MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
How does the Notre Dame community describe excellence?
I am pleased to share this combined issue of Visions and the 2013-2014 Annual
Report of Gifts with you. The magazine portion highlights the academic rigor,
community engagement, and spiritual depth that continue to define our tradition
of educational excellence. The report testifies to the generosity of so many
members of our community, who support our mission and core values. Together,
they tell the story of how the Academy honors the past, celebrates the present, and
secures the future in the pioneering spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
How does Notre Dame describe excellence? Our students excel in academic,
artistic, and athletic achievements. Our alumnae continue to lead and achieve
(see article on Margaret [Meg] Kane ’99, this year’s Notre Dame Award recipient,
on page 12). It is this legacy and dynamic learning environment that the gifts
described in the Annual Report support.

The “Our Time to Inspire” campaign seeks to ensure Notre Dame’s reputation
as a premier Catholic academy for young women by providing an enhanced,
innovative, and dynamic learning environment. The transformation is underway.

OUR Mission
The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, a Catholic, independent,
college preparatory school, commits itself to the education of young
women of grades 6 through 12 for responsible living in a global society.
The Academy, rooted in the faith tradition of the Catholic Church,
and the charism of Saint Julie Billiart, provides its students with a
challenging academic curriculum within a rich spiritual community in
order to
• inspire them to live the prophetic nature of the gospel with a passion
for justice and love for the poor,
• enable them to develop the skills and desire necessary for lifelong

Annual Gesu Picnic

National Merit Recognition
Notre Dame is pleased to announce
that four seniors were named National
Merit Semifinalists in the 2014 National
Merit Scholarship Competition: Lindsay
Michel, Jennifer Zack, Elise Higgins,
and Gabriella Carlini (pictured l-r above
with President Dr. Judith A. Dwyer [left]
and Principal Eileen Wilkinson). The
students will advance in the competition
for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships
worth about $33 million, which will
be offered next spring. Dr. Dwyer
praises the students for this wonderful
achievement. “Notre Dame commits
itself to quality, and our National Merit
Semifinalists testify to that commitment.
We are very proud of our students
and their accomplishments.” Principal
Wilkinson agrees. “This is our time to
inspire at Notre Dame, yet it is these
students who provide inspiration to us.”
Fields of Dreams
The entire front of our campus continues
to be transformed with our new state-ofthe-art turf fields and athletic facilities.
An official opening and celebration of
the entire project will occur in spring
2015. At this time, we continue to engage
in important fundraising efforts to help
finance these critical improvements to
our campus. We are very proud of all
our student-athletes and encourage you
to support our efforts to provide them
with state-of-the-art facilities. For more

Mother Daughter Picnic
On September 12, Notre Dame held its
annual Mother Daughter Picnic. The
weather was perfect for the celebration of
the special relationship between mothers
and daughters. The day began with
mass followed by a picnic on the campus
grounds.

