Recognizing ourselves as children of God
If we are asked who is Shakira, Juan Gabriel, or any other
celebrity, we wouldn’t have much trouble responding. Stars,
idols, singers … But if we were asked who Jesus is, could we
respond just as easily?
In the times of Jesus, there was much talk about him and
many interpretations: that he was a prophet, that he was the
reincarnation of some biblical figure...Jesus is interested in
knowing what those closest say about him. Finally, Peter
confesses that he is the Son of
God, the Messiah. But what
does this mean? To be the
Messiah is to be the one sent
by the Father , yes, the
Anointed One; the one who
would save us. But he will
save in the manner described
by Isaiah, that is, by serving.
To respond in that way about
Jesus
has
serious
consequences for us. To
respond in that Jesus is the
Son of God means to
recognize ourselves as children of God. To respond that
Jesus is the Savior, Messiah, means to recognize that he is
offering us salvation. To respond that Jesus is the Servant of
God means that we must enter into the same service. And it
is not easy. To recognize Jesus and to confess him has
serious consequences.
Because actions are about love and not about good
reasons. There is no need to talk a lot or go through the
world bragging about being very religious. To live as
children of God compels us to defend our own dignity and
that of others; it means maintaining the truth above all else.
To live as being saved means to resist everything that would
enslave us again: addictions, bad habits, selfishness, sticking
to ourselves, anger and violence. To live like servants of God
means to dedicate ourselves to service, the way Jesus did.
That brought him oppositions, persecution, and even death.
On occasions, it also brought him the lack of understanding
from his own friends. He had to endure betrayal and
possibly even discouragement, but as the servant described
by Isaiah, he knew that God was with him.

What consequences that knowing I am a child of God have for
me? What am I called to do?

Dear Parishioners,
THE NEW MEETING ROOMS … we have started to use our
new space in the Lower Church … There are 4 new meeting
rooms which have been given names of saints and numbers …
the groups that will use the rooms are posted on the doors and
each group will have its own cabinet for storage … there are
bathroom facilities in the Lower Church as well … the
Carismatic Group will continue to use the Lower Church on
Saturday evenings for their Prayer Service … the groups that
will be using the meeting rooms will be the Cursillo, Santo
Nombre, Sagrado Corazon, Comite Hispano and the Sewers and
Quilters … we are grateful to Luis Mercado and his staff for a
job well-done … there will be a special blessing and naming of
the Conference Center in the near future … any suggestions for
names or dedication? Let me know.
CCD CLASSES … we begin the classes today at 9 am in the
elementary school on Sundays followed by Mass at 10:30 am …
parents should attend Mass with their children at 10:30 am … if
you have not registered today is the day to register … also,
register for the teenage program … the RCIA PROGRAM in
English and in Spanish … the Bible classes in English and in
Spanish … see Sister Adelina or Sister Eleazar for more
information and registration fees.
ST. RAYMOND HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS ... will host their
16th Annual Alumni Association Golf Outing on Monday,
September 24, 2012 at Paramount Country Club. Registration
begins at 10:30am, shotgun start at 12 Noon, and cocktails,
dinner and awards begin at 5:00pm. Contact Christopher Ellis at

are interested in participating. Sponsorship opportunities are
also available. Come out and support the school’s largest
fundraiser, that provides students in need with financial aid to
earn a St. Raymond education.
AFRICAN COMMUNITY … meets TODAY with Msgr. Stephen
after the 10:30 am Mass in the Lower Church.
BUS TRIP … Saturday, October 13 … Sacred Heart Society is
hosting a trip to the “National Blue Army Shrine of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary”, a Catholic shrine dedicated to the
message of Fatima located in Washington, New Jersey …cost
$35 per person, $10 deposit is required … leaving from the
church parking lot at 7AM and returning at 7PM. For more

