WELCOME The Kerala Ayurveda Academy (KAA) invites you to embark on a journey into the world of Ayurveda, where you will discover a profound potential for health and well-being offered by a time-proven, harmonious and holistic healthcare system. Healthcare in the United States is changing. Health science has evolved enough to encompass our beliefs, our emotions, our behavior, our thoughts, our family and cultural systems, as well as the environmental context in which we live. All of these elements are relevant to our health. Ayurveda is a 5000 year old Indian system of healing that encompasses these aspects while offering solutions to achieve harmony of the Body, Mind and Spirit. Join us and get involved in this pioneering work that is transforming and reshaping our healthcare industry to a newer model of holistic health care for the 21st century. Kerala Ayurveda Academy is committed to offering the highest quality of education and services to our students so that they become the finest Ayurvedic health practitioners and educators in the future. KAA proudly offers the same course available in our classrooms via Distance Learning to accommodate a larger number of students around the country. Our aim is to maintain the authenticity of Ayurveda in the United States. The KAA curriculum is based on an Ayurvedic educational curriculum from Indian universities and is very challenging academically. Students will find studying at KAA intellectually stimulating and competitive. The programs encompass all fields of Ayurveda including Ayurvedic Philosophy, Herbology, Psychology, Ayurvedic dosha imbalance management, research, clinical practice, and clinical application. We have assembled the most qualified and experienced faculty to teach Ayurvedic principles. Most faculty members have Ayurvedic degrees from prestigious universities in India and 15 to 30 years of clinical experience. So, feel assured that you will receive an authentic Ayurvedic education. The program coordinators at each location are also very supportive and eager to assist students in any way they can. We at KAA congratulate you for your decision to join us and be a part of an inner circle of Ayurvedic practitioners who promote healing, Wellbeing and Wellness. Warm Regards, Dr. Jay Apte, Director Kerala Ayurveda Academy Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar Executive Director Kerala Ayurveda, US Page 3 of 41 Objectives • To maintain the authenticity and highest integrity of Ayurvedic Principles • To teach the Student to discern between Health and Disease and offer true holistic practices in healthcare to their clients • To maintain a highly competent and experienced faculty of Clinical Practitioners who are committed to upholding the highest standard of education • To offer a rich facility for clinical practice and research to our students during their term at KAA • To offer students the opportunity to serve the wellbeing of their clients using the powerful tenets of Ayurvedic Nutrition, Life Style, Herbology and Ayurvedic Psychology, as well as Meditation, Pranayama and the disciplines of Yoga • To give students the wisdom and principles of Ayurvedic Prognosis, Pathogenesis and Psychology along with a variety of cleansing and health building techniques (including Panchakarma and Rasayana) that they are equipped to make knowledgeable recommendations to balance the Body, Mind and Spirit The State Approved Institute Kerala Ayurveda Academy (KAA) is approved in California and Washington and is pending approval in New York State and Texas. Our academic programs meet the standards set in terms of facility, faculty qualifications, financial stability and student records in the states where we are approved. KAA is dedicated to spreading Ayurvedic knowledge and wisdom across the United States. The majority of our facilities include an Ayurvedic clinic, Panchakarma center, library, herb room and classroom. The Future for KAA Students This is the era of complementary medicine. According to a report developed by the Institute for Alternative Futures—Today, complementary and alternative approaches to health and medicine are among the fastest growing aspects of health care. In 1990, one-third of the U.S. population used some form of alternative approach to health care. By the year 2010, at least two-thirds will. Health science has reached a point where it is no longer accurate to discuss psychology versus biology, the mind versus the body or nature versus nurture. These processes are inextricably linked. Our beliefs, our emotions, our behavior, our thoughts, our family and cultural systems, as well as the environmental context in which we live, are all as relevant to our health as our genetic inheritance and our physiology. Interestingly, complementary and alternative approaches such as Ayurveda, oriental medicine and homeopathy already have extensive knowledge of the individual differences built into their diagnostic and therapeutic systems. We must expect these complementary modes of analysis to become integrated into conventional care. This is the perfect time for Ayurvedic graduates. They have a unique opportunity in this day and age to create very successful careers. Licensed health care practitioners can utilize their Ayurvedic knowledge to enhance their current practice. Massage therapists and body workers can open Panchakarma centers. Students interested in health and beauty might start Ayurvedic spa and beauty centers, or wellness centers. Freelance writers may start Ayurvedic publications. Research savvy students may get involved in Ayurvedic research projects—The Office of Alternative Medicine funds many research projects in holistic health care. Business entrepreneurs might develop Ayurvedic herbal products, food packages, or even Ayurvedic cosmetics. Students in academics may get into teaching or may want to deepen their education so they might pursue in-depth studies. It is really up to the graduating student to invent or discover new avenues. KAA offers advanced classes to further their education and also offers programs at our Kerala Ayurveda Academic Facilities in Cochin and Bangalore, India. Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 4 of 41 What Our Students Have to Say I am thrilled to be having this experience...it is way more "moving" then I could have anticipated and I wish to thank you and everyone who is helping me along the way. I embrace the gift and always wish to communicate the gratefulness when it shines so brightly. Best to you. ~Suzanne Tugman, Current Student The certified practitioner program offered by the Kerala Ayurveda Academy in Seattle has been very informative, and professionally delivered. The instructors have been outstanding and the program overall is of very high quality. The quality of the DVD's is excellent and provides a great alternative to attending class in person. ~Diana Lurie, Current Student Professor, University of Montana Why wasn’t I born in India? I sat through class the entire weekend and all I could think about was how happy I was that I’ve finally found what I’ve been looking for after so many years. I just kept saying to myself how this “fits” me. I woke up yesterday thinking about my Constitution and all I want to do is cry from experiencing such a joy in finding this program. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for your vision and bringing it to me. ~ T. J., 2007 Graduate My experience at the Academy has been nothing short of wonderful in each and every regard. In conversation related to KAA, I repeatedly find myself using the same adjectives… educational, enjoyable, practical and indispensable. Over the past year and a half, I have sincerely enjoyed not only learning the philosophy and practice of Ayurveda, but also witnessing firsthand its benefits as I began applying that, which I learned in school. As this practice progressed, I watched my relationship with family, friends and myself blossom to levels I never could have imagined. KAA has taught me that Ayurveda is truly a way of life, a balanced life and a better life. It is with excitement that I graduate, eager to begin educating and healing others just as I’ve been educated and healed over the past 18 months. ~ Kari Jansen, 2006 Graduate I feel that I want to share it, that my year with the Academy was really fantastic. I brag about your program any chance I am given because people are asking me how I can be doing as much as I am doing. The only way I could do it was because of the truly quality teaching that I received at the Academy from Dr. Apte and the others of course. I am happy to and would love to give recommendations for your program, to any perspective student. ~ Patricia Callahan, 2004 Graduate Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 5 of 41 Program Overview Learn Ayurveda—Experience Wellness—Help Others Kerala Ayurveda Academy represents the integration of several national Ayurvedic Institutions, including the Ayurveda Institute of America (AIA), the Aloha Ayurveda Academy (AAA) and the AYU Ayurvedic Academy. It is the first institute in US to provide authentic Ayurvedic programs throughout the country. We currently offer programs in San Francisco CA, Foster City CA, Los Angeles CA, San Diego CA and Seattle WA and are awaiting approval for locations in both Austin TX and New York NY. Ayurveda, the wisdom (Veda) of life (Ayu), is a part of the world's oldest Vedic spiritual system. According to Ayurveda, harmony at the level of the Body, Mind and Spirit is true health. Ayurveda emphasizes a focus on the individual rather than a disease. The concept of Body Constitution distinguishes Ayurveda from many other healing sciences. Knowledge of Ayurvedic science in today’s world is essential. Conventional medicine has its strength in dosha imbalance management and treatment. Ayurvedic science is aimed at the preservation of health and prevention of disease by establishing balance and harmony through nutrition, herbs, meditation, and daily routines. Conventional medicine is a science that takes care of the physical body and its systems. Ayurvedic science provides knowledge to unfold the reality beyond the physical body and achieve harmony of Body-MindSpirit. The World Health Organization recognizes Ayurveda as a complete natural health care system. How will Ayurvedic training help me? If you are seeking improvement of your health or looking to find alternative remedies to manage your disease, learning Ayurveda is valuable. If you are a Yoga teacher, massage therapist, chiropractor, nurse or physician wanting to serve your clients better, training in Ayurveda can provide significant benefits. The training offered by KAA will help you integrate Ayurvedic wellness principles and practices into your personal and professional lives. Unlimited opportunities await the Ayurvedic Practitioner in the field of natural holistic health care, public education, research and writing. As an Ayurvedic practitioner you will help others in their healing