Faced with the Church’s or my own slow growth and
constant need for renewal, what can I do practically
this week to take Paul’s advice and “be courageous”?
Consider taking time this week to prepare for next
Sunday’s Mass by reading the Sunday readings:
Jb 38:1,8-11; 2 Cor 5:14-17; Mk 4:35-41.
So many problems are testing families. One of these trials is
poverty. Let us think of the many families that live on the
outskirts of major cities, as well as those in rural areas.... So much
misery, so much degradation! And then, to make the situation
worse, in some places there is also war. War is always a terrible
thing. Moreover, it also strikes above all the civil populations, the families. Truly,
war is the “mother of all poverty”, war impoverishes the family, a great predator
of lives, souls and of the most sacred and beloved bonds.
Despite all this, there are many poor families who try to live their daily lives with
dignity, often openly entrusting themselves to God’s blessing. This lesson,
however, should not justify our indifference, but rather increase our shame over
the fact that there is so much poverty! It is almost a miracle that, even in poverty,
the family continues to form, and even preserve — as much as it can — the
special humanity of those bonds. This fact irritates those planners of wellbeing
who consider attachments, procreation and familial bonds as secondary variables
to the quality of life. They don’t understand a thing! On the contrary, we should
kneel down before these families, who are a true school of humanity in saving
societies from barbarity.
What do we have left if we yield to the extortion of Caesar and Mammon, to
violence and to money, and renounce even family ties? A new civil ethic will
arrive only when the leaders of public life reorganize the social bond beginning
with the perverse struggle that spirals between the family and poverty, which
leads us into the abyss.
The prevailing economy is often concentrated on the enjoyment of individual
wellbeing, but it largely exploits family ties. This is a serious contradiction! The
boundless work of the family is not quoted in financial statements, obviously!
Indeed economics and politics are misers in regards to acknowledging this. Yet,
the interior formation of the person and the social flow of affections have their
mainstay precisely there. Should it be removed, everything would fall apart.
It is not merely a question of bread. We are talking about work, talking about
education, talking about health. It is important that this be clearly understood. We
are always quite moved when we see images of sick and malnourished children
that are shown in so many parts of the world. At the same time, we are also
deeply moved by the twinkle in the eyes of many children, deprived of everything
and in schools built from nothing, who are proud when showing off their pencil
and their notebook. And how lovingly they look at their teacher! Children already
know that man does not live on bread alone! And as for family affection; when
there is destitution children suffer because they want love, family ties.
We Christians have to be ever closer to the families whom poverty puts to the
test. But think, all of you know someone: a father without work, a mother without
work ... and this makes the family suffer, the bonds are weakened. This is terrible.
Indeed, social destitution strikes the family and sometimes destroys it. The lack,
loss or strong instability of employment weigh heavily upon family life, imposing
a substantial strain on relationships. Living conditions in the poorest
neighborhoods, with housing and transportation problems, as well as reduced
social, health and educational services, bring about further difficulties. Adding to
these material factors is the damage caused to the family by the pseudo-models
spread by the mass media on the basis of consumerism and the cult of
appearances, which influence the poorest social classes and increase the
breakdown of family ties. Take care of families, attend to the attachment, when
destitution puts the family to the test!

Labels for Education
Check your pantries, freezers, and kitchen
cabinets for any Campbell's or Pepperidge Farm
products! Cut out and send in the entire UPC
codes from these products. Labels for Education
has a great bonus out right now and we'll get "top
dollar" for these labels. They translate into great
items for our Religious Education department, including cash!
Campbell's labels are easy to find. Pepperidge Farm products
include Goldfish crackers, loaf bread, croutons, and frozen cakes,
pastries and breads. Please turn in Labels for Education in the
collection tub in the entryway of the church as soon as possible.
Our deadline for this bonus opportunity is Sunday, July 12.
VBS “EVEREST” Scheduled for June 22-26th!
Mark your calendars for our annual VBS
entitled "Everest: Conquering Challenges
with God's Mighty Power". Children that
have completed Kindergarten through 5th
grade are invited to embark on the coolest
adventure of summer! VBS is filled with
incredible Bible-learning experiences that
kids will see, hear, touch and even taste!. There will be science
experiments, team building games, cool Bible songs and tasty
treats. Kids will discover how to see evidence of God in everyday
life! The fun begins daily at 9 a.m. and will last until noon. A
donation of $15 per child is suggested.. Contact Norma

Everest VBS Needs Your Help!! There are a few VBS Donation
Tags left on the board at the entrances of the parish. If you would
like to donate a supply item for VBS, take one and then please

Ushers and Greeters
Several Greeters/Ushers are needed for
Sundays at 8:00/8:30 and 10:30/11:00 Mass.
If you're going to be there anyway, please
consider sharing your time and talents. With
enough volunteers, it only amounts to about
four Sundays per quarter. Ushers are required to arrive at Mass
at least 15 minutes before the start and stay until everyone
leaves, greet, seat (when necessary), and take up the collection.
Third quarter schedules will be going out soon, so please contact

