One of the projects of the Alumni
Association in 1990 was to pro

Anatolia. Twenty-two uniforms,
65 notebooks and various class
room items for children were
sent to Geventepe Primary
School in the Karayazı province
of Erzurum. It was satisfying to
learn from the letter of school
teacher Ali Düzgün, that such a
small contribution has made a
big effect on the morale of the
children. The Alumni Associa
tion plans to continue this activity
with more vigor in 1991.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS
On November 17, Ankara based graduates
visited the Arnavutkoy campus. Most of them had
not
been there since graduation! However, the
Alumni Association and Dorothy Iz made
everyone feel at home.
It was only a day trip. The group arrived on
campus at around 4 pm.. After having tea they
visited the dormitories and new buildings. They
were happy to see the new theater since the old
one had been demolished. The Ankara alumni
appreciated the hospitality extended by the
Alumni Association and Mr. Harry Dawe who
also met with the guests and made them feel at
home.
The last activity of the day was dinner at Bizim
Tepe. At the stroke of midnight the Ankara alumni
started the trip back home, tired due to the long
one day trip but satisfied and happy.

G G - Kolejde o k u m a n ı n y a ş a m ı
na f a y d a l a r ı nelerdir?
M Y - 1955-58 yıllarını düşünecek
olursak Robert Kolej dünyaya, batı
ya açılan güneşli bir pencere idi.
Klasik Avrupa kökenli bir yaklaşı
mın tersine kişisel çaba ve gayrete

tim yeriydi ve bunda
tekti.
G G - Fotoğrafçılığa
nasıl merak s a l d ı n ?
MY - Fotoğraf çek
meye orta okulda iken
bir Kodak kutu makine
ile başladım.
Kısa bir süre sonra
tüm film banyosu ve
baskı işlerini kendim
yapar oldum. 1950'li
yılları
hatırlayacak
olursak, teknik imkan
ların eksikliğine kendi
imalatım bazı özel teç
hizatla çözümler geti
rebilmem, benim için çok büyük
doyum kaynağı olmuştur. Kolejde
fotoğraf kulübü bana teknik olanak
ları daha iyi öğrenme ve öğretme
imkanı yarattı. Fotoğraf tekniğimi
ve estetik anlayışımı geliştirmeme
olanak sağladı.
G G - F o t o ğ r a f ç e k i m i n i n sana

sayıda öğrenci

dım.
GG - Hala f o t o ğ r a f ç ı l ı k l a ilgileni
yor musun?
MY - Ercüment Atabay bana "sen
sonunda fotoğrafçı olacaksın" derdi.
Bu çok sevdiğim hocamın dediği ol
madı ama fotoğrafçılıktan kopamadım. Uzun bir durgunluk d ö n e m i n
den sonra birkaç yıldan beri yeniden
fotoğraf
çekmeye
başladım.
Ağırlıklı ilgi alanım olan insan
ve doğa çalışmalarına devam
ediyorum. Ancak, 1950'lerin yu
muşak, romantik mercek sistem
lerini bazen aramıyorum desem
yalan olur. B u g ü n değil ama bel
ki beş on yıl sonra sayın Atabay'ı
yalancı çıkarmayabili

GG - O y ı l l a r d a n kal

MY - En unutamadığım
olay ikinci kişisel fotoğ

sam Aliye Berger çalış

duğum olaydır.

Record'un arka arkaya üç yıl foto

GG - Okuldaki d i ğ e r faaliyetle

STUDENTS
M a n y Roads
to Excellence
As Berna Buyukuncu (Orta III) swims her way
through record after record, groups of Lycee
students travel to gain experience in international
diplomacy and English teacher Diane Ozbal
spends an interesting year abroad teaching
a new set of students.
A
s they travel on their
respective paths to excellence, Berna B u y u kuncu is striving to
qualify for the 1992
Barcelona Olympics while Lycee students try to promote environmental
awareness through the Metropia program and English teacher Diane
O z b a l experiences a different set of
students who add a new dimension to
the meaning of excellence.
The mark of an excellent school
" B e i n g at RC gives you a chance to
travel on many of the roads to excellence" says Diane O z b a l . A n R C E n g lish teacher for many years, she went
to teach in the U . S . during the
1989/90 academic year, as part of a
teacher exchange program. This program involves teachers exchanging
posts for one year. O z b a l , during the
speech she gave for the opening of the
new school year, shared with us her
experiences of the past year.
ferent philosophy of education as
well as different ways of using students' time.
The students also surprised me.
E a c h day they came to school in torn
bluejeans, cut-off sweatshirts and
punky haircuts. W i t h a can of coke in
one hand and a l o l l y p o p in the other
they sat in class casually, feet propped
up on an extra chair. They certainly
didn't look like what I was used to
teaching!
But when class began I had no c o m -
plaints. Their behavior was exemplary, impeccable. I taught for a
whole year without ever having to
scold students during class or tell
them to be quiet. Students w i l l i n g l y
gave their full attention to the teacher
(I found that somewhat surprising),
and they also gave their full attention
to each other (and that I felt was truly
amazing). Class discussions were rewarding and exciting as students expressed their o w n ideas with passion
and conviction. Was this not the
characteristic of an excellent school?
Northfield-Mount Hermon School

