Old Ox! Schubert Rondo h-Moll D.895 Artister: Midori & Ozgur Aydin Presentation: Camilla Lundberg MIDORI The violinist Midori is recognized not only for the evolution and scope of her 28-year career as one of the most dazzlingly gifted performers before the public, but increasingly for the prescient and innovative community engagement initiatives to which she devotes a substantial amount of her energies and resources worldwide on an ongoing basis. Named a Messenger of Peace by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2007, she has created a new model for young artists who seek to balance the joys and demands of a performing career at the highest level with a hands-on investment in the power of music to change lives. Midori’s season will begin with performances at such festivals as Ravinia, Schleswig-Holstein, Caramoor and Edinburgh, and will continue with over 100 concerts in 19 countries throughout the year. She will make her fifth recital tour devoted entirely to new music, this one culminating in an engagement at Zankel Hall in New York City. Midori will appear with the BBC Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and many other eminent orchestras in 2010-2011, and in collaborations with such conductors as Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Donald Runnicles, Kent Nagano, Alan Gilbert, and Edo deWaart. In addition to the new music tour, the season will feature four more recital tours and one chamber music tour – with cellist Antoine Lederlin, pianist Jonathan Biss, and violist Nobuko Imai. Midori’s love of performing is balanced every year with substantial commitments to education and community engagement initiatives. Now in her 7th year as Jascha Heifetz Chair at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music and her 4th year as Chair of its Strings Department, Midori thrives amidst the challenges presented by her full-time career as educator and administrator at a major university. To these commitments she adds ongoing, hands-on involvement in the four community engagement organizations she has founded – Midori & Friends, Partners in Performance, Orchestra Residencies Program, and Music Sharing. In 2004, Midori joined the ranks of published authors with the release in Germany of a memoir titled Einfach Midori (Simply Midori), for the publisher Henschel Verlag. Midori was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1971 and began studying the violin with her mother, Setsu Goto, at a very early age. In 1982, when Zubin Mehta first heard her play, he was so impressed that he invited her to be a surprise guest soloist for the New York Philharmonic’s traditional New Year’s Eve concert, on which occasion she received a standing ovation and the impetus to begin a major career. Midori lives in Los Angeles. In 2000, she received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Gender Studies at the Gallatin School of New York University, graduating magna cum laude, and in 2005 received her Master’s degree in Psychology. Away from school and the concert hall, Midori enjoys reading, writing and attending the theater. Her violin is the 1734 Guarnerius del Gesu ”ex-Huberman”, which is on lifetime loan to her from the Hayashibara Foundation. She uses four bows – two by Dominique Peccatte, one by François Peccatte, and one by Paul Siefried. Foto: Carl-Johan SöderSVT ROBY LAKATOS Gypsy violinist Roby Lakatos is not only a scorching virtuoso, but a musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility. Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz and in his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos is the rare musician who defies definition. He is eferred to as a gypsy violinist or “devil’s fiddler”, a classical virtuoso, a jazz improviser, a composer and arranger, and a 19th-century throwback, and he is actually all of these things at once. He is the kind of universal musician so rarely encountered in our time—a player whose strength as an interpreter derives from his activities as an improviser and composer. He has performed at the great halls and festivals of Europe, Asia and America. rBorn in 1965 into the legendary family of gypsy violinists descended from Janos Bihari, “King of Gypsy Violinists”, Roby Lakatos was introduced to music as a child and at age nine he made his public debut as first violin in a gypsy band. His musicianship evolved not only within his own family but also at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Budapest, where he won the first prize for classical violin in 1984. Between 1986 and 1996, he and his ensemble delighted audiences at ”Les Atéliers de la grande Ille” in Brussels, their musical home throughout this period. He has collaborated with Vadim Repin and Stéphane Grappelli, and his playing was greatly admired by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, who always made a point of visiting the club in Brussels to hear Lakatos. In March 2004, Lakatos appeared to great acclaim with the London Symphony Orchestra in the orchestra’s “Genius of the Violin” festival alongside Maxim Vengerov. When Roby Lakatos mixes the so-called ”classical music” with the magic of the Hungarian-gypsy vitality, it does not turn into a disrespectful attitude toward the higher cultural heritage, but it more reflects the deep tradition rooted in the cultural heritage of the Gypsy people and offers new, refreshing pleasures to the listener and music lover. And just as Liszt, Brahms and others used the Hungarian overtones in their compositions, so now the public profits from the confrontation of these classics with the gypsy roots. This enlivens all those men and women in whose veins still pulses at least a little bit of the blood of the wandering spirit. ALISSA MARGULIS The Guardian” describes Alissa Margulis’s playing as „exceptional”, Ivry Gitlis praises it as ”a revelation”. Appreciated for her expressive and very emotional performances, Alissa Margulis regularly plays in important concert halls such as the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, the Cologne Philharmony, the Vienna Musikverein, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Izumi Hall in Osaka, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden, the Tel-Aviv Art Center, Beethovenhalle Bonn, the Walton Arts Center Chicago, the Schönberg Hall in Los Angeles or the Vienna Konzerthaus. Born in Germany into a family of Russian musicians, Alissa Margulis studied in Cologne with Zakhar Bron, in Brussels with Augustin Dumay and in Vienna with Pavel Vernikov. She made her first public appearance at the age of seven with the Budapest Soloists and has performed since then with numerous orchestras such as the Kremerata Baltica, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Beethovenorchester Bonn, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, the SWR and the WDR Rundfunkorchester, the Oxford Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lorraine and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Her many prizes at international music competitions include those at the Wieniawski Competition in Poland, the Spohr Youth Competition, the Novosibirsk Violin Competition, Viotti Vercelli Competition in Italy, the Osaka Chamber Music Competition, the UNISA String Competition in Pretoria, the Vittorio Gui Competition in Florence, Alissa Margulis received the Award for Young Artists by the European Foundation for Culture. Alissa Margulis is an enthusiastic chamber music player and collaborates with artists such as Martha Argerich, Yuri Bashmet, David Geringas, Ivry Gitlis, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Lilya Zilberstein and Paul Badura-Skoda. She appeared further at the Davos Festival, the Wiener Festwochen, the Encuentro di Musica Santander, the Gstaad Festival Yehudi Menuhin, the Oleg Kagan Festival Kreuth, the Kronberg Festival, the Lockenhaus Festival, the Martha Argerich Presents: Odyssey in Ljubljana, the Progetto Martha Argerich Festival of Lugano, the Radio France Festival in Menton at Côte d’Azur, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Tours Festival, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Herbstfestspiele Baden-Baden and the Verbier Festival. Improvisation is an important component in Pedrams music, as noted in the latest CD release. Mats Einarsson Pedram was born 1984 in the small town Saqiz situated in the Kurdish parts of Iran. At the age of 10 Pedram and his family moved to Sweden. Playing the violin was not a matter of course. However at the age of 13, with some influence from his father Pedram started to take violin lessons in classical music. After studying music in high school Pedrams interest for folklore became stronger and in 2008 he began at the World Music Master Program at the Music Academy in Gothenburg.
