ennart Åberg is the type of jazz musician who is not afraid to take chances,
try new angles or look for unusual
solutions. He has done it before. Naturally, he does it again in ”Seven Pieces.”
He is a musician first, an immediately recognizable saxophone- and flute-player
who has been a part of the Swedish jazz
scene for more than thirty years now.
Here, though, it is the composer Lennart
Åberg who is in the spotlight, presenting
seven pieces of varying length for three
different ensembles. He also shows himself to be a bandleader
with a feeling for the
moment. The choice of
musicians is impeccable, and one cannot
say anything about the
soloists (Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson,
Bosse Broberg and Peter Erskine) other
than that they are all world-class musicians. That they in turn have chosen to perform Lennart Åberg’s music can be attributed to the fact that he writes music on
the same level.

Es hat am Vorabend geregnet, a chamber
opera (1984) by Eberhard Eyser will have
its première in Nalen – the famous musical meeting place in Stockholm – on December 30th with simultaneous transmission on the Internet. The production will
be a cooperation between SAMI (the
Swedish Musicians and Artists Interest organization), the Europäisches KulturZentrum in Erfurt, Germany and the
Austrian Künstlerhaus Klagenfurt and
Toihaus, Salzburg. The small ensemble
consists of Lisa Fornhammar (soprano),
Rupert Bergmann (baritone) and the
Ensemble Kreativ, conducted by Alexander Drcar. Later on there will be performances in Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Erfurt
as well as a projected CD release.

MTV Music Awards
One of the big annual events in the popular music field is the MTV Awards
show. Last year it was arranged in and
thus broadcast from Dublin. On November 16th it will be Stockholm’s turn with
the event taking place in the big arena
Globen.
Export Music Sweden is involved in a
couple of the projects being arranged
around the gala event. On Tuesday November 14th there will be a seminar
about music export arranged at Nalen
(see above). On Wednesday November
15th Stockholm will thrill to the sound of
musicians and other performers all over
the city. Music will be heard in shopping
centres, in underground stations, in restaurants, at the airport and so on. The
800 or so journalists attending the gala
will thus experience that Swedish is a
land of music not only on TV but also in
real life.

MusicPool – new Web opportunity for
Swedish music
The label of the Swedish MIC, Phono
Suecia, has recently become involved
with a company for the purpose of downloading of music from the Internet. The
company is called MusicPool Scandinavia AB and is owned by ten other independent record companies. As well as
downloading, MusicPool also offers CDs
on demand – which means that you can
create your own CD with your favourite
selection of Swedish music.
MusicPool will not have a website of
its own but instead will work to be present as the music shop via a number of
different portals.
The main objective of the company is
to make it easier to get hold of Swedish
music and recordings that are otherwise
difficult to obtain. The labels represented
cover all kinds of music from folk music,
dance music and jazz to contemporary
classical music. The main target groups
are in Scandinavia. Consequently the system is only in Swedish, but as it will be
published on the Internet anybody will
be able to download or order CDs. The
goal is for MusicPool to be up and running by the late autumn of this year.
Hans Gefors’
opera Clara
to a libretto by Jean-Claude Carrière will receive its Swiss première
on November 3rd at the Stadt
Theater in Bern. A further six performances are scheduled during
November. The opera was a commission from the Paris OpéraComique and was first given there
in December 1998. On May 12th
2001 it will have its Stockholm première at the Royal Opera.

provides on-line catalogues where your
requirements for repertoire of new music
can be found. Take a look at
http://www.iamic.ie/
which provides access to the websites of
each of the Centre’s members. On the
IAMIC homepage can also be found the
Association’s newsletter containing upto-date information on a variety of key
subjects. One of the principal features of
this site is the ‘Annual List’ which offers
carefully-chosen guides to contemporary
classical music that has been written over
the last five years. For 2000 the Annual
List has string quartets as its subject.

Polar Music Prize
The previous MD of ExMS, Stuart Ward,
has from September 1st been working as
the Managing Director of the Polar Music
Prize. Next year the prize will be given
for the tenth time and there are plans to
celebrate this and develop the prize’s
marketing. The prize is one of the biggest music prizes in the world and, as far
as we know, the only one whose aim is
to get all genres of music to come closer together. The board of the prize
foundation has planned also to develop the prize ceremony with events
around it such as seminars and concerts. The foundation is administered
by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Lindberg
– en Guds
spelman
is the title of a monograph (in Swedish) by
Bo Harry Sandin (Notex
produktion, 2000) based on a chronological review of his compositions placed
within a biographical context. He is best
known for Gammal fäbodpsalm (for organ – with numerous arrangements) and
for Pingst (Pentecost, for mixed choir),
but he also wrote another 450 works, a
selection of which are listed in an appendix to the book. Lindberg’s music was
clearly influenced by the melodies of his
native Dalecarlia. Whilst he held substantial posts during his working life such as
being organist at the Engelbrekt Church
in Stockholm and Professor in Harmony
at the Music Conservatory, he was also a
very practical individual, being involved
in organ building.

