A-HA Program
The After-Hospital Asthma (A-HA!) Clinic at St. Christopher’s aims to increase post-hospital follow-up visits and
decrease re-admissions and repeat visits to the emergency department for asthma.
Clinic appointments are scheduled within seven to 10 days of discharge for all patients over 2 years of age
admitted to St. Christopher’s for the treatment of asthma. At each visit, a nurse practitioner reviews the patient’s
hospitalization records, medications, and management techniques, as well as assesses his or her current condition.
A social worker also evaluates each patient and guides families to resources to alleviate any issues affecting their
children’s asthma. Additionally, all patients and families receive asthma education regarding triggers, warnings
signs, medication compliance, medication delivery and the patient’s individual asthma action plan.
Each patient’s primary care physician receives a letter summarizing the patient’s A-HA! Clinic visit.

Burn Center
As the only dedicated pediatric burn facility in the area, St. Christopher’s Burn Center prides itself on having a
multidisciplinary team of pediatric specialists trained to work specifically with young burn patients. The Burn
Center’s unique specialization allows for specific treatments tailored for children. In addition to offering acute
care, outpatient rehabilitation and advanced reconstructive surgery, the team uses advanced technology in wound
management, making dressing changes less frequent and less painful for patients.

Center for Children & Youth with Special Health Care Needs
The Center works together with families of children from birth to the age of 21 with complex illnesses, providing
ongoing, comprehensive family-centered medical care to improve access to services, community resources and
advocacy to assure that children obtain optimal support through life stages as well as promote their independence.
The team helps parents care for children who are dependent on technology such as tracheotomies or feeding tubes
as well as those with complex illnesses such as Down syndrome or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The Center has
a “Next Steps” follow-up program for infants who have been in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As patients get
older, families are assisted in transitioning their children to adult-oriented programs.

Cleft Lip and Palate Program

The renowned Cleft Lip and Palate Program is multidisciplinary and encompasses the combined experience of
plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, oral surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, otolaryngologists and social
workers. Geneticists and speech and hearing specialists also participate in the care of all cleft and craniofacial
patients. The team uses advanced techniques that begin the process of correcting cleft deformities within the first
year of a child’s life.

Concussion/Traumatic Brain Injury Program
The Concussion Program evaluates and treats children of all ages who have sustained concussions and other mild
head injuries. The Program provides high-quality, multidisciplinary care and counseling and education for parents,
referring physicians, coaches and athletic directors on the current management of traumatic brain injury and
concussions. Treatment is tailored for each child. Children receive a comprehensive evaluation to assess cognitive
dysfunction potentially affected by a concussion (e.g., attention, memory, speech, etc.). Specialists involved in their
care may include some or all of the following: neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists and
physical therapists.

Cystic Fibrosis Center
St. Christopher’s nationally accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center is a Therapeutic Development Center working with the
National CF Foundation to conduct clinical research to remain on the forefront of advanced medical treatment and
therapies. The Center’s expert team includes pulmonologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, a research
coordinator and social worker – all of whom are specifically trained in CF care. The Center’s Pulmonary Function
Laboratory is accredited by the National CF Foundation and functions under the guidelines of the American Thoracic
Society. Children of all ages can benefit from the sophisticated diagnostic equipment featured in the pulmonary and
sweat test labs.

The Dorothy Mann Center for Pediatric and Adolescent HIV
The Dorothy Mann Center for Pediatric and Adolescent HIV at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children provides HIV/
AIDS care, prevention, and outreach to vulnerable youth in the Philadelphia area. Staff also visits doctors’ offices,
providing continuing medical education for the professionals about HIV testing and shares their tools and expertise
in implementing testing programs in their offices.

