Safety in Gurdon Woman drives away with
officer hanging from car
By Joe May

A California woman gave a
Pike
County
Sheriff’s
deputy a scare Wednesday
afternoon when she angrily
drove off with his arm rolled
up in her car window.
According to deputy travis
Hill, a woman later identified as Cindy Bush, 46, of
Fresno, CA came by the
PCSo and demanded some
articles of property from her
vehicle, which had been
impounded during an arrest
earlier in the month.

afoot?
there are many things ni
this old world that i just
don’t understand. one of
these things is representative
democracy. i know how it is
allegedly supposed to work,
but what confounds me is
when i turn on the television
or open a newspaper, i don’t
see my elected representatives, whose salary i help
pay, showing any concern
about the actual feelings of
the public.
the closest i ever saw a
politician get to being concerned about my feelings
was former Fourth district
Congressman Jay dickey. it
seemed he wouldn’t make a
move without consulting his
public. i respected him for
that.
We were taught in school
that when we elect someone,
he or she is to then represent
our thoughts and ideas in the
local, state or national governments. Yeah, i know. it’s
supposed to work like that,
but it doesn’t.
But it still surprises and
angers me when government
makes a huge departure from
the thoughts and desires of
the majority to serve a small
contingent of people whose
ideas simply go against the
grain of normal thinking.
take for example Senate
Bill 598, which hopes to
repeal the defense of
Marriage Act, a measure put
in place by the Clinton

students due to drug infractions.
According
to
Superintendent

Possession/distribution of
drugs infraction. Placed on
probationary attendance was
another eighth grade male
who obtained the drugs from
the student. the student will
be in the program for half of
the school year and will have
to undergo counseling as
well as drug testing.
Following an executive session, the board voted to hire
Freda Bosley as a half-time

had a suspended drivers’
license, the dispatcher notified Hill of the matter.
As he was giving pursuit,
Hill was notified by two offduty Murfreesboro officers
of the woman’s location and
was able to stop the suspect
north of town.
As he spoke to Bush, Hill
noted a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. the suspect was very
argumentative and insisted
she had a valid license and as
proof offered up a California
identification card.

would released if she

the woman’s license was suspended. He then notified
Bush that she was under

Amity's new recorder/treasurer was officially sworn in
during a brief city council
meeting tuesday evening.
Mayor Chester Clark
administered the oath of
office to Heather Bankhead.
She replaces Katrina Angel,
who will continue with the
city until January to train
Bankhead in the position.
Water Superintendent
Charles ducotes told the
council that he will likely
need a new truck next year.
His current vehicle has over
200,000 miles on it. He
commented that with reading
water meters it would be better to purchase a small vehicle such as a golf cart simply
for that task.
“i probably start and stop
300 times in one day reading
meters,” he said.
ducotes also told the council that an employee was
granted leave time recently
and it was later discovered
that he did not have the time
coming. the council discussed the matter and at the
motion of Councilmen
Johnny McAnally and dora
Lee Bean, voted to allow the
worker to have his leave earlier than he would have originally been eligible.
in other business, the council:

replacement of the filter at
the water plant is due to start.
*Heard ducotes say that

*Heard Angel say that the
olds Foundation has contributed money for the
Chamber of Commerce's
annual Cowboy Christmas
celebration to benefit underprivileged children.

Aside from the thermostat

if passed by the Senate, this
act, known as the “respect for
Marriage Act,” would not only
repeal doMA, it could give federal recognition to homosexual
“marriages.” this despite the
fact that 31 states have laws on
their books banning such unions.
Even in California, citizens voted
to ban strange-sex marriage,
though the courts are still
attempting to determine if they
had the right to do so. What a