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CARISMATIC GROUP … the
concert was a success last week and we thank the group for
their generous donation to the Church Renovation Fund.
HELP IS NEEDED … our bulletin company which publishes the
weekly parish bulletin is in need of more advertising in order
for us to maintain our contract … please spread the word to the
local businesses, friends with stores in the area and other
contacts … the ad rates are very reasonable … call 1-8005240263 to place an ad … I would welcome a committee of
interested parishioners who would visit our local stores …
please see me for more information if you can help us maintain
our contract. The bulletin is read by more than 600 people each
week.
BAPTISMS … if you wish to have your baby baptized, you must
be a registered member of the parish coming to church on
Sundays (registration is in the rectory); godparents must have
letters of recommendation from their own parishes in order to
be a godparent (godparents must be Catholic, baptized,
received First Holy Communion and Confirmation and --- if
married --- married in the Catholic Church); you must also have
the birth certificate of the baby … come to the rectory for an
interview with one of the priests, more information and baptism
class dates and baptism dates.
BAPTISMS FOR OLDER CHILDREN … follow a different
procedure … if your child is in the elementary school, you will
receive information in September … if your child attends a
public school, please register in the Sunday Program and speak
with Sister Adelina or Sister Eleazar.
MARRIAGES…you must be a member of this parish in order to
be married here…if you are planning a marriage, please register
and speak with one of the priests for more information …
Catholics should be married in the Catholic Church … marriage
preparation usually requires about one year of classes,
preparation, conferences, etc.
THE ELECTIONS ARE COMING … we will be electing a
President in a few weeks … please begin to study the positions
of the candidates closely … all US citizens should exercise the
precious right to vote … make a decision about the candidates
and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE in November.

Life Teen Kick-Off will be held on September 23rd in the

EL CONCILIO DE LA PARROQUIA … nuestra primera
reunión es el lunes, 17 de septiembre a las 7:30 pm en el Salón
Flynn en el edificio de la escuela … todos los miembros deben
estar presentes … observadores están bienvenidos como
empezamos un año nuevo.
FORMACION DE FE DE FAMILIA … para padres que tienen a
niños en PRE-K en nuestra escuela católica … el domingo, 23 de
septiembre a las 11 am en el auditorio seguido por Misa a las 12
del mediodía … asistencia será tomada … Monseñor Graham
será el orador.
MISA & CELEBRACION DE APERTURA DE LIFETEEN … una
Misa especial de comienzo de año será celebrada el domingo, 23
de septiembre a las 4:30 pm en la iglesia … todos están
bienvenidos como empezamos otro año con nuestros jóvenes!
POR QUE LOS CATOLICOS ESTAN INTERESADOS EN
LIBERTAD RELIGIOSA … como católicos y como
norteamericanos, nosotros somos llamados a proteger y
defender la libertad religiosa. Si vamos hacer los trabajos
buenos que nuestra fe nos llama hacer, debemos tener la
libertad de seguir nuestra conciencia y practicar nuestra
religión.
INSCRIPCIÓN PARA LAS CLASES DE BIBLIA…continúan
hasta el domingo, 14 de Octubre de 9am—3pm en el salón de
CCD … clases en español comenzará el lunes 15 de octubre a las
7pm y en inglés, el martes 16 de octubre a las 7pm … Precio por
clase es $25.
DESAYUNO DE REGRESO A CASA DE LA PARROQUIA ... el
domingo, 14 de octubre de 2012, siguiendo la Misa de las 12 del
Mediodía en el Auditorio de la Escuela Primaria. Sólo asientos
pagados por adelantado. Precio si lo compra temprano es $10;
después del 7 de octubre, el precio es $15. Boletos no serán

LA ESCUELA PRIMARIA … debutará su propio Concilio de
Alumnos el martes, 14 de noviembre a las 6:30 PM, con su
primera reunión. Si es un egresado de la Escuela Primaria de
San Ramón e interesado en unirse como un Fundador o
Fundadora del Concilio, llamar por favor a Arlene Alegre
Chin al 718-597-3232.
DOMINGO ESPECIAL DE REGISTRACION… es importante
estar registrado en la parroquia, recibir sus sobres y estar en
nuestra lista de cartas … tendremos un domingo especial de
registración el domingo, 14 de octubre después de todas las
Misas … podrá registrarse, recibir sobres temporarios y llegar a
ser un miembro registrado de la parroquia.
CASA ABIERTA DE LA ESCUELA SECUNDARIA DE CHICOS
DE SAN RAMON … el domingo, 21 de octubre a las 12 del
mediodía hasta las 3 pm … padres y alumnos en el septimo y
octavo grado son invitados a visitar la escuela, especialmente
nuestros nuevos salones de música y computadoras y Complejo
de Consejería.
LA COMUNIDAD PUERTORRIQUEÑA … celebra su baile
cena anual el viernes, 9 de noviembre en Astoria World Manor

