HOWARD RICHARD, a prominent trial lawyer
in Delaware County, passed away on October
29, 2011 at the age of 90. He grew up in
Perth Amboy, NJ. The middle son of LOUIS
and ANNE (née RICHARD) WEISBERG, he attended UCLA and then Rutgers Law School.
A member of the “Greatest Generation”, he
fought in World War II and then returned
home to Philadelphia where he began the
practice of law. He founded his own law practice in Delaware County, and built it into one
of the largest and most successful firms in
the County. His legal career spanned 5 decades. Widely regarded as a topnotch trial lawyer, he won many cases on behalf of “the little guy”. He also developed a specialty in
public sector labor law, representing police
and firefighters across Pennsylvania in wage
and benefit negotiations. His greatest source
of pride came from his success in addressing
what he saw as the imbalance of bargaining
power from which our first responders suffered. He conceived, drafted and shepherded
through the Pennsylvania legislature a law
known as Act 111, or the Binding Arbitration
Act, which gave equal power to police and
firefighters in collective bargaining through
the use of neutral arbitrators. The law is still
in effect today. He was married for 66 years
to MAE RICHARD, a lyricist in the NYC theater community, who passed away in 2009. He
is survived by his two loving children, LARRY
and BARBARA RICHARD. He led a life full of
joy and accomplishment, filled with loving relationships including his brother, NORMAN
RICHARD his late brother, MORTY RICHARD;
his sister-in-law, MIDGE GELBER; his daughter-in-law, D'ARCY LYNESS RICHARD; his
son-in-law, the late LAMAR PUGH; and many
other family, friends and colleagues. With his
many contributions to better society, it is his
love, humor, and generosity that will be
sorely missed. Services will be held at the

ESTHER RODA, a retired owner of the
woman's clothing store died October 18,
2011 at Aria Hospital - Torresdale Division
after a stroke. She was 78 and lived in Delaire Landing in Northeast Philadelphia.
MRS. RODA was born and grew up in Cuba.
She married MANUEL RODA and had 3 children. While bringing up her family, MRS.
RODA worked as a Hebrew teacher in the
Hebrew day school and was a clothing buyer
for her family's small department store at the
same time. After Fidel Castro came to power,
ESTHER and MANUEL saw how the country
was changing and decided to leave. However, diplomatic relations with the US had already been cut and therefore, they could not
emigrate to the US. They chose Israel.
On the night before the Jewish Holiday of
Yom Kippur, they closed the business as if
the business was closed for the Jewish holiday and with 1 suitcase apiece, the RODA
family left the country. Because of governmental restrictions on money in Cuba at that
time, they left with no money at all. Upon arriving in Israel and getting settled by the Israeli government, MRS. RODA immediately
took a job with the Wingate Institute in Netanya where she worked as a secretary as her
husband worked in the Israeli Diamond industry. However, after living in Israel for 6
1/2 years, the RODA's still had limited savings and decided that they would make plans
to emigrate to the US. Their plans, however,
got delayed with the advent of the Six Day
War. But after the Six Day War was over, the
RODA's left for the US. The family settled in
Oxford Circle in 1967 and immediately
ESTHER found a job as a secretary in the
Physical Therapy Department at the University of Pennsylvania to help provide for her
family. However, after working for 5 or 6
years, MRS. RODA wanted to open her own
clothing store and with a small loan from a
friend opened L & L Fashions on Willits Road
in the Northeast. A few years later, she
closed L & L and bought Claire's Smart Fashions on the 3100 block of Kensington Avenue
in Kensington. They later bought a second
store and opened Roda's Fashions 2 stores
away. She retired shortly after an auto accident in the early 1990's. Once she retired,
she became active in her local chapter of Hadassah and was always a member of a synagogue. When she lived in Oxford Circle, she
was a member of Beth Emeth Cong., then Oxford Circle Jewish Community Center. When
they moved to Delaire Landing, the joined
Temple Menorah-Keneseth Chai and lastly,
Ohev Shalom of Bucks County. After joining
Ohev Shalom, she joined their senior group,
Hazzak, and was an active participant in their
activities. MRS. RODA also spoke 4 languages: Spanish, English, Yiddish, and Hebrew. She was married for almost 62 years,
to the love of her life, MANUEL, She was the
mother of LUBA KELLMAN (DAN), RACHEL
GOLDSTEIN (CARL), and ISAAC RODA. She
was the sister of HILDA KOZOLCHYK and

Dearest Mother,
We haven’t seen you,

Your words of wisdom
and happy memories remain with us.
We still “talk” to you and
miss you very much.
Our love continues.
Sadly Missed By
Children, Grandchildren, and
Great Grandchildren
We plan for our weddings, when to start a family
and our retirement. We also buy car insurance,
life insurance and prepare a will, but too often
we don’t consider pre-planning our funeral.
We leave the decisions about a funeral to a
time when we are highly emotional and least
likely to consider all the choices. That’s why
we offer pre-arrangements, so that we can
guide you through those decisions and you
can think clearly about what you want, and
|your family can be assured your wishes have
been met. Call today for a pre-arrangement
guide or consultation.

WASSERMAN
The family of
LEONARD WASSERMAN
is overwhelmed at the outpouring of love,
respect and admiration for our beloved
husband, father, grandfather, uncle and
friend. He worked with passion to create a
new paradigm in whatever issue or field of
activity he became involved in, whether it
was family, business or charitable interests.
He was a loving husband and father to
four children and their spouses and
seven grandchildren. His gentle manner, his
generous attitude and his open and honest
approach to performing “Tikkun Olam” were
inspiring. He did thorough research on any
project he undertook and involved others
to join him in whichever activity he was
pursuing. He enjoyed people from all walks
of life and created lasting friendships with
them. We thank the many people who
responded with calls, visits, notes and
charitable contributions who shared their
stories and feelings with us. He will be
sorely missed.
