Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary:
S
ometimes it’s good to be reminded of things we already know. We all know
the Ten Commandments (hopefully!) but we need to be constantly reminded
of them so that we put them into practice in our daily lives. The chief duty of Israel, the chosen people—was to listen to the Word of God and remember it, so they
would remain faithful to the one true God as they wandered through the desert
amongst pagan peoples with their many false gods. The Church, the New Israel,
remembers this lesson as well, as we traverse our modern, pagan desert replete
with strange gods of our own.
he first thing to remember is the most basic and the most important—the First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me.”
Of course, this means that there is only one true God. We are to love God with our whole being—heart, mind and strength. That is, we are to love God with our will and ability to choose
the good, with our intellectual capability of learning and studying, as well as with all our physical energies, offering “our bodies as a spiritual sacrifice acceptable to the Lord.” God comes
first, every thing and every one else second. No one (person) and nothing (no material thing)
should ever take first place in our lives. God loved us into existence, has created and providentially provided a whole world for us to live in, has given us New Life in His Son, as well as the
possibility of eternal bliss. We owe God all our love. This must be stated because it is so easy
for us to forget this most basic fact—we owe God our loving worship. The problem for us creatures is that God’s creation is so beautiful and at times so attractive that we risk mistaking creatures for the Creator, loving the gifts themselves more than the Giver. Placing the creature before the Creator is idolatry.

modern people worship many “strange” gods without realizing it. Nowadays, people worship wealth, power, pleasures, sex, drugs, sports figures, celebrities, entertainment, themselves, their children, their pets, their country or even their spouse. As our Lord said, “Where
your treasure is, there your heart will be.” (Luke 12:34). A certain balance is needed
here. God’s creations are for our benefit. They are good and beautiful only if used wisely for
their proper purpose. As Christians we constantly need to remember that we are in the world
but not of the world.

Queridas Familias y Amigos de Sta. Margarita Maria:
veces es bueno que se nos recuerde cosas que ya sabemos. Todos
sabemos de los Diez Mandamientos (¡ojalá!), pero tenemos que
recordar constantemente de ellos para que los pongamos en práctica
en nuestra vida diaria. El deber principal de Israel, el pueblo elegido—
fue escuchar la Palabra de Dios y recordar que, por lo que se mantendría fiel al único Dios verdadero, ya que vagaron por el desierto entre
los pueblos paganos, con sus muchos dioses falsos. La Iglesia, el Nuevo Israel, recuerda esta lección así, a medida que atravesamos nuestro moderno,
desierto pagano repleto de extraños dioses propios.

a primera cosa a recordar es la más básica y la más importante—el primer mandamiento: “Yo soy el Señor tu Dios, no tendrás dioses ajenos delante de
mí” Por supuesto, esto significa que hay un solo Dios verdadero. Hemos de amar a Dios
con todo nuestro ser—corazón, mente y fuerza. Es decir, hemos de amar a Dios con
nuestra voluntad y capacidad de elegir el bien , con nuestra capacidad intelectual de
aprender y estudiar, así como con todas nuestras energías físicas , ofreciendo “nuestros
cuerpos como un sacrificio espiritual agradable al Señor.” Dios viene primero , cada cosa y cada una segunda persona. Nadie (persona) y nada (ninguna cosa material) deben
tomar siempre el primer lugar en nuestras vidas. Dios nos amó a la existencia, ha creado y providencialmente proporcionado todo un mundo para nosotros vivimos, nos ha
dado nueva vida en su Hijo, así como la posibilidad de la felicidad eterna. Se lo debemos
a Dios todo nuestro amor. Esto debe establecerse , porque es muy fácil que nos olvidemos de este hecho más básico—se lo debemos a Dios nuestra adoración amorosa. El
problema para nosotros los seres es que la creación de Dios es tan hermoso ya veces tan
atractivo que nos arriesgamos a criaturas confundiéndolo con el Creador, amando los
propios dones más que el Dador. La colocación de la criatura ante el Creador es idolatría.

tras religiones adoran conscientemente ídolos , dioses ajenos que parecen
“extraño” para nosotros, pero la gente moderna adoran muchos dioses
“extraños” sin darse cuenta. Hoy en día, la gente adora la riqueza, el poder, los
placeres, el sexo, las drogas, figuras del deporte, celebridades, entretenimiento,
ellos mismos, sus hijos, sus mascotas, su país o incluso su cónyuge. Como dijo
nuestro Señor: “Donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará vuestro corazón.” (Lucas 12:34). Se necesita un cierto equilibrio aquí. Las creaciones de Dios
son para nuestro beneficio. Son buenos y hermoso sólo si utiliza sabiamente desvíe de sus objetivos. Como cristianos necesitamos constantemente para recordar
que estamos en el mundo pero no ser del mundo.

tros delitos contra el primer mandamiento son supersticiones, el uso de los
horóscopos, las cartas del tarot, y cualquier tipo de adivinación, psíquicos
consultoría y la brujería (vudú, santería, etc.) El movimiento de la Nueva Era que
se centra en el culto a uno mismo es explícitamente contrario a este mandamiento. Dios quiere que le amemos solo.

Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium
The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium, was the first document
to be promulgated by the Second Ecumenical Council, Vatican II. By the time it was approved by a consensus of attending bishops Pope John XXIII had died and Pope Paul VI
had succeeded him. Only 4 of the 2151 bishops attending this session voted against the acceptance of this document, which would supersede all previous documents and directives
issued by the Vatican regarding Sacred Liturgy.
Chapter 1 of this important document lays down the general principles for the restoration
and promotion of the Sacred Liturgy. The first section of this chapter is entitled The Nature
of the Sacred Liturgy and Its Importance in the Church’s Life and begins with a description
of the rootedness of liturgy in Christ, his passion, death and resurrection. From the time of
Pentecost the “church has never failed to come together to celebrate the paschal mystery”,
reading scriptures, celebrating the Eucharist, and giving thanks for the gift (Paragraphs 5 –6).

Why should I be anointed? The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick continues the
healing ministry of Jesus by helping those who are in need of spiritual, emotional or physical healing experience the presence of Christ. The sacrament grants the grace of comfort,
peace and courage, to face sickness and resist being tempted by discouragement and despair.
Is there a difference between being healed and being cured? Yes. A healing
takes place on the spiritual level. A healing might include the strength to face what lies
ahead and the grace to accept God's will for our lives. A cure speaks of the physical aspects,
and sometimes, through this sacrament, people are not only healed, they also are cured.
Who should be anointed? Anyone who: Has a serious or chronic illness. Is facing surgery. Is suffering from the debilitating effects of old age.
When should anointing take place? As soon as one becomes seriously ill. If surgery
is elective or planned, before being admitted for the surgery. Before the sick person is unconscious, comatose or in the last stages of death. Whenever a new condition or surgery
arises or the current condition significantly worsens.
What takes place during the anointing? The priest lays hands on the one who is ill
and prays over him or her. The priest will also anoint the sick person with oil, the ancient
symbol for strength and healing.
How can I arrange to be anointed? Anointing is available each weekday morning immediately following the 6:30 and 8:15 Mass. Arrange this by speaking with the priest before
Mass. For those who cannot attend Mass, special arrangements can be made by contacting

LAS ACTITUDES DEL DISCIPULO
Por Humberto Beltrán.
Mateo es un educador cristiano que intenta en su
evangelio como se puede ser discípulo de Jesús en
una comunidad de hermanos con un solo Padre y
un solo Maestro (Cristo Jesús), desde la perspectiva
del reino de la justicia. Después de las bienaventuranzas desgrana seis antítesis sobre el homicidio, el
adulterio, el divorcio, los falsos juramentos, la ley
del Talión y el amor a los enemigos.
Entre los cristianos a los que se dirigía el evangelio de Mateo, estaba muy vivo el debate entre tendencias opuestas: había algunos que sostenían que
Jesús había venido como liberador de la ley de
Moisés; otros afirmaban que su tarea había sido
suscribir, apoyar, hasta en sus mínimos detalles todo lo que ahí estaba escrito.
Libertad para cumplir los Mandamientos
En el Eclesiástico, por inspiración de Dios, se nos
habla de la liberación que tenemos para cumplir o
no los mandamientos. Por medio de diversas comparaciones nos habla de que podemos elegir el bien
o el mal. No obstante, todo cae bajo la poderosa
mirada de Dios. Somos libres y responsables. Dios
nos ama, nos inspira lo que debemos hacer, nos
ayuda y anima a seguir sus enseñanzas, a cumplir
su voluntad, pero la decisión es nuestra. Dios no
quiere una obediencia ciega por nuestra parte: quiere un diálogo amistoso en el que El se da a nosotros
y nosotros a El. Pero con frecuencia este diálogo se
rompe, no por parte de Dios, sino por nuestra culpa.
Lo que Dios quiere de nosotros es que caminemos
libres, pero en conformidad con su voluntad.
El evangelio nos dice que la ley de Dios tiene cumplimiento y su perfección en Cristo. Y Cristo no
vino a suprimir la ley. Vino a completarla, a darle
mayor perfección. No vino a hacer la ley de Dios
más fácil, sino que, cumpliéndola El, nos enseñó
cómo también nosotros debemos llevarla a la práctica. A partir de Cristo, y según nos dice el evangelio de hoy, se nos pide algo más que no matar, algo
más que no cometer adulterio. Cristo puntualiza
con detalles algunos mandamientos, que en el Antiguo Testamento quedaban indicados de una manera
general. Se desentiende de algunas prescripciones
inventadas por los judíos y da más importancia al
espíritu de la ley que a la letra.
Perdonemos a quienes nos ofenden
Varios temas nos presentan las lecturas de hoy,
pero vamos a fijarnos en uno: la reconciliación, la
amistad, el perdón de las ofensas a los demás. El ser
humano está hecho para vivir en sociedad, en relación con los demás. No ha sido creado para vivir
solitario. Y está vida de sociedad, de relación, es
difícil. Con facilidad chocamos con los demás, tenemos fricciones con los vecinos, con los compañeros de trabajo, con los familiares. Y a veces no
enemistamos, tenemos rencor a ciertas personas, no
sabemos o no queremos perdonar. Y aquí tiene sentido y aplicación una parte del texto evangélico de
hoy.
Reflexión
Nuestro corazón católico debe estar
abierto a todos, no debe excluir a nadie. Debemos tratar de no ofender
nunca a nadie y debemos estar dispuestos a perdonar a quienes nos han
ofendido. El amor, fundamento del
cristianismo, excluye automáticamente el odio a cualquier persona. Cristo
da más importancia al perdón de las
ofensas y al amor que a la misma
ofrenda y a cualquier otro tipo de sacrificio que podamos hacer. Jesús dijo: “Si al presentar tu ofrenda te das
cuenta de que tu hermano tiene algo
contra ti, deja la ofrenda y vete primero a reconciliarte con tu hermano”.