dads and their daughters, the event
celebrates the special relationship and big
impact fathers have on their daughter’s
development into a strong, confident
woman.
Students Attend
Congressman Meehan’s
1st Leadership Summit
Fifteen juniors from Notre Dame
participated in Congressman Patrick
Meehan’s 1st Leadership Summit
at Marple Newtown High School
on October 9. These students were
recognized for their current leadership
or potential for leadership in our school
community. Middle School
Leadership Conference
The Middle School Student Council
attended the first Middle School
Leadership Conference hosted by
Germantown Academy. In October, the
girls attended workshops on both selfawareness and communication followed
by a teamwork activity. After lunch the
girls spent time with their own school on
a planning committee. The moderators
were equally engaged in a leadership
workshop run by Gap International.
Tennis
The High School Varsity Tennis
team finished with an overall record
of 12-2, which is their best finish,
placing them 4th in the InterAc
Championships. Grace Leasure
placed 3rd in the 1st singles division;
Meredith Hughes placed 4th in the
2nd singles division; and Anne Marie
Crinnion placed 1st in the 3rd singles
division.
Volleyball
The High School Volleyball team had
an overall record of 17-4 (a league
record of 7-1) and ended the season by
winning the InterAc League title and
the PAISAA tournament title.
Field Hockey
The Middle School Varsity Field
Hockey team finished the regular
season going undefeated with a
14-0 record and won the Catholic
Academies regular season title, as well
as the playoff championship.
The High School JV B Field Hockey
team completed their season with a
record of 10-0-1.
Welcome
The Athletic Department has hired
two new Varsity High School lacrosse
coaches: Xan Weitzel has been named
the head coach and Maura Cullen
is the assistant varsity coach. Both
coaches were Division 1 lacrosse
players at Boston University and
Drexel University respectively, and
have club coaching experience. Xan
was an assistant coach at Villanova
University for the women’s lacrosse
team for four years. Maura is coowner of Motion Lacrosse in Wayne,
PA. We welcome them to our Notre
Dame community.
Entering its fifth decade, the annual
Gesu School picnic was held on Saturday,
October 4. More than 150 middle school
and high school students were paired with
kindergarten through third grade Gesu
students to enjoy sporting activities, arts
and craft projects, games, face painting,
and a moon bounce. This year’s theme,
“Gesu Goes to Oz,” transformed the
school into the magical world of Oz with
students dressed in theme costumes. The
Academy’s students, who plan, produce,
and staff the day, chose the Oz theme to
align with the school’s fall student musical,
The Wizard of Oz. Parents, faculty, and
friends of Notre Dame donated healthy
food selections for the children to enjoy.
Liberty Medal
Thanks to members of the Notre Dame
community, seventeen Notre Dame
students attended the Liberty Medal
Ceremony on Tuesday, October 21,
honoring Malala Yousafzai, the 2014
Nobel Peace Prize winner. Malala spoke
about her campaign to make education
available to girls around the world despite
tremendous personal risks.

Another chapter in Notre Dame’s history
unfolded on October 3 with the inauguration of
Dr. Judith A. Dwyer as the Academy’s fourth
President.

culture of authenticity, achievement, and
affirmation. We commit to an environment
that encourages our students to be
themselves, to set no limit to their dreams.
To them we say, ‘Be all that you can be.’”

Trustees, faculty, and staff attended an
inaugural reception on Thursday, October 2.
Students starring in the school musical,
The Wizard of Oz, gave a short performance
to those gathered.
The inauguration of Dr. Judith A. Dwyer
as the school’s fourth president and chief
executive officer was held Friday, October 3.
Board of Trustee members, Sisters of Notre
Dame, distinguished guests, community
leaders, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, and
students were in attendance.
The inaugural activities featured welcoming
remarks from Sister Nancy Bonshock, SND,
the Presidential Medallion presentation and
investiture awarding by Mary Ellen Maggitti,
chair of the Board of Trustees, performances
by the school’s Women’s Chorale, and a
keynote address from The Rev. Peter M.
Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D., president of
Villanova University.
“There is excitement in the air today as our
community inaugurates Dr. Dwyer,” said
Mary Ellen Maggitti. “Her substantial prior
experience and superior qualifications have
already generated positive momentum at
Notre Dame. We look forward to solidifying
the Academy’s commitment to excellence in
education under her leadership.”
Dr. Dwyer is excited about moving the
Academy’s vision forward. “Leadership
will always emerge within our Notre Dame
community. We foster a culture of authenticity,
achievement, and affirmation. We commit to
an environment that encourages our students
to be themselves, to set no limit to their
dreams. To them we say, ‘Be all that you
can be.’”
Dr. Dwyer began her tenure on July 1.
The
Mansion
Rich History, Bright Future

