business
principle that drives ETS Aviation?
DC: To develop smart products that lead the way,
and to deliver a service that exceeds our customers’
expectations.
I believe, is to have reinvented the value principle.
Our products are smart, high performance tools that
provide extraordinary value for money. Similarly,
our consultancy services offer amazing expertise, all
available at a very low cost.
AIRCRAFTIT: What is the attraction of aircraft
operations related Software and Hardware?
DC: I wanted to create software solutions for the
operations team that had the same effect as the
autopilot in a cockpit environment. The autopilot
helps the pilot keep a high level of situational
awareness by managing a very labor-intensive task.
Our software does the same. It enables management
teams to focus on improving efficiency, safety and
cost rather than spending endless hours processing
and analyzing streams of data. If you look at our
interfaces, they are a little bit like autopilots.
AIRCRAFTIT: What have been ETS Aviation’s
disappointments and what have you learned
from them?
DC: I am always disappointed at how slow airlines
are to react to a cost-saving opportunity. We
sponsored a survey that identified that fuel-saving
was second only to safety in terms of priority.
But the majority of the airlines are still using DIY
systems to track their fuel efficiency. It was hardly
surprising that so many were disappointed with the
results. What I have learned is to be persistent. We
are getting the message out there via conferences,
educational webinars and exhibitions. We keep
improving what we offer, and fuel costs keep rising,
so the business case gets stronger year by year.
AIRCRAFTIT: What has been ETS Aviation’s
greatest business achievement to date, and why?
DC: I’m very proud of two of our achievements.
In less than two years, our software Aviation
FuelSaverTM has become the market-leader in fuel
efficiency and was recently selected by some of
Europe’s largest air carriers and, equally as important,
some of the smaller airlines. Our other achievement,
AIRCRAFTIT: In a sentence, how would you
summarize what ETS Aviation does for aircraft
Operations customers?
DC: Simplifies the analysis of complex operational
data, and improves operational efficiency.
AIRCRAFTIT: What is new on ETS Aviation’s
development horizon?
DC: We’ve just launched a new FuelSaverTM Pilot
Interface with one of our UK customers. It’s a very cool
addition to the system because for the first time, pilots
are actively involved and can see their contribution to
the fuel efficiency program. The handheld application
appeals to their competitive nature, as well as being
helpful in planning fuel uplifts and identifying
immediate fuel efficiency opportunities. Next we are
launching a completely new stand-alone product
which can also be linked to Aviation FuelSaverTM
or FootprinterTM that will generate really significant
additional savings and cost efficiencies. It’s the result
of a great deal of development work with one airline,
but it has the potential to solve costly problems for all
kinds of airlines, large and small.
AIRCRAFTIT: What do you want your customers
to say about ETS Aviation?
DC: Agile, professional and focused on solving my
problems. I love their user-friendly software and
customer service. ETS Aviation provides sophisticated
software supported by expert consultancy at low cost.

ODAY’S ORGANIZATIONS ARE, to an
increasing extent, confronted with the
challenge to keep their information technology up to
date. The pace of business is rapidly increasing while
congruently, it seems that IT systems that were
state-of-the-art on one day are already out of date by
the next morning.
The ever increasing speed of new technology
developments thus leaves business leaders and
IT specialists facing the question of whether to
modernize legacy systems or to develop and introduce
completely new systems. Weighing off the costs and
benefits of both options can be rather challenging. In
this paper you’ll discover the advantages and risks of
both approaches and learn how several companies
were able to considerably reduce costs and improve
performance by overhauling their legacy applications.

‘Never touch a running system’; it’s a statement
that is well-established within IT departments. Yet,
legacy systems entail considerable maintenance costs
while lacking agility and adaptability. But today’s
companies are often stretched to make the difficult
comparison and assessment of the trade-offs of either
recycling legacy systems to pave the way for state-ofthe-art software or, in contrast, modernizing current
applications.
If done right, companies can realize substantial cost
savings by following the example of the City of Fort
Worth in the State of Texas, USA. By modernizing
its legacy applications, the city is saving $850,000
of ongoing costs for these applications each year.
The Irish Life Group, Ireland‘s leading life and
pensions company, may serve as another great
example: it found that an 80% reduction in operating
expenses could be achieved through an application
modernization program. Productivity gains and
improved agility of its systems for future innovations
were an additional benefit.
The key question, of course, does not come out
of the blue: the ever increasing speed of change in
today’s business environment calls for adaptive, lean,
and yet efficient IT applications that are customized
to the functionality required for the respective
industry. However, the reality in many companies
provides for a very different picture. The portfolio of
applications used today is in many cases outdated and
lacks flexibility which, in turn, results in a hindering
of operational efficiency. But today more than ever,
companies need a strong basis for differentiation,
responsiveness, and agility to win customers.
This naturally includes an up-to-date portfolio of
applications that enables them to create even more
value with what they have. Otherwise, there are many
competitors gladly willing to overtake you and put
them out of the picture.

