Dama de 104 años revela su
secreto para la longevidad
una mujer que precisamente la
semana pasada cumplió 104 años
de edad.
Celebró ese día tan especial
Bondadosa, bella y espiritual es en compañía de sus hijos, seres
como describe la señora Raquel a queridos que la protegen y la han
su madre, Doña Amadita Mora, cuidado durante los últimos años.
“Este día es muy importante
porque es mi cumpleaños y lo voy
a festejar junto a mis hijos que
tanto quiero”, dijo doña Amadita.
La atención que le han proporcionado sus hijos ha sido
indispensable para su bienestar.
Cualquiera podría imaginarse
que esta mujer ya se encuentra
en condiciones delicadas, sin
embargo a simple vista uno puede
darse cuenta de que doña Amadita
es una mujer inteligente, llena de
vida y que jamás perderá el estilo.
A sus 104 años de edad, la
centenaria dama me recibió con
una sonrisa, bien maquillada y
con un hermoso traje azul marino. Así fue como le cantaron
las mañanitas sus hijos, mientras
su hija Raquel tocaba el piano, y
entre lágrimas, la dichosa mujer
agradeció a sus hijos.
Doña Amadita vive con su
hija Raquel y con su esposo, el
Obispo retirado Joel Martínez. En
esa casa, la señora claramente se
dedica a disfrutar de sus días, a
orar por los demás y a leer lo que
tanta pasión le aporta.
“La Biblia es lo más importante
para mí, la leo todos los días.
Después de eso, el periódico La
Prensa es mi siguiente lectura”,
aseguró.

The City of San Antonio has
been recognized by the U.S
Chamber of Commerce as one
of the top “enterprising cities” in
the nation.
The report highlighted seven
cities in the country including
Memphis, Tennessee; Salt Lake
City, Utah; and Dayton, Ohio that
contribute and are able to sustain
prosperity and growth through
free enterprise–each in their own
unique way.
“What that means we are on the
cutting edge of innovation, job
creation and economic development, and that has lifted our city
to an enterprising city,” Richard
Perez, CEO for Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce said.
“ But it isn’t just because of us:
Bexar County, the Economic Development Foundation, SA2020,
the businesses community and
our utility companies SAWS and
CPS (Energy) all work together
to attract and bring more business
into the community,”
San Antonio was recognized for
its friendly business environment.
The Private and public sectors collaborated for the economic growth
and betterment of the city and
its residents. Thanks to that economic mentality, San Antonio was
able to add 20,000 jobs in 2012.
“I’m very proud of the City of
San Antonio and the tremendous
work it’s done. We are a team,
and it’s that collective power
that works for San Antonio. All
the indicators are that this city is
moving forward,” Bexar County
Judge Nelson Wolff said.
The next goal is to attract even
more businesses to San Antonio
and make them want to stay. It
shouldn’t be hard. After all, the
city is bursting to the seams with
potential and educational opportunities for everyone. There are 15
colleges and universities available
for students and the low cost of
living and the cultural diversity
makes it a wonderful place to be.

can to reach out to companies, to
ensure San Antonio is financially

The Witte Museum wants to
raise San Antonio’s health awareness, so it plans to bring in a new
exhibition next year that will
help visitors maintain a balanced,
healthy lifestyle.
Named “H-E-B Body Adventure,” the new addition has been
in the works since 2007 and will
be a highly interactive experience where kids and adults alike
will learn about the human body,
healthy eating, and exercising
techniques through a series of
educational displays and engaging
physical activities.

Méxodo: no es solo por los empleos

El estadio de Columbus,
Ohio, estaba vestido de rojo y
blanco, los mismos colores de
las siete barras rojas y seis blancas de la bandera de Estados
Unidos. Busqué en el monitor
de la televisión algunas camisetas verdes que indicaran la
presencia de algunos fanáticos
del equipo mexicano, pero no
la encontré. Estaban ahí, pero
no se veían.
Por eso escogieron ese estadio. No es un secreto que
cada vez que Estados Unidos
y México juegan un partido de
fútbol en territorio norteamericano buscan un estadio donde
haya más seguidores del equipo
de las barras y las estrellas.
Pero no es cosa fácil. El fútbol
(“soccer,” como le dicen aquí)
no es tan popular como el fútbol americano, el básquetbol
o el béisbol. Y cuando se trata
de un partido para clasificar al
Mundial de Brasil 2014, los
mexicanos siguen a su selección
a donde sea. Incluso a Ohio. No
importa cuántos años estén en
Estados Unidos, siguen apo
yando al equipo mexicano.
Lástima que están siguiendo
a una selección perdedora.
México perdió ese partido 2
a 0 frente a Estados Unidos y
está a punto de ser eliminado
del campeonato mundial. Esto
me recuerda la época en que
algunos en la prensa escrita
llamaban “ratoncitos verdes” a
los jugadores de equipo mexicano; por malos, por su actitud
derrotista y, sobre todo, por no
echarle ganas. Y desde luego,
el equipo mexicano no sintió el
amor de las tribunas en Ohio.
La población hispana de
Columbus no llega ni al 6 por
ciento, según datos del último
censo, a pesar de que el nombre
de la ciudad lleva el apellido
del descubridor de América. En
comparación, los latinos somos
el 17 por ciento de la población
de Estados Unidos. Si el partido
de fútbol hubiera sido en Los
Angeles, Chicago, San Antonio,
Miami o Nueva York, el estadio
habría estado pintado de verde,
no de rojo y blanco. En Columbus, simplemente, no hay tantos
mexicanos.
Lo ocurrido en ese estadio es
la excepción. Los mexicanos
nacidos en México han pasado
de menos de un millón en 1970
a 11.4 millones el año pasado,
según datos del Pew Hispanic
Center. Es decir, estamos por
todos lados.
Este “Méxodo” surgió, como
todo fenómeno migratorio,
por algo que los expulsaba de
México y algo que los atraía
de Estados Unidos. El primer
impulso del Méxodo fue por la
búsqueda de trabajos. Uno de
cada 10 mexicanos se ha ido.
Los priístas nunca crearon
suficientes empleos para evitar
esta migración. La llegada de la
democracia a México en el 2000
no fue una varita mágica. Sacó
a la dictadura del PRI después
de 71 años, pero no creó los em-
pleos que México necesitaba.
Los panistas tampoco.
Tanto el presidente Vicente
Fox, del PRI, como Felipe
Calderón, del PAN, me dijeron
en entrevistas que podrían crear
más de un millón de empleos
al año. Pues habrá sido en sus
sueños porque ninguno de los
dos siquiera se acercó a esa cifra. Ahora, el reto para Enrique
Peña Nieto es el mismo: crear
las condiciones para que más
mexicanos decidan quedarse
en México.
Esos jóvenes mexicanos
que no encontraron empleo en
México los hallaron en Estados
Unidos y con salarios mucho
mayores. Es muy tentador
para un mexicano, que gana 5
dólares al día en México, venir
a Estados Unidos donde puede
ganar lo mismo en media hora.
Más de la mitad de todos esos
mexicanos están trabajando
ilegalmente en Estados Unidos.
Ese es el primer Méxodo.
El segundo Méxodo es mucho
más reciente. Debido a la narcoviolencia que cobró al menos
60 mil muertos en el sexenio
de Calderón (2006-2012) – y
que el gobierno de Peña Nieto
tampoco ha podido detener –
vemos algunos cambios en el
tipo de mexicano que viene. La
crisis económica que entró en el
2008 se ha hecho sentir y, por
lo tanto, los mexicanos ya no
vienen a Estados Unidos solo a
buscar trabajo.
Datos demográficos de Pew
apoyan esta afirmación: en
2011, más mujeres emigraron
de México a Estados Unidos
que antes (47 por ciento contra
25 por ciento en 1990); la edad
promedio de los inmigrantes mexicanos fue de 38 años,
contra 29 años en 1990; más
inmigrantes con diplomas de
preparatoria llegaron a Estados
Unidos (24 por ciento contra
12 por ciento en 1990), y otro
tanto ocurrió con quienes tenían
educación universitaria (17 por
ciento contra 13 por ciento).
De hecho, en el pasado los
inmigrantes mexicanos quizá
provinieran de áreas rurales,
pero muchos de los nuevos inmigrantes son familias urbanas
de clase media.
El Méxodo es un fenómeno
vivo y, por ahora, no se va a
detener. Setecientas millas de
muro y 40 mil agentes en la
frontera no podrán detener a
miles de mexicanos que tiene
hambre, miedo a los narcos y
la esperanza de una vida mejor
en el norte. Y tarde o temprano,
pintarán de verde una parte del
estadio de Columbus, Ohio.
O en Dakota del Norte. O en
Alaska. O a dondequiera que
lleven al equipo mexicano de
fútbol para que no se sienta
solito y vuelva a perder.

