INTRODUCTION Examination specifications in foreign languages from 2003 onwards will show an increased emphasis on understanding and use of grammar. This collection of worksheets aims to provide pupils with exercises which will help them with § reading and comprehension § understanding the grammatical structure of German sentences § selection of the correct word in order to ensure both logical and grammatical sense. Each worksheet is printed in three separate formats: A. These worksheets are intended for pupils who are aiming at Grades D, E and F. Pupils are guided in their choice of words. For each gap in the text three possible words are offered. Pupils should select the word they consider to be most appropriate and underline that word in the selection. B. These worksheets are intended for pupils who are aiming at Grades C and D. Here pupils receive less guidance. For each gap in the text they should select the most appropriate word from the box below the text and write its letter into the box in the text. C. These worksheets are intended for pupils who are aiming at Grades A*, A and B. Here no guidance is offered. Pupils should fill the gaps with any word which is both appropriate and grammatically correct. For mixed ability classes, teachers should print off as many copies of each type of worksheet as they require. Where possible, several copies of the worksheet have been printed on the page. These can then be cut to produce the number of copies required. This will enable teachers to economise on photocopying costs. The answers for sheets A and B are always the same, i.e. for each gap the word to be chosen from the box on sheet B is the same as that offered in the relevant selection on sheet A. Obviously it will be possible for pupils completing sheet C to offer answers other than those given in the answer key. Teachers should accept these as long as they (1) make sense in the context and (2) are grammatically correct within the sentence. Teachers should suggest to pupils that they should always read the entire passage through first before beginning to write in their answers. Omitted words often relate to information at other points in the text. A clear understanding of the whole text will enable pupils to make a correct response.
