Six high school students from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex decided to take a step toward their future and away from the relaxation of summer to attend Next Generation Design Institute, a 10-day internship program held at Huckabee, a Fort Worth architecture firm. The NGDI program, now in its seventh year, is designed to give high school students with an interest in architecture or engineering an opportunity to see how a professional firm functions including client meetings, developing designs, working in teams and presentation delivery. This year’s program partnered with Habitat for Humanity and challenged the students to create a single- As part of the winning team, family home using sustainableTaylor Lynn was awarded a design strategies. $2,000 scholarship. The students selected for the 2009 NGDI program were Taylor Lynn from White Settlement ISD, Josh Giles from All Saints’ Episcopal School in Fort Worth, Aaron Whiting and Angela Garcia from Crowley ISD and Jackson Eudy and Austin Jones from Mansfield ISD. Students were placed into teams of two and provided workstations at Huckabee for the 10-day program. The challenge was to create a 1,600 square foot sustainable single-family home that included at least five “green” strategies. Working along side Huckabee staff in the production department, the students learned how to create an effective faux design for Habitat for Humanity. They visited a construction site, met with a landscape architect, learned the business of architecture and met with Huckabee executives. The students also traveled to Texas Tech University for a twoday visit to the College of Architecture where the students were able to discover life as an architect student, develop final presentation vignettes and build models of their sustainable family home. Final design presentations were made in front of a panel of judges, friends, family and the Huckabee staff Wednesday, June 25. Participation and achievement scholarships were awarded to each student totaling $10,800. Taylor Lynn will be a senior at Brewer High School in the Fall. As part of the winning team, he was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Photos by Ben Posey Taking a look at movies just UNDER THE RADAR ENTERTAINMENT COMMENTARY By A.C. Hall Every year we hear a whole lot about a handful of films and yet it seems that some of the best movies are ones that get little promotion. There are some amazing looking movies landing in theaters in the upcoming year and we’re going to take a look at them so they don’t pass us by. The first of these films will be releasing on Aug. 7 and is called Cold Souls. This unique comedy/drama stars Paul Giamatti who, in a bizarre and unique twist, plays himself in the film. Giamatti is feeling overburdened and sluggish and learns of a company that removes and stores your soul for you. Soon Giamatti starts to hate the numbness he feels without his soul and wants it reinstalled but learns that it’s been stolen from the storage facility. He then embarks on a quest to track it down and get it back. This movie won’t be showing up everywhere as it’s one of those extremely bizarre stories that won’t appeal to everyone, but I really am excited to check it out. It’s a really unique premise and Giamatti is such an amazing actor and I really think this will be a truly interesting movie. Also releasing on Aug. 7 is Paper Heart. This is a fake documentary starring a really unique and charming young actress Charlene Yi. She’s a cute and awkward young actress and in the film goes on a quest to understand love, saying she’s immune to feeling it. Eventually the documentary comes across another young awkward actor Michael Cera and the two of them begin a strange new relationship. This looks to be one of the most adorable films to release in some time. Yi and Cera couldn’t be a more perfect match as the two of them just may be the most awkward humans ever and yet together they couldn’t be more wonderful. Judge Jean Boyd of the 323 District Court was the guest speaker bringing information to the audience about the juvenile court system. Judge Boyd stated that she and five other judges handle the juvenile court cases for the district. The Juvenile Courts in Texas hear the cases of children between 10 and 16 years old. When they turn 17 they are tried in an adult court. Judge Boyd provided a chart showing that in 2008 six thousand one hundred and forty-five cases (6,165) were referred to Tarrant County Juvenile Services. One thousand six hundred sixty-seven (1,667) of those cases were for felony crimes and six hundred and five (605) were for violent crimes. These were all crimes committed by children under the age of 17, with some of the children being under ten years old. Judge Boyd told the crowd that about 6% of the juvenile offenders are not rehabilitated. The good news, she stated, is that 94% learn their lesson through the many avenues of rehabilitation, education and encouragement provided to them and their parents by Tarrant County. The state legislature has somewhat tied the hands of the local judges by passing laws that prohibit the juveniles from being incarcerated for misdemeanors. She said that basically a child can commit misdemeanor crimes over and over and all the judge can do is say, “If you do that again, I’ll have to warn you again.” The fact that there is no real consequence deters very few of the repeat juvenile offenders. Some lawmakers feel that after several offenses have been committed, a more severe action should be taken. say with a high level of certainty that you will fall in love