U . S . and from 75 other countries. A l l
races and religions were represented.
The goal of the school was to have
the students learn from each other as
w e l l as from their teachers. I was continually stimulated by my students
and learned a great deal from them.
Students and teachers learning from
each other- isn't this the mark of an
excellent school?
Another surprise I had was that all
the students were required to work at
the school for one period each day.
They weren't paid for their efforts;

Chalfant, the
Director of K o ç Ö z e l
L i s e s i near Pendik, is a
"frequent resident" of Tur

his comfortable office over-looking
the rolling hills of the north. Later he
was to comment that there was noth
ing between his office and the North
Pole other than Sile, which of course
R C Q , WINTER 1991 21
gave way to gushing winds from the
north. This was to remind h i m of
Robert College. But he indicates that
K o ç L i s e s i is no way an "oriental
RC".
He admits that he always had a par
ticular interest in the M i d d l e East. He
first came to RC in 1955 and stayed
for the year. Then "his life changed"
and he left in 1956 to return in 1965
first to work with Sheldon Wise at the
Prep School and then from 1965 to
1971, to teach at the Academy in
Bebek becoming
the Head of the
Academy in 1970.
"In the summer of 1971, we
marched over to A r n a v u t k ö y , and
invaded" was the way he formulated
the merger o f R C and A C G . H e has
fascinating memories of the days of
the merger which he promised to nar
rate for some special 20th anniversary

issue of the R C Q .
He stayed on as the new Headmaster
of the new RC on the new campus for
six more years.
In 1977 M r . Chalfant left Istanbul
and went to Oman to initiate a school
project for Sultan Qaboos. That kept
him busy for another 9 years. Then as
he was working on a project for a tri
lingual school in Cyprus, he received
an invitation from the K o ç family to
develop and head the new Özel K o ç
Lisesi which is where we found him.
T h i r d time in Turkey... Was there
any particular reason why he tends to
come back to this part of the world? A
question like, " O f all places why Tur
key?" makes him chuckle. "There is
an A m e r i c a n proverb w h i c h says 'we
learn by going the way we have to go.'
I came to Turkey, left, and I was not
seriously considering a return, then
some definite signs pointed in this
direction. Over the years, I have
developed a true fondness for Turkey
- let's put it this w a y - 1 feel very c o m
fortable here and since Turkey has an
enormous potential in terms of its peo
ple, I find it a very rewarding place to
live and work."
What has changed since the first
visit?... Apparently a lot ... "Istanbul
was a city with a population under a
m i l l i o n when I first came. We had to
d o l m u ş to Bebek, then walk from
K ü ç ü k Bebek to the College Gate,
and up that hill. Since then there have
been truly remarkable changes."
The
educational
climate has
changed just as w e l l , along with the
students: He noticed "lots of differ
ence" between the students of his
early years here and the present ones
"The basic social and economic
changes have been such that we see a
totally different generation in Turkey
every seven years or so. I can remem
ber the difference for example when
TV became more or less universal in
Turkey after the O l y m p i c s (1974).
Students nowadays are in some way
less intellectual and more career
oriented, and they live with the reali
zation of what they have to do prior to
university exams. They want good
jobs, they want comfortable lives,
they are material-minded. Certainly
there has been an enormous exten
sion of a middle class, that is ambi
tious and upwardly mobile, and edu
cation is the mean to an end for
them.
The difference between B a ğ d a t
Caddesi and N i ş a n t a ş ı some twenty
years ago is also quite remarkable, I
think. I found the difference some
thing like the difference between a
L o s Angeles and a Boston. But it co
exists in a single city.
The student today is also more
R C Q , WINTER 1991 22
aware of the outside world and more
prepared to be judged by external
international standards. I think there
has always been some resentment
towards that in the past. There was the
right way of doing things, the wrong
way and the Turkish way. Then, to be
the best in Turkey was enough. H o w
you d i d , for example in European
football d i d not much matter. N o w
that is changing. There are new and
changing standards, w h i c h must be
accepted as realistic standards if Tur
key is to become an equal partner in a
new Europe, it must raise its sights."
Reflecting on his days at K o ç L i s e s i ,
M r . Chalfant says, "Education is still
obviously crucial and central to these
lives, and we have a particularly good
bunch of kids here, who have accom
plished some extraordinary things in
only three years. I am very pleased."
Future plans... "I plan to retire at the
end of this year from active head
mastering, but I don't intend to retire
from education. I would like to do
many things but not on a day to day
basis."
W o u l d he like to stay in this coun
try?... A brief pause... Then comes the
answer: " Y e s , I would like to. I would
like to continue working here..." and
adds, "If not here, certainly in this part
of the world." L o n g years spent here
do not facilitate parting...