Gustaf Paulson
(1898-1966)
was an organist in Helsingborg, southern
Sweden, and a prolific composer in most
genres. His works remained unpublished
and not performed in the capital, two
facts that have limited the evaluation of
him as a composer. Thomas Ahrén du
Quercy, himself an organist and musicologist, has decided to shed some light on
Paulson and his works in a book (in
Swedish) called ‘Gustaf med tillnammnet
Paulson’ (Arcus förlag, PO Box 1026,
S-221 04 Lund). A chronological list of
works completes this volume.
Hugo Alfvén and
Ture Rangström
are the subjects (in French) of two new
Bulletins of the Association française Carl
Nielsen under the titles Dictionnaire
Hugo Alfvén (Bulletin No. 21, 1999/2000)
and Ture Rangström: le poète des sons
(Bulletin No. 22, 2000). Using the format
of personal impressions these Bulletins
are making positive contributions to the
spread of knowledge of Swedish composers in the French-speaking world. You
can acquire them by contacting their

Obituaries
Bengt Hambraeus died on September 22nd on his farm at Apple Hill
outside Montreal. He was active as a
professor in musicology at McGill
University, Montreal from 1972 until
his retirement in 1993. His interests
went from organ playing to French
tabulatures, and he took a vivid interest in international music. In Sweden he was one of the first composers in the field of electroacoustic
music. When he was a producer at
the Swedish Radio he was instrumental in introducing contemporary
music. He took an active part in the
Swedish aesthectic debate and just as
often in the field of performance
practice. Hambraeus is especially wellknown for new organ techniques, as
can be seen in his Five Organ Pieces
composed from 1969 to 1975, Constellations I-V and Livre d’orgue.

Åke Hodell died on July 29th in
Stockholm. He was a multi-faceted
poet and one considered to have
struck new paths in Swedish literature. In the sphere of music he made
substantial contributions to the textsound genre through titles such as
Spirit of Ecstasy: racing car opera
and Mr Smith in Rhodesia (Phono
Suecia PSCD 41).

The name of Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist is well known both in the
world of film music and also
amongst accordionists everywhere.
Brass musicians also have a great
love for his music. Yet he had further
and higher aims and at the time of his
death (on July 1st) he was working
on his tenth symphony. Some titles
of his compositions give an indication of his concern over important
issues – Humanity (Symphony No. 7,
with choir) and Survival (Symphony
No. 9). Worth mentioning here is
Bärbel Hölzing’s Torbjörn Iwan
Lundquist : Werkverzeichnis und
Diskographie (in German) published
by Augemus Musikverlag in 1994.

A prolific and vigorous lieder tradition runs
like a golden thread through Swedish music
of the past two centuries, right down to the present day. The lied today is a supremely living
and relevant art form, defying all pronouncements of its death. These two volumes feature some of the most eminent Swedish vocal composers of the first half of the 20th century.
Their choices of poetry were supremely personal, and their musical interpretations do more than just illustrate the text, probing the depths where words end and the music takes
over.

NEW RELEASES ON CD
On the last Saturday in May (as has become the custom) Swedish music was
heard all across the world, broadcasting
from 90 radio stations in total of 44 countries. A fresh selection of classical contemporary music, jazz, folk, pop and rock
was offered to our old and new supporters ranging from the Shetland Islands to
Mauritius, Australia and New Zealand,
from Calgary to Bahia Blanca, from Vancouver to Shanghai. By far the largest
number of broadcasts came from Europe
(38 stations in 24 countries with Germany
showing the most interest), followed by
Latin America (25 stations in 12 countries). Canada and the USA came up with
only 14 radio stations between them,
which seems to reflect the current broadcasting situation there. We are especially
proud to have won new supporters in
Argentina, Colombia, Croatia, France,
Lithuania, Mexico, Moldavia, Nigeria and
Yugoslavia. We are also happy to note
that there is still an interest in classical
contemporary music and jazz. In some
parts of the world there is also a strong response to folk music – in Ecuador and
Germany, for example.