LEGACY APPLICATIONS
ARE SO YESTERDAY
Yet, these legacy applications have been supporting
a multitude of companies’ processes for years now,
while providing insights and important information
for employees. But the fact remains; they can hinder a
company from exploiting its full potential due to their
high complexity and integration. Another implied risk
with legacy applications is that they are bound to hide
processes or functions that are overlapping one another.
The term ‘lean’ certainly describes something else. Of
course, one of the downsides you also need to keep
in mind is that a large legacy portfolio is constantly
demanding of extensive and thus costly maintenance
efforts, amplifying its inefficiency. And we hardly need
to mention that all of this may well be happening at the
expense of innovation.
Legacy systems get old, too. In the case of information
technology, it is the changing environment that makes
applications and software become a legacy. Interfaces
to neighboring applications and databases are out-ofdate and user interfaces do not correspond to today’s
standards with regard to graphics and guidance. In
addition, maintenance costs are further increased because
extensive software testing is necessary even when only
small extensions or functionalities are to be added.
GET THE MOST OUT OF EXISTING
APPLICATION PORTFOLIOS AND
PREPARE FOR FUTURE CHALLENGES
The challenging task now is to find the right strategy
aiming at upgrading your existing application portfolio
to meet future demands. When done in the right
manner, costs can be reduced while simultaneously
improving performance, reliability, and efficiency.
But why should one focus on the modernization of
legacy applications instead of buying new software which
is currently state-of-the-art?
Fair enough. The aviation industry has always kept pace
with if not pioneered technological developments. Hence,
while legacy applications may not be state-of-the-art
anymore, in many cases they comprise an inconceivable
number of customized and perfectly tailored functions
which have been developed over years. Replacing these
applications with completely new systems may often be
a trade-off between increasing usability and decreasing
functionality.
In light of the above, we have created an approach
in which replacing legacy, but well-proven and highly
customized systems, is not the only option for achieving
state-of-the-art performance. In fact, with regards to
finance and processes, the modernization of applications
is often found to be more efficient. Nevertheless, we
believe that it is of crucial importance to choose a
holistic approach considering the three core topics of
each application modernization: usability, data integration
and storage, and new functionality.
•USABILITY. Legacy systems often lack a state-ofthe-art user interface, resulting in complex and timeconsuming processes. Replacing these by choosing
the latest graphic frameworks, leads to enormous
improvements and savings.
• DATA INTEGRATION AND STORAGE. Since
the availability of data has rapidly increased during
the last few years, the integration and storage of
information is an inevitable part of every application
modernization. Thus, it is possible to further enhance
and accelerate processes by providing the right
information at the right time.
• NEW FUNCTIONALITY. Due to modern
technologies, the opportunity to develop and
implement new functionality is available. In addition,
new architectural concepts allow a simplified
approach for integrating improvements.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
But how does an application modernization work?
Initially, the present legacy system and its applications
need to be analyzed and assessed for functionality,
efficiency, and adaptability. This evaluation serves
as a basis for specifying the desired functions of
the to-be-modernized application. Furthermore,
additional interfaces with other (future) systems
need to be allowed for. The next step is the actual
design and modernization of the existing application,
which is implemented by using a multitude of
different techniques. Test automation, code cleaning,
re-engineering, migration, and extraction of legacy
functions to new systems are only some of these
techniques. Ultimately, the modernized application is
released and can continue its operation.
CREATING TRUE VALUE
To once more illustrate the possible benefits of a legacy
system modernization: one of our recent projects
included the modernization of an Operations Control
System for a major European carrier. As a result, the
carrier was confronted with considerably less expenses
because the modernization incurred only 25% of the
costs compared to the development of an entirely
new system. Furthermore, a new development would
only have included standard functions, missing all the
priceless customized functions that have been added
over the years.
REGAIN COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
So, you see, it might well be worth dusting off those
legacy application portfolios; analyzing and assessing
current portfolios in order to determine the best possible
solution for current challenges, taking into account
costs, efficiency, and adaptability. The outcome could be
modern day speeds and efficiencies with all the functions
that your particular business uses and a significant saving
in costs. n

The concept consists of two ruggedized 10.1” Panasonic tablets installed in the cockpit combined with

unit enables and controls the data communication between the EFB system and the airline’s ground
infrastructure.