How fitting it is that such a stately country home should be a
second “home” for generations of young women of Notre Dame
— past, present, and those yet to come.
No building has come to define the
Notre Dame campus more than our
beloved Mansion. Its iconic façade is
known to all who pass by, and it is a
structure of undisputed architectural
beauty and historic significance. More
importantly, for generations of Notre
Dame alumnae, The Mansion has been
a defining part of their school and
personal lives. Even the official name,
Alumnae Hall, reflects the idea that The
Mansion is profoundly dear to those
who have studied in its halls. Here is a
brief history of the building.
In 1893 Lincoln Godfrey, a financier
and director of the Pennsylvania
Railroad, commissioned Theophilus
Parsons Chandler to design a house. At
the time, Chandler was the founder and
chair of the Architecture Department at
the University of Pennsylvania, and today
he is widely recognized as the preeminent
Philadelphia architect of the late 19th
century. The blue stone country house,
which Mr. Godfrey called “Hillsover,”
was completed in 1895 in the Gothic
Revival style and, as one uncharitable
critic put it, “[is] a massive and mediocre
example of Gothic Revival.” Its façade
was simpler than what we see today, with
six stone dormers, a two-story portecochère (see photo below), and an interior
that was far less ornate.
When Clarence Geist bought the
property in 1926 for the sum of $1.5
million, both the house and the grounds
had fallen into a rather sorry state of
disrepair. The new owner planned a
complete makeover of the entire estate.
At the helm of the project was Dr. Paul
Philippe Cret, a professor of architecture
at Penn, who was the chief architect
of the Delaware River Bridge (now
called the Benjamin Franklin Bridge),
the Rodin Museum, and the Barnes
Foundation in Merion, as well as many
other buildings of note across the nation.
Much of The Mansion that we see today
reflects Professor Cret’s designs, but the
massive iron front doors are the work
of the equally celebrated blacksmith,
Samuel Yellin, who both designed and
produced them.
Mr. Geist, his wife (Florence), and
their three daughters (Eloise, Elizabeth,
and Mary Golden), enjoyed only
twelve years on the property. Upon her
husband’s death in 1938, Mrs. Geist no
longer wanted to live in the house, but
she continued to have the estate fully
staffed until 1943, when she sold it to the
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for the
charitable price of $75,000.

The first nuns moved in on January 3
and 4, 1944. From then until the spring
of 2006, 142 Sisters of Notre Dame have
lived in community in The Mansion.
Although current students and more
recent alumnae have not experienced the
presence of resident Sisters, those with
longer memories will recall the chance
meetings, the late pick-ups, the aromas
of dinner, and the nurturing, home-like
environment that the Sisters provided.
It is difficult to catalogue all of the
various configurations of The Mansion
over the years, and Notre Dame students
of different generations will have greatly
divergent memories. The ballroom was
converted to a chapel, and bedrooms
and the grand second floor sitting
room became classrooms. Indeed, there
was a time when classes were held on
every story, from the basement to the
third floor. There was a time when
The Mansion had a working elevator.
There was a time when students were
forbidden to use the Grand Staircase.
There was a time (before the Honor
Code) when demerits were posted in the
back stairway. There was a time when
plays and musicals were performed on
the terrace. There was a time when the
dining room was the school dining room,
and the library was the school library.
Today, The Mansion is home to the
Foreign Language Department, and the
Library (a.k.a. the Religion Center, a.k.a.
the English Center, a.k.a. Room 11A) is
currently used for AP English Literature
and AP Art History. The north wing,
formerly the cooks’ quarters and later
part of the convent, is home to our
Business Office, and the school Archives
are housed on the third floor.
Many of The Mansion’s hidden
treasures remain. There are still secret
cabinets in the library office and a cedar
closet in the attic, and a beautiful black
and white marble floor is concealed
beneath the carpeting in the Solarium.
Although the particular uses of
Alumnae Hall have changed over
time and will continue to evolve, The
Mansion will always be the signature
building of the campus, will always be
an academic building, and will always
stand as the one place that unites our
community “’neath the gold and blue.”
Since 1944, every Notre Dame girl has
sat in the chapel and walked through
the Great Hall. They have learned and
laughed, danced and dined, and many
have even slept in The Mansion.
Back in 1926, Clarence Geist named
his estate Launfal after James Russell
Lowell’s narrative poem, The Vision of Sir
Launfal. Inscribed above the lintel of the
terrace door is the following quatrain:
Not what we give, but what we share,
For the gift without the giver is bare;
Who gives himself with his alms feeds
three,
Himself, his hungering neighbor, and
me.
These lines, which many Notre Dame
alumnae recall having to memorize,
capture much of the spirit of the building
— ideas of hospitality and community, of
sharing and service, and of the Christian
faith that guides our actions. How
fitting it is that such a stately country
home should be a second “home” for
generations of young women of Notre
Dame — past, present, and those yet to
come.