Two Persona
Grata RC Alumni
Dr. Banu Onaral RC Yuk 73, and
Nedim Saban RC '86... Two dedicated
professionals of international acclaim, and both
graduates of Robert College.
A
l l R C A l u m n i are proud
of their association with
these two alumni. One is
Banu Onaral, a scientist
with numerous international awards
to her credit in the field of computer
application in engineering studies.
The other is N e d i m Saban, a young
stage director who in an exceptionally short time has achieved fame in
the world of theatre.
Success came naturally B a n u
Onaral's brilliant future was presaged
by her academic achievement during
her school years. After completing
her secondary education at Notre
Dame de Sion, Onaral entered Robert
College (Bosphorus University) in
1969 to study electrical engineering.
After being awarded her first-class
degree in 1973 she took her masters
degree, and then went to Pennsylvania University on a Fulbright scholarship and obtained her
doctorate in
1978.
Since then Dr. Onaral
has been a lecturer at
the Faculty of Electrical and Computer
Engineering
at
Drexel
University.
Onaral was president
of the world's largest
international conference of biomedical
engineering held on
November 1-4, 1990
in Philadelphia, by
the Institute of E l e c trical and Electronic
Engineering. This honor was further
recognition of this young scientist's
achievements. Banu Onaral was
selected four years ago as chairman of
this conference, which was attended
by around 1600 scientists. The mayor
of Philadelphia was so proud to see
his city host the major conference,
that he declared the
opening day of the
conference to be
Biomedical
Day.
Onaral, who is married with one child,
visits Turkey occasionally to attend
conferences
and
seminars.
Saban lives for
the theatre As a
c h i l d it was already
evident that N e d i m
Saban was destined
to make a career in theatre. He wrote
his first play at the age of 12, and this
was staged at the City Theatre in
1980.
His growing dramatic company
then began to perform interludes for a
children's theatre sponsored by a
Turkish bank. At the age of 15, he
decided it was time to go professional
and he founded the Be§ Kafadarlar
Company.
F r o m the age of 15 to 19 he combined his studies at Robert College
with a professional theatre career.
On the principle that theatre is for
everyone, and every child should
have the chance to go to the theatre,
the young Saban launched a street
theatre which performed in shanty
town neighborhoods, introducing
drama to audiences who had never
seen a play in their lives before.
After obtaining his degree in stage
direction from the Drama Department of N e w
Y o r k University.
Saban
became
one
of
three
directors to w i n a
scholarship from
among
1500
applicants.
He
was not only the
youngest director to w i n this
scholarship, but
the first foreigner
to do so.
Currently at the
age of 23, Saban
is
directing
"What the Butler
Saw"
by
Joe
Orton. This play
not only marks his comeback
to the theatre scene but what's
more, it has him directing one
of Turkey's best actors and a
fellow K o l e j l i , Haldun Dormen R C 49
Banu Onaral RC 73 and