Epilepsy Program
The comprehensive Epilepsy Program offers testing of and treatment for children of all ages who have experienced
seizures. Specialists involved in their care may include some or all of the following: neurologists including
epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, radiologists and physical or occupational therapists. A wide
range of treatments exist to control seizures including antiepileptic medications, strictly monitored ketogenic (high
fat, low carbohydrate) diet and epilepsy surgery.
For patients being evaluated for epilepsy surgery, inpatient video EEG monitoring, WADA testing, and more invasive
monitoring including the use of grids and strips is used to assess the course of action.
The range of surgical options offered for seizure disorders includes:
Focal Resections
Excision of small areas responsible for seizures
hemispherotomy
Disconnection of a cerebral hemisphere
Corpus Callosotomy
Disruption of the connection between the brain’s two hemispheres
Vagus Nerve Stimulation
The insertion of a pulse generator that sends electrical impulses to disrupt the formation of seizures.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) Program
Critically ill infants and children of all ages who require ECMO, which is one of the most advanced forms of life support
available to patients experiencing acute failure of the cardio-respiratory system, are treated by St. Christopher’s
internationally recognized ECMO team. St. Christopher’s ECMO program, which has been in place since 2001, is
an intense, multidisciplinary program comprised of specialty nurses, perfusionists, respiratory care practitioners,
intensive care physicians, surgeons and neonatologists.
A testament to the strength of the program is that more than 92 percent of infants receiving ECMO services for
respiratory support at the hospital survive. This is well above the 76 percent national survival rate. St. Christopher’s
ECMO team has developed training programs and strategies for reaching performance excellence measures to
assure the highest quality of ECMO services. The ECMO team received the “Excellence in Life Support Award” by
an international consortium of ECMO centers and was named “Best Nursing Team 2010” in the tri-state area by
ADVANCE magazine.

Grow Clinic (for children with failure to thrive)
The Grow Clinic’s multidisciplinary team of a pediatrician, nutritionist, social worker/coordinator, and psychologist
evaluates patients to address the multiple medical and psychosocial issues that cause failure to thrive. The team
develops a comprehensive treatment plan to improve nutrition and promote growth for the child and family as well
as provide appropriate resources.

Intestinal Failure Program
The Intestinal Failure Program focuses on children with short bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease
(Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). The program involves the evaluation and management of the medical,
nutritional and surgical problems in these children. It is a multispeciality program involving Gastroenterology,
Surgery and Nutrition.

Kidney Transplant Program
The Kidney Transplant Program is at the cutting edge of kidney transplantation and is one of the few programs in the
country to offer steroid-free care, if requested. Staff provides comprehensive care to infants and children undergoing
kidney transplantation. St. Christopher’s has performed more than 430 kidney transplants since 1971. The Transplant
Program is coordinated with the hospital’s dialysis team to ensure every child is afforded the opportunity to receive
a kidney transplant in a rapid, efficient and safe manner, allowing for a return to a more normal life.
The Transplant Program is part of the Kidney Center, which provides evaluation and care of children of all ages with
acute and chronic kidney disease, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, hypertension, and all types of body fluid
and chemistry disturbances.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Program
The Minimally Invasive Surgery Program is at the forefront in the use of minimally invasive techniques including
single port surgery in the chest and abdomen. Minimally invasive surgery is advantageous in the surgery of children
of all ages, with shortened hospitalizations, less postoperative pain and minimal incisions.

Mitochondrial Disorders Lab
The Mitochondrial Disorders Lab at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is one of only five centers in the country
equipped to analyze mitochondrial metabolism in mitochondria isolated from fresh muscle biopsy, as well as
in frozen muscle and fibroblasts. Additionally, the lab can provide a detailed genetic analysis of mitochondrial
disorders. Neurologists at St. Christopher’s are conducting ongoing research into mitochondrial disorders to better
understand and treat them.

Regional Fetal Evaluation Center
The comprehensive Regional Fetal Evaluation Center provides expertise in prenatal diagnosis and treatment,
reproductive genetics, and multidisciplinary consultations for expectant mothers with leading pediatric subspecialists
at St. Christopher’s. The Center’s nurse coordinator helps ensure personalized service by coordinating all appointments
and serving as a point of contact who follows the family from the initial visit through delivery and subsequent specialty
treatment. St. Christopher’s offers fetal echocardiography and fetal MRI testing for evaluation of expectant mothers.