Latino health in Texas is
lacking

Did you know that 38 percent of Latinos in Texas are
uninsured, compared to only
13.5 percent of non-Hispanic
whites? And of the 6.1 million
uninsured Texans, more than
half (3.3 million) are Hispanic?
The results of that can be
seen in Latino health outcomes.
We are much less likely to receive preventive care such as
screenings for cancer, blood
pressure, cholesterol, heart
disease, sexually transmitted
diseases, and diabetes. We are
almost twice as likely to have
diabetes than non-Hispanic
whites.
Also, Hispanics experience
new HIV infections at 2.5
times the rate of whites, and
Latina women contract cervical cancer at twice the rate of
non-Hispanic whites.
While everyone needs health
care, clearly Latinos are a
community that is medically
underserved.
On September 5, I was privileged to be on a panel in San
Antonio hosted by The Texas
Tribune titled, “The Future
of Latino Health Care,” along
with Dr. Esteban López, a
regional president for Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Dr.
Amelie Ramirez, director of the
Institute for Health Promotion
Research at the University of
Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio.
It was an enlightening and
engaging discussion, as we
tried to look at both myths and
facts about Latinos and health.
For example, we discussed
how our cultura affects our
health care — such as how it
won’t do much good to talk
about good health strategies
with Señor Rodriguez if Señora
Rodriguez is not also in the
room, since she’s probably the
one who runs the household and
can implement those strategies.
We also talked about what
our cultura does not do. Too
often Latino cultural factors get
blamed for high rates of obesity
among us, when of course the
real villain is poverty.
And our state government
isn’t helping — when the state
cut its Women’s Health Program, or it has rules that only
grant Medicaid benefits for 60
days after birth, that deprives
our low-income folks of the
preventive care that might keep
them out of the emergency
room.
The ongoing implementation
of the Affordable Care Act
(ACA, or “Obamacare”) will
help, although not as much
as it could. The new Health
Care Exchanges set up by the
federal government will help
24 million people currently
uninsured to find coverage
they can afford. If you’re one
of those people, the website
BeCoveredTexas.org can help
you get signed up. (Sign-up
begins October 1 for coverage
that will begin January 1.)
Unfortunately, our state leaders, mostly in the Republican
Party, have fought the ACA
tooth and nail and rejected an
expansion of Medicaid in Texas
that could bring even more
people into the fold. If those
leaders would change their
minds, the number of uninsured
Texans would be cut in half.
Which leads me to another
way you can improve Texas
health care: VOTE. As much
as Latinos are overrepresented
in bad health statistics, they
are just as underrepresented at
the ballot box. For next year’s
elections, get registered and
then cast your vote only for
candidates that will make the
right decisions for Texas families and our health, making it
easier to get everyone insured.

State of the District Address
Eagle Ford Shale Development, water, and road infrastructure topped the list of
issues in the annual State of the
District address by Sen. Carlos Uresti, who vowed he will
continue to seek alternatives to
gravel road conversions in Senate District 19.
Uresti has been working with
fellow legislators, county and
city officials, TxDOT, and other
stakeholders on the agency’s
plan to convert 83 miles — and
perhaps up to 400 miles — of
paved roads into gravel in oil
and gas producing regions.
“It’s no secret that I’m not
a fan of this proposal,” Uresti
said. “TxDOT needs to revisit
this approach. It takes us down
the wrong road, and we need to
find a better way.”
Uresti has already negotiated
a 60 day moratorium for roads
targeted for conversion, giving
counties an opportunity to seek
alternatives. Now he wants TxDOT to develop strict criteria
for identifying potential conversions, give local leaders more
advanced notice, and establish a
timetable for converting gravel
back to pavement.
Noting that transportation
and water infrastructure are
critical to the state’s economy,
Uresti urged voters to support
Proposition 6 in the November
election, which will provide
$2.1 million from the rainy day
fund for water projects, and a
second amendment that will
be on the ballot next year that
would provide an additional
$1.2 billion for road construction and maintenance.
“Many of our highways and
bridges are reaching the end of
their lifespans. That means it’s
going to take more investment
just to maintain and reconstruct
them, much less add additional
capacity,” Uresti said Wednesday at the Chamber’s 17th
Annual State of the District Address. “With more than 51,000
bridges and almost 200,000

to take care of.

Proper English has
become a serious matter
The term Political Correctness
has been around longer than
most people believe. It surfaced
in the early-to-mid-20th century.
However, it wasn’t until the
1970s that it became part of the
main stream. A series of articles
by such individuals as Toni
Cade Bambara, Booby London
and others, along with cartoonist
Bart Dickon brought the term
to light.
In decades to follow, it became a part of debate. Talk
radio ranted about it. While its
counterpart, had no problem
with it and welcomed the new
way to communicate in everyday English.
Recently, Alex Jones’ Infowars.com published an article
by Michael Snyder entitled, “19
Shocking Examples of How Political Correctness is Destroying
America.”
According to Snyder, saying the wrong thing in today’s
America could result in you
being penalized, fired or even
taken to court.
He cites George Orwell’s
classic, “1984.” Those who have
read it and are involved in the
ongoing discussion enjoy dwelling on the term “Newspeak,”
found in the 1949 classic. They
contend, as Snyder puts, that it
bears a striking resemblance to
the political correctness taking
place in today’s America. To
quote Sonny & Cher, “…and the
beat goes on.”
The following are some the
examples used by Snyder re-
garding political correctness and
how they’re wrong:
• A rodeo clown has been
banned from ever performing at
the Missouri State Fair. The reason is for he doing what rodeo
clowns have done as far back
as most can remember, donning
a mask of a celebrity and being
chased around by the bulls that
he’s there to taunt as he protects
the riders. Unfortunately, the
mask this clown wore was of
the president. Of course this is
not the first time that poking fun
at a presidential likeness has
been done. Since the time of
Lyndon B .Johnson, Halloween
masks have been used for fun
and entertainment. At one time,
the Richard Nixon mask was the
best seller.
• In the land from where Starbucks comes, government workers in Seattle have been told
that they should no longer use
the words “citizen” and “brown
bag” in official documents because in theory they’re potentially offensive. “Residents”
they feel would be a better term
and not “citizens.” “Brown bag”
is obvious. They prefer “lunchand-learn” or “sack lunch.”
The list goes on and on.
Should you decide to read the
article you’ll see that the 19
reasons quoted get weirder as
you continue to read.
“Buyer, beware” is an all
too familiar phrase. As the politically correct matter continues
to grow, it may soon be said,
“Speaker, beware.”

A un payaso de rodeo se le
ha prohibido actuar en la Feria
Estatal de Missouri. El motivo es
por hacer lo que los payasos de
rodeo han hecho desde que yo me
acuerdo, llevar una máscara de
una celebridad y ser perseguido
por los toros a los que tiene burlar
mientras protege a los jinetes.
Desafortunadamente, la máscara
que este payaso usó era una del
presidente. Desde luego que esta
no es la primera vez que alguien
se divierte a costa de alguien con
su parecido. Desde los tiempos
de Lyndon B. Johnson, las máscaras de Halloween se han usado
para diversión y entretenimiento.
Hubo un tiempo en que la máscara de Richard Nixon era la
máscara más vendida.
En la tierra de donde proviene
Starbucks, a los trabajadores
gubernamentales en Seattle se
les ha dicho que ya no pueden
usar las palabras “ciudadano”
y “brown bag” en documentos
oficiales porque en teoría, son
potencialmente ofensivas. Creen
que “residentes” sería un mejor
término y no “ciudadanos”. Y
“Brown bag” es obvia. Prefieren
usar “almorzar y aprender” o
“bolsita de almuerzo”.
La lista sigue y sigue. Si decide
leer el artículo verá que las 19
razones citadas se vuelven cada
vez más raras conforme sigue
leyendo.
“Buyer, beware” es una frase
demasiado conocida. A medida
que la política apropiada continua creciendo, pronto tal vez se
diga: “Speaker, beware”.

“ObamaCare… Let’s talk!”
Today we’ll begin addressing
the “individual mandate”. This is
a provision in the federal health
care law that a) requires you, your
children and anyone else you claim
as a dependent on your taxes to
have health insurance in 2014….
OR…. b) pay a penalty.
The “individual mandate” is
one of the key building blocks
of ObamaCare hoping to create
more affordable health care in our
country. The idea is simply this:
with more people buying health
insurance in our country, health
insurance rates/costs will eventually begin to drop. How can this be
achieved? In theory, a larger “pool
of prospective customers” creates
“greater competition” amongst
the private insurance companies
for these new customers. As more
citizens get health insurance, a
general rule in our capitalistic economic system is that competition
generates more competitive rates
for customers.
Here are some findings that have
been reported by a U.S. government agency studying the Patient
Protection Affordable Care Act:
• The Congressional Budget Office estimates that in 2014, nearly
three out of five Americans will
have health coverage through an
employer.
• If you have insurance through
Medicaid, the Children’s Health
Insurance Network – C.H.I.P- or
federal-state programs, you are
not affected. These programs provide insurance for lower income
Americans and cover another 12%
of Americans.
• If you are covered by Medicare, you are not affected by the
new health care law.
• The mandate is primarily
aimed at approximately 57 million
people younger than 65 who do not
have insurance at this time.
Hopefully this information will
give you a little better idea of the
impact ObamaCare may have on
you and your family. Next time,
we’ll start exploring the Healthcare
State Exchange and the “metal”
coverage options available through
federally/state supported websites.