Public Notice
Centerpoint School district held its annual report to the public Monday,
November 14, 2011. the meeting began with a discussion of each of the
seven School Performance indicators of Act 35 of 2003. these indicators and
progress toward meeting each was discussed by building principals rodney
Whitfield, Penny Smothers, Mike Jackson, deric owens, directors of
Curriculum Cass Adams and Sharon Kimery, and Superintendent Anne
Butcher.
indicators:
Achievement—Following a discussion of the various achievement tests, it
was noted that Centerpoint intermediate School made Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP) for the 2010-11 school year; since Centerpoint Primary made
AYP for the 2010-1011 year, the “School improvement Year one” status held
and Centerpoint High School was placed on “School improvement Year
three School improvement” in Literacy. School improvement status indicates that though the schools made some progress, they did not reach the
goals set by No Child Left Behind in one or more subpopulations.
the district School improvement Goals and the progress toward meeting
those goals were also discussed. the goals include Literacy, Math, and
English Language Learners.
Actions to assist in helping all schools meet AYP include the following:

Literacy Coach placed at Primary for embedded Professional development to
implement the Arkansas Comprehensive Balanced Literacy Program.
Professional development with all teachers to encourage writing across the
curriculum
Professional development for administrators in instructional leadership
Accreditation--All three schools are fully accredited by the state. Centerpoint
Primary and Centerpoint High School are also accredited by the North
Central Association. the district will be undergoing the district AdvancEd
Accreditation process in december.
retention—Six % of last year’s kindergartners were retained while fewer
than three percent of students at the other grade levels were retained.
discipline—discipline policies are distributed to parents each year at the
beginning of the year; discipline training is provide to all staff members; and
the parent involvement plan has been adopted by the district. the number of
discipline incidents at Centerpoint Schools is less than the state average.
demographics—96% of the teachers in the district are completely certified in
the areas in which they teach. 43% of the teachers hold bachelor’s degrees
while 57% have earned a master’s degree.
School Choice—Approximately one percent of the students enrolled in
Centerpoint Schools last year were obtained by School Choice.
Approximately 9% of the total student body is from school choice.
Economic—district’s millage is 38.8; the expenditure per student is $9,011;
the average teacher salary is $39230.82. 70% of Centerpoint students are
economically disadvantaged based on the free and reduced lunch calculations.

