Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Thursday, the Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is one of only three births celebrated in the liturgical
year – the other two being the births of Jesus and John the Baptist, at both of which the Blessed Virgin Mary was present. The Birth of
Mary is the birth of a new light into the world, a new holiness, which shines forth in the radiant humility and joy of the daughter of Zion. It is reported in the extra-biblical literature about the Blessed Virgin Mary that she was so marvelously full of life and joy that everyone wanted to be around her all the time. According to the mystics, anyone who came into contact with her was filled with an inexpressible delight and immediately began to smile and feel deep serenity. Her personality and presence were like a cool breeze on a
bright day filled with the aroma of new flowers, the air fresh and clean from recently fallen rain. She was springtime itself from the
earliest age, such that when the time came for her marriage she had many suitors (and the one chosen for her miraculously by Almighty
God was the only one humble enough to consider himself unworthy of her). This is the holiness that is born into the world from the
womb of St. Anne on September 8. All creation rejoices to see this sacred harbinger of salvation. Finally, God has found His holy
dwelling place, the true Ark of the Covenant, the one pure and holy enough for Him to find His abode. Mary, whose conception we
celebrated on December 8, comes forth from her elderly mother on September 8, presenting this original holiness of hers to the whole
world. The primary characteristic of our Blessed Mother is humility. Every movement of her intellect and will breathed forth a total
dependence on God and a total obedience to Him. Her immense faith and burning charity were built on the foundation of her perfect
humility. This humility is fittingly witnessed in the darkness which shrouds her holy birth. Nothing of it is reported in the Sacred Scriptures and even Jesus’s genealogies are traced through St. Joseph. All we know of her birth from Scripture is that she is of the tribe of
Judah and the house of David, and perhaps also that she is additionally of the tribe of Levi of the house of Aaron. This silence and hiddenness about her birth is a lesson for us to seek the hidden life – “to love to be unknown” in the words of The Imitation of Christ.
Mary is our teacher of humility especially in helping us in purity of intention. If every action of our lives is only for God’s glory, then
we needn’t worry about others seeing how great we are or thinking how successful we are. God is the only one we need to please. Mary
teaches us this. It can be difficult – deeply painful – at times to live in such a hidden way. Our Blessed Mother is always with us, teaching us the path of humility, which keeps us safe for salvation. Let us rejoice today at her upcoming birth! She is born to be our Mother!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
El jueves, la Iglesia celebra el Nacimiento de la Santísima Virgen
María. Es uno de los tres nacimientos que se celebran en el año
litúrgico - siendo los otros dos el nacimiento de Jesús y San Juan
Bautista, en los cuales la Virgen María estaba presente. El nacimiento de María es el nacimiento de una nueva luz al mundo, una nueva
santidad, que resplandece en la humildad radiante y alegría de la hija
de Sion. Se ha informado fuera de la literatura bíblica acerca de la
Virgen María que ella era tan maravillosamente llena de vida y alegría que todo el mundo quería estar cerca de ella todo el tiempo.
Según los místicos, cualquier persona que entraba en contacto con
ella se llenaba de una alegría inexpresable e inmediatamente comenzaba a sonreír y sentir profunda serenidad. Su personalidad y su
presencia eran como una brisa fresca en un día brillante llenaba con
el aroma de las flores nuevas, el aire fresco y limpio de la lluvia
recién caída. Ella era la misma primavera desde una edad temprana,
de manera que cuando llegó el momento de su matrimonio tenía
muchos pretendientes (y el elegido para ella milagrosamente por
Dios Todopoderoso era el único lo suficientemente humilde como
para considerarse a sí mismo indigno de ella). Esta es la santidad
que nace en el mundo desde el vientre de Santa Ana el 8 de septiembre. Toda la creación se alegra de ver este presagio sagrado de la
salvación. Finalmente, Dios ha encontrado habitación de su santuario, la verdadera Arca de la Alianza, lo mas puro y santo para él
encontrar su morada. María, cuya concepción celebramos el 8 de
diciembre, sale de su anciana madre el 8 de septiembre, presentando
su santidad original de ella para todo el mundo. La característica
principal de nuestra Madre Santísima es la humildad. Cada movimiento de su intelecto y voluntad exhaló una total dependencia de
Dios y una total obediencia a Él. Su inmensa fe y caridad ardiente se
construyen en la fundación de su perfecta humildad. Esta humildad
es testigo apropiado en la oscuridad que envuelve a su santa nacimiento. Nada de esto se informa en la Sagrada Escritura y hasta en
las genealogías de Jesús, incluso se remonta a través de San José.
Todo lo que sabemos de su nacimiento en la Escritura es que ella es
de la tribu de Judá y la casa de David, y quizás también que ella es,
además, de la tribu de Levi de la casa de Aarón. Este silencio y ocultamiento acerca de su nacimiento es una lección para nosotros buscar la vida oculta - "Amar lo desconocido" en las palabras de la
Imitación de Cristo. María es nuestra maestra especialmente de
humildad ayudándonos en la pureza de intención. Si cada acción de
nuestra vida es sólo para la gloria de Dios, entonces no tenemos que
preocuparnos por los demás viendo lo grande que somos o pensando
en el éxito que tengamos. Dios es al único que necesitamos agradar.
María nos enseña esto. Puede ser difícil - profundamente doloroso a veces vivir de esta manera oculta. Nuestra Santa Madre está siempre con nosotros, enseñándonos el camino de la humildad, que nos
mantiene a salvo nuestra salvación. Alegrémonos hoy por su próximo nacimiento! Ella ha nacido para ser nuestra Madre!