Prepare sus bicicletas para el próximo Siclovía

Por segunda vez en este año, ha
llegado la temporada de salir a las
calles y disfrutar del rico clima de
San Antonio. Por esto Siclovía
incita a todas las personas a que
se preparen para el gran evento
que será de 10 a.m. a 3 p.m. el
próximo domingo 29 de septiembre sobre la calle Broadway, la
cual estará cerrada para el tráfico
de automóviles, y abierta para
todos los que lleven su bicicleta.
La calle Broadway estará cerra
da desde la calle Mulberry hasta
Alamo Plaza, por lo que los que
deseen asistir deberán llevar su
bicicleta. Si no cuentan con una,
entonces lleven todas sus energías
para correr y divertirse en grande.
Siclovía es un evento de YM
CA y es presentado por H-E-B,
así que se esperan grandes sorpresas que la comunidad podrá
disfrutar.
“Este evento no requiere de
inscripción y es gratuito, pero sí
queremos invitar a toda la comunidad a que se registren para el
5K y participen antes de que comience el evento”, señaló Mónica
Garza, directora de bienestar
comunitario de YMCA of Greater
San Antonio.
El evento dará inicio a las 10
a.m. en Alamo Plaza con una
ceremonia de inauguración, sin
embargo el mini maratón de 5
kilómetros dará comienzo a las 8
a.m. y tiene un costo de $25 por
persona.
“Habrán muchas actividades
divertidas y sin costo durante
todo el día”, comentó Garza. “Estamos orgullosos de poder llevar
a cabo este evento tan divertido,
saludable y lleno de actividades

Los participantes pasarán por
una ruta ya planeada por los organizadores de Siclovía, y durante
el recorrido podrán encontrarse
con actividades de “Reclovía”.
Reclovía se refiere a las áreas
que incluyen actividades grupales
y demostraciones de ejercicio
como, arte en las calles con gis,
clases de tenis en la calle, podrán
brincar la cuerda, jugar fútbol
soccer, y andar en patineta.
“Habrán clases de zumba, yoga,
pilates, y además una sección
con vendedores de comida y una
sección educativa para adultos”,
explicó Garza.
El evento Siclovía es divertido
y ya se lleva a cabo en distintas
partes del país y hasta en otros
países. Dio comienzo en Bogotá
(Colombia) y en Estados Unidos
el más grande se lleva a cabo en
Los Ángeles.
Gracias al apoyo de la comunidad de San Antonio, ha dejado
gran éxito en años pasados en la
ciudad.
En octubre del año pasado
asistieron 45,000 personas, y se
espera que en este Siclovía asistan
65,000. San Antonio cuenta con
el Siclovía más grande de Texas,
y forma parte de uno de los más
grandes en el país.

Mentiras que hieren, mentiras
piadosas e inofensivas, mentiras
agudas, mentiras escondidas. Yo
creo que todos alguna vez hemos
dicho mentiras para cubrirnos
de alguna situación, de algún
problem a o hasta de algo que
hicimos mal sin darnos cuenta.
Es muy común decir mentiras,
incluso en nuestro subconsciente
decimos mentiras cuando no queremos hacer sentir mal a alguien,
o cuando queremos ocultar algo
que sabemos que va a traernos
graves problemas, sin embargo
es importante saber hasta dónde
debemos llegar con las mentiras
y además saber, ¿por qué lo
hacemos?
Algunas veces las mentiras
son la mejor estrategia para protegernos de problemas, para protegernos de las malas intenciones
de los demás o hasta para cuidar
nuestros valores y reputación
ante los demás para no herirlos.
El fin de semana me arreglé
para salir con mis amigas y le
pregunté a una amiga si me veía
bien con lo que traía puesto, a lo
que me respondió que me veía
súper bien y que ni se me ocu
rriera cambiarme.
Pero algo me decía que no me
veía muy bien. Además me sentía
incómoda, pero le hice caso a mi
amiga y así me fui a la fiesta.
Cuando llegué al lugar, una de
las invitadas que por cierto yo ni
conocía, sin pelos en la lengua y
con mucha honestidad me dijo:
“Oye, perdón que me meta pero
se te ven los calzones con esa
falda. Se transparenta todo, deberías cambiarte”.
Yo muerta de coraje fui con mi
amiga y le dije: “Tú me habías
dicho que no se me transparentaba nada, y me acaban de decir
que sí”.
Mi amiga me respondió:
“Perdón, no me di cuenta y si
te decía te ibas a tardar más en
cambiarte y nunca íbamos a salir
de la casa”.
En este caso, la tipa me mintió
para salir de la casa y disfrutar
un rato más de la fiesta. O sea,
utilizó una mentira a su conveniencia.
Es terrible mentir, porque a
veces no es tu intención hacerlo
y en el momento creas un mundo
de mentiras.
Un mundo de mentiras porque
una lleva a la otra. En mi caso,
yo no sé si mi amiga quería de
verdad irse en ese momento, o si
lo que quería era opacarme y ha
cerme ver menos bonita que ella.
Es difícil dejar de mentir, pero
si te lo propones, incluso podrías
crear un mundo lleno de sinceridad en ti mismo que te hará sentir
tranquila y en paz.
Recuerda que bien dicen, “El
que nada debe, nada teme”. En el
caso de mi amiga, si lo que quería
era irse a la fiesta, lo que debió
haber dicho era: “La verdad sí se
te transparenta tu ropa interior,
pero no quiero esperarte mucho.
Si no te apresuras te voy a tener
que ver allá”.
Con unas palabras similares
a esas, la persona sabe que su
amistad es sincera y además recibe el mensaje claro. Si lo que
quiere la persona es opacar a los
demás, entonces tú deberás fijarte
bien en su lenguaje corporal y
observando sus gestos.
Lo más importante es la autenticidad, y si tu problema es el
hacer sentir mal a la otra persona,
entonces recuerda que mientras
sepas cómo decir las cosas y
tengas tacto al comentar, no hay
por qué mentir.

contribuir al plan de retiro 401(k)?

Andrés: Buena pregunta, Catalina. Esto cae en el pasito #4 del
Plan Financiero. Eso significa que
usted no contribuye ni un centavo
al 401(k) a menos que esté libre
de deudas (excepto la casa) y
tenga un fondo de emergencia de
3 a 6 meses. Si ese no es el caso,
enfóquese en pagar las deudas
(pasito #2) y construir el Fondo de
Emergencia (pasito #3). Es muy
importante hacer los pasitos en
orden porque de esa forma estará
creando una base sólida sobre la
cual puede construir riqueza con
sus cuentas de retiro.
El fondo de emergencia es
lo que protege las inversiones.
Muchas personas que deciden
hacer el plan fuera de orden van
y empiezan su 401(k), y cuando
los patea la vida, sacan dinero
del 401(k) o comienzan a pedir
prestado. Por eso es importante
hacerlo en orden. Aunque le tome
un año para ahorrar el Fondo de
Emergencia, debe poner un alto
al 401(k) y hacer los pasitos en el
orden adecuado. Ahora, cuando
ya esté libre de deudas y tenga
un Fondo de Emergencia, el pasito #4 es donde va a invertir el
15% de su ingreso en cuentas de
jubilación. Eso es lo que se llama
“construir su casa sobre la roca”,
porque si construye sobre la arena,
cualquier viento o marea le tumba
la casa.
Yo recomiendo que contribuya
en el 401(k) hasta la cantidad que
le igualan. Por ejemplo, si la compañía le iguala un 6%, usted va a
poner el 6% de su ingreso anual en
el 401(k). El otro 9%, para llegar
al 15%, lo pone en una cuenta de
ROTH IRA. Esta es una cuenta
de jubilación fuera del 401(k)

community, the United Soybean
Board is encouraging Latinos to

Just a Thought: The “Bolillo”

In 1978-79 the year before
I taught at La Memorial High
School in Edgewood, which I
wrote about last week and the
Westside and Southside Suns for
a brief stint, I taught at Pearce
Elementary School in Southside
ISD. I was a migrant reading
teacher, pulling students out from
their regular classes during the
day and working with them in
the library.
One day after finishing lunch
duty in the cafeteria I was walking
down the hallway back to my designated teaching area when one of
my second grade migrant reading
students passed me on her way
to her regular class. She paused
for a moment and said “Hello
Mr. Walker,” in her sweet voice
and then took me by surprise by
asking me, “Mr. Walker, are you
a bolillo?”
Not knowing how to respond,
since I wasn’t familiar with the
term at the time, I answered,
“Graciela, I am not sure, but I
will get back with you later on it,
okay? She smiled and nodded and
walked on to her class.
Immediately, I marched into
the teacher’s lounge down the
hall looking for a fellow teacher,
preferably a Hispanic teacher who
could tell me the definition of a
“bolillo!” I had no idea if it was
good or bad, that she believed me
to be one.
Miss Guzman one of the first
grade teachers was in the faculty
lounge, and I told her one of my
students asked me the question if
I was a “bolillo.” Her answer was
short and to the point, “In English
it means a piece of white bread.”
“Really,” I answered with a
puzzled look on my face. “You
mean she is calling me a piece of
white bread?”
She laughed and replied, “It is
another word for “gringo.” She
then asked me, “How did she
say it?
I answered, “What do you
mean?”
She explained, “Did she casually just ask the question ‘Are you
a bolillo?,’ with a smile or ‘Are
you a bolillo?,’ with a little snarl
on her face as if accusing you?”
I answered that it sounded like
an innocent question to me. Miss
Guzman then informed me she
was using it as a term of endearment not an insult. Boy, was I
relieved.
The more I thought of it the
happier I got. Graciela said I was
a “bolillo.” Therefore, it was so.
For the rest of the year and for
many years later when I taught in
the predominately Hispanic community, I referred to myself as
the “bolillo.” I was also referred
to by other Hispanic words but I
am not at liberty to share those
particular ones with the reader!
I’m just kidding.
Later in my teaching career
at La Memorial in Edgewood,
La Techla, in SAISD and in 12
years in Harlandale ISD I was
able to learn so much more about
the Hispanic community and
appreciate the rich culture and
write about those in the Hispanic
community who do so much for
the community as a whole not just
for one segment of it. We are all
in this together.
Anyway, as always, what I
write is “Just a Thought.”