Misa en honor a Nuestra Señora de la Providencia será
celebrada en la Catedral el domingo, 18 de noviembre a las 4 pm
… todos están invitados a la Misa en San Patricio .
FELICITACIONES … y gracias … a nuestros directores de la
escuela y personal en nuestras 3 escuelas por una gran apertura
de las escuelas … nuestras escuelas todas tienen matriculaciones
llenas gracias al gran trabajo de muchos y los sacrificios que
hacen los padres y familias para dar a sus niños el regalo de la
educación católica.
SERVIDORES DEL ALTAR … nuestras reuniones empiezan
otra vez el martes, 18 de septiembre a las 3 pm en la iglesia para
los estudiantes en nuestra escuela primaria y escuelas públicas
… empezamos con estudiantes en el sexto grado y grados más
altos … entrenaremos un nuevo grupo de estudiantes en quinto
grado en enero.

HONORES … el sábado, 13 de octubre en Maestro’s … llamar a

UNCION DE LOS ENFERMOS … en inglés el sábado, 13 de
octubre a las 12 del mediodía … en español el sábado, 27 de
octubre a las 12 mediodía (Misa en inglés será en la Iglesia de
Abajo el 27 de octubre) … marcar sus calendarios.

Reconocer que somos hijos de Dios
Si nos preguntaran quien es Shakira, o quien es Juan
Gabriel, o alguna otra celebridad, no tendríamos
mucho problema en responder. Estrellas, ídolos,
cantantes...Pero, si se nos preguntara, quien es Jesús, se
hablaba mucho de Él y había muchas interpretaciones:
que si era un profeta, que si era la reencarnación de
alguna figura bíblica...A Jesús le interesa saber qué
dicen los que están más cercanos a Él. Por fin Pedro lo
confiesa como Hijo de Dios, Mesías. Pero, ¿qué quiere
decir esto? Ser Mesías es ser el enviado del Padre, el
Ungido, sí. El que ha de salvar. Peor ha de salvar al
estilo que describe Isaías, es decir, sirviendo.
Responder eso sobre
Jesús tiene consecuencias
bastante
serías
para
nosotros. Responder que
Jesús es Hijo de Dios
significa reconocernos a
nosotros mismos como
hijos de Dios. Responder
que Jesús es Salvador,
Mesías,
significa
reconocer que se nos está
ofreciendo la salvación.
Responder que Jesús es
el Siervo de Dios,
significa que tenemos que entrar en ese mismo
servicio. Y no es fácil. Reconocer a Jesús y confesarle
tiene consecuencias graves.
Porque obras son amores y no buenas razones. No
hace falta hablar mucho ni andar por el mundo
presumiendo de ser muy creyentes. Pero sí supone la
acción. Vivir como hijos de Dios nos obliga a defender
nuestra propia dignidad y la de los demás; significa
mantener la verdad por encima de todo. Vivir como
salvados significa resistir todo lo que nos esclavizaría
de nuevo: adicciones, malos hábitos, egoísmos,
encerramientos en nosotros mismos, ira, violencia.
Vivir como siervos de Dios significa entregarnos al
servicio de los demás, al estilo en que lo hizo Jesús. A
Él eso le trajo oposición, persecución e incluso la
muerte. Le trajo también, en ocasiones, la falta de
compresión de sus propios amigos. Tuvo que soportar
la traición y posiblemente el desaliento. Pero, como el
siervo que describe Isaías, sabia que Dios estaba con Él.
Para la reflexión
¿Qué consecuencias tiene para mí el saberme hijo de
Dios? ¿Qué obras estoy llamado a hacer?
