Diane Greenawalt remembers this from her days as a teacher. Kids love to get
teachers on April Fool's Day. You're shoe is untied." "You've got a bug in you hair."
"Your car tire is flat." It so delighted them! One year we decided to get even. We told
our classes that at 2 p.m. there would be a special assembly. We told them Loo Flirpa
was coming! The kids were excited as we got in line in the hall. We could hear them
talking and wondering who was Loo Flirpa? They started to get impatient because the
line wasn't moving. We told them, “Don't worry Loo Flirpa was coming!!!” Finally word
started to spread from one class to another and we could hear groans as they realized
that there would be no assembly because Loo Flirpa was April Fool spelled backwards! We trooped back into
our rooms. The kids were ticked but the teachers laughed and laughed!

Fingers Come Home
From Barbara Tyree: My husband had a coworker who could not "touch type", only hunt and peck. They
switched the keys on his typewriter and he could not figure out why everything was typing wrong. He asked
several coworkers to test it out and see what was wrong. All of the others were touch-typers and had no problem getting the right letters to type. By the end of the day, he nearly threw the typewriter out the window. This
guy was a major target...they also superglued his phone receiver down once and he clocked himself in the
head with the entire phone.

☻We bought our house through a Sale by Owner. The new owners moved up the road and put what would
become our house for sale. We bought it from them and stored away the For Sale by Owner signs. On March
31 at 1:00 in the morning, we sneaked up to their new house and planted the signs in their yard. Sunday morning came and they couldn't understand why everyone was calling them to ask why they were moving again.
Took them about a hour to figure out we'd put the signs on their lawn.

Jakie’s Journal
Jack Witmer recalls, “My brother and I used to switch salt for the sugar in the sugar bowl. This was fun at
breakfast time when we had cereal.”
☻I always had a rivalry with my neighbor about who would get their red tomatoes first. Some years he would
win. Some years I would win. One year, I hung a whole bunch of bright red Christmas ornaments on his
plants. He can home thinking he'd hit the jackpot. When he realized what they were he laughed so hard he split
his pants.
☻One year Jeff was having some difficulty with one of his nightclubs and the IRS. It appeared the nightclub
mistakenly put $60,000 on his paperwork instead of $600 and the IRS wanted their money! That all got
straightened out, but I couldn't resist when April 1 came around. I obtained an IRS notice from work, scanned it
and changed the info on it to make it seem like now they wanted even more money because he'd lied about the
original problem. I even found an IRS envelop to put it in. He swore up and down and complained and stomped
for the entire day until finally around dinnertime I asked him what day it was. I asked him three times and finally
he got it. He told me I won the prize for the best gag.
And a family tradition from Lisa McMullen

My mother loved fooling my brother and I on April Fool's Day by sticking strange things in our lunch boxes. One
time I remember getting a wooden moose. Another memorable moment was when I bit into my sandwich only
to find there was nothing in it. Just two slices of bread. Another interesting item was plastic green grapes. So,
naturally I carried on this tradition with my own children with the fake fruit, statues, boxes of Mac n' Cheese or
jello, etc. When they stopped bringing lunches to school I had to get more creative by putting weird things in
their back packs -- like stuffed animals (and they were in high school, so this did not please them), strange
clothing, frozen meat, etc. Yep, good times.