Sickle Cell Care and Research Center
The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Care and Research Center is one of three regional referral centers licensed by the
Pennsylvania Department of Health to treat newborns diagnosed with hemoglobinopathies. Researchers at the
Center are testing new medications and treatments for sickle cell pain and blood vessel problems, and participate
in other national research programs to develop a better understanding of this complex disease.
The Center coordinates acute care, routine follow-up care, and treatment with the anti-sickling medication
hydroxyurea, referrals for curative bone marrow transplantation, as well as genetic counseling, patient and family
education and counseling, and school and vocational assistance for children of all ages with sickle cell disease.

Sleep Center
The nationally accredited Sleep Center treats patients of all ages, from toddlers who have enlarged tonsils or may
breathe through their mouths – causing sleep apnea, to adolescents and teens who suffer from the inability to
fall asleep or stay awake due to altered sleep cycles, as well as children with sleep issues resulting from medical
conditions such as obesity, Down syndrome, lung disease, seizure disorders and congenital malformations of the
face. Staff members include pulmonologists and neurologists who are all board-certified in sleep medicine, as well
as specially trained polysomnogram technologists and respiratory therapists.
The Center uses advanced equipment to monitor brain waves, heartbeat, eye and leg movements, respiratory patterns
and oxygen levels. Procedures performed include nocturnal polysomnogram testing, supplemental oxygen or oxygen
weaning, non-invasive ventilatory support including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bilevel positive
airway pressure (BiPAP), mechanical assisted ventilation weanings, gastroesophageal reflux testing, multiple sleep
latency testing (MSLT) and maintenance of wakefulness testing (MWT).

Trauma Program
St. Christopher’s Trauma Program team, comprised of dedicated pediatric specialists, is committed to providing
compassionate and individualized care for minor injuries through severe multi-system trauma cases. The hospital
has one of three state-accredited Regional Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers that is capable of providing highly
specialized treatment of the most critical injuries.
The team includes board-certified emergency physicians, trauma surgeons and anesthesiologists as well as
neurosurgeons, orthopedic and plastic surgeons.
Patients have access to advanced radiology services, an in-house surgical team with a dedicated operating room
suite, advanced laboratory capabilities allowing for availability of blood and blood products, and short turnaround
time for lab testing.
Patients are subsequently treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with board-certified critical care
specialists.

in adolescent patients. Physicians specially trained in adolescent medicine provide consultation services for
adolescent related issues including menstrual disorders, family planning issues and HIV testing for patients 12 to

The Audiology Department provides comprehensive diagnostic, habilitative and rehabilitative services for children
from birth through 21 years of age. Audiologists work closely with pediatricians, ear, nose, and throat physicians and
other medical professionals, speech and language pathologists, educational personnel and hearing aid dispensers
to help ensure optimal academic and social success.

The Heart Center for Children at St. Christopher’s provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of children of
all ages and young adults with congenital or acquired heart disease and a variety of other cardiac conditions. Older
patients with congenital heart disease are also followed and managed collaboratively with adult cardiologists.
The Heart Center offers diagnostic services for patients with cardiac dysrhythmias, congenital cardiovascular
malformations, acquired heart disease, hyperlipidemia and systemic hypertension. Based on clinical need and
following examination, patients are referred for non-invasive diagnostic services such as an electrocardiogram
(ECG), echocardiogram, exercise stress test, Holter monitor or a tilt test.
In some cases more invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization or cardiac surgery are recommended.

In St. Christopher’s electrophysiology lab fellowship trained cardiac electrophysiologists provide diagnostic and
interventional therapy for children of all ages with abnormal congenital or acquired heart rhythms.