Alumni Taking Initiative
On Environmental Issues
A local campaign was led by Serra Subasi A C G '64
to save Tuzla Lake, formerly a bird sanctuary.
I
n the news this summer, was
a local campaign to save
T u z l a lake, formerly a bird
sanctuary,
from
being
drained as a new housing develop
ment site. Residents of this seaside
resort rallied together under the lead
ership of Serra S u b a ş ı A C G '64, to
organise various events designed to
draw public attention to the issue. A
kite festival held in July attracted a
crowd of 1500 and 750 kites. Best of
a l l , it received wide coverage in the
media.
A committee setup to lobby for
the lake's conservation consists of
İ T Ü Dean İlhan K a y a n , Ö z k a n
Olcay, Celal E r o l , Şahika Ertan, A s a f
Ertan, T i m u ç i n K o c a t ü r k , E z e l
Yüksel and Serra Subaşı. The com
mittee got in touch with Istanbul U n i
versity and Bosphorus University
scientists, who came to T u z l a on
Sunday, August 26, 1990 to see the
site for themselves before formulat
ing a conservation project. Ş a h i k a
Ertan sought the assistance of other
academics who could make a contri
bution to the work, and a project team
was set up. The project is being
financed by Procter and Gamble's
Turkish subsidiary A l o M i n t a x .
Another event was the "Clean-up
Campaign" in August. Adults as w e l l
as children volunteered to spend sev
eral consecutive Sundays picking up
trash polluting the area around T u z l a
lake. Hard working organizers, most
notably L e y l a Pekcan A C G '61, were
aided by N u r Atabay A C G '5 8, a dedi
cated environmentalist who arranged
for the garbage pick up trucks.
Serra S u b a ş ı summarises the goals
of these clean-up activities for T u z l a
L a k e as follows:
1. A suitable location should be
provided instead of allowing trucks to
dump refuse, rubble and sewage
R C Q , WINTER 1991 28
around and into the lake.
2. The bed of the lake should be
dredged so as to reopen the channel
l i n k i n g the lake to the sea.This proj
ect should be undertaken within the
context of a reclamation project so as
to conserve the reed beds and other
natural features of the lake.
3. The entire peninsula, w h i c h is
famous for its mastic trees, should be
placed under the suspices of the M i n
istry of Forests.
4. The lake and its environs should
become a nature park...Housing
development in the area should be
stopped and the local shipbuilding
industry should be relocated....
Suba§i notes that they w i l l main
tain effots to raise funds for their proj
ect and give the issue as much public
ity in the media as possible.
She concludes that public aware
ness is a crucial factor where environ
mental issues are concerned."We
should not expect others to keep our
environment clean," she declares.
"Everybody should clean their own
doorsteps if they want the street to
stay clean." A n d finally she appeals
to others to j o i n her in conducting her
very worthwhile campaign. «

MEMORIES
Queen of the Day
Whatever happened to the former Queens and Maids
of Honor of the 50's and 60's ?
Y
ou w i l l no doubt recall
the traditional
May
Days and F i e l d Days,
and the queens and
maids of honor who symbolised
them, but these occasions naturally
remain clearest in the memories of
those who were queens and maids of
honor themselves. We shared their
recollections of those special days.
If you have been part of a deeprooted tradition and have treasured
clear memories of i t , you w i l l always
enjoy reminiscing and relieving these
days with those who share your
memories, even after the passage of
years. The M a y D a y and F i e l d Day
queens and maids of honor have each
gone their own way in life since then,
yet still share their pride in being one
time students of Robert College. We
gathered the once maids of honor and
queens of those days at a reunion in
Robert College, and spent pleasant
hours not only in reminiscence, but
catching up on their current news.
Queenly joys of spring Tuvana
(Bilen) A l t o n was both queen and
maid of honor in different years.
Çetin Karabulut, who now lives in the
United States, chose her as F i e l d D a y

studies, but attending the Conserva
tory at the same time.
ning her professional career as a con
cert pianist. T w o children and 20
years later, we found her as a profes
sor in the Piano Department of the
Istanbul University, State Conserva
tory.
Gulay (Yavuz) D e m i r c i , who was a
maid of honor the same year, was so
preoccupied with her forthcoming
wedding right after her final examina
tions that her memories of the day are
hazy. She remembers only being
seated on a throne and that the
weather was sunny.
She had not known about her nomi
nation and it was a surprise when she
was selected. D e m i r c i married and
went with her husband, also an RC
graduate, to England where they had
their first child. Her second c h i l d was
born after their return home. D e m i r c i
meanwhile took up horse riding, a
sport w h i c h she pursued for many
years, riding in the national team and
winning countless trophies.
Semra (Safa) Ç u l l u was elected
M a y Day Queen in '69. She married
after completing her studies at the
A c a d e m y of Fine Arts and she and her
husband went to the United States
where her husband took a higher
degree. Both her daughters were born
after they returned to Turkey.
Memorable field days B e i n g
selected by a k i n g or prince on F i e l d
D a y was a special thrill for İris (Selcen) Barzilay and Ç a ğ l a y a n (Yata
ğ a n ) Tercan. The F i e l d Day of '57,
when they were chosen as maids of
honor was unforgettable. That year
the joy was enhanced by a cocktail
party. B o t h wore dresses with full
skirts over stiff pettiecoats which
were the fashion of the day. Barzilay
recalls how her skirt kept b i l l o w i n g
up. W h e n she married and had a
daughter, Tercan became a house
wife, brought up her daughter, and
later settled in Ordu. Barzilay went to
Germany to study economics after
graduating. M a r r i e d on her return and
had a son. After he grew up she
attended tourist guide courses and
from time to time works as a guide.
M ü z e y y e n ( Ö z k a n ) Pamir, one of
the maids of honor in '63, has several
Fair ladies and elegant outfits added glamour and romance
to May Days and Field Days.
Her teachers showed their appre
ciation by selecting her as M a y Day
Queen. A l t o n has always remem
bered that day, when she was indeed
queenly in a long white dress and long
gloves. She was too excited even to
notice that her fiancé had come from
Switzerland to be there. After gradua
tion she married and went to live in