APPY SPRING EVERYONE! Flowers are blooming.
Peepers are peeping. Baseball starts in a few days. I am
one happy camper. This Captain’s Log is going to have
to be short and sweet this month. I’m writing this from my dad’s
house in Cumberland, otherwise known as that “godforsakenhellhole-I-call-home,” the Tequila Times deadline is
looming large and the computer just ate my original draft. (I hate computers.)
I just want to say thanks to
everyone who came out to the Peter
Mayer show and who helped out with
the load in/
load out and CD sales. A special
thanks to Dan and
Dani Hoy. Dan had signed up for CD sales but I needed someone
at the club table. We had thought the tables were going to be together but the club table was waaaay upstairs. Dan and Dani took
one for the team and agreed to go to the hinterlands to hand out
flyers and applications. Thanks, guys. The show, by the way, was
fabulous. And just so everyone knows, I did not tackle Peter and
make him take me up on stage. He asked me to come up and
dance. And, as most of you all know, I’ll dance at any opportunity anyway. And who am I to say “no” to Peter Mayer? It was
pretty amazing to be standing up there looking out at the audience. And then to look over and see Peter singing next to me,
well, that’s one I’m going to remember for a while.
Next up for us is Bill Wharton, the Sauce Boss. I’m
really looking forward to this event. I looooove the Sauce Boss.
And having KD Moore opening is an extra treat. If you don’t
have your tickets yet, don’t miss this one. It’s going to be a
LARGE time. I was listening to
Bill’s new CD, “Hot and Heavy”
on my drive down to Cumberland. It’s excellent. You may
have heard a couple of the
songs on BeachFront
Radio. I’m hoping Bill
does “Get Naked and
Surf” at our show. A surf song
on a blues CD? I’m sure it
would give some blues “purists”
the vapors but I love it.
Also, on the morning of
the Sauce Boss show, that’s
April 17th, is our spring road
clean up. We are going to be
joined by some of the TMI people so it would be great to have a
big turn out of club members,
really impress them. Plus, having the extra help will make the job
go super quick so we can all get cleaned up and get ready for
some gumbo!
OK, time to send this off to the Tequilas Times and then
watch some more women’s basketball and/or women’s golf with
my dad. It’s what he likes to do.

Captain’s Grog, from the Toms River House restaurant. NJ – submitted by Dan Hoy
This is Irish coffee with a twist.
Make an elixir by mixing one teaspoon cinnamon, one teaspoon ginger, two tablespoons
of raw sugar, and a half teaspoon nutmeg with 1/2 cup of rum, and 1 cup of water. Bring
to a simmer in a sauce pan and stir frequently. The ginger will gel and become really
disgusting, but after simmering for a half hour, remove from heat and let it settle. Take
the clear liquid and save it in a bottle and refrigerate. A little cloudy is not a problem.
Try to avoid getting any jelled ginger in the mix. In a heat-roof cup combine one cup of
good strong hot coffee, one shot of rum, and one shot of the elixir. On top of that float
a tablespoon of heavy cream barely whipped, and garnish with cinnamon. Serve to
your crew with a plate of ginger snaps. Nothing like it after a night raid takin’ booty from
the crown off the coast of Bermuda.
** But this one is my favorite! I challenged Jack Masterson, a beer drinker, in the email I sent requesting drink recipes.
I told him that no, PBR is not a mixed drink. And here is his response!
Name me a fruity drink that won a blue ribbon in 1893....that’s right, PBR did!!
PBR contains only the finest of hops and grains...how fine is that?!!!??
And to make you happy, the next time I drink a Pabst, I promise to stick one of those fruity drink umbrellas in the can and
hum “Wasting away again in Margaritaville” as I drink it!!