Pediatric and Fetal Echocardiography
St. Christopher’s experienced pediatric echocardiography technologists and board-certified cardiologists
perform and interpret echocardiograms for fetuses and children of all ages who are at risk for congenital and/
or acquired heart disease. Fetal echocardiography is performed on high-risk pregnant women beginning at 20
weeks gestation.
Invasive and Interventional Pediatric Cardiology
Fellowship trained interventional cardiologists diagnose and treat a wide variety of heart problems in children
of all ages in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, which is equipped with digital imaging equipment and
computers for fluoroscopy and cineangiogram that allow for precise quantitative evaluation of heart defects.
Often, definitive repair of heart problems that once required open-heart surgery can now be provided in a cardiac
catheterization lab.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

Pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons work closely with cardiologists to provide comprehensive care for children of all
ages with congenital and acquired heart disease. Surgical correction of pediatric cardiovascular abnormalities and
complex cardiovascular malformations of newborns and young infants is provided by an expert surgical team.
A multidisciplinary approach involving cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, nurse practitioners, critical care
physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses and social workers helps to meet the needs of patients and their families.
Patients are treated for a broad spectrum of cardiac diseases including complex heart malformations such as
hypoplastic left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries, or interrupted aortic arch in neonates, single
ventricle anomalies, complex forms of tetralogy of Fallot and atrioventricular canal defects, valvular heart disease
and heart rhythm disorders, among others.
Critical Care
Children of all ages requiring critical care are cared for by a team of board-certified pediatric critical care experts in
the 33-bed clinical areas in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CCU), transitional
care unit, (Special Care Unit) and Pediatric Burn unit.
A multidisciplinary Palliative Care Team provides services for patients with serious or life-threatening illnesses and
their families. The goal of palliative care is to reduce illness burden, relieve suffering, and maintain quality of life
from the time of diagnosis onward.

St. Christopher’s Department of Dental Medicine is staffed by dentists, periodontists and oral maxillofacial surgeons
who have concentrated training and knowledge in treating children. They use advanced equipment, diagnosis and
treatment methods while never losing sight of the need to educate and comfort patients and their families along
the way.
The hospital’s comprehensive dental services include preventive and restorative dental care, patient education, oral
maxillofacial surgery and periodontics for children of all ages. Through conscious sedation and special operating
room facilities, St. Christopher’s is exceptionally equipped to treat patients with special needs, behavioral issues
and medical problems that affect dental care.

Patients with complex medical backgrounds, including but not limited to cardiac, renal, cancer, bleeding disorders,
sickle cell disease, mental or physical challenges may require their dental needs rendered in close consultation
with their respective medical specialists in a hospital setting. Children with craniofacial anomalies may also be
treated by a dentist.

The Section of Developmental Pediatrics evaluates and treats children of all ages experiencing cognitive and/or
motor difficulties. Patients treated include children with suspected or diagnosed developmental problems such

(PDD), learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The Diabetes Center at St. Christopher’s provides comprehensive care for children of all ages with diabetes. A team
of endocrinologists, nurses, certified diabetes educators, social workers and nutritionists employ a multidisciplinary
approach to provide medical care, education and support to diabetes patients and their caregivers.
Ear, Nose, & Throat

St. Christopher’s staff of otolaryngologists (ENTs) provides advanced diagnosis and treatment of disorders of human
communication, hearing impairment and problems of the pediatric airway and voice. Comprehensive diagnostic,
therapeutic and reconstructive surgical services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Team members use endoscopic laser surgery to remove various lesions, both neoplastic and inflammatory, from the
larynx and major conductive airway. All team members are specially trained in either laryngotracheal reconstructive
surgery, endoscopic sinus surgery and/or ear microsurgery.