First one down
it has come to my attention that several of you may not be big high
school football fans. i used to be the same way until i realized how
important the competition is to our children's self esteem.
the Gurdon Go-devils football team, 2011 vintage, is an example
of something children, parents and fans can be proud of. We just won the
first round of the state playoffs over the Cross County thunderbirds, 376! i must confess i do not know who our conference champions Godevils play next, but i would imagine the game will take place Friday
and be aired on 106.9 radio.
this year's football season started with the tragic death of Montel
Williams, a well-loved student at Gurdon, who apparently simply had
heart failure - probably unrelated to football practice since the boy had
only been on the field a few minutes.
But his team mates have rallied. With a young sophomore quarterback, Austin Kirkpatrick, at the helm, under Coach John Pace and his
assistants of course, the Gurdon Go-devils have gone on to make us
proud.
Yes, we know. We lost one game to Mt. ida. it happens. it was our
only conference loss. But the players picked themselves up and came
back the next week to smack some thunderbirds to the ground!
Enough football jargon. i realize some don't even know what i just
said. However, most people in this area do have an inkling about what
healthy, youthful competition means. it means a future for these young
men. it means they can learn some integrity and some respect for God.
Pace has them pray after every game and i commend him for that.
in this world of anything goes and the ever going popularity of giving up your dreams before even giving them a chance, we need some
praise for good old fashioned hard work and integrity. Whether i dream
to be a dedicated factory worker, lumber yard worker, doctor, lawyer or
even just a public servant like a journalist essentially is, the fact is a
dream usually is formed out of ability and desire to see that desire develop and become a positive reality.
i have a friend who is feeling down right now. He lost his dad last
year and he misses him. Joshy is having a hard time in kindergarten right
now because he is scared. Grandpa, that's me, is trying to show him that
he can overcome the horrible tragedy of losing his daddy. But the road
won't be easy. Little Josh will have to form a dream and go for it.
He will need encouragement and to feel loved. this Grandpa will
be there, the good Lord willing, to help him through all four quarters of
his game plan. Between me and the rest of his family who loves him,
Little Josh will still have a very good chance at being a success at something. With no support group, those chances would be a lot less...
Sure, a football game is not all there is to life. i used to be one of
these guys who would hear sports people getting enthusiastic and think...
yeah right. then i realized it was a building block. if you can be a part
of a winning team on a football field, and you can see your best pay off
there, that transfers to regular life. if you can win in one arena, you can
keep those grades up academically and win in another one. And besides,
football players of achievement many times get scholarships that may
make the difference between putting wings to a dream and shelving a
dream requiring an education forever...
So when you are tempted to blow off congratulating your local
football team members for a job well done, congratulate them anyway.
remember how important it was in your life for somebody to encourage you. if you have ever accomplished anything through hard work and
integrity, as the song says, that's something to be proud of.
iN GURdoN
the deer season is in full swing. i am not sure if i will go this year,
but we have a couple of friends and relatives that say i had better clean
out my freezer because there will be deer meat back there! i hope so. My
wife and i, and our son Jacob, all love to eat it.
Perhaps i will be the one to shoot that 10-point buck this year. As
the old saying goes, you never know until you try.
in addition to deer season, Gurdon is trying to convert an old hospital to a 100-bed jail. i have heard pro and con on this idea. i think it
would be a good idea if it can be done for $2 million, all said and done.
And if the mayor is right and we can pick and choose taking prisoners
so it is not a losing proposition financially. these two "ifs" are big ones,
but i believe they can be conquered with hard work and determination that is if the government cooperates and some sort of funding vein is discovered.
one of my friends said they would never convert it for $2 million.
i suppose that is what the feasibility study will determine. Me, i choose
to have faith it will all work out. Just because this is an era of political
unrest, economic downturn and an increased hopelessness in the general public, it does not mean that those of us who refuse to give up can
not get this country back going in a positive direction.
So before you scoff at the jail idea, let the powers that be
figure out if statistically it can work. You can scoff or you can
puff up any business venture, but the accounting books don't
lie! Sure, they can be cooked, but an honest set of books are just
that. So if the study finds out we can have a Gurdon jail that
makes money for $2 million and Clark County chooses to help
us make it a reality with an already existing fund to do so, let's
do it! Who says Clark County can not be a positive trendsetter?
So as to the Gurdon proposal of getting a hospital converted to a 100-bed jail, i say let's back their efforts. if it works,
good. if it does not, at least we will have tried something to
improve the town and solve a serious problem of space in the
current jail system.
i personally want to thank folks like Mayor Clayton
Franklin, Gurdon Police Sgt. Chris russell and treasurer and
recorder tambra Childres for trying to be part of the solution.
i wish them luck with the feasibility study. of course, we have
to get the grant first. But at least we have applied and the City
Council has backed the dream.
Life is composed of two types of people, the workers and
those who have given up. Some have "wonderful reasons" for
giving up. others look like they should have given up but they fought on
to help others until the end. Which type of person are you?
i’m thinking maybe i
made the wrong call...

