Jack Rech Marc Di Francisco Sr. Director, IS National Gypsum Co. President & CEO Premier Event Management WWW.PREMIERCIO.COM | 3 AGENDA WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 7:00am CHECK-IN/REGISTRATION 7:00am - 8:15am PEER-TO-PEER NETWORKING/BUFFET BREAKFAST 8:15am - 8:30am WELCOME & PROGRAM INTRODUCTIONS Carolina Ballroom C Emcee: Ann Schatz, Sports Broadcaster & Motivational Speaker Welcome: Jack Rech, 2015 President, Charlotte SIM Chapter; Sr. Director IS, National Gypsum Company Ann Schatz Jack Rech 8:30am - 9:30am OPENING KEYNOTE: THE DATA PROBLEM IN 1960 AND TODAY Carolina Ballroom C Presented by: Jon Bachman, VP Product Management, SimpliVity Jon Bachman SPONSORED BY: Discussion: 50 years ago, enterprises were facing their first data problems – manufacturing facilities lacked the resources to adjust technology plans in real-time and they needed to become more agile and efficient. This lead to Charles (Charlie) Bachman’s invention of the first direct access database management system, where information and plans were kept in an integrated data store. Today, the data problem has evolved, data virtualization technology is essential for enterprises to maintain marketshare and keep up with competitors. CIOs need the best of both worlds – x86 cloud economics and enterprise-grade functionalities – to support an agile and face-paced workforce. Join Jon Bachman, SimpliVity’s VP of Product Management, as he discusses the history of database management, starting with his father’s invention in 1960, and how to evolve your data center to keep up with today’s growing demands. 9:30am - 10:15am BREAK - Networking Pavilion 10:15am - 11:15am Session 1 ASSESSING, IMPROVING AND RETAINING LEADERSHIP TALENT Carolina Ballroom A Moderated by: Michael LaVallee, Executive Search Consultant & Managing Partner, LaVallee & Associates; Member, Charlotte Chapter of SIM Panelists: Darren Schmidt, IT Director, Corning Incorporated Doug DeBrecht, VP IT & CIO, B/E Aerospace Tod Phelps, CTO, Heritage Home Group Todd Bolon, SVP IT, Integration, Advance Auto Parts Michael LaVallee Darren Schmidt Doug BeBrecht Tod Phelps Todd Bolon Discussion: Leadership can be defined as a “social influence which maximizes the efforts of others towards achieving a goal.” Based on their combined experience and leadership in a variety of functional areas this panel will dive a little deeper into three components of leadership mechanics: Assessing, Improving, and Retaining leadership talent. 4 | WWW.PREMIERCIO.COM AGENDA 10:15am - 11:15am Session 2 Mecklenburg 3 Brandon Jackson WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 ALIGN AND INTEGRATE THE BUSINESS WITH I.T. Moderated by: Brandon Jackson, CTO, The Davenport Group Panelists: Shoukat Ali Bhamani, VP & CIPO, Schaeffler Group, North America Liam Durbin, SVP & CIO, American Tire Distributors Michael Bates, VP IT, Springfield LLC Shoukat Ali Bhamani Liam Durbin Michael Bates Discussion: As IT professionals we sometimes lose sight of the fact our jobs don’t exist unless we have any opportunity to apply technology to solve business problems. Which business problems to solve though? Trying to align IT with the business quite often can be frustrating – like shooting a slingshot at a passing racecar. How do we get ourselves “in relative motion with the target” to make it easier to hit? Join this session to hear from a panel of your peers on how they integrate into the business versus attempting to align with it. 11:15am - 11:30am BREAK - Networking Pavilion 11:30am - 12:30pm Session 1 BUSINESS & I.T. ALIGNMENT: EVOLVING vs. RESPONDING Carolina Ballroom A Michael Overton SPONSORED BY: PARTNERING WITH: Moderated by: Michael Overton, Advanced Services Manager, Datalink Panelists: Alan Fitzpatrick, COO, DC74 Joe Topinka, CIO, SnapAV Alan Fitzpatrick Joe Topinka Discussion: We’ve heard about business and IT alignment for years -- and the competitive and time sensitive landscape that is at the core of IT. “IT needs to align with the business.” “IT isn’t providing what we need, so we have to go elsewhere.” “We need it right now!” Sound familiar? This session will cover how we’re seeing organizations overcome some of these challenges, bridging the gap between business units and evolving IT into a