to Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake
Saying Yes to
Saint Therese
Every morning, one Saint Therese at
Oxbow Lake tenant gets in his car and
drives the 7.5 miles to Saint Therese
of New Hope. There, he helps his
wife, who lives in the Care Center,
with breakfast and getting a good
start to her day. After breakfast, he
gets in his car and drives back home.
Sometimes, he’ll make a second trip
in the afternoon.
Saint Therese supporter Mary Raker
likes to say, “I’m a perfect example of
what happens when you don’t say ‘no’.”
Over 43 years ago, Mary got a call
from a good friend who knew about
Mary’s experience writing by-laws.
She said, “Mary, I’m going to ask you
a favor and I don’t want you to say no.”

after a long and careful process, we
will soon break ground on a skilled
nursing wing at Saint Therese at
Oxbow Lake.
One of Saint Therese’s core values is
to provide the full continuum of care
on each of our campuses. From the
very beginning, the vision for Saint
Therese at Oxbow Lake included a
state-of-the-art continuum of care
community that offered the full
array of housing and care options for
seniors.
Although he believes his wife is well
cared for, he wishes there was a care
center at Saint Therese at Oxbow
Lake so that he could be with her
more and easily visit her throughout
the day.

As you already know from the front page, Saint Therese at
Oxbow Lake is adding a skilled nursing wing to its campus.
Although a project like this is a big undertaking, I am thrilled
that we are keeping our promise to the tenants and fulfilling
our commitment to our core values.
As I walked with my mother through the aging process, she
and I both wished that she could remain near her friends in
a familiar environment, but her apartment building did not
offer the full continuum of care.
Having to go to a nursing home, even though it was Saint Therese, still added to her stress
and general frustration. Her health was failing and she had to leave her friends just when
she most needed their support.
I am thrilled that we are keeping our promise to the tenants
and fulfilling our commitment to our core values.
Fortunately, Saint Therese tenants will not have to find themselves with the same choice.
Thanks to the leadership of our board, we have nearly completed all phases of the planning
process for the addition and hope to be breaking ground very soon.
Over time, philanthropy has played an important role in Saint Therese’s success, and we are
calling on our supporters to help with this project. We have set an ambitious goal to raise
$1 million for the expansion. At the time this went to print, we had already raised $255,000.
In order to reach this goal, we will need lots of help (and maybe a miracle or two)! I hope you’ll consider joining in. There are so many ways to support this project. The
proceeds from all of our events, like the Golf Classic and the Associate Dinner will be
going to this effort. You can also make a general gift or pledge at any time.
No amount is too small. Thank you so much!

transporting residents to activities or
the doctor. As the Auxiliary evolved,
Mary and other Auxilians planned style
shows and boutiques and opened the
gift shop as ways to raise money for the
Care Center.
Eventually, Mary’s talents got her hired
on as Saint Therese’s Volunteer Director.
Later, she developed and headed the
secretarial services department. Mary
was employed at Saint Therese for 20
years before finally retiring; however,
she still remains an active member of
the Auxiliary.
Thankfully, Mary has also made the
choice to put Saint Therese in her will.
She has been a huge part of Saint
Therese’s past and present, and now
she will also be a part of our future.
She credits the dedicated board
of directors and pastoral staff, the
spiritual care, and the organization’s
commitment to its core values as the
things that make Saint Therese special.
Is Mary glad she said “yes” all those years
ago? “Absolutely!”, she says “Those were
some of my happiest times. It’s kept me
vital and alive. I love doing volunteer
and Auxiliary work, and Saint Therese
has been such a big part of my life.”