with this trailer as soon as you watch it. On Aug. 14 you’ve got a movie that I am unbelievably excited about releasing. It’s called District 9 and is a science fiction movie about a giant alien ship that is stuck hovering on Earth. The aliens are forced to stay in a certain district and the movie is about why they are here and how they are being treated by the humans. This one has one of my favorite trailers I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a really mysterious preview and one that is full of creativity and style, and I absolutely can’t wait to see this one in theaters. This is one that I think will be a big cult hit. Also releasing on that day is the thriller A Perfect Getaway. Starring Steve Zahn and Mila Jovovich, this film is about a couple who heads to a remote island getaway for a hiking adventure vacation. They soon team up with a few other couples hiking through the area but then discover that there is a man and woman team murdering other hikers in the area. Zahn and Jovovich find themselves on the run as they try to figure out which of the couples are targets and which are We Provide Maintenance, Service & Repairs. Doesn’t it make you wonder about the cause and what can be done about it? With all the programs offered to these children and their parents you would think that their lives could be changed, and remember 94% are, but what about the 6% who will end up committing a very serious crime and then will spend their life in prison? What about the victims of these serious crimes who might possibly have lost someone they love? This is a caring community and many are involved in many ways, but there are some who when their child is involved in criminal activity do not take it seriously. Some parents even believe that when a child commits a misdemeanor they are just “being kids.” Is there too much apathy? If you haven’t been a victim, are you not worried about it? Hope we see more of you at the next Crime Watch meeting and that more of you will get involved in helping to keep your neighborhood safe. I’m thinking Arby’s® 7/6/09 1:13:40 AM Page 2 Wednesday, July 8, 2009 West Side News Movies under the radar continued from front cover the killers. This one just looks like a rock solid thriller. Zahn has really come into his own as an actor in recent years, and one of my favorite actors Timothy Olyphant co-stars in this one. I’m excited for this one to release and think it could be a real surprise hit of the summer. The next release flying under the radar will be hitting on Sept. 9 and is called 9. This one will be easy to remember as it comes out on 9-909. It’s a computer animated film set after humanity’s destruction and follows the exploits of nine strange little creatures that were created by a scientist right before humanity was wiped out. These nine creatures must fight back against the robots who have taken over the planet. Even though its computer generated, this is a PG-13 film that is being done by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) and looks incredible. The visual style is really unbelievably good and the movie looks smart and haunting. This is one that should be a real treat. Sept. 11 brings us another great unheralded film and this one is called Whiteout. Based off the comic book of the same name this movie stars Kate Beckinsale who travels to Antarctica to try and get to the bottom of the first ever murder committed there. The story will focus heavily on the location and the horribly fierce conditions that exist there. While there’s not a ton of story to go on from this trailer, it looks like it’s got a lot going for it. The location is very reminiscent of 30 Days of Night, which was another comic book based movie, and this one also looks like it could be a really strong action film. On Sept. 18 the space horror film Pandorum releases and I’m fully prepared to be completely freaked out by it. Starring Dennis Quaid, this movie takes place in deep space. Quaid and another crew member on this big ship wake up from cryogenic sleep with no memory of who they are, why they’re on the ship, or what happened to the rest of the crew. This film looks about as creepy as possible as the humans on the ship struggle against the monstrous evil that has beset them in deep space. Something The BHS REUNION INFO about sci-fi mixed with horror freaks me out in a big way and Pandorum looks to continue that trend. Oct. 9 will bring us the great looking action comedy Zombieland. Starring Woody Harrelson, this film is set after a zombie outbreak that takes over most of the world. Harrelson is a masterful zombie killer who teams up with a haphazard group of teenagers as they all try to survive as zombies overrun the planet. This one looks like a really hilarious action movie and Harrelson is once again cast in a great role. He’s never been my favorite actor but has found himself in some perfect roles and this one fits him really well. The trailer is full of funny jokes and great action and this one should be a great October release. The final film I want to highlight is one that I’ve been anxiously awaiting. Releasing on Oct. 16 is The Road. This film stars Viggo Mortensen as a beleaguered father who is trying to lead his wife and young son to safety in a post apocalyptic America. The going is extremely tough and those who are still alive are all roughly scraping to survive and will stop at nothing to get by. This film is based off a hugely successful novel and looks to be a true one of a kind epic. Based off the trailer, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see this one. It looks unbelievably