Would you like to know the
future? While many assume some
things and events are inevitable,
some of us wonder whether we
could change the inevitable, especially if change would be for the
better.
For at least the last hundred years
or so American politicians have
toyed with following European
models of progressive socialistic
democracies. Why? i suppose
they view government benefits as
being not only good for the people
but also good for the governors
who wield the power.
But therein lies the problem:
does power belong to the government or to the people?
America was founded upon principles of government of the people, by the people, and for the people, whereas Europe has a rich tradition of powerful aristocracies
and governance by kings, queens,
popes, and dictators. For heaven’s
sake, didn’t our forefathers rebel
against these governors and create
a whole new egalitarian form of
governance?
Yet, politicians are drawn to
power like moths drawn to a
flame. Progressive politicians
have never heard a problem they
could not solve with a government program. that’s what’s gotten us into this mess today.
Progressive politicians – from
both sides of the aisle i might add
– have grown our government
well beyond what those of us who
pay taxes (the 51%) can afford.
But, government leaders should
not be fearing taxpayers as much
as bond traders.
taxpayers have been revolting
against the government forever.
tEA Parties are the latest iteration
of tax revolts, and tEA Parties are
making a dramatic difference in
state houses and legislatures
across America.
But bond traders, those who buy,
sell, and rate government bonds
will be the death knell of progressive politicians as we have seen in
Greece and italy, and will surely
see in Spain and France.
European nations are reaping the
end results of government giving
people everything “for free”
including healthcare and education as well as overly generous
government wages, pensions, and
early retirements. Not only are
governments crumbling under
overwhelming debt, but people
are rioting because these same
governments cannot continue giving them the benefits they
promised. they’ve run out of
credit.
America is not that far behind
because our debt has skyrocketed
to nearly 100-percent of our GdP
and we’ve already suffered one
credit downgrade. We’re on the
verge of suffering another credit
downgrade if Washington does
not rein in spending.
We’ve seen rioters across
Europe protesting cuts in entitlements because nations have
run out of credit. When
America runs out of credit
and Washington has to cut
entitlements, will we see rioting in our cities? We’re
already seeing rioting.
We’ve followed Europe’s
lead in growing entitlement
spending well beyond what
taxpayers can afford, and
we’re well on our way to having to implement severe austerity measures just like
European socialist democracies.
Are cuts in government benefits and riots across America
inevitable? Yes, if we continue progressive politics as
usual. But, we can change the
future if we act now and stop
irresponsible deficit spending. Europe’s present need not
be our future.

Beware of sneaky vines,
entangled cords and hoses
Forget foreign, think local
terrorists like simple strands
of rope, electric cords, water
hoses, vines, even Christmas
decorations that attack without warning. recently, i’ve
noticed the creeping plants
growing in our yard are out
to get me. they appear
harmless but they lurk foot
high, waiting to trip me.
Maybe it’s my age.
Come to think of it these
attacks began earlier, i just
wasn’t aware. First there
were poison ivy vines that
have plagued me all my life.
Even today, a lot of threeleafed greenery in our yard
still exists after gallons of
roundup. the only redeeming feature is that this time
of year the leaves turn a
beautiful red—the color of
my rash.
then there are the honeysuckle vines. in bloom, they
spray our valley with sweetsmelling perfume. i love the
fragrance. But don’t mess
with the vines. Even one can
trip you. A bunch can give
you trouble. After my stint in
the Korean War as a Marine
and back home, part of my
self-rehab was to keep busy
cleaning up around my
grandmother’s farm house.
to help i bought a used,
probably World War ii, jeep
that was still in good
mechanical shape. After a
month’s clearing unwanted
growth and burning it along
with some rotted lumber
from outbuildings, i had the
place looking pretty good.
then i got the bright idea
of making a road on one leg
of the property line. i used
the jeep bulldozer-like over
small bushes. Eventually, i
entered the jungle of honeysuckle vines that covered
some of the property. No
problem for a four-wheel
drive, i thought, until the
wheels stopped turning! the
vines had entwined around
both axels so thick the
wheels couldn’t move! it
took me a couple of hours to
cut the mesh away before i
could move the jeep.
that lesson learned, today
i just watch my step among
vines to keep from tripping.
But there are man-made
strands out to get me.
i remember when i was
about twelve when daddy
first took me fishing with
him at delight. He had given
me one of his old rods and
reels to practice with before
this event. We started fishing
on Wolf Creek from the
swinging bridge up stream.
daddy had been catching
perch and bass along the
way and asked why i hadn’t
had a bite.
“Because you fish the
hole, first!” i blurted out
before i thought. Sassing
wasn’t allowed. i was in for
it.
instead, daddy laughed,
“You’re right, Son.”
Next was the long blue
hole too deep to wade and
with bush overgrowth on
both sides except for a couple of spots. At the first one,
daddy said, “oK, Son show
your stuff. Put it up there
near that big rock.”
i wanted him to feel proud
of me. i tried to cast that far.
the red-headed river runt
went half-way hitting the
water with a splash and bobbing there. Back-lash! the
tangled line on my an antiback-lash reel became a
twisted mesh!
daddy shook his head. if
i had been allowed to cuss,
this was the time. i desperately tried to untangle the
line. it was a mess, and i was
embarrassed, when suddenly
the bait disappeared and the
fishing line became taut as a
big bass jumped out of the
water trying to spit out the
bait! i was shocked but continued trying to untie the
knotted line.
“Forget that,” daddy said.
“reel him in!” i did. it
weighed about two pounds.
the biggest fish i ever
caught on Wolf Creek .
today, since i no longer
have the strength to pullstart gasoline powered tools,
i’ve gone all-electric for chainsaws, leaf blowers and hedge
trimmers. Works fine until you
cut the extension cord. Yes, i’ve
done that a couple of times. Now
the biggest problem is tripping
over or getting entangled in the
cord and almost falling. i’m
dealing with three, hundred-foot
cords, but mostly use just one. A
mystery to me is, no matter how
carefully i wind up one of these
cords into a coil, when i want to
use it, it unwinds in a tangle. A
bigger mystery is sometimes
there’s a knot! on top of that,
invariably, the cord will catch on
a rock, limb, corner of the house,
or snare my foot while i’m trying to use it. the same with a
water hose.
it’s got to be a conspiracy!
And now the entanglement
of
Christmas
lights
approaches! Why me, Lord!