manageable business portfolio that allows the organization to make more informed decisions based on value and risk. DAVIDSON BASKETBALL: BY THE NUMBERS Session 2 Presented by: Tim Chartier, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics, Davidson College Discussion: What really counts in sports, specifically Davidson College men’s basketball? Numbers are inherent in sports from tracking the score of a game to logging a player’s performance. In the 1990’s, Moneyball, as it has become known, revolutionized Tim Chartier, PhD. baseball. In the fall of 2013, Dr. Tim Chartier of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Davidson College began analyzing, along with 4 Davidson College students, data for the men’s basketball team. What statistics help and which ones might be misleading? How does sports analytics prepare college students for other areas of analytics? Come see Davidson men’s basketball - by the numbers. Mecklenburg 3 WWW.PREMIERCIO.COM | 5 AGENDA 12:30pm - 2:00pm Carolina Ballroom C WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 LUNCHEON KEYNOTE: TAKE A REALITY CHECK: ARE YOU DOING ENOUGH TO BRIDGE THE LEADERSHIP CHASM? Presented by: Joe Topinka, CIO, SnapAV Joe Topinka Discussion: Joe Topinka has talked the talk and walked the walk. In short, among his many accomplishments, he has mentored numerous current IT leaders, written a book on how to execute true IT business partnerships, eaten his own cooking, delivered measureable results that exceed his competitor’s metrics and received numerous compliments from his peers locally and nationally for his vision, passion, and execution. Shouldn’t Joe be satisfied with these achievements and comforted by a legacy of IT leadership? Many would answer Yes. But for Joe the answer is unfortunately no, not yet anyway. The reason: In Joe’s post-publishing discussions with many IT leaders he has found that the delta between what many leaders ‘think’ they are executing and what they really ‘are’ doing when it comes to executing the best practices of the IT Business Partnership model is staggering and discouraging. And third party statistics back up these anecdotal observations. Frankly, the true courage to change is still very much the exception vs. the rule. It’s simply not good enough to be intellectually aware of the academically correct way to do things yet find yourself too overwhelmed to actually perform the assessing, planning, and executing to achieve the benefits and to raise the relevance and results of our beloved profession. In this session Joe challenges leaders on both sides of the chasm. 2:00pm - 2:30pm DESSERT - Networking Pavilion 2:30pm - 3:30pm Session 1 SECURITY PRESSURES – WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON Carolina Ballroom A Presented by: Michael Cerick, VP of Global Managed Security Solutions, Trustwave Discussion: The pressures facing today’s information security professional are enough to fluster even the most composed data defender. Just how extensive are they? The 2015 Security Pressures Report from Trustwave, based on a survey of more than 1,000 info security practitioners, helps document and quantify the greatest sources of pressure you confront on a daily basis. Packed with meaningful stats and actionable recommendations, this second-annual report will lend context and insight to the most pressing challenges you face. Presented as part of the Charlotte Electronic Crimes Task Force (ECTF) in cooperation with the Charlotte branch of the United States Secret Service. Please give us your feedback on the Charlotte CIO Forum at www.premiercio.com/survey/charlotte 6 | WWW.PREMIERCIO.COM AGENDA 2:30pm - 3:30pm Session 2 Mecklenburg 3 Bruce Anderson WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 DATA GOVERNANCE INSIDE I.T. AND ACROSS THE ENTERPRISE Moderated by: Bruce Anderson, Managing Principal, Andiaz Group, LLC Panelists: Marvin Reem, CIO, Bob Jones University Ben Hall, Director of Technology/CISO, Extended Stay America Marvin Reem Ben Hall Discussion: The objective of a Data Governance culture in an organization has been driven by these objectives: The right data, in the right fields, in an accessible delivery process to the right people at the right time. Successful Data Governance relies on