Rusia quiere contrabalancear
la influencia militar y política de
EEUU en el Medio Oriente. A pesar
de la impopularidad de EEUU entre
el público general, la influencia que
tiene se aprecia al ver un mapa de
esta región y contar cuantos países
tienen relaciones importantes o
mutualmente benéficas (aunque no
perfectas) con los Estados Unidos.
Son casi todos, con las excepciones notables de Siria e Irán. Por
ejemplo, la Quinta Flota de los
Estados Unidos está basada en Bahréin en el Golfo de Persa. ‘Drones’
conducen operaciones en Yemen
con frecuencia. Arabia Saudita
exportó 1.4 millones de barriles
de petróleo “por día” a EEUU en
2012, casi la quinta parte de sus
exportaciones de petróleo crudo.
Los militares egipcios dependen de la ayuda externa militar

1979).

es fuera de lo común. Francia aún
lleva un peso importante en sus excolonias africanas, lo cual explica
por qué los presidentes Sarkozy
y Hollandaise, respectivamente,
intervinieron en las guerras civiles
en Costa de Marfil en 2011 y Mali
en 2013. A la vez, Rusia tiene, de
hecho, una esfera de influencia en
Asia Central, donde se encuentran
cinco exrepúblicas soviéticas.

una Siria inestable que una con un
nuevo gobierno que este aliado con,
o por lo menos más cerca a, EEUU.
La última razón por la cual Rusia
se opone a una intervención militar
en Siria es porque pierde muy poco
al tomar esta posición.
Hasta mayorías de estadouni
denses se han opuesto a una intervención limitada y estrecha,
según algunas encuestas. Para
ellos, y especialmente para el
resto del mundo, las similitudes
con la invasión de Iraq en 2003
son preocupantes. Ambas intervenciones se han justificado en base a
evidencia de posesión (o uso) de
“armas de destrucción masiva”, el
presidente parece estar siguiendo
adelante a pesar de oposición fuerte
de elementos domésticos y aliados
internacionales, y se trata de un
país árabe.
Siria no es Iraq, y Obama no es
Bush. A pesar de esto, Putin ha logrado una victoria en sus esfuerzos
por contrarrestar a su contrincante
geopolítico. El Kremlin podrá cele
brar este hecho, pero aún sabe que
la Casa Blanca mantiene la ventaja
en esta parte del mundo.

over 30 months. Dr. Turner will
lead a multi-institutional team
studying different approaches

will be tested in Frio County
and a separate one in Karnes
County. The South Central
Area Health Education Center
and the UT School of Public
Health are key collaborators in
the project. Dr. Turner is director of the Research to Advance
Community Health (ReACH)

and is director of health outcomes research for University

matrimonio. Un cónyuge elegible que posteriormente califique una propiedad diferente

para autorizar préstamos de hipoteca inversa para la compra

además de los usos legales actuales de esos préstamos y daría a
los prestamistas un recurso contra los prestatarios que no ocupen oportunamente las propie-

sampling. Ultimately, the evaluation of these two sampling
methods will be used by the
research team in collaboration
with community partners to
develop a protocol for involv-
ing patients and stakeholders
in patient-centered outcomes
research.
Dawn Velligan, Ph.D., professor and chief of the Division of Schizophrenia in the
Department of Psychiatry, was
awarded $928,845 over three
years. Dr. Velligan is involved
in running a 90-day transitional
care clinic for patients with
serious mental illness who are
leaving the hospital. The goal
is to smooth the transition to
outpatient treatment and prevent
repeated re-hospitalizations or
emergency room visits.
The PCORI grant will be used
to examine two approaches to
transitional treatment to see
which is more effective: a more
traditional model versus an approach that increases patient
engagement and emphasizes
shared decision-making between patient and health care
provider.
“We created the transitional
clinic because the hospital
readmission rate for serious
mental illness was so high in
Bexar County,” Dr. Velligan
said. “People end up using
the emergency room as their
primary care doctor for mental
health. Our clinic is intended
to take care of people until we
can connect them with services
in our community.”

Congreso No. 147 derogaría
la tasa impositiva máxima de
la Constitución de Texas para
un distrito de hospital en el
Condado de Hidalgo. La tasa
máxima actualmente es de 10
centavos por $100 de valuación.
Esta tasa es inferior a la tasa impositiva máxima permitida para
los distritos de hospital en todos
los demás condados del Estado
(75 centavos por $100 de valuación). La derogación del tope
constitucional permitiría que las
tasas impositivas de los distritos
de hospital en el Condado de
Hidalgo sean iguales a las tasas
impositivas de distritos de hospital establecidas por leyes aplicables a todos los demás condados de Texas.

Local Laundromat pioneers

Laundromats are typically
not very pleasant places to be.
Between the chain smoker sitting to the left of you, the pile of
abandoned socks by the outdated
machines and the constant threat
that someone’s going to steal your
quarters, going to such a place is a
chore that everyone dreads.
That’s not including the fear
of the germs or questioning the
forgotten clothes prior users may
have left. Uh, yeah…let’s not go
there. Fortunately, there is a new
Laundromat in town that’s creating a new standard. This place is
clean, the staff is friendly, and it’s
good for the environment.
Tiberio Erdely and his wife,
Peggy, are the pioneers behind
San Antonio Green Laundry, the
first and only eco-friendly Laundromat in the city. These guys are
making the earth a better place,
one load at a time.
“When it comes to helping the
environment, everyone says its
somebody else’s job. If everyone
thinks like that, then who’s going
to do it,” Tiberio asked.
Instead of the rattling outdated
speed queens everyone is so accustomed to, Erdely has installed
the latest laundry technology and
LED lights in his Laundromat,
which cut energy and water consumption by 60 percent. One
machine can hold up to eight
loads of laundry at the same time.
You won’t find any abandoned
piles of clothes or dust at San
Antonio Green Laundry. Nor,
will you have to worry about
customers who’ve washed before.
“We make sure to sanitize
each and every machine after it is
used. We like to keep it clean for
everyone,” Tiberio said.
Quarters are also a thing of the
past at San Antonio Green Laundry. Instead of carrying around a
bag of change, pre money-loaded
laundry card are used. For every $20 spent, an additional 10
percent is loaded in the card. On
the week of your birthday, you
receive a complimentary wash
for one load.
San Antonio Laundry provides
a washing and folding service. It
costs $1 per pound, and the minimum they accept is 10. They use
hypoallergenic detergent, which
is more cost effective, all natural,
and keeps clothes brilliant longer.
There is something else that
distinguishes San Antonio Green
Laundry from the rest: customer
service. The business is open from
7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., but is often
open later. The Erdely’s often stay
later than regular hours to insure
every customer’s loads are done.
They do not turn away anyone.
It takes about an hour and a half
for a full load to be completely
washed, dried and folded, so they
have often stayed until 11 p.m.
Now that’s service you don’t see
at every Laundromat.
“We emphasize on giving good
service. We make sure to take
care of our customers, and that’s
a priority,” Tiberio said.

Two local healthcare systems sign
Memorandum of Understanding

Add another name to the San
Antonio’s medical community
working towards a children’s
hospital.
Last Friday afternoon it was
made known the Methodist
Healthcare System of San Antonio (MHS) and the University of
Texas Health Science Center at
San Antonio signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In
the agreement both will work “to
explore and identify opportunities
to affiliate to provide pre-eminent
pediatric care, academic training
and research in San Antonio and
the South Texas region.”
The announcement comes a
little over a year after CHRISTUS
Santa Rosa revealed its plans to
develop a world-class children’s
hospital in downtown San Antonio.
On hand for the announcement
at the UT Health Science Center
were Jaime Wesolowski, president and CEO of the Methodist
Healthcare System and President
of the UT Health Science Center,
Dr. William Henrich.
“There is no question in our
minds that this new opportunity between University of Texas
Health Science Center and Methodist Healthcare System is the
strongest and most viable solution
to enhancing care for children in
our region,” Wesolowski said.
“The combination of both of our
organizations that have been pediatric leaders in our respective fields
for many years, will create a new
delivery model that will be comparable to the most well-known
and respected children’s hospitals
in the United States.”
Henrich added: “We’re neighbors across the street, and this new
association, we hope, will forge a
new beginning for children’s care
in our region. We’re committed to
doing this, to trying this, and we’ll
spend the next bit of time in the
Memorandum of Understanding
timeframe to work out the details
and we are very hopeful for a positive outcome.”
The MOU allows the MHS and
the UT Health Science Center to
consult with one another for a pe-
riod of 90 days, during which they
will seek input from all investors
and attempt to negotiate a definitive agreement to create these new
programs.
According to the press release,
the MOU covers the following
nine key areas of collaboration:
• Relationship of the involved
parties
• Medical education and training
• Clinical care
• Research
• Facilities
• Network development
• Leadership and governance
• Access to information
• Interconnected technology
Due to the confidentiality of the
negotiations, no further information will be provided until a mutual
decision is reached.

