Leaving a gift in your will to Saint Therese continued on page 3 SUMMER 2013 ROSE Playing Their Song Dick Macko Band honors Saint Therese with 45 years of great music It all started with an ice cream social. Then a dinner party. Then a holiday event. Soon Dick Macko, and then his band, were visiting the Saint Therese campus multiple times a month for various events and activities. Fast forward 45 years and the Dick Macko band is still entertaining Saint Therese tenants with their old-time favorites. Growing up, Dick Macko was always involved with music. He learned to play the accordion at age nine and played the clarinet in the high school band. As a University of Minnesota college student, he played the saxophone and piano. continued on page 3 Dick Macko has been playing for Saint Therese residents, tenants and families for over 45 years. Wornson Dear Friends, I want to take a moment to share with you exciting updates about Saint Therese. The Saint Therese Board of Directors and Leadership Team are nearing the completion of a longterm strategic planning process. For the past year, we have engaged a variety of professionals to assist us as we plan for our future. We have been focusing on ways to build stronger partnerships, engage employees thoughtfully and expand our innovative technologies, among other items. The strategic plan also includes reaching out to local parishes to enhance the support for seniors. This summer, Saint Therese hired Anne Marie Bartlett to help lead us in this endeavor. Anne Marie will be supporting local parishes with one-on-one consultations and educational initiatives as they prepare older adults in their congregation for the aging process. In addition to this important step, we will continue to explore ways in which we can build even stronger relationships with surrounding churches who wish to better serve their aging families. Another exciting change is the creation of a new position called Organization Learning and Development. As Saint Therese continues to grow, we have an excellent opportunity amongst our staff to educate and encourage our employees to become more confident, competent caregivers. Jolene Baker, Nurse Manager at the St. Odilia campus, has expanded her role and is now the Executive Director of Organization Learning and Development. Playing Their Song – Dick Macko Band continued from page 1 After graduating with a degree in Music Education, Dick thought it would be handy to learn to tune pianos. He received his certification and began tuning pianos in homes around the Twin Cities. “He’s kind of like our house band,” Julie says with a chuckle. “He knows many of the tenant’s favorite songs and will dedicate them directly to that person or couple. The tenants just love it.” Tuning pianos and playing in his band kept Dick busy and he never got to use his music education degree the way he had once intended. Favorites like “Edelweiss”, “In the Mood” and “Under Paris Skies” are often played at Saint Therese events throughout the year. For Dick, playing at Saint Therese is much like playing for a group of friends. “I just kept getting phone calls to tune pianos,” he said with a smile. Although Dick tunes the pianos at Saint Therese, he is best known for his musical talents at various events. Saint Therese of New Hope Activities Supervisor Julie Thomas said tenants only want Dick. She once tried a different band at an social event and everyone kept asking where Dick was. “It’s fun, I enjoy being here,” he said. “The people are great and I enjoy making them happy.” These days Dick is as busy as ever. He still tunes pianos and if the schedule at Saint Therese is any indication, the requests to play music will keep him busy for years to come. The Dick Macko Band recently played at the New Hope Campus’ Tenant and Family Picnic on August 14. Saint Therese recommends that you also consult your personal or professional advisor when taking this important step. 3 Saint Therese Celebrates 45 Years of Care and Services Did you know that on January 9, 2013 Saint Therese celebrated 45 years of senior care and services? In each issue of The Rose in 2013 we have featured notable events in our history. To see the complete timeline of our history visit www.sttheresemn.org/history. We hope you’ll take a moment to learn about the history of Saint Therese and how one small idea turned into an organization that has served and honored hundreds of thousands of seniors and their families for generations. 2008 – 2009 Saint Therese of New Hope opens the first Balance Clinic in a senior living community in the Midwest. A year later, Saint Therese Rehabilitation and Therapy Services opens the Life Balance Center. 2011 Saint Therese at St. Odilia opens an advanced senior care residence focused on palliative care with eight private rooms on the St. Odilia campus in Shoreview, MN. 2012 Saint Therese hit the ground running in 2012. Saint Therese purchased a home health care company. At Home Solutions by Saint Therese serves individuals in their own home within the seven county metro area. The St. Odilia campus in Shoreview specializes in palliative care for those experiencing an advanced chronic illness. Saint Therese Rehab (STR) offers balance assessments on their NeuroCom SMART EquiTest® Balance System. Saint Therese Rehabilitation and Therapy Services expanded from a department to its own division called Saint Therese Rehab (STR). The Saint Therese of New Hope Care Center launched a new Cardiac Care program for older adults with heart conditions. The Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake campus opened a 64-private care suite addition. On the Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux, the Brooklyn Park campus welcomed its first two residents. Today Saint Therese is continuing to expand and grow. In March Saint Therese announced plans to build a fourth community in the east metro suburb of Woodbury. The Oxbow Lake campus completed the continuum of care with the addition of private care suites offering transitional, long-term and memory care.
