Lights, Camera, Action! Have you ever
heard of the First Academy Awards?!
Of course not, its the first time ever in
history! Held in the Blossom Room of
the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Cali‐
fornia (far from the glare of publicity).
is ursday, May 16, 1929, honoring
movies released from August 1, 1927 –
August 1, 1928. It was a very confiden‐
tial and secluded event, (crammed with
speeches!) with close to 270 people as
guests. Tickets for the guest were priced
at $ 5 a n d t h e s h ow l a s te d 1 5
minutes.e opening Oscar ceremony
included 1 categories, besides 2 special
tributes. ese awards were intended to
greatly respect the wonderful people ac‐
countable for cinematic accomplish‐
ments in this year and last year (1927
and 1928).e talented actor Douglas
Fairbanks hosted the ceremony as well
as and director William C. de Mille.
Douglas Fairbanks Sr. was selected as
the foremost president of the Academy.
Douglas jokes "e idea behind the
founding of the awards was to give
credits to the brilliant actors of the
movie industry. Its also mainly just a
get together for not only to honor those
great actors, but a chance to show off
Some of the honorable winners of the
night: Best Actor was swept away by
Swiss-born German tragedian Emil
Jannings (for 'e Last Command' and
'e Way of All Flesh'). e actor had to
get back to Europe prior to the ceremo‐
ny, so he appealed to the Academy to
give him the award before time. His de‐
mand was acknowledged, making his
Oscar statuette the very first Academy
Award to be ever handed. e award for
Best Actress went to Janet Gaynor, for
'Seventh Heaven', 'Street Angel' and
'Sunrise'. ere were two awards in Di‐
rection, for Dramatic Picture and
Comedic Picture, bagged by Frank
Borzage and Lewis Milestone, corre‐
spondingly.
e event was such a success! Its quite
possible that it might be sticking
around for a while, maybe even for cen‐
turies.
“I found that the best way to handle
filmmakers was to hang medals all over
them…If I got them cups and awards
they’d kill them to produce what I want‐
ed. at’s why the Academy Award was
created”
