Reflections
The Baptism of the Lord
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth
of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On
coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn
open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And
a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son;
with you I am well pleased." - Mk 1:9-11

"I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his
sandals." That was a lowly job. Removing someone's sandals
back in the days when everyone walked everywhere on
dusty, sandy desert ground was a dirty task. So when John
the Baptist said he wasn't even worthy for that humble duty,
he was emphasizing an important point.
John understood Jesus' real identity. He knew that this was
not just another good man, not just a wise teacher or a gifted
leader. John realized that Jesus was truly God-made-man.
And because of this, the prophet also comprehended how
perfect Jesus was. In relation to this perfection, John honestly
acknowledged his own sinfulness with this analogy about the
sandals. But look what happened: even though John
proclaimed that "one mightier than I is coming after me,"
Jesus showed up at the Jordan River and asked John to
baptize him! Jesus humbled himself by going through this
ritual of cleansing and purification, even though he didn't
need to. John may have thought himself unworthy, but that
didn't stop Jesus from coming to him.
Jesus wants to come to us too. Not because we have "earned"
his love or because we are "worthy" of some great honor, but
simply because he loves us. God sent his Son to us to be one
of us, to walk among us, to care for us and guide us. When
we were baptized, he counted us among his beloved children
in a special way, but that joyful bond is not a thing of the
past. By our baptism we are always his children, even when
we may be disobedient or belligerent ones. His love is not
calculated or quantified; it is a free gift. May we appreciate
this gift enough to show our gratitude by a life well lived.

Dear Parishioners,
New Year Greetings of Peace, Prosperity and happiness
from your school family. Our students came back excited
and ready to get back to work… so we move forward to
celebrating life, learn with passion, help with commitment,
love and serve others unconditionally and always put our
faith in God.
In St. Columba , we know that there is always
something we can do that matters and will make a
difference. So we start we ourselves and our school,
extend it to our families and the community….
We look forward to this season that gives us moments of
particular beauty—as a new snowfall, a sparkling ice
covered tree or in the discovering of a bright red cardinal
perched on a branch in a snow white landscape.
We look forward to what January will bring, celebrations
of Martin Luther King Day and Catholic Schools week. We
also look forward to our 8th Graders participating in the
March for Life Rally on January 22nd. We will join 20,000
friends from around the USA to make a stand for life.

THE BEST WAY TO LIVE
How is the best way to live? The
great minds of every age have
pondered this question. Are you
living your best life? Matthew
Kelly answers this question and
addresses the outpouring of the
Holy Spirit in the great
sacrament of Confirmation.
Parishioner Comments
Matthew Kelly has a unique way of being able to talk to any
age group and create participation and understanding to
enhance our faith in Christ and in His Church. His use of
the Willie Wonka in the Chocolate Factory movie to make a
key point is this presentation was brilliant. John - Taylors,
SC.

LECTOR OPENINGS
VOCATIONS CORNER
Have you ever experienced a desire to proclaim God’s
Holy Word during weekday or Sunday Masses? If so,
God may indeed be nudging you to become a Minister
of the Word — a Lector. The lector proclaims God’s
own words through the words of Scripture. Those who
accept the call of this ministry are presumed to be
people of faith and eager to serve the Christian
community. The Lector ministry is open to any
parishioner, male or female, including teenagers.
Anyone interested in the Lector ministry, please
contact Gloria King at 301-248-2924.
Prayer for Vocations
Loving God, you call all who believe in you
to grow perfect in love by following in the footsteps
of Christ your Son.
Call from among us more men and women
who will serve you as religious.
By their way of life, may they provide a convincing sign
of your Kingdom for the Church and the whole world.
We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Gracious and loving God, help the
men and women of our parish to hear the
call to serve in the Archdiocese of Washington.
Our needs are great and our people
thirst for your presence.
Open the hearts of many, raise up
faithful servants of the Gospel, dedicated,
holy priests, sisters, brothers and deacons,
who will spend themselves for your people and their needs.
Bless those who are serving now
with courage and perseverance.
Grant that many will be inspired by their
example and faith.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
MUSIC MINISTRY
If you are interested in singing with any of the

WHAT IS THE NEW EVANGELIZATION?
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
“Could you not keep watch with Me
for one hour?” Mt 26:40
Our monthly Eucharistic Adoration, scheduled every third
Saturday after the 5:00 p.m. Mass, has been moved this month to
Saturday, January 24, 2015.
Come and spend intimate time with Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament.
The New Evangelization calls each of us to deepen our faith,
believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the
Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls all Catholics to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. In a special way, the New Evangelization is focused on 're-proposing'
the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith.
Pope Benedict XVI called for the re-proposing of the Gospel
"to those regions awaiting the first evangelization and to those
regions where the roots of Christianity are deep but who have
experienced a serious crisis of faith due to secularization."1
The New Evangelization invites each Catholic to renew their
relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church.
"It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is
the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it
springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth
large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its
shade." Mk 4: 31-32