Fingers comes home: Storied musician returns to Miss.
G
by Billy Watkins • [email protected] • March 14, 2010
reg "Fingers" Taylor has spent a large portion of his
adult life with a harmonica between his lips, making
it weep, howl, plead and bleed.
Still, the instrument mystifies
him. "It's a mighty, mighty machine with
a tiny, tiny body," he says. "I guess that's
always intrigued me about it. How can
such a big sound come from something so
small?" Fact is, it can't - except in the
hands of a select few. Taylor's unique gift
of coaxing a harmonica into becoming
something almost human helped create
music history. The 57-year-old graduate
of Callaway High School, who recently
moved back to the Jackson area, was an
original member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral
Reefer Band. He was there when Buffett
made it big, toured with him for 24 years,
and still plays with him on occasion. In
2009, he joined Buffett for a show in Chicago. His impact on Buffett's career was
huge. According to Norbert Putnam, who
produced Buffett's first six albums that
included the iconic Changes in Latitudes,
Changes in Attitudes, Taylor and keyboard player Mike Utley
were key ingredients to Buffett's rise to fame.
"If I had lost either of them, I don't think Buffett's
records would have been nearly as successful," Putnam says.
"Fingers' harp became identifiable with Buffett's music. "And
Fingers used to get the live shows started for Jimmy. The curtain would go up and there would be Fingers Taylor and Coral
Reefer. Fingers would get the crowd all wound up, and then
introduce Jimmy." After nearly four decades on the road,
Taylor returns to the Jackson area to be near his mother,
Doris, and many longtime friends. "It's where I belong," he
says. He comes bearing gifts for all music lovers - hundreds of
harmonicas that he intends to make sure do not gather dust.
"There is no way to begin to measure what that means to the
Jackson music scene," says Malcolm White, a former music
promoter and now executive director of the Mississippi Arts
Commission. "It could help get national acts here, if they think
there is a chance Fingers Taylor might sit in with them." "He's
happiest when he's playing," says longtime friend Vicky Dent
of Brandon. "That's one of the things I love about Fingers. He
has never viewed himself as a star. He just likes playing the
harmonica for people." He grew up the eldest of three children
in Wichita, Kan. "Greg had terrible allergies when he was
younger," his mom says. "The winters were horrible, and
Greg's daddy's folks were from Alabama. We loved the South.
So we moved to Jackson in 1969 when Greg was a junior in
high school." He first attended Murrah, where he was editor of
the student newspaper, then finished at Callaway before heading to the University of Southern Mississippi to study journalism. Music had already touched his soul. "From the time the
Beatles played the Ed Sullivan Show when I was 10 years old,
and all throughout the British Invasion, I couldn't get enough
of it. I loved the (Rolling) Stones, the
Animals, the Dave Clark Five, all those
bands." He began to study the people
who inspired the British groups and
discovered many were blues performers
from the Mississippi Delta. "I started
listening to them," he says. "Guys like
Sam Myers. Fred McDowell. Howlin'
Wolf. Muddy Waters. "Their lyrics were
so powerful ... even poetic to a point. I
was blown away. And that's why I was
thrilled to find out we were moving to
Mississippi. This is sacred ground to
me." Taylor had taken piano lessons in
Kansas, but the blues turned him on to
the harmonica. He played both in different bands while at USM, but it soon
became clear he had a special relationship with the harmonica. He always
kept one stashed in a blue jean pocket.
It came in handy one night in 1973
when Buffett, then a struggling musician who had also attended USM for a while, came to Hattiesburg to play The Hub, a popular bar. "I'd never seen him before," Taylor recalls. "I remember he was wearing a 10-gallon
hat and had long, long blonde hair. It was just him and his
acoustic guitar." Buffett had heard about the local dude who
could make a harmonica talk. Midway through the show, he
invited Taylor to join him for a few tunes. "We had a good
time and I could tell that Jimmy, at some point, was going to
do something different and important," Taylor says. "But at
that time, I was a little better off than he was. He had no car.
No money. And he needed to get to Mobile to see some girl. He
asked me to drive him down there, and I did." A year later,
when Buffett signed a record deal with ABC/Dunhill and
started putting a band together, Taylor was the first musician
he called. Buffett added Roger Bartlett on guitar, Harry
Dailey on bass, Phillip Fajardo on drums ... and away they
went. By 1975, they were opening shows for Linda Ronstadt,
Roger McGuinn and Jerry Jeff Walker. In 1977, Buffett wrote
the Caribbean-flavored song Margaritaville, which reached No.
2 on the Billboard singles chart. The tune's carefree island
theme became Buffett's calling card, and a string of hits followed: Cheeseburger In Paradise; A Pirate Looks at Forty;
Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes; and Son of a Son
of a Sailor, among others.
After opening for the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and
Jackson Browne over the next three years, Buffet and the
Coral Reefers became headliners in 1981. Except to stop long
enough to record an album, they stayed on the road for most
of the next eight years. If they took a brief break, Taylor
would find someone else to play with, such as legendary singer/

