DEMCHICK
MARVIN N. DEMCHICK
Mentor, Visionary, Fundraiser
Born May 26, 1924 Died April 13, 2012
Born and raised in Philadelphia, the eldest of three brothers, MARVIN DEMCHICK graduated
from Northeast High School and attended Philadelphia College of Art (PCA, now the University of The Arts). During that time, he enlisted in the United States Army to serve in World
War II. He served under General George Patton as a First Lieutenant in the 32nd Anti-Aircraft
Artillery Group. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded several decorations
and citations, including the Purple Heart and two Bronze Service Stars.
MR. DEMCHICK attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, from
which he graduated in 1949. During his junior year at Wharton, he earned the status of Phi
Beta Kappa.
His professional career included accounting, insurance, and up until the last few months of
his life, he continued to be involved in financial planning and business consulting. He was a
constant source of support and wisdom to those who relied on him; he was a true mentor to
many. During his career of over 60 years, his greatest passion was finding innovative
start-up companies and helping them develop and succeed.
In his determined efforts to help his youngest granddaughter, his proudest accomplishment
was being one of the founders of AIM, The Academy In Manayunk, a school for children with
learning differences. MR. DEMCHICK was the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AIM
and then became Chairman Emeritus. “He was instrumental in creating the vision, securing
the funds and providing the leadership that has created the foundation for AIM”, Executive
Director PAT ROBERTS and Associate Director NANCY BLAIR wrote in an announcement to
the school community.
MR. DEMCHICK was an active and devoted member of the Jewish community, locally and
worldwide. He was Past President of Congregation Adath Jeshurun, the synagogue to
which his family belonged for over 100 years. He played a major fundraising role in the Federation of Allied Jewish Appeal for many years, serving as General Chairman and Board of
Trustee life member. He was also a Board of Trustee member of the Abramson Center and
on the Board of Trustees of Ben Gurion University. He donated generously to the State of Israel, including contributing to the Soviet Jewry program, helping to bring over a thousand
Jews from the Soviet Union to Israel.
He was very active on the Sutton Terrace Board of Directors, where he resided for over 20
years and most recently became the President of the Residents Council at The Hill At Whitemarsh, where he lived for the past two years.
MR. DEMCHICK was married to his beloved wife MILDRED for almost 68 years. His devotion
and love for his wife was unmatched and immeasurable.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters, SHELLI GLASS, PHYLLIS WAGNER and WENDY DEMCHICK-ALLOY and five grandchildren, DAN, SAMANTHA, JAKE, ZOE
and TESS. He is also survived by his youngest brother BOB and predeceased by his younger
brother HERB. MR. DEMCHICK will leave a powerful lifelong legacy for his family of love and
commitment to each other and to the community at large.

LUDWIG
GILBERT PAUL LENETT, of Egg Harbor
Township, NJ. Beloved husband, Father,
Grandfather and Great Grandfather and friend
to many, died Friday evening at the age of 80
after battling numerous health issues. During
his working years, GIL was a gifted salesman
possessing the ability to connect with not
only with buyers but with people of all ages
and backgrounds. GIL was especially popular with children and throughout his lifetime
he proudly proclaimed to be a 12 year old
trapped inside an aging body. GIL had a
wonderful singing voice and it would take little prompting to make him burst out in song
to the delight of those within range. GIL
would endure many difficulties throughout
his days but his story was one of strength,
courage and ultimately triumph over the challenges his faced. Evidence of this could be
seen and felt in his presence and was further
evidenced by all the smiles and laughter he
brought with him wherever he went. He had
an irrepressible spirit of joy, lightheartedness
and good humor. It just felt good being
around him. GIL will be missed by the multitudes of family and friends he collected over
the years and his legacy of good is best expressed with the following quote from one of
his favorite movies, The Wizard of Oz in the
scene where the Wizard gives the Tin Man
council. He said, "Remember Tin Man, a
heart is not judged by how much you love...
but by how much you are loved by others".
He leaves behind his beloved wife BARBARA

IRVING LUDWIG
Violinist, Conductor & Mentor
IRVING LUDWIG passed away peacefully,
surrounded by his family, on March 20th after a courageous 19-year battle with lymphoma. In 1947, he began his orchestral career with the National Symphony and, at the
age of 20, he was one of the youngest
members
to
join
the
Philadelphia
Orchestra. IRVING LUDWIG was a member
of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 39
years. His tenure was interrupted by the
Korean war, when he served as concertmaster of the US Navy Band in Washington, D.C.,
and met his future wife, MARTHA.
During his tenure with the Philadelphia
Orchestra, he taught privately and at the
Settlement Music School. Students and colleagues admired him for his humor, deep
commitment, and analytic approach to music. He was the founding conductor of the
New Y Chamber Players, a chamber orchestra consisting of fellow colleagues, Curtis Institute and area music students, and amateurs. In 1991, he was appointed music director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra. LUDWIG noted; “This orchestra is like a
family. We’re glued together because of the
music. It’s the combination of the music and
the friendships that makes us such a special
group.” His passion, drive and personal connection with the LSO members instilled a
unique corps d’esprit within one of most respected orchestras in the Philadelphia area.
Music, family and friends were inextricable
elements throughout his life. He taught both
of his sons who are now accomplished musicians. MICHAEL is a virtuoso violinist following in his father’s footsteps, as an international soloist and concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. MARK is a violist in the Boston Symphony and a Holocaust
music scholar.
An avid chess player, on the historic 1973
Philadelphia Orchestra tour to China, IRVING
twice beat the noted music critic and chess
writer Harold Schonberg. IRVING is survived
by his loving wife MARTHA of 61 years, two
sons MARK and MICHAEL, granddaughter
SARAH, and two sisters BEATRICE and
BERTHA.

Although nothing can replace the gaping hole
your death has left in my life, I want to thank
you for all the ways in which you blessed
my life.
Because mixed together with all of my sadness there is a great joy knowing you were
my mom.
I will remember your smile, your touch, your
laughter, your kindness, your love.
Thank you for the time we shared, for the
love you gave, for the wisdom you spread. I
will always treasure the lessons you taught