Notre Dame Award Presented to Meg Kane ’99
The Notre Dame Award is presented annually to an alumna whose ongoing commitment
to the Academy is exemplary in scope, enthusiasm, and diligence. Acknowledging the value
of a Notre Dame education, she offers her time, energy, and resources to ensure the future of
the Academy and expand its influence.
Below is a portion of Meg’s speech from the award ceremony on October 18.
Margaret (Meg) Anne Kane ’99
With wide-ranging experience
in consumer packaged goods,
education, cultural arts, luxury
brands, health care, and non-profit
associations, Meg brings a distinct
perspective and media relationships
to her role as vice president at
Brian Communications. Prior to
joining Brian in 2010, Meg spent
four years at Vault Communications
managing media relations efforts
for the National Pest Management
Association, as well as day-today public relations and brand
management for Tasty Baking
Company (Tastykake). Before that,
Meg was the director of public
relations for Mount Saint Joseph
Academy. Today, she is helping to lead the
strategic communications efforts
for the World Meeting of Families
—Philadelphia 2015, which is Pope
Francis’s first visit to the United
States.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts
Degree from La Salle University
(2003) as well as a master’s degree
in strategic communication, crisis
communications and political
rhetoric from the University of
Maryland (2005). Elected to
the La Salle University Alumni
Association Board of Directors in
2004, she served as its president
from 2009-2011. In October 2012,
Meg was appointed to the La Salle
University Board of Trustees for a
five-year term and to the Board of
Trustees for La Salle Academy in
February 2013. She also serves on
the Development/Communications
Committee for Fred’s Footsteps, a
Philadelphia-based non-profit that
provides interim funds for otherwise
financially stable families to help
them handle the fiscal burden of a
child’s illness or traumatic injury.
I am very grateful to all the members of the Class of 1999 for being here with me this
evening. Our class has always had a special bond and no matter where our lives have taken
us, I have always found that Notre Dame has remained a constant touch point.
I am also grateful to my family for being here with me this evening. My family played,
perhaps, the most important part in my Notre Dame experience. They said, “Yes,” when I
told them—in all of my 14-year-old brashness—that I was going to Notre Dame for high
school. When you live 9 ½ minutes from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, and you’re not only
holding one of its coveted 140 acceptances but also graduating from its number one “feeder”
school in the region, that’s not exactly the easiest sell.
There aren’t many decisions you make at 14 that make your life, but this decision made
mine. Ultimately, my parents knew that this special place was exactly where I belonged—and
exactly where I would become the woman I am today. I wish I could say that my power of
persuasion made all of the difference. But I was immensely lucky that my parents met one
important person during their tours in the autumn of 1994—Sister Regina Finnegan. I know
that it was Sister Regina’s encouraging words of “Don’t worry! She’ll do great,” that gave my
parents the courage to let me go to Notre Dame not knowing a single soul. So, I thank you
for saying “yes” and for all of the sacrifices that made it work.
After reading The Philadelphia Inquirer’s incredible profile of Dr. Trish Henwood’s (’98)
work and travels to Liberia to combat the Ebola pandemic in Western Africa, the line in the
story that leapt off the page for me was Mr. Henwood’s response to Trish telling him she was
going to Liberia, “This is what you’re made for.”
Sister Regina would have told her—or any of us—exactly the same.
“This is what you’re made for…” These are the words upon which a Notre Dame
education… a Notre Dame experience… a Notre Dame life are built. And whether you
celebrate your 60th Reunion today or your 5th Reunion, it is this place and these four years,
which helped each of us to learn “what we’re made for.”
And what I have always loved most about Notre Dame is that “what we’re made for…”
need not be just one thing; we can be CEOs of major corporations and CEOs of busy
households. We can be doctors who rush to the places in the world where people need us,
and doctors who rush out the back door with Neosporin and Band-Aids when a child falls
off a two-wheeler for the first time. We can be volunteers who tackle homelessness, poverty,
education, and hunger, and we can be volunteers for our local PTAs.