songwriter James Taylor (no relation). They toured the country together in the mid-1980s. One of their stops was the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
"When we weren't playing, I wasn't good for James,
and James wasn't good for me," he says, managing a smile.
"We both had developed some bad habits. I never really
thought drugs or booze would make you a better player. It just
seemed to be part of the schematics of the business." They
grabbed him hard. Not until a couple of years ago did Fingers
Taylor shake free. He realizes it is a daily battle, and that is
another reason he has settled in the Jackson area, surrounding
himself with people who care about him more as a person than
a musician. "It's been a long, hard road for Greg," says Doris,
who was widowed in 1993 when Taylor's dad, Seth, died of
leukemia. "But I'm glad he's back home. He's exercising now,
and we're seeing to it that he eats healthy and takes care of
himself." Even during the glory days, Taylor would find time
to come back and play Jackson. "Some of my most enjoyable
times I had booking bands was when Fingers and Sam Myers
would get together on stage at George Street Grocery," White
says. "They would have these 'harp offs.' It was amazing to
watch them go at it." Taylor is slowly working his way into
the metro music scene. He performs most Thursday nights
with Mark Whittington at Soulshine Pizza in Ridgeland. He
plays gigs at various places with Chris Gill, a popular local musician who shares Taylor's passion for the blues. "Fingers
takes a show to the next level," Gill says. "First of all, you realize you're playing with a legend, so it probably makes me step
up my game. But what he adds is incredible energy. "He
played about five numbers on my 2009 CD (Harmony St.) and
I can tell you he hasn't lost a thing. He would hear a song one
time and do it in one take." Gill laughs. "We're playing A
Closer Walk With Thee at (Wells Memorial United Methodist
Church in Jackson) at 11 a.m. (today)," he says. "I like doing
the version bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee used
to do. I asked Fingers if he had ever heard of them. He said,
'Yeah, I toured Australia with them one time.' "That is typical
Fingers. You can hardly name somebody he hasn't played
with. We are so lucky he chose to come back home."

News from Cheeseland - by Dan Hall
Just when you thought the only worthwhile things to come out of Wisconsin are
cheese and Leinenkugel’s beer, Milwaukee journalist/author/singer/songwriter/
storyteller Jim Hoehn has come up with not one but two new CDs – Royalty Check
Hotel and Thongs In The Key of Life, Vol. IV.
For those who may not be familiar with him, Jim is a frequent entertainer at Meeting
of the Minds in Key West and many Parrot Head events across the country such as
Stars Fell on Alabama and Pardi Gras in New Orleans. He performed at our Amish
Beach Bash in September 2007. He has opened for such notable songwriters and
performers as Rodney Crowell, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen, Todd Snider,
Warren Zevon and many others. Jim adheres strictly to his musical philosophy of six
strings, five fingers, three chords, no problem.
Released in 2009 Royalty Check Hotel is his latest recording. Recorded at Sugar
Studio in Bastrop, Texas, it includes 10 original songs brought to life under the production guidance of legendary Texas
guitarist John Inmon. It also features Bob Livingston from the Lost Gonzo Band on harmony vocals. One of our club
members, Tracy McFatridge, has her name listed on the liner notes “for a spot on the stage”. Check it out! Here is the
track listing:
1. Howie Played Accordion
2. Three-Chord Barbecue
3. Dark Side of the Island
4. Tedium of Cool
5. Callin’ In Gone (and you thought it was a Boat Drunks song)
6. I Still Like Herb Alpert (my favorite)
7. Tree House Peace of Mind
8. The Dancing Flamingo Queens
9. Poker Night at the Purgatory Lounge
10. Palm Tree Kind of Day
I’m not sure where the Royalty Check Hotel is located but according to Jim it features
clean rooms and affordable rates. All songwriters must pay cash in advance. No
whiners or rap music allowed. I’m ready to book a room there!
Now for a word about the Thongs In The Key of Life series. Be honest, how many of you knew that Jim Hoehn is the
producer and mastermind behind all four compilations? That’s right, Thongs IV was just released in early March. Volume
I, also known as Bare Essentials For The Beach, came out way back in 1999 and included songs by Jim Morris, Scott
Kirby, Brent Burns and many others for a total of 16 songs. Thongs II came out in 2001 and features our own Dennis
McCaughey’s Caribbean Holiday and songs by Hugo Duarte, Don Middlebrook and Jimmy Marventano, when his band
was known as Second Wind and not The Parrots. 2006 marked the release of Thongs III and included Tropical Soul’s
“Practical Dreamer” as well as songs by Sunny Jim, the Boat Drunks and John Frinzi. Thongs IV is a collection of songs
by veteran tropical music performers such as John Reno and Brent Burns but also includes relative newcomers like
Howard Livingston & Mile Marker 24, the Young Rebel Goombas and Ramajay Intercoastal. Songlist:
1. Magic Chair - John Reno
2. Tonight - Young Rebel Goombas
3. Sailor¹s Story - Bob Banerjee
4. Tangy Margaritas - Boat Drunks