good and as a huge Mortensen fan I’m so excited to see him take on another epic role such as this one. This is certainly one to add to the calendar and has the chance to be one of the big films of the year. So there you have it. These are some of the stronger looking films releasing the last half of this year that have been getting little to no promotion. If you want to get a closer look at each of these films, then head over to www. grizzlydetail.com/movies.html to check out all of the trailers so you can see which ones you’ll want to add to your “must see” list. By A.C. Hall Away We Go: A summer movie jewel I can’t even begin this review without disclosing that I’m a major fan of the television show “The Office.” John Krasinski is my favorite actor on the show, and I’ve been a huge fan of his for a while now. However, having seen both of the movies he’s done since hitting it big, I had accepted the fact that he’s not a great actor. In both Leatherheads and License to Wed he was stiff and forgettable. However, in Away We Go, Krasinski brings to life an off the wall unique character in a charming story that is among my favorites of the year. The movie centers on Burt and Verona who are expecting their first child. With nothing tying them down to where they currently live, they set out across the country in search of a perfect place to settle down and raise their family. While the two of them are extremely unique individuals, the friends and family they visit with across the country are at times outrageous and ridiculous and make Burt and Verona’s attempt to find a home even more difficult. Every once in a while a truly unique and wonderful movie like this comes along and I’m so glad that I went out of my way to see this one. It’s a truly lovely little film and one that is so needed during the summer season of giant blockbusters filled with explosions and action. Away We Go is about as anti-summer blockbuster as it gets. The strength of this film is in the acting of all involved. Krasinski does an award-winning job bringing the character of Burt to life, and it really shows just how strong an actor he can be. Burt is offbeat, awkward, ultra nerdy and hyper intelligent and Krasinski embraces the role and seems like a completely different person in the film. His pregnant girlfriend is played by Maya Rudolph, and the Saturday Night Live actress shows she’s got the skills to do more than just late night comedy. Add in a group of truly hilarious and talented co-stars and you’ve got a film with some great and memorable performances. THE VERDICT: This is a rare, quiet, charming and beautiful movie that is one of my favorites I’ve seen in a while. It’s such an unassuming story about love and family and is smartly written and acted throughout. There are a few content related notes I need to share about the film. The opening scene of the film is rather sexually explicit and really the one thing I questioned in this great movie. It’s completely out of place with the rest of the story and is completely out of synch with the rest of this charming movie. While there’s no nudity, the short scene is a bit graphic and is just such a misstep on the filmmakers’ part to have included it at all. There’s also a heavy amount of language in the movie so if you’re sensitive to that you may need to take that into consideration before seeing it. Only a few movies like this show up each year, and even though you sometimes have to drive a little to find a theater showing it, the whole thing is a very worthwhile endeavor. I very highly recommend that you “SEE IT NOW” when it comes to Away We Go. Away We Go is rated R for language and some sexual content. The The International This film has been the subject of many jokes among my friends since it released in theaters many months ago. It’s an action/thriller in which the main villain is a bank. This movie slipped through the cracks for me and it took me a bit to warm up to it once it released on DVD but eventually I got around to checking it out. While I had zero expectations for the movie, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a fun thriller that was silly enough to be laughable but serious enough to keep you interested. Clive Owen stars in the film as an international agent trying to find a way to prove that a large bank has been funding all sorts of terrorism and war crimes across the planet. Each time he finds a source inside the bank, they end up missing and as pressure mounts on him to end the investigation, he turns to more and more desperate measures to get to the truth. As silly as the story sounds it’s actually pretty interesting and the film does a good job of dropping you right into the conspiracy of the bank and its evil ways. Owen is a real pro in the role that some actors would only do a halfhearted job with a movie like this but he steps up and gives it his all. It’s no award winning performance but it is a good one that lends credibility to a movie that desperately needs it. THE VERDICT: Every once in a while a perfect rental film comes along and that’s exactly what The International is. Just the right amount of drama and action mixed with some great scenery and visuals make this an ideal fit for an evening in with your loved ones. The International is rated R for some sequences of violence and language. Public Enemies: Another summer letdown Pretty soon this summer is going to become known as one full of the most disappointing films, and Public Enemies was another giant step down that road. This is a film with a vivid and compelling true story to base it on being presented by an