In the early 1960s Radio McGill began broadcasting from the basement of McGill’s SSMU
building. Every weeknight between 7 and 8 o’clock on CFCF-fm McGill students discussed
cultural and political issues in French and English and read poetry and monologues, all
accompanied by folk, classical, and jazz music programing. Content was largely focused
on local communities as well as underrepresented or alternative viewpoints.
In 1966, when Radio McGill began broadcasting closed-circuit on-campus, the
message was the same, alternative news, spoken word and music programming.
In 1982 Radio McGill CFRM received their Cable TV license and began broadcasts
to the downtown montreal area.
November 16th! 1987! CKUT Radio McGill is born at 90.3 on the FM dial.
September 2007, CKUT drops the “Radio McGill” addendum, following negotiations
with McGill university; CKUT 90.3 community/campus radio station as you know it is arrived!
If you are a CKUT alumni, get in touch! We’d love to document your story, and archive
our history!
MANDATE
To represent the marginal voice, the marginalized community. To report on issues that are
underreported in mainstream news, or provide a different view on those topics which are
represented by the corporate/media conglomerate.
To provide training and facilities for the community of Montreal, McGill students and nonMcGill students alike. CKUT offers the space for skill-sharing, for independent learning,
and provides on-site expertise.
CRTC conditions include a 4 minute/hour limit on advertising, 35% Canadian content on most
programs, and less than 10% top 40 (“hit”) songs.
On-air content is determined by volunteers, collectives, and community voices. The focus
tends to be on diversity, community, local culture creators and creations, radical emancipatory acts of EDUCATION, the Do It Yourself ethic and ALL THE HITS YOU NEVER HEARD. CKUT
provides an alternative to top 40 playlists, corporate sponsorships, and cloying consumerist advertisements.
CKUT is a non-profit, member owned and operated corporation, whose primary purpose is to
operate a licensed FM radio station.
ANATOMY
CKUT’s 100+ radio programs are broadcast 24/7, year round, 4946 Watts at 90.3 FM, 91.7
cable FM, streamed and archived at www.ckut.ca
The station signal reaches the entire island of Montreal and can be heard as far away as
Vermont, the Laurentians and the Eastern Townships.
CKUT is made up of over 300 volunteers working with a staff of coordinators, who manage
the day to day operations. The station operates on a collective management system that
includes volunteers in decision-making.All on-air programmers are volunteers. Decisions
regarding administrative issues and programming issues are made by committees of volunteers and paid staff. There are five admisitrative bodies responsible for the management
of CKUT:
THE
THE
THE
THE
THE
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
PROGRAMMING COMMITEE
STEERING COMMITTEE
FINANCE COMMITTEE
GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE
Regular meetings of most of these bodies are open to the membership of the station and
membership is open to anyone.
CKUT MUSIC PROGRAMMING showcases independent and creative music that is not represented
on mainstream commercial radio in Montreal. Music programming also includes interviews,
announcements and discussion.
CKUT SPOKEN WORD PROGRAMMING is topic or issue-oriented. Programs are centered around
current events, politics, community concerns, culture, and the arts. Culture programming
also includes a variety of creative productinos and audio art produced by CKUT volunteers
CKUT’s COMMUNITY NEWS COLLECTIVE aims to present a fair, accurate, and well-informed account of current events and issues, to offer a perspective that is timely and a counterweight to other media, and to move beyond sound bites and provide coverage of issues and
events not given adequate attention by commercial or other media.
CKUT recognizes that, through the creation and selection of music, news, and spoken word
programming, it establishes itself as an alternative media voice in Montreal both in content and in format.
