Den Mittelpunkt der auf drei Hügelrücken angelegten Stadt, einem

La Piazza del Campo, the picturesque
shell-shaped piazza is the central
attraction of this town built on three
hills. Siena is a gem of middle Italian
Gothic style. Twice a year Piazza del
Campo forms the setting for
the exciting Palio, a horse race with
the 17 different districts of the town,
called contrade, competing against
each other. This race does not always
just result in feelings of pride of the
inhabitants of the respective district,
but broken bones as well.