TROPICAL SOUL - SUMMER IS A COMIN'
Spring is here and summer is fast approaching and Tropical Soul is
ready for an amazing spring and summer. April brings a California tour, May
brings Floridaze, the Navagator, a week at Margaritaville in Key West and a gig
for the Miami ParrotHead club. Summer will be busy with gigs at Rockwell's,
Heritage Hills, the Big Owl Tiki Bar on Kent Island, the new outdoor deck at Ski
Roundtop, summer concerts in Lewes and Pot Nets, DE, just to mention a few.
The full five-piece Tropical Soul Band will once again headline Summer in Paradise. August will take Tropical Soul back to Key West for four days at the Hogs
Breath, a return to the Navagator and a house concert in Tampa. And not to
wish the summer away, but soon it will be time to return to Key West for the
third time this year and play our annual MOTM week at the Hogs Breath.
Tropical Soul will have gigs as solo, duo, trio, and four- and fivepiece bands. Heather and Dave from Copper Sky will be joining Dennis as
much as possible and he, in turn, will be playing with Copper Sky. Dave and
Heather will also be making the trek to Key West in November to play at
MOTM.

Wow, it’s been a wild ride on The BeachFront so
far! In less than two months on the air, we’ve
reached the Top 10 on the Rock Station chart and
have hit NUMBER ONE on the Americana Station
chart on Live365. We’ve also logged over 30,000
streams and have hit our 2,500th Fan on FaceBook.
BeachFront Radio is the newest Trop
Rock station on the Internet. We feature the best in Trop Rock as well as
rock and country classics that are great to sing along to. Along with that,
we also air the best Trop Rock radio shows out there including the awardnominated Big Burrito and Island Time Radio plus the award winning Time
After Island Time and The Amish Beach Party w/DJ Jeff Allen, the only daily
live Trop Rock show on the Internet. BeachFront Radio is also the exclusive home of Navigator Happy Hour with hosts Mad Marty and Sure Shot
Shelly plus we’ve got some more unique shows in the works!
After already hitting Pardi Gras in New Orleans, Jimmy Buffett Tailgaters in Columbia, SC and Orlando, FL, and eight days on The Caribbean
on the Atlanta PH Cruise, we’ve got more stops in the works. In the next
few weeks, BeachFront Radio will be part of Flipperstock in St. Louis, Parrothead Rendezvous in Panama City Beach, FL, and another huge Buffett
Tailgater in Nashville, TN. We’ll also have Official BeachBums at
SpringPhling in NJ and Phins To the West in CA. Stay tuned for big news on
TropStock In the Village in Cocoa Village, FL in October and our Cruise To
Key West in November!