incredibly talented director with two of the best actors in Hollywood to carry out the main roles. So you can imagine my surprise when the movie was a long, boring string of uninspiring performances and immediately forgettable action sequences. Set in the 1930’s this movie tells the story of infamous bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) and the men who worked hard to apprehend him. The film opens up in the midst of his bank robbing reign of terror as the FBI struggles to track him down. As the hunt for Dillinger and his crew intensifies, the stakes get higher and higher for both the criminals and the lawmen. It’s hard for me to really express how disappointed I was with this movie. The people involved in making it are some of the finest folks working in this industry and yet nothing about this film gelled. Depp and Bale both give emotionless, uninspired performances and it’s sad to see some of the best in the business put forth such a halfhearted effort. The movie itself looks terrifically charming and exciting from the trailers, but once you’re sitting through two and a half hours of it that couldn’t be further from the truth. The film is completely without charm and therefore as it drags on endlessly you care very little about either the supposed to be charming Depp and the supposed to be intense Bale. Long, long periods of overly dramatic scenes that drag on endlessly lead into uninteresting action sequences. Rinse and repeat for two hours and twenty minutes. THE VERDICT: For me Public Enemies gets harsher judgment than your average bad movie because it should’ve been great. When a film has regular actors and a regular director it may get more of a pass, but when you have all the great components that this one had and still fail, I think it’s fair to be a bit more disappointed. Ultimately that’s the word I keep coming back to. Public Enemies was a disappointment. What easily could’ve been one of the best movies of the summer is instead a completely pedestrian crime drama with no standout performances and a forgettable story. If you’re really set on seeing this movie then I would say wait and “RENT IT” but for most of you out there I’d suggest that you “DON’T BOTHER” with this forgettable, disappointing crime drama. Public Enemies is Rated R for gangster violence and some language. FREE Dry Cleaning / Laundry Dusty & Teresa Allen - Owners/Operators 8424 White Settlement Rd. By Norris Chambers Commentary by Dr. Don Newbury figuring the par putt a scant yardstick from the pin was a tapin. But, he missed! He handled the misfortune like a pro. Ryan, a golfing hacker at best, didn’t. He swung his left arm violently, his hand crashing into a steel key box…. Dr. Newbury is a speaker and writer in the Metroplex. His website: www.speakerdoc.com F ans of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team sport Tshirts with “MFFL” lettering. Attempts to pronounce it wad the tongue; remember, “MFFL” is a long putt from an acronym. (Owner Mark Cuban came up with the designation: Mavericks Fans For Life.) In Burleson, Texas, a rabid sports fan says his shirt letters mean: “Mickelson Fan For Life.” The fan is Greg Ryan, a Chick-fil-A franchisee. Actually, he and his golfing hero have much in common. They’re both 39 this year, both left-handed and both have wicked swings. Ryan’s talkedabout swing--the buzz of Burleson--was NOT on the links. Friends there say his swings are like barroom doors; if his golf game were a prize fight, they’d stop it…. Other comparisons drop off considerably. In 2007, for example, Mickelson earned about 50 million dollars in tournaments and endorsements, not far behind Tiger Woods, who set the pace for income among the world’s athletes. Ryan that year sold tons of chicken, but earned zilch for endorsements. For years on the PGA Tour, Mickelson was labeled “the best golfer never to win a major tournament.” On one of several “near misses,” he called himself “an idiot.” This is one of the kinder things said of Ryan after his vicious swing referenced above. OK, so back-tracking is a “must.” Rain delayed the US Open final round until Monday. Mickelson, runner-up in four earlier opens, was in the chase. With four holes to play, though, his chances faded quickly. He had a chance to tie or win until he bogeyed 17 and the winner birdied 16. Ryan, at work prepping for the noon rush of chicken-eaters, claims that he “kept his shoulder to the wheel during the onslaught of patrons. Still, he cast frequent glances to the TV screen on his I-phone. His hero was “in the hunt!” Customers placing orders from Ryan while Mickelson was on TV did so at their peril…. I feel particularly sorry for the diner at his station when Mickelson’s t-shot faded into the rough on 14. Then he smashed a 201-yard approach shot to the back of the green. A 20-foot putt meant a birdie; three putts bore the blight of a bogey. Alas, Mickelson missed his birdie attempt. He took a deep breath, The The blow smarted. Trouper that he is, Ryan stayed the course through the mealtime rush. Near shift’s end, his hand continued to throb, so he went to an emergency clinic. Sure enough, X-rays revealed a fracture. Slowly, he drove home, awkwardly steering with his right hand. He had time to concoct a story, but to his credit, he decided to tell wife Lori, and daughters Kylie, 12, and Riley, 4, the unvarnished truth. He explained that he faced surgery four days later, and that two pins would be inserted for a time. Later, there’d be a hard cast. With any luck, as the surgeon put it, he’ll be “good as new” for the fall football kick-off. Lori “heard him out,” then spoke. “You handle the surgery thing, and I’ll schedule the therapy,” she dictated, “and I’m NOT talking about the physical kind.”