Food Bank apoyando la campaña
“Hunger Action Month”.
Al mismo tiempo, el jueves
pasado, de 1 de a 5 de la tarde, un
entusiasta grupo de empleados
de BBVA Compass laboraron,
como voluntarios, en el proceso
diario de seleccionar alimentos y
empacarlos en las líneas de producción del Food Bank, en donde
diariamente existe una febril actividad de empaque y distribución
de alimentos hacia los centros de

Beginning in 2014, the only
high school equivalency exam is
implementing significant changes.
The new test series will shift down
from 5 subject exams to 4 and all
exams must be computerized.
Currently, the 2002 GED series
consists of timed exams in writing,
social studies, science reading and
math. The new series will combine
writing and reading into a single
subject exam, Reasoning through
Language Arts (RLA).
The difficulty level of the questions and content in all four subject
areas are expected to increase
significantly to align the test with
current standards of high school
completion, according to President
and CEO of GED Testing Service,
Trudy Trask.
Since all exams will be computerized, same-day scoring on
all four parts of the exam will
be permitted. Test-takers will no
longer have to wait weeks to start
applying for jobs, for college or to
retake the test.
Although each individual exam
will still be timed, computerized
testing will also allow students to
take the four different segments of
the test at their own pace.
“The new experience in 2014 is
really all about putting the test taker into the middle of the process, in
the past they had a limited number
of days that they could take a test,
they would be required to take all
five of their subjects over a one or
two day period and I think that was
really contributing to a lot of test
taker anxiety,” said Trask.

“Right now, this is a perfect
storm of sedentary lifestyle and
processed foods, and so that’s
one of the struggles we all have in
living in this modern society. To
really combat that, we are offering
a healthy, exciting way to be in the
world,” she said.
The H-E-B Body Adventure will
replace the popular H-E-B Science
Treehouse exhibit that has been a
part of the Witte for many years.
The treehouse will close its doors
in early January of 2014 and will
reopen as the new exhibit four
months later on May 24.
“H-E-B Science Treehouse
will be completely transformed
to the H-E-B Buddy Adventure,”
McDermott said. “It will involve
indoor-outdoor, revolutionary,
never-before-seen interactive experiences on health and wellness.”
State-of-the-art activities will
include the South Texas Trail
Blaze, where visitors will be able
to cycle virtually through a virtual
San Antonio River landscape and
monitor their heart rate. Work Your
Walk, is another interactive activity
where participants will learn about
walking speed and stride length.
All activities will be accessed
via a POWERpass, a card that will

online after their museum visit.
“Everybody will get a POWERpass so it will be an authentic
health experience for every single
person who does physical activities and spends the day changing
themselves. So you’ll be able to experience transformational change
in the H-E-B Buddy Adventure,”
McDermott explained.
With every swipe of the POWERpass, an H-E-B Body Adventure
Buddy will accompany visitors and
will show up on screens and help
them go through the stations.
Young Women’s Leadership
Academy 7th grader Lexie Rodriguez was chosen to be to be an
H-E-B Body Adventure Buddy after
she auditioned for the role at age 10.
“It’s a really good thing,” the
12-year-old Rodriguez said of the
new exhibit. “I’ve always loved the
Witte’s H-E-B Treehouse and the
stuff that’s going to be here now is
going to be way better. It’s going
to be more interactive.”
Rodriguez added that the exhibit is “a little bit more geared
for kids because it’s a step-by-step
process,” but everyone will be welcome to participate in the activities.

One of the main targets the city
wishes to attract is the aerospace
industry. The vision is to have former military base Brooks AFB and
Port San Antonio become home
for other aerospace industries to
come and stay.

The new display will not come
cheap, which is why the Witte
established partnerships to help
fund this new project.
“It’s a $5 million project but,
as always, the Witte goes and
seeks partnerships to fund that,”
McDermott explained. “This is
something that we worked very
closely on with H-E-B, Blue
Cross Blue Shield, the University Health System – it’s actually
powered by the University Health
System, so there’ll be a lot of
metrics and data to really track
how people experience healthy
change.”
Some of the Witte’s additional
partners include the San Antonio
Metropolitan Health District and
AETNA health insurance.
While the grand opening is
not until next year, the Witte
Museum, its partners, and even
some visitors are already preparing themselves for the positive
outcomes from this exhibition.
“Already, from our prototyping
of programs, demonstrations, and
exhibitions, we know that the
H-E-B Buddy Adventure will be
transformative for this museum
and this community,” McDermott said.
“Port San Antonio is the place
for our aerospace industry today.
We are looking on what’s going on
at the Port, re-evaluating the mission–nothing was set up 20 years
ago, and making sure we are on the
right track¬,” Perez said.
One of the city’s points cited in
the report was the mayor’s PRE-K
4 SA that’s tied to the educational
proposals outlined in SA2020.
“The more folks know how
educated our population is becoming, we are going to be more
successful in the aerospace economy,” Mayor Julian Castro said

In recent years safety at sporting events have been questioned
due to tragic events that have
occurred among many innocent
spectators.
Americans love their sports.
I mean, one of our favorite past
times is baseball, right? So why
do these events get put into the
shadows of tragic events like
stabbings, shootings, and even
bombings? Safety should be of
top mind in our violently changing world.
Ten year olds should not have
to be afraid to go to a stadium
and watch their favorite athlete.
And parents should not have to
tell their children, “Sorry kiddos, we can’t go because it’s
not safe if something happens.”
Everyone should feel safe and
know they are in good care by
stadium staff at athletic events.
Some stadiums go to the extreme to keep fans safe, but full
body scans and airport security
type checks are unnecessary.
Or is it? A majority of stadiums
have security checks that include standard magnetic wand
checks and look into bags. But,
the level of security checks vary
depending on the popularity of
an event.
In my personal experience,
when attending Silver Stars
games at the AT&T Center,
security had someone look into
your bag, then just simply walk
in. Whereas, when you go to a
Spurs game security looks into
your bag and perform wand
checks. They are two different
security experiences, for two of
the same type of athletic events;
they are just different in popularity. Just because one team or
sport is more popular than the
other they should have just as
much security as the other.
As fans, we want to be there
for those spectacular moments
in sports no matter the event,
but we also want to feel safe.

video coordinator for San Antonio. Hardy, who attended Williams College in Massachusetts,
began with the Spurs as a video
intern in 2011.
Falsone spent 10 seasons as
the strength and conditioning
coach for the Houston Rockets
from 1995-2005. He also served
as the personal strength coach for
Hakeem Olajuwon from 1993-95
and for Yao Ming from 2005-06.
While assisting Ming, Falsone
worked with the Chinese men’s
basketball team in preparations
for the 2004 Olympics in Athens,
Greece and for the 2006 FIBA
World Championship in Sapporo,
Japan.
Herring comes to the Spurs
after spending the past year in
Bermuda as the principal, strength
and conditioning coach and fascial stretch therapist for Rhino
Training. In the past year he has
also worked for the Peak Performance Project in Santa Barbara,
California, where he assisted with
strength and conditionings preparation for athletes prior to the
2013 NBA Draft.