Fearing that Bush was reaching
for a weapon, Hill reached his
arm in the car only to have the
woman roll the window up on
him and began driving away.
Hill was drug about 8-10 feet as
he attempted to free his arm. the

and stopped the car and the officer drew his service weapon and

A time,” Hill noted.
As the woman drove off again,
Hill, freed from the car, gave pursuit.
With the roads wet from rain
and a hole in her tire, the woman
drove at high speeds, even passing an ambulance at one point,
Hill said.
Near the bridge at tower
Mountain, the woman turned on
a side road and suddenly exited
the car.
drawing his gun, Hill faced the
woman who suddenly acted as if
she was going to charge him.
Seeing now that the woman was
impaired and had no weapon, the
officer ordered her to stop and
she laid face down in some running water and was handcuffed.
As officers searched her car,
they heard the woman making
noise in the patrol unit. When she
grew silent, they went to investigate and found her with the seat
belt wrapped around her neck
three times.
“She strangled herself and
passed out,” Hill said, noting that
he was able to resuscitate the
woman, who was then transported to jail where she was checked
out by medical personnel.
inside the car, police found a
bottle of marijuana joints, a plastic container of the drug and a
half-gallon pickle jar full of marijuana buds.
“in over 20 years of law
enforcement, this is the first time
i’ve ever experienced an issue
like that,” Hill said, noting he had
only minor injuries.
the woman, who was
apologetic upon being arrested, will likely face charges of
driving on a suspended
license, resisting arrest, fleeing and assault, Hill said.

Before the 1900s, books were
very expensive. Students shared
schoolbooks if they were lucky enough
to have them.
Kids might not have had any books
other than the Bible. In pioneer
America, few people had more than
one or two books at home. No Harry
Potter for those kids!
After about
1850, most
students
got more
variety. “The
McGuffey
Reader”
came into classrooms, with poems,
plays, stories and speeches. Editions
got harder as the kids advanced.
Be thankful for school workers
Pioneer kids had to
help clean the school and
outdoor bathrooms. Even
third-graders helped chop
wood for the heating
stove.

Be thankful for running water
Be thankful for bathrooms
More than one out of every six
people in the world cannot get as
much fresh water as they need.
According to the World
(EALTH/RGANIZATIONMORE
than 894 million people
do not have enough safe
water for drinking, cooking
and cleaning needs.
People may have to walk
hours each day to get their
family’s water. Usually,
this job falls to girls.
Many girls are unable to go to school
because they have to spend so many
hours getting water.
People in the 1800s had to go to
an outdoor bathroom
called a privy.
Imagine how fun that
would be in the winter.
In the privy, a
person sat on a wooden
bench with a hole cut
in it. But first, people would circle
a stick in the hole, making sure no
spiders were waiting to come up and
bite them from below. Snakes might
have been on the privy floor.
In the night, people could use the
chamber pot kept under their bed.
But they’d have to clean it, too. Eww!