“What we’re made for…” is rooted in the women we learned to be in the hallowed halls of
The Mansion and St. Julie Hall. But how we manifest that can be ever-changing and everevolving. “What we’re made for…” will ultimately shine through in all of our life’s decisions.
Right now, I am made to help bring Pope Francis to Philadelphia. I am made to be “Fun
Aunt Meg” who gifts loud toys to little children and apologizes to their mothers with wine. I
am made to serve La Salle University at the time of greatest turmoil, challenge, and opportunity
in its 151-year history. I am made to serve La Salle Academy because Sister Jeanne McGowan
doesn’t take no for an answer. And I am made to help offer support and guidance to my Notre
Dame classmate, Christine DiBona, in raising awareness of her non-profit, Fred’s Footsteps.
“What we’re made for” doesn’t change; how we show it does. That’s what makes our lives
so rich. That’s what Notre Dame teaches us. And it’s the legacy we carry with us every day in
all that we do. Thank you for this very great honor.
New Faces at Notre Dame
Paige LeGrand, New Director of Advancement
The Academy has named Paige LeGrand as its new Director of Advancement. In this
role, Paige assumes responsibility for fundraising and development, as well as overseeing
alumnae initiatives. She brings extensive experience to this position at both educational and
profit institutions, spearheading numerous fundraising campaigns and coordinating strategic
planning.
Recently, Paige served as Director of Development at The Episcopal Academy, where
she successfully oversaw a $100 million capital campaign to enable the historic campus
move from Merion to its new location on 123 acres in Newtown Square. She spearheaded
numerous successful multi-million dollar solicitations, organized high-level donor
recognition events, oversaw the development of campaign marketing and communication
materials, and managed three critical volunteer communities. In addition to campaign
activities, Paige played a key role in The Episcopal Academy’s strategic planning process,
working closely with the Board of Trustees and all Academy constituents.
Paige holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Cornell University and an
undergraduate degree in Economics from Hamilton College, with a major in Economics,
cum laude. Paige also brings investment experience to this position, having most recently served as an Investment Officer at Hirtle,
Callaghan and Co.
“I am thrilled to join the Academy of Notre Dame community,” says Paige. “I have long been aware of the school’s strong
academic program, excellent faculty, and close-knit community. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Dwyer and other
leaders at the school to significantly enhance our alumnae and development programming.”
Paige will play a strategic role in developing the Academy’s comprehensive campaign, “Our Time to Inspire.”
Trish Shea, New Director of Marketing and Communications
This fall, Trish Shea was appointed the Academy’s new Director of Marketing and
Communications.
Trish brings an extensive background to this position, most recently serving as the
Director of Strategic Communications at Penn State Great Valley. There she developed and
implemented a cohesive communications strategy for the entire campus, with a special focus
on admissions and advancement opportunities, producing communication tools across all
print and digital platforms.
“Growing up on the Main Line and having close friends attend Notre Dame, I always
knew of the school’s academic excellence and community engagement,” says Trish. “I am
happy to be part of this energetic and enthusiastic community.”
Prior to Penn State, Trish served as Director of Development Communications for the
Thomas Jefferson University Health System, where she integrated a successful brand
awareness campaign throughout the medical college, hospital and clinical outreach
programs.
Trish started her career as creative designer, writer and editor at R&B Enterprises and
Arthur Anderson and Co., eventually establishing her own company, Start2Finish Graphics, with a client base focused on nonprofit
and educational institutions, including Temple University Ambler, University of Pennsylvania Health System, Holy Ghost
Preparatory School, Villa Joseph Marie High School, and The Philadelphia Academies.
Recently, Trish completed a Master of Arts in Publishing degree from Rosemont College; she holds a Bachelor of Arts in
Communications/Journalism from Saint Joseph’s University. She is certified in Public Relations from the Charles Morris Price
School of Advertising and Journalism and in Leadership Development from Penn State.