Un viejo sueño

Es innegable que la ciudad de
San Antonio tiene muchas cua
lidades y virtudes aparte de ser
hermosa, tradicional y hospitalaria. Siempre se ha distinguido por
su gran calidad estética, histórica
y exquisita arquitectura. Basta
caminar y observar sus hermosas
y señoriales calles, su apacible y
refrescante río, sus monumentos,
edificios, museos, centros cívicos,
el Teatro Alameda (en reparación), parques y jardines, etc. Pero
principalmente la sonrisa amable
y hospitalaria de sus habitantes.
Conserva un gran respeto y
admiración hacia las bellas artes,
ya sea la danza, la pintura, el
teatro, la música, etc.
Sabemos también que, históricamente, ha sido el refugio y
asilo de muchos personajes
importantes de Latinoamérica y
que, en la calidez de su hospitalidad y lenguaje hispano, han
encontrado la paz, la tranquilidad y el calor humano de sus
habitantes.
Observando también los últimos años, estamos siendo
testigos de un nuevo y pujante
San Antonio debido, principalmente, al esfuerzo y al trabajo
de sus propios habitantes, así
como a los grandes y pequeños
capitales que han arribado con
motivo del gran éxodo de empresas y empresarios que huyen
de la inseguridad de sus propios
países, principalmente de su país
vecino: México.
Es innegable la gran inmi-
gración hispana que, por diversos motivos, ha escogido esta
noble ciudad de San Antonio
para realizar, como dice el alcalde de etsa ciudad don Julián
Castro, “El Nuevo Rostro del
Sueño Americano”. Ahí encontrarán con alegría y optimismo
su futuro y sus sueños; aportando su trabajo, su talento, sus
impuestos y su cultura.
No se puede ignorar también
el gran crecimiento de esta
comunidad hispana que, respetuosos del país que los acoge,
luchan día con día por defender
sus tradiciones culturales y su
identidad.
De esta forma, y entre otras empresas, ha surgido una incipiente
industria cinematográfica que
está conciente de las legítimas
aspiraciones de la inmensa población latina que desean ver
sus películas, en su idioma, en
sus costumbres y en su propia
cultura.
En este contexto, la compañía
productora Eagle Eye Studios
Inc. se ha abocado a producir
sus primeras películas: “Secuestrada” y “Patricia”, y en
preparación “90 días”.
No está por demás mencionar
que la temática principal de sus
películas es defender y promover
los valores humanos, la familia
y las buenas costumbres.
Existe también el deseo de
fomentar el teatro en español a
nivel regional con obras afines
a su idiosincrasia latina y mexicana.
Y surge la pregunta: ¿Existen
los suficientes actores de habla
hispana o bilingües en San
Antonio para satisfacer esta demanda? La respuesta es no. Se
tiene que recurrir a actores de
México, Los Ángeles o Miami
con sus correspondientes elevados gastos.
Es por ello que Juan Carlos
Hernández y Tatiana Smithhard,
socios y dueños de Eagle Eye
Studios Inc., se han lanzado, valientemente, a fundar un Instituto
de Arte Dramático en esta ciudad
de San Antonio que lleva por
nombre Eagle Eye Art Academy;
cubriendo, de esta forma, todo
el territorio del sur y centro de
los Estados Unidos Americanos.
Sobra decir que, como en cual
quier ciudad, existen muchos
jóvenes y adultos con inquietudes artísticas que desean estudiar la carrera de Arte Dramático, y Eagle Eye Art Academy, ha
recogido ese deseo.
En ella se imparten las diferentes disciplinas y especialidades
propias de esta profesión, empezando por las básicas: Actuación,
Expresión Corporal, Educación
de la Voz, Canto y Danza.
Es sano entender que el Arte
Dramático no solo es bueno para
crear nuevos actores y actrices,
sino que es bueno también para
muchísimas personas que necesitan expresarse públicamente, ya
sean conferencistas, abogados,
profesionistas, etc.

escuela y enseñar lo poco que

Starbucks, Howard Schultz, ha
pedido en una carta abierta a sus
clientes que no lleven armas a sus
establecimientos o sus terrazas.
"La presencia de un arma en
nuestros establecimientos es
inquietante y preocupante para
muchos de nuestros clientes",
señala la carta, divulgada en la
página de internet de la empresa
y que aparecerá mañana como
anuncio a toda página en algunos
periódicos de gran tirada, como
USA Today, Wall Street Journal
o New York Times.
En un país afectado por tiroteos indiscriminados de forma
periódica, Starbucks se ha convertido de forma involuntaria
en un campo de batalla entre los
partidarios de llevar armas en
público y quienes defienden un
control más estricto de la venta
y porte de armas.
Aunque la legislación varía
entre estados, muchos de los casi
7,000 establecimientos propiedad
de Starbucks se encuentran en
estados cuya legislación permite
portar armas en público, y algunos grupos han organizado eventos en cafeterías de la cadena.
En agosto pasado hubo un "Día
de Aprecio por Starbucks" organizado por las organizaciones a
favor de llevar armas. La empresa
cerró su cafetería de Newtown
(Connecticut), la ciudad donde en
diciembre pasado veinte niños y
seis adultos murieron en un tiroteo escolar, a fin de evitar acoger
ese evento.
"Los activistas a favor de las
armas han usado nuestros establecimientos como un escenario
político" para organizar eventos
que "de forma engañosa retratan
a Starbucks como un defensor"
de llevar armas en público, señala
Schultz en su carta, que también
aparecerá en forma de anuncio
en periódicos.
"Para ser claro, no queremos
estos acontecimientos en nuestros
establecimientos", recalca.
Muchos clientes han protestado a la dirección por la presencia de personas armadas en las
cafeterías.
Schultz aseguró, en varias entre
vistas que publican hoy algunos
diarios, que la decisión no tiene
nada que ver con el tiroteo de
Newtown ni con el de esta misma
semana en Washington DC.
Sin embargo, Starbucks no
prohibirá explícitamente portar
armas en público y sus trabajadores no pedirán a los clientes
que lleven armas que dejen el
local y tampoco habrá carteles
que señalen esta petición.

Fue un día especial para la
ciudad de Houston, Texas. No era
un día de nieve ni de ciclón. No
había campeonato de béisbol ni
concierto de la orquesta sinfónica.
Ese día, en un negocio de la
ciudad, se instalaría el cenicero
más grande del mundo.
En un receptáculo especial,
miles de hombres y mujeres
comenzaron a arrojar colillas
de cigarrillos. Era una manera
de protestar contra el abuso del
tabaco, y una forma de evidenciar
su propia decisión personal de no
volver a fumar.
Miles de colillas, hasta llegar a
pesar 300 kilogramos, llenaron el
cenicero más grande del planeta.
¡Qué buena la decisión de estos
habitantes de Houston!
Dejar de fumar, y dejarlo para
siempre, es una de las mejores
resoluciones que pueden hacerse,
ya sea en Año Nuevo o en mitad
de año, o en cualquier día del
calendario. Porque el humo del
tabaco es, en el mejor de los casos,
totalmente inútil, y en el peor de
los casos, nocivo tanto para el

had built, came crashing down
around me. I was alone in the
streets with a $200 a day habit
on my back.
On this road I was humping,
a man by the name of Pancho
Tristan spoke to me about Jesus
Christ. He spoke of how this man
was sent by God the Father, to die
on a cross as a sacrifice for the
sins of mankind. Of how I could
by the act of kneeling down and
asking God in the name of Jesus
Christ to save me from what I
was living in to forgive me of
all the sins.
Eventually, years later, that
is exactly what I did. Forty-one
years have gone by, and I live
both physically and mentally
and most importantly spiritu-

Cuentan que una vez el diablo
se disfrazó de universitario
y se puso a conversar con
un carbonero español.
Al preguntarle el diablo el
contenido de su fe, el carbonero
le respondió: “Yo creo todo lo
que cree la Iglesia”. El tentador
insistió: “¿Y qué es lo que cree
la Iglesia?”. Ante esto el buen
cristiano, ni tonto ni perezoso,
le contestó: “Ella cree todo lo
que creo yo”. Con esa respuesta,
comenta el filósofo Gonzalo
Soto Posada, el carbonero dejó
al diablo “con las patas lavadas.
De allí el refrán que dice: “Busco
“la fe del carbonero”.
Hay quienes piensan que es
imposible ejercer esa fe natural
y firme de la gente sencilla, es
decir, fe que no requiere pruebas
ni argumentos. Lo que pasan
por alto es que todos hacemos
uso de la fe más elemental en
nuestros quehaceres cotidianos,
y ni nos damos cuenta. Por
ejemplo, los choferes a
menudo se ven obligados a
conducir sus vehículos guiados
exclusivamente por uno o dos
espejos. Lo hacen en algunos
casos para dar marcha atrás,
y en otros para unirse a la
circulación de vehículos que
van en la misma dirección.
Debido a ciertos obstáculos, no
pueden depender de su vista de
modo directo, sino solo de lo
que les indica el espejo. En esas
circunstancias, ponen toda su
fe en la integridad del espejo.
Y cuanto más se acostumbran
a usarlo, más confían en él.
No es cuestión de que tengan
o no tengan fe, sino de su
disposición a usar la fe que
Dios les ha dado.
No hay duda de que la fe
en Dios funciona de la misma
manera. En la Biblia se define
esa fe como “la certeza de
lo que no se ve”. Por eso
es necesario confiar en la
integridad de Dios, que no
se ve, pero en quien vemos
reflejada nuestra naturaleza
como si fuera un espejo. ¿Acaso
no hemos sido creados a imagen
y semejanza suya? Cuanto más
nos acostumbramos a mirarnos
en ese Espejo Divino, más
confiamos en Él, que es íntegro
por naturaleza.
San Pablo da por sentado
que Dios nos ha dado a todos
una medida de fe. En vez de
pensar que es imposible ejercer
esa medida de fe, debemos
más bien reconocer que lo
que de veras es imposible es
agradar a Dios sin fe, “ya que
cualquiera que se acerca a Dios
tiene que creer que él existe
y que recompensa a quienes
lo buscan”. Más vale que
busquemos la fe del carbonero.
Solo así podremos buscar a
Dios y recibir la recompensa
del perdón de pecados en la
tierra y la vida eterna que lo
acompaña.

Should organized religion
lose its place in society?

