Monster Story ~ Part VI
It was early September and the late Summer sun
shone on the dying cornfields and the earliest signs of
Autumn peeked through the gums and sapling maples in
the valleys leading up to the Ridge Mountains. Things had
returned to “normal” in Grazersville and its’ environs.
It had been nearly a month since the hunting party
had returned with a mountain lion and a great black bear in
tow. The hunters had returned with their beasts in a matter
of 10 hours from setting out from the Town Hall, and their
stories of the hunts had grown to epic proportions. The
people breathed a collective sigh of relief at the death of the
beasts. Apparently, they surmised, the dry summer season
had prompted these animals to favor other sources of food
– though there was no sign of human remains from the
shepherds among the bones and “leftovers” of their
respective dens. Still, there had been no other creature
found – no dragon, no aliens from another planet, no great
hawk or owl; and no other of the town’s shepherds had
gone missing since the night Bill Myers ran to the
Quagmire.
Michael Grahame, the Mayor of Grazersville,
thought about the peace that had come over the Valley
area since the success of the hunt. He turned onto the side
of the road to slow down before parking in front of the
Quagmire. The place almost looked “life-like” in the bright
light of day, he thought to himself. But the last words of
Josephine Rutter that night kept rolling around in his head
until he could not shake them loose, “You’ll be coming back
to see me. A monster like this one always brings other
monsters out into the open.”
As he entered the bar and grill, Josephine Rutter,
stood behind the bar ritually drying some glasses, her back
to the door. “Told you you’d be back to see me,” she said
to him through the mirror above the bar.
“Good afternoon, Josephine, how are you?” he
asked as he sat down at the bar. “Not busy enough to
complain,” she summed up. Looking around at the empty
establishment, he concurred with a nod. She asked,
“What’ll you have?”
“Just a Coke, please. …You’ve heard, of course,
about the mountain lion and bear the hunters brought in,
didn’t you?”
She opened a cold can of soda and poured it like a
beer from the tap while considering her answer, “You don’t
think those animals were to blame do you?” She stared
right through him.
He turned his attention to his glass as if he were a
thirsty man. Looking up and sitting back he said, ‘No…No, I
don’t.” There, he had said it out loud – he had expressed
his worst fear. “I’m just afraid that Bill Myers really did see
something unusual, that you and my great aunt may be
right about some sort of flying creature, and that it will take
another shepherd’s abduction or murder or whatever it is to
open the folks to that reality.”
“For what it’s worth to you, Mayor, I think you’re
afraid of the right things here. But people won’t remember
history until it repeats itself in their own day and time.”
“Is that what you meant by ‘other monsters’?”
“What greater monster can there be than to be
looking at the truth and denying what you see?”
He looked up from his downward, inward cast and
recognized the wisdom she had just shared. The ringing of
his cell phone broke their thoughtfulness -- it was Chief Will.

A LABOR DAY PRAYER
In Pope Benedict XVI’s recent encyclical “Charity in
Truth (Caritas in Veritate)”, he calls for justice and dignity
for all workers and insists that economic systems should
work for people, rather than people serving the system.
Before your family picnic this Labor Day weekend, take a
moment to give thanks for the gift of work.
Lord, on this Labor Day,
We thank You for the blessing of work.
We ask for strength to complete each day.
We ask for rest when we are weary.
We ask Your guidance for everyone seeking
employment, and we ask that You be with
those whose faces we might never see
but who work tirelessly each day for the
good of us all.

CCD OPENING DAY - SEPTEMBER 19th
CCD begins September 19, 2010. Classes start at
8:30AM and we will be attending the 10:00AM
Mass.
In the Bible we read in Acts, Chapter 1
about Our Lord’s work being both Proclamation and
Action, and that He invited others to join Him. He
did this until He ascended into Heaven.
Our Catechists are accepting Our Lord’s
invitation and want to share Jesus’ love with our
students, help them to learn and understand our
Faith, and to live our Faith more fully. We are
beginning 2010 with Kindergarten Lisa Casciotti,
assistant Chris Casciotti; Gr.1 Jennifer DeLong,
assistant Nicholas DeLong; Gr. 2 Leigh Gorr,
assistant Danielle Fatzinger; Gr. 3 Regina

Once again we are placing our CCD
Program under the protection of Mary, Queen of
the Angels. Before the Archangel Gabriel asked
Mary to be the Mother of God’s Son, he wanted her
to know that she was truly full of Grace - more than
the angels and any other human - and so he
saluted her with “Hail Mary” as one would salute a
queen. Mary has the graces of wisdom, humility,
mercy, perfection, joy, peace, etc.,and so we ask
Mary to pour down graces on our Program this
year. She is our Mediatrix.

If you have not yet sent in your contribution for the
Bishop’s Appeal there is still time to do so. We

9:00AM to 1:00PM (rain or shine) at Salem UCC
Church, 615 Third Street, Catasauqua. There will
be Furniture, Electronics, Estate Sale Items and
lots of bargains. Also a Bake Sale, Silent Auction
and lots of good food with Jam, Jellies, Pickles and
Red Beets on sale.

St Mary’s Church, 122 Union Street, Catasauqua
will once again be holding their popular Bingo
Games, starting on Sunday, September 12th.

As in past Festivals, we are once again asking for
baked goods, such as: pies, cakes, cupcakes,
brownies, cookies, candy, breads or whatever is
your specialty. Bring your delicious creations to the
hall anytime on Saturday, September 25th. All of
your efforts will keep the crowd well fed and happy.

FESTIVAL SUPPORT
Final preparations are underway to make the
festival our most successful. To help monetarily,
take an envelope from the Support Board, fill it, and
then place it in the collection basket.

This Festival we are trying something NEW!
Instead of the traditional basket auction we are
asking parishioners to donate towards gift cards
which we will purchase from restaurants, stores, etc
and then chance off. Envelopes marked “Gift Card