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena
Every Wednesday at 11:30 AM a group will be
praying a perpetual novena to Our Lady of
Perpetual Help before Mass. All are welcome to
come and pray with us or to write down any
requests you or a loved one and put them in the
prayer jar on the back table to be included in the novena.
Greeting Cards to Nursing Homes
Many residents never receive any visitors and
we need them to know OLPH is thinking and
praying for them. A group is being organized to
deliver cards to all nursing homes in Carroll, and
Haralson counties on a monthly basis. Our initial
plan is to send it to Catholic Residents and hopefully be able to
send it to all the residents in the future. You can help by
dropping off the cards to them each month, or donate blank
cards for us to use. Please place them in the Saint Vincent de
Paul Food containers in the front or back of the church. This is
our way of letting them know that our church cares for them.

EL PAPA FRANCISCO NOS HABLA-La familia tiene
muchos problemas que la ponen a prueba. Una de estas pruebas es la
pobreza. Pensemos en las numerosas familias que viven en las periferias
de las grandes ciudades, pero también en las zonas rurales... ¡Cuánta
miseria, cuánta degradación! Y luego, para agravar la situación, en
algunos lugares llega también la guerra. La guerra es siempre algo terrible.
Además, la guerra golpea especialmente a las poblaciones civiles, a las
familias. Ciertamente la guerra es la «madre de todas las pobrezas», la
guerra empobrece a la familia, es una gran saqueadora de vidas, de almas,
y de los afectos más sagrados y más queridos.
A pesar de esto, hay muchas familias pobres que buscan vivir con
dignidad su vida diaria, a menudo confiando abiertamente en la bendición
de Dios. Esta lección, sin embargo, no debe justificar nuestra indiferencia,
sino aumentar nuestra vergüenza por el hecho de que exista tanta pobreza.
Es casi un milagro que, en medio de la pobreza, la familia siga
formándose, e incluso siga conservando —como puede— la especial
humanidad de sus relaciones. El hecho irrita a los planificadores del
bienestar que consideran los afectos, la generación, los vínculos
familiares, como una variable secundaria de la calidad de vida. ¡No
entienden nada! En cambio, nosotros deberíamos arrodillarnos ante estas
familias, que son una auténtica escuela de humanidad que salva las
sociedades de la barbarie. ¿Qué nos queda, en efecto, si cedemos al
secuestro del César y de Mammón, de la violencia y del dinero, y
renunciamos también a los afectos familiares? Una nueva ética civil
llegará sólo cuando los responsables de la vida pública reorganicen el
vínculo social a partir de la lucha en perversa espiral entre familia y
pobreza, que nos conduce al abismo. La economía actual a menudo se ha
especializado en gozar del bienestar individual, pero practica ampliamente
la explotación de los vínculos familiares. Esto es una contradicción grave.
El inmenso trabajo de la familia naturalmente no está, sin duda, cotizado
en los balances. En efecto, la economía y la política son avaras en materia
de reconocimiento al respecto. Sin embargo, la formación interior de la
persona y la circulación social de los afectos tienen precisamente allí su
propio fundamento. Si lo quitas, todo se viene abajo.
No es sólo cuestión de pan. Hablamos de trabajo, hablamos de instrucción,
hablamos de salud. Es importante entender bien esto. Quedamos siempre
muy conmovidos cuando vemos imágenes de niños desnutridos y
enfermos que nos muestran en muchas partes del mundo. Al mismo
tiempo, nos conmueve también mucho la mirada resplandeciente de
muchos niños, privados de todo, que están en escuelas carentes de todo,
cuando muestran con orgullo su lápiz y su cuaderno. ¡Y cómo miran con
amor a su maestro o a su maestra! Ciertamente los niños saben que el
hombre no vive sólo de pan. También del afecto familiar. Cuando hay
miseria los niños sufren, porque ellos quieren el amor, los vínculos
familiares.
Nosotros cristianos deberíamos estar cada vez más cerca de las familias
que la pobreza pone a prueba. Pero pensad, todos vosotros conocéis a
alguien: papá sin trabajo, mamá sin trabajo... y la familia sufre, las
relaciones se debilitan. Es feo esto. En efecto, la miseria social golpea a la
familia y en algunas ocasiones la destruye. La falta o la pérdida del
trabajo, o su gran precariedad, inciden con fuerza en la vida familiar,
poniendo a dura prueba las relaciones. Las condiciones de vida en los
barrios con mayores dificultades, con problemas habitacionales y de
transporte, así como la reducción de los servicios sociales, sanitarios y
escolares, causan ulteriores dificultades. A estos factores materiales se
suma el daño causado a la familia por pseudo-modelos, difundidos por los
medios de comunicación social basados en el consumismo y el culto de la
apariencia, que influencian a las clases sociales más pobres e incrementan
la disgregación de los vínculos familiares. Cuidar a las familias, cuidar el
afecto, cuando la miseria pone a prueba a la familia.