process as a teacher, wellness coach, doctor and/or healer. Why Choose Kerala Ayurveda Academy for My Ayurvedic Training? Internship Client Testimonial The past three months have been quite an experience. I really feel that I am becoming the same person I was 6-7 years ago. We all have much to learn from one another and I learned to be much more mindful in my daily practices from these students of Ayurveda. The consultation from the intern was the first time I heard the word Ayurveda. They did an excellent job of explaining what Ayurveda is and how it works and I can’t believe I started following all the diet guidelines recommended and started taking herbs. I not only lost 15 pounds but I started enjoying each moment of my life even going to grocery store. Instead of telling my students what to do I started asking them ’How can I help you.’ I feel great. ~D.D., A Happy Client Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 12 of 41 Internship, Through the Eyes of a Student Of all the multitudes of information I learned while studying at the Academy, I got the most out of my internship. While the classes were fantastic and taught me many of the Ayurvedic basics, the internship allowed me to put this information into action. By doing this, I got to see first hand, just how to read a client. It was also helpful to be with other students. It's so easy to read about a client on a piece of paper and have all of the important information given to you, so you can decide how to treat the client, but when you actually see them, you have to be able to gather the useful information. The most exciting part of the internship was the follow-up consultation. It was very interesting to hear the outcome of client’s hard work over the course of a month. Spending this time with many different clients allowed me to expand my knowledge of diet, lifestyle, herbs and exercise and how they affect each individual differently. I have to say, I felt very nervous the first time I went in, to have a consultation with a client, but as time went on, even in my nervousness I was able to gain confidence. This knowledge will stick with me my whole life. Thank you so much for offering this. ~S.S., Former Student Total Hours for the AWP program Classroom hours 380 Special projects 100 Externship 120 Trip to India 200 Home studies 200 Total 1000 Hours Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 13 of 41 KAA 211—20-Day Advanced Training in India Also Included is a Field Trip to: Ayurvedic College, Ayurvedic Clinic, Ayurvedic Manufacturing Unit, Panchakarma Center, Ayurvedic Herb Plantation, Naturopathy & Yoga Institute. Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 19 of 41 Academic Policies and Frequently Asked Questions 1. How much do the programs cost? The entire tuition for the AWC program is $5000.00 and for the AWP program is $8000.00. There are multiple payment plans for easy payment that may alter this final total. 2. Is it legal to practice Ayurveda in all of the states? A bill has been passed in five states (California, Minnesota, Okalahoma, Idaho, and Rhode Island) to allow the practice of alternative medicine, which includes Ayurveda. Currently, Iowa and New Mexico are working on passing the bill. The National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) is working on getting Ayurveda licensed in the United States. 3. Does each state regulate the practice of Ayurvedic sciences? No. • • Ayurvedic practitioners are not licensed in the United States, and its practice is not regulated by state or federal agencies. Standards of competency are set by individual schools that have received state approval. Ayurvedic practitioners in the United States are taught how to practice legally within a limited scope of practice so they are not viewed as practicing medicine without a license. We might say that Ayurveda's current status in the US is analogous to the Chinese medical profession during its early years in the 1970s. While each state does not regulate the practice of Ayurvedic medicine itself, some aspects of Ayurvedic practice may fall within the scope of professions that are regulated. Students and graduates of the academy should be careful not to allow their practice to overlap one of those regulated professions unless they are licensed in that particular profession. Please contact your local state representative for more information about regulations in your area. 4. Can I practice Ayurveda outside of California? Yes, Ayurveda is currently practiced all over the United States. 5. Practicing Ayurveda in the US • While none of the US states currently have Ayurvedic practitioners or physicians as primary care physicians, many of these well-trained professionals utilize their education and skills in combination with other healthcare related credentials. • Yoga Instructors, Massage Therapists, Registered Nurses, Nutritionists/Dietitians, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Medical Doctors and other healthcare professionals are recognizing and utilizing the benefits of educational training in Ayurveda. • NAMA is currently working on developing educational standards, scope of practice, and related materials to support future licensing initiatives throughout the US. • While many Academy graduates use their Ayurvedic education to enhance preexisting professional careers, Kerala Ayurveda Academy currently does not offer placement assistance. 6. Is there an Ayurvedic association which links other practitioners and students together? Yes, there is National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine (CAAM). 