There are several indicators
that organized religion is on
the decline, not just in Western
Europe, but also in the United
States.
Only 37 percent of Americans believe clergy contribute
significantly to society’s wellbeing, according to a new Pew
Research Center poll. Even
among regular church goers,
only about half, 52 percent, say
clergy contribute “a lot” to the
betterment of society.
Gallup and Pew polls provide
these other indicators:
• Two-thirds of Americans
say religion is losing its influence in our lives.
• Since the 1970s, Americans’
confidence in organized religion
has steadily decreased.
• As of 2012, the downward
trend hit an all-time low: only
44 percent of Americans have
“a great deal” of confidence in
organized religion.
“America is still the most de-
voutly religious first world country – other Pew polls indicate
that most teens and 20-somethings stillconsider themselves
‘spiritual,’ and roughly half of
U.S. adults are still faithful to a
religion,” says Wade Fransson,
a former minister in the Worldwide Church of God – a religion
eventually denounced as a cult
– and author of “The People of
the Sign,” (thepeopleofthesign.
com), a memoir recounting his
life with the church.
While Fransson has experienced firsthand the liabilities of
extremist elements in religion,
he says religion and spirituality still offer society important
benefits:
• Religion often drives innovation and progressive social
mores. Can anyone imagine
what the world might look like
today without the Gutenberg
printing press, the institution
of marriage or the very devout
pilgrims who helped pave the
way for what would become the
United States? Would there have
been another human-based insti-
tution to champion the Golden
Rule in quite the same way as
the world’s religions have done,
including Christianity, Judaism,
Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism,
Bahá’í Faith, Confucianism,
Sikhism, Taoism and others?
Our morals are fundamentally
rooted in the history of religion,
and throwing out religion would
truly be like throwing out the
baby with the bathwater, Fransson says.
• Faith groups are responsible
for much of the world’s charity
work. Here’s a quick glimpse of
just a few of the charities created
by religious groups: Salvation
Army, YMCA, St. Jude’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity International, International Prison
Ministry, Intercristo, World
Relief, Remuda, Christian Aid
USA/Canada … and the list
goes on. Across the country and
around the world millions of
faith groups contribute daily to
their communities, from feeding
the hungry to educating the poor.

“I call it ‘The Search’ – that
is, that urge we all share for
significance amid this vast and
mysterious universe,” Fransson
says. “I suspect there’s an element of truth – another piece to
the puzzle – dwelling within

On August 30, 2013, AEP Texas Central Company (TCC) and AEP Texas North
Company (TNC) (jointly, the Companies) filed an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (Commission) to extend their Distribution Voltage Facilities Rental Tariffs
an additional three years, to January 1, 2017. The Companies do not propose to change the
terms of the tariffs or the current pricing in this docket. Sections 14.001, 39.001 and 39.051
of the Public Utility Regulatory Act and Sections 25.341 through 25.343 of the Commission’s
Substantive Rules provide for the Commission to authorize a utility to petition to provide
Facilities Rental Services if such services are not widely available to customers in an area.
TCC and TNC received Commission approval to provide such services until January 1, 2014
in Docket No. 38618. The Distribution Voltage Facilities Rental Services are contained in
Section 6.1.2.3.6 of the Companies’ Tariffs for Retail Delivery Service.
The Companies have proposed an effective date of January 1, 2014, at which time
the proposed tariffs will be deemed approved if no objection is filed with the Commission.
Only customers currently taking service under the existing tariffs, as well as the Retail Electric Providers servicing those customers, are affected by this application. Those affected customers take delivery service under Distribution Service Schedule 6.1.1.1.4 Primary Voltage
Service, and are located throughout the service areas of TCC and TNC. This filing has been
assigned PUC Docket No. 41799.
The deadline for filing a motion to intervene in this proceeding is October 15, 2013.

Trilling is introducing a new concept seldom seen in the restaurant
industry in San Antonio. The idea
is to introduce and feature new
cuisine from a particular region of
Latin America every six weeks.
The décor of the restaurant, cuisine,
and drink menu vary depending
on the country. It’s a culinary tour
worth trying.
The current region NAO has
focused on is Oaxaca, Mexico.
Mexican cuisine is known for its
staple goods: corn, chilies, and
beans. However, there is a vast array of preparations and ingredients
that differ throughout the regions.
Oaxaca is known for its cheese,
mole, and chocolate. Being a
coastal state also guarantees plenty
of seafood.
The menu prepared has many
special plates, but one that particularly stood out was the Albondigas en Salsa. The meatballs
were braised with a delectable
smoky chipotle tomato salsa, and
garnished with parsley. The tenderness of the meatballs melted in
my mouth.
Another noteworthy dish was the
Ceviche Costeño, which is prepared
with shrimp, mango, coconut, and
costeño chilies: a pepper found exclusively in Mexico. The spiciness
of the peppers contrasted nicely
with the sweetness of the mango.
The cocktail menu includes Mezcaltini (Mezcal), Montejo Beer and
an Oaxacan pineapple based beer
called Tepache. The featured cocktail is called a Paloma: a mixture of
tequila, grapefruit and lime.
For $39, you can have a three
course meal, or you may try each
creation a la carte.
Oaxacan food will only be featured until October, so if you
want to explore another aspect of
Mexican food, this is a great place
to consider.

Bill Hader back again as Flint in “Cloudy 2”

When Bill Hader became an actor he forgot to factor in one thing,
the time he’d have to spend away
from his family.
In La Prensa’s conversation with
Hader on his latest role as Flint in
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” the former Saturday Night
Live cast member talked about
the importance of family. Like his
character, Flint, family and friends
are most important.
“When I became an actor, and
started getting paid as an actor, I
felt this great privilege,” Hader
said. “The thing I wasn’t counting
on was the amount of time away
from my family.”
“My wife and I got, then like
a week later I shot a movie in
Vancouver for four months,” he
recalled. “It was terrible.”
Now a days, Hader had found
balance though and practice what
he calls “the two week” rule. He
and his wife agreed they can’t go
more than two weeks without seeing one another.
“I’ve also been lucky,” he said.

During his time on SNL he was
able to stay in one place for at least
nine months during the season.
Now, however, that is changing, as
he is no longer part of the cast and
has started pursuing more movie
roles. Oh, and let’s not forget his
T-Mobile commercials.
“Cloudy 2” is Hader’s latest
project set to hit theaters Sept.
29. He’s back as Flint, the quirky
inventor who almost destroys his
hometown of Swallow Falls in the
first “Cloudy.” Hader and Flint
are similar in that they’re both tall,
lanky individuals with big hearts
and are all about family and friends.
“Flint is that guy who has good
intentions – great intentions – but
everything always goes wrong,”
Hader said. “On the other hand,
he’s very driven and very confident, even when everybody else
thinks he’s crazy. Actually, I feel
a kinship with him – we’re both
nerdy, nervous, and not great with
girls.”
In “Cloudy 2” we pick were we
left off in part one, after Flint saves
Swallow Falls from giant food
storm oblivion caused by Flint’s
own invention, the FLDSMDFR,
which, now is causing a whole new
problem.
Hader is spectacular once again
as Flint along with the cast of characters from the first film that make
up his core group of friends.
The film also introduces 39 different foodimals from shrimpanzees to watermelophants.
Have no fear, they are only fictional, but if one of the foodimals
were to come to life Hader’s biggest fear would be the tacodiles,
which are part crunchy taco, part
jalapeño.
“I love tacos, so I think I’d be in
trouble,” Hader said.

Playing solo acoustic guitar and
harmonica and singing mostly in
Spanish, the American singersongwriter performed his version
of the song he said he discovered
thanks to the “wonderful” Mercedes Sosa, the late Argentine folk
singer who recorded a memorable
cover of that same tune.

Buenos Aires for the Amnesty
International tour. My memories
of that time are very vivid. We
came when the country was going
through a difficult moment and

El valor de lo perdido

Hace poco fui con un grupo de
amigos a una excursión de snorkelling (buceo con tubo) en Cayo
Largo. Y justo antes de abordar
la lancha que nos llevaría a uno
de los arrecifes más hermosos
de la Florida, pasamos un “mal
rato”. Cada uno estaba pagando
el alquiler de aletas y máscara,
cuando mi amiga Wanda gritó:
“¡Se me perdió mi cartera!”. Y
de inmediato salió corriendo al
baño donde habíamos estado
minutos antes.
Wanda buscó y buscó, pero no
encontró su billetera, y la preocupación de tener que cancelar sus
tarjetas de crédito y solicitar una
nueva licencia para conducir no
le permitió disfrutar de la belleza
marina.
¿Qué fue lo último que extraviaste? Tal vez tu billetera o una joya.
Si tenía mucho valor monetario o
sentimental, seguramente sentiste
desespero o hasta lloraste. Así
como perdemos objetos, también
hemos encontrado algo que no es
nuestro. En ese momento cada
cual actúa diferente. Algunos
dicen: ¡Gracias Diosito, qué
suerte tengo! Otros exclaman:
¡Pobrecito del que perdió esto!”,
y muchos alegan: “Si no lo agarro
yo, otro lo agarra”.
Mi filosofía respecto a lo “perdido y encontrado” es: no hagas lo
que no quieres que te hagan. Sería
tentador quedarse con algo que
aparenta no pertenecer a nadie,
pero ¡tiene dueño! Quedarte con
eso es como robar.
La próxima vez que te encuentres algo y te dé la tentación de
quedártelo, recuerda la angustia
que sentiste cuando perdiste algo
valioso. Reconoce que si te lo embolsicas, ahora tú vas a causarle
esa angustia a otro.
Siempre que encuentres algo,
ve a la oficina de artículos extraviados, si no hay una, devuélvelo
en la recepción. Cuando sea un
artículo delicado, como una joya,
y te preocupa que no se lo entreguen a la persona, entonces deja
tus datos para cuando el dueño
aparezca se comunique contigo.
En Cayo Hueso comprobé una
vez más que “cosechas lo que
siembras”. Cuando regresamos a
tierra, mi amiga Wanda regresó a
la tienda de alquiler y le entregaron su cartera. Ella cerró sus ojos
y exclamó: “¡Dios bendiga al que
la encontró y la devolvió!”.

of the late Mexican-American
singer Jenni Rivera are working
to preserve the legacy of the socalled “diva of the band.”
In an interview with Efe, her
younger sister Rosie Rivera described
the plans and projects the family
has been developing to preserve
the memory of the diva, who
died last December in a plane
crash in northern Mexico.
Speaking of “Unbreakable: My
Story, My Way,” the autobiography of the singer, Rosie said that
“the book, thank God, is doing
very well. The publisher told me
it has broken all records for a
Latino writer. It has also been a
New York Times Best Seller and
that was also our goal.”
The book, which went on sale
July 2, the same day its author
would have been 44, was No. 1
on Amazon for several weeks.
As for the movie that has been
announced about the life of the
artist, Rosie, who is executive
director of Jenni Rivera Enterprises and responsible for
managing her sister’s estate, said
the family “has been very clear
with them.”
“It’s not something we authorized. We know it won’t have the
true essence of Jenni,” she said.
“We as a family and as a company are working on the official
film,” she said, adding that they
have already lined up a “great
Hollywood writer” who has won
an Oscar and big prizes for his
movies,” to write the screenplay
for the film, though they still do
not wish to reveal his name.