As a Level I Trauma Center, St. Christopher’s provide comprehensive care during medical or trauma-related
emergencies to more than 70,000 children of all ages each year. With a 17,300-square-foot center containing 36
examination rooms and a trauma bay, the Emergency Center treats patients 24-hours-a-day, seven days-a-week.
Board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians are in attendance at all times, and pediatric and surgical
subspecialty care is available as needed on a consultative basis.
Physicians who refer a patient for emergency evaluation are encouraged to speak with an attending physician by
calling the Physician Referral Line.
A dedicated Pediatric Transport Team coordinates more than 4,000 transports annually by ambulance or helicopter
within the tri-state region.
Endocrinology

The Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders provides comprehensive clinical diagnostic and
therapeutic services for children of all ages with thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary diseases, disorders of growth and
pubertal development, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, and metabolic syndrome, as well as disorders of mineral
metabolism. Comprehensive multidisciplinary care is provided for diabetes patients and their families.
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Counseling

St. Christopher’s gastroenterology program is both comprehensive and patient-focused. It includes outpatient and
inpatient evaluation, and diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal, liver and nutritional disorders
in children of all ages.
Typical patient digestive issues and disorders include abdominal pain, constipation, gastroesophageal reflux,
diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease and intestinal bleeding.
Because gastrointestinal conditions can be quite serious and require complex care, the multidisciplinary team
includes gastroenterologists, surgeons, nutritionists and social workers who are all dedicated to providing
exceptional patient care.

St. Christopher’s pediatric hematology staff members diagnose, treat and manage children of all ages with a wide
variety of both common and rare blood disorders and diseases.
Some of the conditions treated include: sickle cell anemia, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, red blood cell
disorders, platelet disorders such as thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis and von Willebrand Disease, and disorders
of white blood cells such as leucopenia or leukocytosis.
St. Christopher’s is a regional leader in specialty care for newborns and children of all ages with hemophilia and
hemoglobinopathies and the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center is one of three regional referral centers licensed by
the Pennsylvania Department of Health to treat newborns diagnosed with hemoglobinopathies, which include both
sickle cell anemia and thalassemias.

Board-certified specialists, led by nationally renowned pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Sarah Long, are
available for consultations on patients who have enigmatic or unclear diagnoses, children with severe or complicated
infections or infections stemming from compromised immune systems.
The Lung Center

The comprehensive Lung Center at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children provides state-of-the-art pulmonary and
allergy care across the full spectrum of respiratory and allergic diseases. Specialty centers are available for children
with cystic fibrosis and sleep disorders.
Care is also provided for children of all ages with conditions including complicated asthma, lung malformations,
chronic recurrent cough, noisy breathing and other lung conditions.
The multidisciplinary team includes pulmonologists, allergists, specialty nurses and nurse practitioners, a respiratory
therapist, social worker and a dietitian.
The Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory performs a wide array of diagnostic testing for children of all ages.

The Section of Neonatal Medicine provides a comprehensive program of highly specialized care for critically ill
newborns. The Hospital’s 30-bed Level IIIC NICU is staffed by a team of neonatologists as well as neonatal nurse
practitioners and physician’s assistants that provide individualized care for the complex needs of each neonate.
The Section is headed by Dr. Maria Delivoria-Papadopoulos, a worldwide leader in the field of neonatal-perinatal
medicine, whose research and medical practice has helped improve the lives of tens of thousands of children.
Comprehensive care is provided by pediatric surgeons and subspecialists who are available 24 hours a day to
respond to problems requiring medical, surgical or subspecialty intervention.
Advanced treatment offered includes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), inhaled nitric oxide therapy,
high-frequency oscillatory and jet ventilation, as well as selective head cooling technology used to treat hypoxicischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
The Newborn Brain Center provides a multidisciplinary team of experts including neonatologists, neurologists,
neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and developmental pediatricians who diagnose and treat brain injury in the
neonatal period.
A 10-bed Continuing Care Nursery (CCN) provides a family-centered environment in preparation for discharge.

of all ages with acute and chronic kidney disease, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, hypertension, and all types
of body fluid and chemistry disturbances.
The Center’s nationally recognized dialysis and transplant program is at the cutting edge of kidney transplant care
and is one of the few programs in the country to offer steroid-free care, if requested. The Kidney Transplant Program
is coordinated with the dialysis team to ensure every child is afforded the opportunity to receive a kidney transplant
in a rapid, efficient and safe manner.

