The procedure of reintroduction
The project started in the year 200o. The first lynx was set free
from an enclosure in a remote part of the national park. It was
the first offical attempt to reintroduce the lynx in Germany.
Monitoring
Monitoring the lynx population based on the following
methods:
• Coincidental sightings
Coincidental sightings, animals found dead, tracks in the snow or other signs give evidence of
the lynx. Most of the sightings are observed by foresters and hunters. The hunting associations
delegate commissioners
• Camera- and video traps
A systematical monitoring with automatic photo cameras were approved in 2012. All together
there are 61 photo traps and two infrared video traps.
• Tracking in winter
If snow conditions are appropriate, park rangers search for tracks in the snow and follow
tracks over several kilometers.
• Ecological genetics
Lynx material like hairs, excrements or blood samples will be sent to the
Senckenberg Institute, Gelnhausen for analysis. Monitoring
How to value coincidental sightings of lynx?