the combination of people skills and motivation, process and technology. This panel discussion will leverage the experiences from panelists in discussing how organizations have initiated, grown and sustained the momentum of Data Governance in view of the multitude of changes that challenge essential “controls” with “agility”, “speed”, “adaptability” and consumer usefulness in the era when the social media and unstructured data drive businesses beyond traditional application and database controls. The facilitator and panelist will share experiences regarding the interaction of Data Governance with business architecture, compliance reporting, privacy requirements, operational processes and the technology tools for creating and monitoring data and information as valuable business and customer assets. 3:30pm - 3:45pm BREAK - Networking Pavilion 3:45pm - 5:00pm FEATURED CLOSING KEYNOTE: MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON: SURVIVOR SHARES HIS STORY Carolina Ballroom C Larry Snodgrass Presented by: Larry Snodgrass, Survivor & Spokesperson for US Airways Flight 1549 (Hudson River, January 2009) Dicussion: Larry Snodgrass is a survivor and spokesperson for US Airways flight number 1549 that crashed in the Hudson River in New York City on January 15, 2009 – the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Life now takes on a special meaning for Larry and his newly enlarged family of 154 new members since that flight. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it. In addition, how do you judge if you are using the proper measures, and how do you really know what success looks like? The solution is threefold: • Interrogate your stakeholders to determine what matters to them • Develop metrics to measure what matters • Use this data to manage the business and improve processes IT must take a leadership role in enabling the business to be able to perform these measurements, both by putting systems in place to capture, analyze and report data and by executing this process with its own customers to provide a model for the rest of the business. In addition, benchmarking must be performed to determine how competitive IT and the overall business truly are. How do we know if our organizations are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible? How do we identify and prioritize process improvement opportunities? How do we compare operationally to our peers and competitors? Performance measurement can provide the answers. Data is coming at organizations in larger volumes, at higher velocities, and from more sources than ever before. This data can be an enabler or a disrupter of operations so it must be managed properly. The City of Fayetteville has embarked upon a journey to implement a robust performance measurement system that will enable it to transform from a middle-of-the-pack operation to a high performing organization. This presentation outlines the steps taken so far on that journey with tips for success and stumbling blocks to avoid. 12:00pm - 12:45pm LUNCH BUFFET & SIMposium PRESENTATION Carolina Ballroom C Presented by: Marc Di Francisco, President & CEO, Premier Event Management Jeffrey Stovall, CIO, City of Charlotte Marc Di Francisco 12:45pm - 2:00pm Carolina Ballroom C Jeffrey Stovall CLOSING KEYNOTE: SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE: ORGANIZATIONAL CURRENCIES IN THE NEW KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY Presented by: Ken Russell, PhD., Executive Director, WSU’s Applied Technology Acceleration Institute | Former Charlotte SIM President Ken Discussion: Social Knowledge will give you two kinds of insights: knowledge of your Russell, PhD. community and knowledge about your community. The first is important because it will help you find and develop expertise. The second is important because it will help you wield influence. Effective executives need both and this presentation (and the book) tells the audience how. 2:00pm - 2:30pm DESSERT, REFRESHMENTS, AND PRIZE DRAWINGS - Networking Pavilion Please give us your feedback on the Charlotte CIO Forum at www.premiercio.com/survey/charlotte WWW.PREMIERCIO.COM | 9 EXECUTIVE ADVISORY ADVISORY COUNCIL 10 | Jeffrey Stovall CIO City of Charlotte Jack Rech Sr. Director, IS National Gypsum Co.