Board Update
Thank You Outgoing Board Members
Saint Therese is blessed to have a dedicated group of
community leaders who volunteer their time and talents
to the organization as members of the Foundation Board.
Saint Therese wishes to thank three outgoing Foundation
Board members for their years of service.
John Byron served on the board for 12 years and also lent
his legal and financial expertise to the Finance Committee
and the Investment Committee. After five years, Greg
Merz is leaving the board to pursue a job opportunity in
Texas. He assisted on the Strategic Planning Committee
and the Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake Board. He was
also a faithful attendee at many Saint Therese events.
For three years, Stephen Dupont offered important
marketing and public relations expertise to the Foundation
Board and served on the Development, Marketing, and
Communications Committee.
2010. Dr. Fairbairn is a member of the American Medical
Association, the Amercian Academy of Family Practice,
and the Hennepin County Medical Society. Dr. Fairbairn
is the on-call physician for Saint Therese’s transitional care
unit, and will bring important expertise and insights to
the board.
Kristin L. Kopp has been an advocate for many Twin
Cities social service agencies for over 20 years. At Home
Solutions, LLC was founded by Kristin in 2006 with the
purposeful intent to create a personalized, custom built
agency, providing professional home based services to
seniors, people with disabilities and families in crisis. Kristin
is an active member of several organizations including
the Society of Certified Senior Advisors, Minneapolis
Area Senior Workers Association, Care Options Network
and Minnesota Association of Guardianship and
Conservatorship.
Welcome New Board Members
Saint Therese is also excited to welcome two new members
to the Foundation Board. Dr. Scott Fairbairn is a
family practice doctor with North Clinic whose interests
lie in geriatric and palliative care. He was voted a “Top
Doctor” by Mpls/St. Paul Magazine for both 2009 and

apartments, and later, when it was well established, we
would add the skilled nursing wing.
We have been meeting with architects and the board, and
consulting with other experts in the industry, so that our
care community can truly
be considered state-ofthe art. The new 63-bed
facility will offer both
transitional and longterm care. Some of the
features we will include
are a “neighborhood
model,” where residents
are grouped in smaller
areas rather than large
wings; private rooms; a
fitness center with a therapy
pool; therapy services; and
family-style dining in each
neighborhood.
Despite
the
challenging
economic times, we believe this
is the right time to embark on
this project. Being able to “age
in place” in familiar surroundings is a blessing. At Saint
Therese of New Hope, we are often reminded of this. So
many times, husbands and wives who have cared lovingly for
declining spouses, find comfort in knowing that, when they
must place their beloved spouse in skilled nursing care, they
will be able to visit anytime day or night. When apartment
tenants have temporary setbacks requiring a care center stay,
they are visited by friends from the apartments and can still
attend daily mass with their neighbors.

In addition, with the looming age wave, there is a growing
need for care center beds in the area bordering Saint Therese
at Oxbow Lake. It is estimated that, by 2015, the number of
care center beds needed will outnumber the beds available
by a 3 to 1 margin.

“Nearly two-thirds of our
tenants may require a stay of
some length in a care center,
and I am so glad they will be
able to remain right here on our
campus.”
To generate support for this
project, we have launched
an ambitious fundraising
campaign with the goal of
raising $1 million. So far, we
have $255,000 in donations
and pledges. In addition, the
proceeds from this year’s Golf
Classic and Associate Dinner will go toward the expansion
project. In order to reach our goal, we hope that all of our
friends will choose to support this project in some way. No
gift is too small.

We were very grateful that football great Randall McDaniel
joined in the fun again this year, posing for photos and
challenging golfers to a “Beat the (Football) Pro” contest.
One lucky golfer even walked away with his Pro Football

Saint Therese Employees Attend Emerging
Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.
In June, three Saint Therese employees
attended the National Emerging
Leadership Summit for Long-Term Care
Administrators at George Washington
University in Washington, D.C. The
conference was geared toward
relatively new leaders in the field of
long-term care.
The three employees, Dinah Martin,
Sara Sterling, and Kristine Betz, were
past interns who have continued
their employment in leadership roles
at Saint Therese. All three are also
licensed nursing home administrators.
The focus of the conference was on
making the profession more attractive
to good leaders; creating a better
image for long-term care; working
with and educating our legislators;
understanding administrator licensing,
and current and future challenges; and
creating action plans to help carry us
forward.
Kristine Betz said that it was an
excellent experience and “it was very
exciting to discuss the challenges and
opportunities that exist to influence the
future of long-term care.”