studies in music at the conservatory,

interesting anectodes from that mem
orable day. It was the 100th anniver
sary of the school's foundation, and
that year for the first time a maid of
honor from Robert College instead of
the G i r l s College was chosen. She
was chosen by her future husband
Tahsin Pamir. The kings and queens,
princes and maids of honor walked
together towards their thrones and sat
down. But Tahsin Pamir was no
sooner seated than he had to rush off
to change his suit for sportswear to
j o i n in the contest for the most athletic
student, in order to collect the few
extra points he needed. M ü z e y y e n
Pamir recalls how she sat there alone
until the end of the contest. After
marriage, Pamir taught chemistry
and science at several schools,
including Robert College, before
joining the T u r y a ğ company in İzmir.
After retiring from this post she
returned to İstanbul and resumed
working for the same company as
technical advisor for the İstanbul
region. She has two daughters.
Sema (Tekercan) Ş e n k u t ' s election
as maid of honor in '65 was as event
ful. She was chosen by F i e l d Day
prince H ü s e y i n Ş e n k u t , who was her
boyfiend as well as classmate. So it
came as no surprise. She remembers
being elegantly dressed in an embroi
dered chiffon outfit, with l a m é shoes
and shawl. She and her husband
treasure memories of the day. They
married after graduation and a year
later their son was born. She is

C a n l i studied sociology at Istanbul

son and daughter grew up, she and
some friends set up a studio making

Memories were really fresh for
Neylan Acar, who was 89 Field Day
Queen. By her day, the tradition had
changed, and the kings and princes no
longer chose the queens and maids of
honor. Instead representatives of the
students union and each class now
formed a jury to choose from among
the candidates, who paraded before
them at the ball. The jury began by

she heard her name announced in first
place, A c a r was overcome by confu
sion. The fact that it was the 125th
anniversary of the school's establish
ment made the event even more
memorable. The same year A c a r
began her studies in the E n g l i s h
teaching department of Marmara
University.
M e l i s Seyhun was maid of honor
two years running, in '89 when she
was in L y c é e I and in '90 in L y c é e II.
Neither year was she expecting to be
chosen, and the year before she
missed coming first by a narrow mar
gin. Seyhun is planning to pursue her
higher education in the U n i t e d States
in the field of international rela
tions.
Sibel Kutman, who was maid of
honor in '90, was chosen by a jury, as
were M e l i s Seyhun and Neylan Acar.
L i k e Seyhun, Sibel K u t m a n wants to
study in the United States. She has not
yet made her final decision about the
subject, but is considering business
administration.

glittering ceremonies of earlier years
and wished that they could have been
continued. " A t least they could crown
the queens," was a sentiment shared
by all..

M r . and Mrs. B u l l , who
had flown in from the

teachers as Orhan B e y

A silver anniversary
lunch held at B i z i m Tepe
in September brought
together 2 3 A C G girls.
Though there were
doubts as to whether eve
ryone could recognize
each other since some
hadn't seen their class
mates for 25 years there
weren't any major
problems!

was served and speeches
began with an introduc
tion by class rep A y k u t
Giirlek. M r . B u l l
expressed his longtime
association with Turkey,
noting that the following
day w o u l d mark the 30th
anniversary of his arrival
in Istanbul to take over as
headmaster of Robert
A c a d e m y . Other speak
ers included Faruk Sayit,
Resat K a y a h , C e m K o z l u
and actor Y a v u z e r Cetinkaya. C e m K o z l u (present
head of Turkish Airlines)
reminded the audience of
the speech M r . B u l l had
given during the
graduation ceremony in
1965 about not being
araid to help someone in
need whether the c o m
munity approved this help
or not and said that this
had been a guidelight
throughout his profes
sional career. He then
presented h i m an over
sized watermelon which
had been given to him
by a Bengeli refugee
that morning, as he was
about to fly to his home
land. The evening ended
with a firm desire of the
classmates to repeat the
occasion not every five
years but the f o l l o w i n g
year.
