The first lynx was set free from an enclosure in a remote part of the national park. It was the first offical attempt to reintroduce the lynx in Germany. Monitoring Monitoring the lynx population based on the following methods: • Coincidental sightings Coincidental sightings, animals found dead, tracks in the snow or other signs give evidence of the lynx. Most of the sightings are observed by foresters and hunters. The hunting associations delegate commissioners • Camera- and video traps A systematical monitoring with automatic photo cameras were approved in 2012. All together there are 61 photo traps and two infrared video traps. • Tracking in winter If snow conditions are appropriate, park rangers search for tracks in the snow and follow tracks over several kilometers. • Ecological genetics Lynx material like hairs, excrements or blood samples will be sent to the Senckenberg Institute, Gelnhausen for analysis. Monitoring How to value coincidental sightings of lynx? SCALP*-Kriterien (nach Kaczensky et al., 2009, leicht modifiziert) K1 Animals found dead, photographs, captured animals, genetic attestation. K2 Carcasses, tracks found by experienced persons or based on photographs. K3 Trusted information about sightings and uninvestigated information about tracks, Carcasses, excrements. K4 Doubtful reports of sightings and uninvestigated tracks, carcasses, excrements. *Status and Conservation of the Alpine Lynx Population Lynx reports 2011 - 2013 Lynx reports in 2013-2014 (preliminary) Monitoring maps of the lynx population in the Harz 2011-2012 2012-2013 Distribution of the lynx in Germany 2010-2011 2011-2012 2012-2013 Lynx telemetry in the Harz 2010-2011 2011-2012 F2 Lynx telemetry in the Harz ♂ ♀ Luchs ID Status Luchs ID Status M1 adult, territorial F1 subadult M2 subadult F2 adult, territorial M3 adult, territorial F3 subadult M4 adult, territorial F4 subadult M5 adult, territorial F5 subadult M6 subadult F6 adult M7 adult, territorial Attacks on domestic or grazing animals Refunds and compensation payments • Lower Saxony refunded the market value of domestic animals killed by lynx • Private hunters receive a 50 € reimbursement for a wild animal found dead when a lynx attack is confirmed • Compensation payments for grazing animals are also possible • Since the year 2000 the total bill amounts to EURO 21.500,00 • All payments require a confirmation by national park employees Public relations and transparency Public relations and transparency The lynx enclosure at the „Rabenklippe“ 14.00 Uhr Besuch der Luchs-Info im Haus der Natur, Bad Harzburg Luchsvortrag durch fachkundige Ranger und Förster Fahrt mit dem Erdgasbus zum Luchsgehege Exklusive Luchsfütterung am Gehege Einkehr in die Waldgaststätte Rabenklippe, dort „Futtern wie ein Luchs“ – Wildbret vom Harzer Reh, auf Wunsch auch Vegetarisches oder Kinderteller, Getränke extra Jeder Teilnehmer erhält zur Erinnerung eine „Luchstüte“ 18.00 Uhr Rückfahrt mit dem Erdgasbus Anmeldung bei der TOURIST-INFORMATION BAD HARZBURG Nordhäuser Str. 4 Telefon 05322/75 335 Termine 2010 23.
