19-23 September 2014
Background
Since 1981, the organization of Asia Masters Athletics
has been conducting the Asia Masters Athletics
Championships (AMAC) – a competition that
provides a chance for former national athletes aged
35 to 95 years old to test their abilities once again
and demonstrate their skills in the sport of athletics.
The Philippines has been participating in the Asian
Masters Athletics Championships (AMAC) since 1996.
The Filipino athletes have always performed
exceptionally well in the field of athletics. Our past
and more recent achievements have proven that the
Philippine Masters Track and Field Team is still a top
contender in this event.
Past athletics medalists have given pride and glory to
the country, and as they grow older, they continue
to bring honor to the Philippines as they made
numerous triumphs in Asia and World Masters
Athletics Championships duly sanctioned by the
prestigious International Association of Athletics
Federations (IAAF).

Team Highlights
The 18th edition of the AMA Championships held in Kitakami City, Iwate
Prefecture, Japan from 19-23 September 2014 saw the participation of 19
athletes with 2 team officials. After the week-long event, despite the freezing
climate of about 10-12 degrees, Team Philippine Masters garnered 3 Golds,
2 Silvers and 5 Bronzes for a total of 10 Medals.
Margarito Baniqued, a Gintong Alay program recipient in the 80’s opened the
team’s campaign by winning the Bronze Medal in the 5,000 M Walk (M5054). In the early going, Erlinda Lavandia salvaged another Bronze medal in
Hammer Throw (W60-64) heaving 21.27 meters in the process. Linda
admitted that it was her first-ever attempt in her almost 40 year career to
participate in the event and never prepared for it.
On 21 Sept. Ms. Lavandia captured Silver Medals in both Shot Put and Discus
Throw events for W60-64 age category. The following day, she outclassed
Japan’s Matsuoka Kanako and Kobo Tomiko in Javelin Throw by winning
GOLD and retaining the Game’s Record she posted in 2012. Followed by
John Lozada’s Bronze Medal win in 800M race for M40-44. The day’s
campaign ended with golden performance courtesy of Emerson Obiena’s
4.00M finished in Pole Vault event for M45-49.
Multi-event specialist, Elma Muros-Posadas, attempted to contribute to the
over-all showing of Team Philippine Masters as she has done in the past.
However, her continuous training went to naught when she injured her ankle
in her first attempt in long jump eventually withdrawing her entry in 800 M
hurdles and 4 x 100 M relay.
The last day saw the winning performances of the relay teams. Mesdames
Victorina Calma, Elenita Punelas, Salve Bayaban and Jeanette Obiena
clocked 58 Minutes and 56 seconds to win the Bronze Medal in 4 x 100 MR
(W40-44). This was followed by another Bronze Medal performance of 4
Minutes 6.58 seconds in 4 x 400 MR (M40-44) courtesy of Julio Bayaban,
John Lozada, Edward Kho and Emerson Obiena.
Danilo Fresnido, an enlisted personnel and former SEA Gamer ended the
campaign with a big bang plunging his spear with a distance of 63.58 Meters,
thus, winning the GOLD and establishing new AMAC’s record in Javelin
Throw (M40-44).

MANILA, Philippines - Danilo Fresnido closed out Team Philippines’
campaign in the 18th Asia Masters Athletics Championships with a
victory in javelin throw, delivering the country’s third gold in record
fashion in Kitakami, Japan last Tuesday.
Fresnido set a new Asian Masters record with a heave of 60.48 meters
in the 40-years-old division, complementing the first gold medal won by
Erlinda Lavandia, also in javelin for 60-64 years-old last Monday.
Emerson Obiena also won a gold in the 45-year old men’s pole vault
event.
The three-gold haul thus matched the target set by the lean squad of 22
athletes whose campaign was backed by El Lobo Energy Drink, San
Miguel Corporation, Petron, Sportscore, L-Time Studio, Soma, Accel ,
PCSO, PSC and POC.
The silver medal winners were Victorina Calma, Len Punelas, Salve
Bayaban and Jeanette Obiena in the 4x100 meters (W-40) and John
Lozada, Julio Bayaban, Emerson Obiena and Edward Kho in the 4x400
meters.
The team also won two silver and five bronze medals.
Meanwhile, team leaders Ariel Paredes and Paul Ycasas dedicated their
performance to the departed Manny Ibay, who led the National Masters
and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines (NMSAAP) to new
heights before his demise.
