Welcome!
Hamburg is an exciting destination for
lesbian and gay tourists because this city
on the banks of the Alster and Elbe, featuring the Michel and the Reeperbahn,
is dominated by a liberal spirit that links
tradition with modernity. This brochure
features the perfect day in Hamburg –
although one day is of course nowhere
near enough time to do this fantastic
city justice. If you are able, take a little
more time to enjoy the green city with its
cutting-edge architecture, lively scene,
diverse cultural attractions and endless
shopping opportunities.
St. Georg is of particular interest, which
has come to enjoy its reputation as
Hamburg’s gay village. This part of town,
located near the central station and
within a stone’s throw of the Alster, represents the beauty and open attitude of
the whole city. The heart of St. Georg is
the street called Lange Reihe – popular
for shopping, going for a stroll or visiting a
bar or two.
Enjoy your perfect day in Hamburg!

In the morning, I go to Tide Feinkost und
Treibgut, where you can enjoy coffee
from the Speicherstadt warehouses
and fantastic panini. Then I head to the
Karoviertel quarter to my shop, druck
dealer. There’s always something to
do, whether it’s organising the next
exhibition or finishing a few one-off
designs in our screen printing workshop.
For lunch, I head to Kochkontor, where
I can sit and leaf through some cookery
books to get some inspiration for my
next meal. Then I head down to the
Götterschnitt salon by the port where
Anne and Christiane will be cutting my
hair in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. I
then take the ferry downstream to the
Dockland. Then I head inland and uphill
towards Ottensen, where I buy a few
tasty treats for dinner from Paola. Later
on, I pay a visit to Seeteufel. This small,
traditional Hamburg bar owned by Evi is
packed with artists, sailors and stuffed
puffer fish. It’s the perfect way to relax
and see out the day.

high quality – ideally with a nice view
After breakfast or brunch, fashionistas head to
Hamburg’s hip and up-and-coming areas, such as
the Schanze and (right next to it), the Karolinenviertel, or Karo, for a spot of shopping. These areas
feature streets filled with little shops, such as trendy
boutiques and tiny studio shops. If you prefer a
more low-key, friendly and alternative style, head to
the winding streets of Ottensen. Eppendorf and
Winterhude feature more in the way of exquisite,
fashionable and luxury shops, as does the Lange
Reihe in St. Georg. But the biggest selection of all is
in the centre of Hamburg – on the city’s famous
Mönckebergstraße, beautiful Jungfernstieg and
in the covered arcades of the traditional HanseViertel, or the Europa Passage shopping centre.

Sights
Experience the true spirit of this Hanseatic city at
St. Pauli Landungsbrücken with its bustling crowds
of tourists, the sound of barge horns, museum
ships and the various captains calling “Hafenrundfahrt” to invite you on a trip around the port. This
is a great place to begin exploring the city. Not
far from the hustle and bustle of the port, you can
also wander inland to the historic Speicherstadt
warehouse district and Hamburg’s latest major undertaking: the impressive HafenCity development
with the towering Elbphilharmonie concert hall,
due to open soon. Both the old brick warehouses
and the glittering, architecturally ambitious structures of the HafenCity are truly unique. The cruise
ship terminal in the HafenCity has also become a
particularily good focus point as more and more
luxury liners have come to appreciate the close
proximity of the terminal to this growing city.

Right in the middle of Hamburg, the
Alster river has been dammed into a
large, peaceful lake. The paths around
the lake invite you to take a scenic

the Alster from the water by hiring a

Hamburg’s cultural scene does not in any way
fall short of the city’s reputation as the Pearl of the

Visitors can expect a broad mixture of theatre,
music and museums. From drag shows in St. Pauli

(and soon in the Elbphilharmonie, too) to the wide
range of art galleries available, there is something
for everyone here. If you can’t squeeze it all in

Full steam ahead!
Cruise
ships
Hamburg is much more than just a transhipment port – the traditional port birthday celebrations, Hamburg Cruise Days and major ship
launching ceremonies make the port a place
where people come for an experience. Big
ships also make regular stops in Hamburg and
travel the seven seas from the three cruise ship
terminals. With 190 ships coming in and around
600,000 adventurous passengers arriving every
year make the Hanseatic City of Hamburg one
of the most popular stops for cruise ships in
Europe. “Full steam ahead!” is the order of the
day, but not without honouring Hamburg with
a proper look around the city first. To make sure
you get a good idea of the city even if you
only have a little time available, have a read
through our top tips – always located within
walking distance of the cruise ship terminals.