The Section of Neurology is one of the area’s leading providers of comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic programs
for acute and chronic disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The Epilepsy Program provides
the full complement of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and other seizure disorders through neurodiagnostic
testing including at-home, 24-hour EEG monitoring devices, invasive monitoring with subdural grids for intractable
epilepsy, new treatments including antiepileptic drugs and special diets as well as vagus nerve stimulator therapy.
A multidisciplinary team of epileptologists, neuropsychologists, dietician, social worker and neurosurgeon treat
patients with refractory epilepsy.
St. Christopher’s neurologists also have particular expertise in treating neurometabolic and neurogenetic diseases,
spasticity, neuromuscular disorders, mental retardation, autism, ADHD and other learning disabilities, as well as
neurological sleep disorders.
Neurosurgery

The Section of Neurosurgery provides comprehensive pediatric neurosurgery services for problems relating to the
brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Working collaboratively with other pediatric subspecialties, St. Christopher’s
neurosurgical team ensures high-level, compassionate, coordinated care for children of all ages.
A comprehensive program is in place to monitor and treat patients with concussions and other types of head trauma.
Newborns with brain and spinal cord injuries or deformities are cared for in close collaboration with the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit. Surgical treatment is also provided for craniofacial disorders, including positional plagiocephaly
and craniosynostosis, as well as epilepsy and hydrocephalus. The Section also works with other specialists to
provide care for children with spina bifida and spasticity.

onsite facilities for conscious sedation and procedures, an infusion center, radiology facilities, onsite Internet
access to radiology studies and an onsite phlebotomy service.
The Hospital’s neuro-oncology program diagnoses and treats children and young adults with primary brain tumors,
spinal cord tumors and tumors related to neurofibromatosis. St. Christopher’s also has dedicated bone marrow and
stem cell transplant programs.

The Orthopedic Center provides specialized care and treatment of problems of bones and joints in children of all

such as scoliosis and spondylolisthesis; foot deformities such as clubfeet; neuromuscular problems, primarily

The Sports Medicine team treats sports-related musculoskeletal injuries and addresses non-orthopedic problems,
in addition to offering surgical options for sports-related injuries and trauma.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine uses advanced methods to offer comprehensive diagnostic
procedures on both a routine and an emergency basis. Each of the Department’s sections including Anatomic
Pathology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Cytogenetics, Hematology, Microbiology and Virology, accepts specimen referrals
and is staffed by medical technicians and technologists who work under the direction of MDs or PhDs.
In addition to the routine tests and pathology evaluation, the section of Anatomic Pathology accepts referrals
for muscle biopsies (light microscopy, histochemistry, EM) including mitochondrial cytopathies, kidney biopsies
(light microscopy, immunofluorescence, EM), evaluation of mucosal biopsies for Hirschsprung’s disease, electron
microscopy evaluation of ciliary ultrastructure (Ciliary Dyskinesia).
The cytogenetics laboratory offers a consultation service to clinicians and oncologists and has developed expertise
in solid tumor and hematologic oncology karyotypic alterations for pediatric and adult malignancies, routine
peripheral blood karyotyping, testing of products of conception, tissue culture, fluorescence in situ hybridization
(FISH) testing, inclusive of touch preparations from frozen tissue and formalin-fixed paraffin-imbedded samples,
molecular cytogenetics, genetics of autism, disorders of sexual differentiation and contiguous gene syndromes.

The team provides educational experiences for area pediatricians and family medicine specialists on common
conditions in the young athlete, such as overuse injuries of the elbow and shoulder caused by pitching a baseball
