LEON DWORKIN, 92, surrounded by family, passed away quietly on August 20, 2012. Born on December 9, 1919 to Russian immigrants MORRIS and ROSE DWORKIN, LEON'S life was shaped by those unique American experiences which made him typical of what is often described as the greatest Generation. A product of the great depression, MR. DWORKIN learned generosity from his parents who gave away food to needy neighbors from their grocery store in the Camden New Jersey. After graduating at the top of his class from Camden high school he attended University of Pennsylvania where he received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Not long after his graduation, on December 7th 1941, the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor prompting MR. DWORKIN to work at a Grumman Aircraft factory in Baltimore as an inspector helping to manufacture airplanes for the war effort. In 1942 despite a military deferment and pleas from his parents, he, like his brother HARRY, would volunteer for the U.S. Army Air force. LEON attained a rank of second lieutenant and as a B-17 pilot flew bombing raids with the 8th air force out of England; LEON flew 17 missions over Germany. After the war he became an engineer at Sinclair oil refinery in Marcus Hook where he worked on and designed many techniques to transform the facility from the batch processing of petroleum to that of a continuous process. A few years later, LEON attended a synagogue dance in Camden New Jersey and met his future wife, HELEN RENEE LONG; they were married on September 19, 1948. On January 2, 1950 MR. DWORKIN'S normal life took an extraordinary turn which put his character to test. While on a ferry from Bridgeport N.J. to Chester, PA, the boat collided with a freighter causing an elderly man to be thrown into the icy waters of the Delaware River. Without concern of his own life, LEON DWORKIN jumped from the upper deck into the swirling river to save the man. MR. DWORKIN received both the Sinclair AA award and accommodation from the Delaware River Port Authority and U.S. Coast Guard. Over the following years when asked about this experience, LEON would recount that while waiting for a boat to retrieve him from the water (as his arms and fingers became too swollen and numb to wrap a sling around himself) he was certain he would not make it. Despite the circumstances MR. DWORKIN never let go of the unconscious man and kept his face out of the water. A few years after this event, MR. DWORKIN with a friend, ROBERT CETLIN, started a scrap metal company, Salem Iron & Metal, which eventually located and operated on the West End of Chester. This business enabled MR. DWORKIN to raise a family with three boys, LAWRENCE, GERALD and ROSS and help them start careers as a lawyer, physician and engineer. In addition to raising his own children, MR. DWORKIN also donated time to the B'nai Brith Youth Organization as an advisor to teenage boys for almost 20 years. Upon his retirement in 1986, MR. DWORKIN spent much of his time doing what he loved best, swimming on the beaches of Ventnor New Jersey, filming video of his family, spending time with his wife, and continually being with his three children, their wives and his 8 grandchildren JONATHON, IAN, AMANDA, ERICA, LEAH, MYLES, MARA JO and ZACHARY and his sister BETTY who also survives him. DEATH NOTICES DEATH NOTICES KOFF KUPFERBERG JEROME KOFF August 3, 2012 San Francisco CA JEROME was born on 23 July 1923 the second of two children of LEAH RACHEL ROSENTHAL and MYER HERMAN KOFF. JEROME and his older brother MANUEL, who died in World War II while serving his country, grew up in Collingdale, Delaware County, PA. The family later moved to Bryn Mahr, where MYER purchased a grocery store. Tired of snow and ice, the family moved to Los Angeles in 1946, settling first in Alhambra, then in North Hollywood. In 1947, JEROME married JOANN DORMAN and they had two children. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1967. JEROME took the 5th Commandment seriously. After his father died, he cared for his mother until her death from cancer. He then cared for his mother’s sister, RICCA ROSENTAL JIMENEZ, until her death. Later, he cared for one of his elderly neighbors. He helped her with daily chores, allowing her to live independently for many years. JEROME spent many years of his life in Seal Beach Leisure World. He made many friends there and served on the board of directors. He cared deeply for Leisure World and he helped make the decisions that improved life for all Leisure World residents. JEROME will be dearly missed by his daughter MARILYN KOFF of North Las Vegas, NV, by his son JACOB (and JEANETTE) and by their two children NATHAN KOFF and RACHEL KOFF, all of San Francisco, CA. A special thank you is due ROSITA VIRAY, JEROME’s friend and companion for many years. ROSITA, her children and grandchildren cared very much for JEROME and he for them. The VIRAY’s were a second family for him, and he returned their friendship and love. We are grateful to them for the love and caring they showed our father. Music played an important role in Jerome’s life. Over the years, he played slide trombone, violin, accordion and piano. It was on the piano he most intensely expressed himself. Though not a trained musician, he played wonderfully, pouring his emotions into his music. His music had the fire, the life and the sparkle that better-trained musicians could only wish their music had. From the woods of Collingdale, to the palm trees of Southern California—in distance not far at all, especially by today’s standards, but how long and eventful the journey. The memory of his love and his many good deeds will live on, until all who knew him are themselves gone. From dust to dust and la’dor va’dore. HARDY KUPFERBERG (nee WIERSCH), died August 6, 2012 one month short of her 90th birthday. Born in Berlin, Germany and a long time resident of Philadelphia. HARDY was preceded in death by her loving husband, J. KURT. HARDY‘S journey had been a long and tortuous one, one that in 1933 was detoured down the darkest road in the history of the Jewish people. It was fourteen years later, that HARDY’S life started on course again when she met her wonderful husband KURT, followed by the birth of their daughter ELLEN. As the sole survivor of her family – 89 members whose lives were extinguished in the Holocaust – HARDY was a sober reminder to the rest of us of how precarious life was for a Jew in the non Jewish world and how the creation of Israel had made a difference for her. She was zealous in her efforts in support of her spiritual homeland. On meeting HARDY, one was struck by her crusading spirit. Rising above the physical frailties that stemmed from her concentration camp experience, HARDY was an ardent supporter of Jewish life. Her overriding concerns drew her to NA’Amat, USA, whose projects and programs enhance the quality of life in Israel and assured Israel’s future. HARDY was a long time President of the Adamah Chapter of NA’Amat, USA. She and KURT volunteered at several nursing homes and often volunteered at Federation’s Super Sunday. She supported associations connected to animal welfare and was dedicated to organizations such as ARMDI and ZOA. HARDY and KURT were also active members of the Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and spoke effectively at schools and colleges to teachers and students about their Holocaust experience. Much of HARDY’S strength was derived from the support of her adoring husband, KURT, and from ELLEN BORNSTEIN, her only daughter, as well as MILT, ELLEN’S husband. HARDY will never be forgotten by the people whose lives she touched...a very special lady. There was no one quite like her.