Christine Doherty Kondra and
her sister, Erin Doherty Kreszl ’99,
founded The Bee Foundation, based in
Philadelphia, in honor of their twentyseven-year-old cousin, Jennifer Sedney,
who passed away Christmas 2013 due
to a brain aneurysm. The foundation’s
mission is to reduce the number of
deaths caused by brain aneurysms
through awareness, research, and
education. Dr. Patricia Henwood ’98 is
the foundation’s Chief Medical Officer
and on the Board of Directors.

Nora Burkey is currently working with
Planting Hope located in San Ramon,
Nicaragua, that works with the children
of migrant coffee laborers. The summer
months in Nicaragua coincide with the
coffee harvest, which is a season parents
rely on for extra income. Because
children are not attending school during
the summer, they often must work with
their parents each day picking coffee.
As an alternative to working, Planting
Hope offers these children educational
and fun activities similar to summer
camp. Nora will direct and develop this
program. Meanwhile, she has started
her own 501(c)(3) called “The Chain,”
a non-profit that helps companies
contribute to sustainable development
in the coffee lands. She is connecting
companies and individuals to projects
they can directly support, such as
programs for women, children, health,
education, and more.

Jackie Jesko is a TV news producer at
ABC Nightline, where she has worked
since graduating from NYU in 2010.
She travels the world reporting on a
wide variety of subjects, ranging from
in-depth investigations to lighthearted
adventure stories. Recently, she was part
of the ABC News team that won the
prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award
for excellence in journalism.

Elizabeth
Reeves spent
two weeks this
past summer
in Narni, Italy,
working on a
production of
Mozart’s opera
Don Giovanni,
in which she
played the role
of Zerlina. The production was a part
of the Narnia Festival and took place
in the town’s 19th-century Teatro
Comunale. The opera was directed
by Paolo Baiocco and conducted by
Lorenzo Porzio. She previously worked
in Italy as a part of the Siena Music
Festival, where Elizabeth was Miss
Jessel in The Turn of the Screw. She also
sings frequently in the United States,
most notably in 2012 as a member
of the Janiec Opera Company at the
Brevard Music Festival, where she
sang the role of Sister Constance in
Dialogues of the Carmelites. Elizabeth is
a mezzo-soprano and is currently living
in London, where she has begun her
graduate studies at the Royal College
of Music under the tutelage of soprano
Janis Kelly.

Becca Davis married Douglas Campbell
on June 21 at her parent’s home in
Berwyn, PA.
Kathryn Carlisle studied both
mathematics and psychology at Boston
College, and upon graduation in May
2014, moved to New York City. She is
involved in a unique rotational program
sponsored by the Direct Marketing
Association in which she receives
experience at two different marketing
companies. Kathryn completed her
first six-month rotation at Paradysz/
PM Digital, a marketing agency in the
financial district, where she was part
of the advisory services team focusing
on a website redesign and integration
project for KPMG. Her second rotation
is at Gerber Life Insurance in White
Plains, NY, where she is working with
the adult policies team to launch a new
product.

Molly Petersen graduated from Saint
Joseph’s University in May 2014 with
a major in marketing and minor in
communications. She is presently
working in the marketing department
at GMH Associates, a Newtown Square
firm, which specializes in commercial
real estate development.
Kyle Rasmussen graduated with a
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering from Penn State University.
She works for Cummins, a global
company that designs, manufactures,
distributes, and services engines and
related products. In July, she began
working as a service engineer in their
Minneapolis location.
Alexandria Stensland made the 2014
West Second Team All-American for
Ice Hockey. Alex plays for Lake Forest
College.

Emily Poche received a 2014
Mountaintop Fellowship in sustainable
development research, working with
sustainable aquaponics. Alongside a
team of undergraduate students, she
promotes local eating, sustainable
agribusiness, and world hunger
alleviation. The design for her group’s
aquaponic tank is being experimentally
implemented through the Peace Corps
in rural Armenia.
Freshman attack Nora McCallion
earned A-10 All-Rookie this year at
Saint Joseph’s University. Nora made
her mark in her first collegiate season
as SJU’s top freshman in points, goals,
assists, shots, shot percentage, shots on
goal, and free-position goals. She led
the Hawks with 30 draw controls and
ranked third overall in points (30) and
goals (19).

of Gifts, which showcases the extraordinary generosity
of our school community. More than 1,300 donors
supported our esteemed faculty, facilities, and programs
offering the finest Catholic education for young women
in the region.
Our Annual Fund theme is “Making Connections.”
How our students connect to each other, their teachers,
coaches, mentors, and their faith is a cornerstone of
a Notre Dame education and reflects our mission
to inspire young women to excel academically and
spiritually in our ever-changing world.
Gifts to the Annual Fund support the operating budget
and offset the 15% gap between the tuition revenue
and the actual cost of educating each student. Your
contributions were used to provide enhancements
to our campus and classrooms; improvements in
technology; and ongoing support of our financial aid
and scholarship programs. We continue to see healthy increases in our endowment and leadership
level contributions from you, our generous parents, alumnae, and friends. I am most grateful for
both your trust in our leadership and your investment in the Academy.
The “Our Time to Inspire” campaign is well underway as is witnessed with the installation
of new athletic fields and renovations to Launfal. This comprehensive capital campaign will
transform our campus into a state-of-the-art facility that will provide our current students and
future generations with the absolute best in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, and in the
community.