7. Is there an alumni association? Can I contact previous students? Yes, we can provide you with the contact information of several students for you to talk to. 8. How will I take the exams with Distant Learning? We have a program set-up through Web-Ex which will allow you to take the exams. 9. How will I get hands-on experience through Distant Learning? We will set-up a separate 3-day weekend where you will be able to come to campus and get necessary hands-on experience. We also recommend that you attend 3-4 classes on-campus. 10. How will I complete the internship through Distant Learning? We will set up clinicals in several states for you to complete a week-long internship. You will be able to do the follow-ups on-line. 11. I’m not a health care professional; Can I still earn a diploma and practice Ayurvedic medicine? Sure you can. The primary prerequisite for the program is a passion for Ayurveda. KAA welcomes students with a bachelor’s degree in any field. The minimum admission requirement is a high school diploma with college level Kerala Ayurveda Academy Course Catalog Page 20 of 41 courses in English, Basic Anatomy and Physiology. If you have not taken Anatomy and Physiology before, you can finish the requirement within six (6) months of your start date. 12. How many of your graduates practice Ayurvedic medicine? There are different ways students utilize their Ayurvedic education. Many of the students incorporate Ayurvedic knowledge in their current practice such as Doctors, nurses, massage therapists, etc. Few start a career manufacturing and selling various Ayurvedic products, while others start a health counseling practice. Studying Ayurveda is very different than studying mathematics, accounting, or computers. You will learn about life studying Ayurveda. So your actual studying will happen during the day, when you are interacting with other people. If you read the text material for an hour to hour and a half every morning (early morning – ideally) you will do well. What you read in the morning, you will experience during the day. Observing other people and interacting with them is the way you will learn true Ayurveda. 13. Are there monthly tests? I feel very anxious about taking tests. You should not feel anxious about tests at all. They are for you (and us) to know what you have learned and what you didn’t so we can keep you up to speed. We want to make sure our students understand all the Ayurvedic concepts clearly. Ayurveda is about human health, so a clear understanding is vital. 14. I will be traveling from out of town to attend classes, is there housing assistance available? There are a few hotels near the campuses where students can book a room for the weekend. In the past, some students have made good friends with classmates and stayed with them on those weekends. 15. When can I visit the school? Do you have open houses or visitor’s events? We arrange an open house in July and August of every year. We also allow our prospective students to sit in with the current class, so that they get a feel of the classroom setting and the topic. With a prior appointment, students come by and talk to the program coordinator about the details of the program. We are here to assist our students in any way we can. 16. After I graduate is there career planning and placement? How much can I expect to earn? KAA posts job openings as they become available on the student services bulletin board. There will be no refund if the student decides to withdraw after 60% of the classes are over. A written notice from the students, about the cancellation will be required. A telephone call about cancellation or absenteeism for the classes will not be considered as true cancellation. In such cases, student will not receive the refund for that period. The refund will be processed within 30 days from the day the Institute receives the official written notice of cancellation from the student. The refund check will be mailed to the official address of the student. In case student decides to withdraw during the program, before the 60% of the classes are over, following will be the refund calculation: Refund Calculation (Total Tuition Paid) – (Payment Plan Monthly Ratio x Number of Classes Attended) = Total Refund Example A student decides to withdraw after four (4) classes and if he/she has paid the full tuition, the refund will be as follows: Tuition paid 4 (Number of classes attended) x 455.00 $5000.00 – $1820.00 $ 5000.00 $ 1820.00 $ 3180.00 Total Refund $ 3180.00 Similar calculations will be applied for the AWP program tuition refund. To be eligible for STRF, you must be a “California resident” and reside in California at "the time the enrollment agreement is signed. Students who are temporan1y residing in California for the sole purpose of pursuing an education, specifically those who hold student visas, are not considered a California resident. If you do not receive notice from the Council, you have 4 years from the date of closure to file a STRF application. If a judgment is obtained you must file a STRF application within two years of the final judgment. It is important that you keep copies of the enrollment agreement, financial papers, receipts or any other information that documents the monies paid to the school. Questions regarding the STRF may be directed to the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. 400 R street Ste # 5000 Sacramento.