La Constitución sobre la Sagrada Liturgia: Sacrosanctum Concilium , fue el primer documento
que se promulgó por el Concilio Ecuménico Vaticano II. En el momento en que fue aprobado por
consenso de asistir a los obispos el Papa Juan XXIII había muerto y el Papa Pablo VI lo había
logrado . Sólo 4 de los 2.151 obispos que asistieron a esta sesión votaron en contra de la aceptación de este documento, que sustituirá a todos los documentos anteriores y las directrices
emitidas por el Vaticano con respecto a la Sagrada Liturgia .
Capítulo 1 de este importante documento establece los principios generales para la restauración

¿Por qué debo ser ungido? El sacramento de la Unción de los enfermos continúa el ministerio
sanador de Jesús por ayudar a aquellos que están en necesidad de la experiencia espiritual , emocional o física de curación de la presencia de Cristo. El sacramento confiere la gracia de consuelo,
paz y valentía, para hacer frente a la enfermedad y resistirse a ser tentado por el desánimo y la desesperación.
¿Existe una diferencia entre estar sano y ser curado? Sí. Una curación se lleva a cabo en
el nivel espiritual . Una curación podría incluir la fuerza para enfrentar lo que se avecina y la gracia para aceptar la voluntad de Dios para nuestras vidas. Una cura habla de los aspectos físicos , y,
a veces , a través de este sacramento , la gente no sólo sanó , sino que también se curan .
¿Quién debe ser ungido? Cualquier persona que: Tiene una enfermedad grave o crónica. Se
enfrenta a la cirugía. Está sufriendo de los efectos debilitantes de la vejez.
¿Cuando debe tener lugar la unción? Tan pronto como uno se convierte en gravemente enfermo. Si la cirugía es electiva o planeado, antes de ser admitidos para la cirugía. Antes de que el
enfermo está inconsciente, en coma o en las últimas etapas de la muerte . Cada vez que un nuevo
Estado o la cirugía que se deba o la condición actual empeora significativamente .
¿Qué ocurre durante la unción? El sacerdote impone las manos sobre la persona que está
enferma y reza por él o ella. El sacerdote también ungir al enfermo con aceite, el antiguo símbolo
para la fuerza y la curación.
¿Cómo puedo arreglar para ser ungido? La unción está disponible todas las mañanas inmediatamente después de la 6:30 y las 8:15 Misa arreglar esto hablando con el sacerdote antes de
la Misa para los que no puedan asistir a la misa , los arreglos especiales se pueden hacer poniéndose en contacto con la oficina parroquial al (310 ) 326 -3364 .

Emmanuel is a seminarian at St. John’s Seminary
and a St. Margaret Mary parishioner.
“As a human race, we believe that we have come a long
way in terms of equality. However, when we look
around us, it seems that we still have much to learn.
One would have expected Christianity to have already
brought Jesus’ message of equality into its communities, yet within Jesus' own church, this is a far cry from
the truth regarding women. Some of us use Scripture to
put down women and foreigners as well. But merely
reading the Bible is not enough and could be wrong. I
will tell you how to dig deep into Scripture and by doing
so actually find words to support liberation instead of
subjugation: not just of women, but of all people.”

Are You Ready to Dive-In?
Dive-In is a multi-South Bay parish adult
and young adult faith formation program.
24 speakers will present on a wide variety
of topics at 12 different parishes
March 10th to 13th and 17th to 20th.
It starts with a concert with
Sarah Hart on Sunday, March 9th.
Each course costs $5 and can be paid for
at the door. A Series Pass will be only
$25. Each paid participant can bring
a friend for free.