PENNSYLVANIA TAX CREDITS
The Academy of Notre Dame salutes Michael and
Lisa Irvine P’17 for their generous support of student
scholarships through the Pennsylvania Educational
Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.
Last year, Michael and Lisa participated in EITC through
their company, M.F. Irvine and Associates, when they
were new parents. We appreciate their commitment and
generous support.
At Notre Dame, we like to say that the EITC and OSTC
(the new Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit) are our
win-win programs, because through them, Notre Dame’s
eligible students receive financial aid while participating
businesses gain a significant tax break—up to 90% of the
value of their donation. It’s a win-win all around.
Since 2004, when Notre Dame first started accepting donations through EITC, 53 businesses have contributed over
$1.8 million in financial assistance to deserving students. These contributions have played a critical role in allowing the
Academy to fulfill its mission and literally changed the lives of the students who have benefitted.

Meet EVAN THOMAS
from the Arts Department
I teach at Notre Dame because
it is such a warm and welcoming
environment, surging with creativity.
As an artist, I cannot help but
find inspiration in the endless
opportunities offered to our students.
The young women of Notre Dame are
encouraged to explore a diverse range
of interests, and are poised to be
lifelong learners.
As a faculty member, I support the
mission of the school by ensuring
that my students are given the tools
that they need to thrive off campus.
I structure my art curriculum with a
combination of art history, technique,
and contemporary awareness. The
ultimate goal is to foster a nurturing
environment where students learn to
explore and to approach problems
as artists—with original solutions and
real-life connections. My art classes
empower students and encourage
them to develop creative solutions
to problems that have more than one
answer.
Evan Thomas is a visual artist,
photographer, and educator from
Chester County, PA. He earned
his undergraduate degree in
art education from Kutztown
University, and a master’s degree
from Boston University. Evan is

G.I.R.L. With a Mission
Since my first year as a sixth grader,
Notre Dame has instilled in me a love
for the poor. Late in my junior year, I
had a strong desire to help the world
in underprivileged places. I came upon
a student travel program, “Global
Leadership Adventures,” which led me
to a public health service initiative in the
Volta region of Ghana.
One widespread challenge facing
African communities is a lack of
adequate sanitizing facilities, as well as
nutritious food for children. This service
project combated both. Along with a
group of students, I constructed ecocompost toilets for village families to
help improve health conditions, as well
as generate high-quality fertilizer to
increase crop yields.
While in Ghana, we learned about other
factors that hinder Ghanaians. One
factor that specifically concerned me
was the lack of education a girl receives.
While boys and girls have equal rights in
education, girls reach a certain age and
begin to menstruate and do not have
necessary sanitary items. Unfortunately,
this inhibits their education and lives.
I figured out a way to address the
unfortunate situations of young girls in
Ghana. I called my initiative “G.I.R.L.”
(Ghana Improving Rights for Learning)
and, along with other all-girl schools,
started a feminine products drive.
The students collected new pads and
underwear packages, which will be
shipped to an NGO, Village Exchange
International, who will then distribute
our collection. We plan to collect
more than 1,000 pads and underwear
packages to be delivered to the Ghana
girls in summer 2015. Hopefully, the
project will continue helping an area of
the world that needs so much.

Notre Dame Annual Fund
The Notre Dame Annual Fund provides support for the current operating budget and helps provide critical funds for the Academy’s
initiatives. Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure outstanding facilities, curricular advances in all disciplines, campus enhancements,
scholarships, financial aid, and faculty development.
“Our Time to Inspire” Campaign
The “Our Time to Inspire” campaign is a multi-year, comprehensive campaign to improve Notre Dame’s facilities.
Endowment
Gifts to Notre Dame’s Endowment help to ensure the long-term financial health of the school by generating income that supplements the
operating budget. Endowed funds, such as scholarship funds, may be created at various levels with criteria specified by the donor. They are
managed according to investment policies established by the Academy’s Board of Trustees.
Planned gifts, such as bequests, play an important role in increasing Notre Dame’s endowment as well. Designed to enhance the donors’
estate planning, tax planning, investment objectives and retirement needs, they help to ensure the future of the Academy and are vital to its
ability to fulfill its educational mission.
Tributes
Gifts in honor of or in memory of an individual are a special remembrance and deeply appreciated by the Academy.
Gifts-in-Kind
Notre Dame gratefully accepts gifts of supplies, books and equipment. Special tax deductions are available.
