Named after Capt. Francis A. Hendry, one of its first settlers, Hendry’s major cities are Clewiston and LaBelle. GLADES Named after the Florida Everglades, Glades County was established in 1921. Water is one of Glades’ big draws, since it borders the western side of Lake Okeechobee and hosts the Caloosahatchee River, the main outlet to the Gulf of Mexico. There is an abundance of natural resources and outdoor activities here, including boating, fishing, wildlife, golf, walking and bicycling. The major city and county seat is Moore Haven. Also, in Northeast Glades County is the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation. This brochure has been funded by the Collins Center for Public Policy; visit collinscenter.org. But that is not all. Places like the Caloosahatchee River, Torry Island, and the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation offer a world of adventure, fun and scenic pleasures.