… Greg is actually enjoying his misery. Pain pills are but memories. He is luxuriating in the pampering provided by the women in his life. They fluff his pillows, bring him sustenance and give him sales reports from the store. The youngsters have made two signs, one for the store, and one to slap on their dad’s forehead. They read: “Chill Out on Using Phones at Work.” Dedicated to fostering absolute quiet for Greg’s convalescence, they are quick to “shush” the dogs if they bark during his naptime. “Those mutts are driving me crazy,” he moaned. “That’s not a drive, it’s a putt,” Lori purred…. He has notified Chick-fil-A honchos in Georgia that for the next few days, he can be reached on the home phone. Greg is determined to return to work ASAP, with genuine efforts to--as old farmers used to say--“make a hand,” albeit a tough assignment to serve up chicken with a right hand rarely used for such. Nowadays, with lots of time to think, he’s vowed never again to take a game so seriously, unless, of course, he is a participant. Maybe he can go to school on the Mickelson family’s new perspectives gleaned from the recent diagnosis of his wife’s cancer. Maybe you noticed pink accents on his attire at the Open. He was acknowledging the fight against cancer. Amy Mickelson’s surgery was performed on July 1. Her husband, (on leave from the PGA Tour indefinitely), as well as other family members and close friends, stood vigil at the hospital . On the same day, Lori made Greg a pink sling, with enough material left over for matching boxers…. If it rains, look for the rainbow! weather!” he was correct pharmacists do. A quart can was easy to locate since many vegetables were canned in this size and just about everyone in the country had a can sealer and a pressure cooker. The idea was to seal the can and connect an indicator to measure the rise and fall of the lid as the atmospheric pressure changed. We sealed a can and punched a small hole in the center of the lid. The next step was to place it in an oven and get it hot enough to drive most of the air out of the can. While it was still hot and in the oven we soldered a short length of copper wire to the small hole in the center of the lid sealing the can and providing a shaft to move an indicator up and down. The wire was connected to the short end of a long lever mounted on the side of the can. A small movement of the lid caused the end of the lever to move up and down. The machine worked well, indicating the atmospheric pressure, but like the other machine did very little to predict the weather. After the apparent failure of these two attempts to become weather prognosticators we decided to just take the weather as it comes and concentrate on something else. But we did have fun trying. So, thus far in these birthday published his own books as well columns I’ve talked about what which can be bought at http://stores. lulu.com/freejenkins I’m into. This year it’s a little harder to pin down exactly what it is that I’m into though, as I feel like I’ve been more busy than usual. Work has been wonderful and while summer is usually something of a lull for me, with no Brewer sports coverage going on, this year has been different. There’s still been more than enough going on and the paper is stronger than ever. You’d think I would’ve learned not to get too attached to television shows and yet the cancellation of this one really didn’t sit too well with me. Another new show that I’ve been enjoying is Kings. This NBC drama was another totally unique and smart drama about the struggle a king had as he tried to keep the peace in his country. The show had some unbelievable acting and was probably the most unique show to land on network television in years and so of course it too has already been cancelled. There’s been a bit of music that I’ve really been into recently. The new album by rock band “The Silversun Pickups” is really great and one that I’ve been recommending to anyone and everyone. My all time favorite band “Dream Theater” also has a new release and it’s just as amazing as all their other music has been, so that’s been nice. Movie wise I’ve found myself to be a bit let down by the summer so far. There have been a lot of movies that are just nowhere near as good as they should be. In the midst of hundreds of Lincoln biographies, this book emerges as a fresh look on how Lincoln was able to effectively guide America during the turbulent and traumatic Civil War era. The book, which promises to be good summer reading, is available through the Fort Worth Public Library. Goodwin engagingly presents the reader with a thoughtful examination of Lincoln’s leadership style. Lincoln masterfully led the country with his unwavering commitment to purpose, his incredible sense of timing, and his careful attention to the diverse flow of the American public’s opinion. This event is part of the Lincoln 200 Festival celebrating Lincoln’s 200th birthday. “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” is a national traveling exhibition organized by the Gilder Lehrman Institute that examines his life, accomplishments and legacy. The free exhibit will be on display at the Fort Worth Central Library on Sept. 12, through Oct. 4, 2009. With a career spanning 3 decades, Sanders has emerged as one of America’s leading African American journalists. He currently is vice president and associate editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he also writes a regular column.