“Salinger” reveals fresh
details about recluse author

J.D. Salinger is, arguably, the
most polarizing author of the 20th
century. Salinger, made famous by
his classic novel “The Catcher in the
Rye,” has puzzled fans and his peers
alike after never writing another
book after his first that has sold over
70 million copies.
Director Shane Salerno takes on
the challenge of telling the story
on this iconic author in “Salinger,”
which came out in theaters Friday.
Overall, it is a compelling look into
Salinger’s world and his issues with
the women in his life, among others.
Salerno’s goal in this film was to
uncover fresh, accurate details on
the man who became a recluse in
the mid-1970s. It took Salerno nine
years to produce the film.
The content is there in “Salinger”
and it is grossly intriguing to learn
about Salinger’s time during World
War II and the horror he witnessed,
his doomed relationships he had
with women, and how meticulous
he was with his work.
Where the film falls short, however, is by way of the editing and
order of the story. The editing feels
sloppy and jumps back-and-forth
through Salinger’s life. At one point
the story is about his time at war,
and then it skips to another one of
his relationships. It makes it hard
to keep track of where you’re at in
Salinger’s life.
Throughout the documentary
many of Salinger’s former colleagues, editors and friends weigh
in on Salinger as a man giving their
own perspectives — some good,
some bad. Hearing from all the people close to Salinger, they begin to

paint a picture of a man who wasn’t
very nice and put his work ahead of
all – friendships, love and life.
I couldn’t help but to leave the
film with a different perception of
Salinger. From what I knew prior,
I liked Salinger. Now, however,
I view him in a different light, a
more negative light. Salinger was a
tortured soul, but a genius during his
time. He defied storytelling before
becoming a recluse like billionaire
aviation pioneer Howard Hughes
and Pink Floyd lead singer Syd
Barrett.
The best and most revealing part
of the film is when Salerno divulges
that Salinger wrote every day since
being last published. Salinger, who
passed away in 2010, will have
various unseen works published
between 2015 and 2020, of which
includes the background and history

“Cheap Thrills,” a film that
won the Audience Award for
Midnighters at SXSW, poses
those questions to two men
down on their luck.
Craig (Pat Healy) is an average guy trying to dig him and
his family out of financial debt
and pending eviction from their
home.
When Craig loses his job and
plunges further into trouble he
decides to stop in at a bar to
drown his sorrows.
While sorting out how he
is going to tell his wife he no
longer was employed, he runs
into Vince (Ethan Embry) an
old friend from high school.
While catching up on how
both their lives didn’t turn out
as they planned, they are joined
by Colin (David Koechner) and
Violet (Sara Paxton), a bored
wealthy couple that are out
celebrating Violet’s birthday.
Colin has money to burn. He
starts making small bets that
pit Craig and Vince against
each other.
What starts as a small, $50
bet to finish a shot of booze
ends up turning into a night of
solutions to debt problems and
internal struggles against what
is right and what is wrong.
“Cheap Thrills” does a great
job of building its two main
characters enough to feel for
them and are cast perfectly.
David Koechner who has a
career in acting that is based
solely on comedy, comes out
swinging in a role that pulls
from the tragedy in comedy.
His character is a methodical dimwit. He is a complete
contradiction of himself and in
a parallel universe would have
made a fine Bond villain.
“Cheap Thrills” is a wellexecuted story that delivers a
lot more than cheap thrills; it’s
a slow boil thriller that puts
the focus on money and how
far someone would go to get it.

“Four” provokes serious thought

The movie “Four” is interesting. It is a film that makes you
think. The story is clear, but the
message you’ll have to search
for within yourself.
The story is simple, based
on Christopher Shinn’s play
“Four,” it’s about four people
and their relationships with each
other. Abigayle (Aja Naomi
King) and Dexter (E.J. Bonilla)
make up one-half of the four
and the other half is Joe (Wendell Pierce) and June (Emory
Cohen).
Abigayle and Dexter are
young and have the world in
front of them to conquer. Their
relationship is interesting because Abigayle underestimates
Dexter’s wit and brains. He
comes off as your average street
thug who is clinging to the days
when he was the beloved neigh-
borhood basketball star. However, Dexter is far from it, he’s
actually quite intelligent. He
displays an intellect beyond his
years and is keen to Abigayle’s
real feeling towards him.
Abigayle and Dexter’s relationship is symbolic, like many
things in the film. Abigayle is
black and comes from the middle
class. She struggles with, what
seems to be, her place in life
and the world and her purpose.
While Dexter, the opposite, is
Latino and poor, but he knows
his place in the world and is
content.
The other relationship “Four”
follows is of Joe and June. Joe,
the father of Abigayle, lies to
her and says he’s out of town.
However, Joe is really on a date
with June, a young white kid he
met online. With his ailing wife
at home, Joe looks to satisfy
his homosexual tendencies and
rents a motel room. Joe and June
settle in at the motel after driving around town and a sexual
encounter ensues.
“Four” gets under your skin
and provokes serious thought.
You begin to ask questions and
develop strong feelings toward
the characters — good and bad.
Like Joe, who is cheating on his
wife with June while lying to
his daughter. Or, Abigayle who
thinks she is better than Dexter
because he comes from lesser
means. Dexter, however, who I
like takes the high road and sees
right past her false outlook.
Director Joshua Sanchez, displays a brilliance in terms of
cinematography. The close-up
shots on the actor’s faces as they
question their inner thoughts,
long exchanges fueled by intense
dialogue and the many low-light
scenes set the film’s mood and
show of Sanchez’s technical side.
The acting is fantastic. Many
times in a lower budget film
such as this, the acting falls short
but in “Four” it is the best part.
They’re each convincing in their
own ways and mannerisms without overplaying the characters.
“Four” is out in theaters in
select cities.

Estoy muy deprimida porque

siente lo mismo que cuando
teníamos 20 años. Dice que
siente que le falta vivir y que
como es mucho menor que
yo, cree que se ha perdido de
muchas cosas en esos dos años
de diferencia. Me dijo que a él
le gustaría casarse hasta los 29 o
30 años y que no está seguro de
querer casarse en enero, mes en
que teníamos planeada la boda.
Ahora que me dijo eso me tiene
en depresión porque yo ya tenía
todo organizado para casarme, y
además es el único novio que he
tenido en toda mi vida.
Me siento triste, desconsolada
y engañada. Y lo peor de esto es
que sé que él está muy tranquilo
y contento con esto, porque me
han dicho sus amigos y amigas y
además porque no me ha vuelto
a buscar desde hace dos semanas.
Estoy como loca no sé qué
hacer. No quiero ni salir de mi
cuarto, no quiero trabajar y no
quiero hacer nada, no sé cómo
manejar esta situación. Dime por
favor, querida Nina, si debería
buscarlo o mejor dejarlo así por
la paz.
Querida novia afligida:
Lamento mucho esta decepción que te han causado, y entiendo perfecto tu desilusión y tu
tristeza porque yo creo que todos
en algún momento la hemos
pasado.
Por un lado, creo que fue muy
poco hombre tu prometido al
haberse esperado hasta meses
antes de la boda para decirte
semejantes palabras. Pero si te
pones a pensar, al mismo tiempo
fue maduro y pensó en ti y en él.
Imagínate si te hubieras casado, y después de unos meses se
hubiera dado cuenta de que ya no
te quería tanto. Yo creo que eso
hubiera sido mucho más doloroso
para ti, ya que hubiera ido de por
medio un divorcio.
No sabemos qué sea exactamente lo que pasa por su cabeza
en este momento, pero lo que sí
puedo garantizarte es que si es
para ti va a estar ahí y a tiempo,
y si no es entonces nunca fue
y en lugar de perder tu tiempo,
dedícate a buscar ayuda para recuperarte pronto y darle un giro
de 360 grados a tu vida.
No eres la primera ni la última
mujer que pasa por esta situación,
y si te sirve de consuelo, no estás
sola. Te aseguro que mucha gente
estará al pendiente de ti y cuando
menos te lo esperes, te sentirás
tranquila y volverás a la normalidad, sea cual sea la conclusión de
esta situación.
