R o l l i n g H i l l s Ne w s m ay 2 0 0 9 Open arms Tualatin Schoolhouse Food Pantry is moving to Rolling Hills By Faith Carter, Equip Director 3550 SW Borland Road will soon be home to the Tualatin Schoolhouse Food Pantry, a welcome addition to our facility. A member of the Oregon Food Bank, the Pantry is a community organized food bank supported by 20 local churches, 29 businesses, 18 civic organizations, the city of Tualatin and the Tigard/Tualatin School District. Providing food boxes to as many as 500 families each month, the Pantry is a 100% volunteer-run operation. It’s mission is to provide emergency food to qualified households in a welcoming environment dedicated to serving members of the community. Open three days and one evening each week, guests can shop once a month for food and personal supplies to last 5-7 days. The four-year-old Pantry was originally housed in the basement of Tualatin Elementary School until city officials condemned the building. It then moved to portables behind the school. With that lease expiring, the School’s namesake will move to Rolling Hills Community Church, which has been one of many churches supporting the Pantry with food drives and volunteer staff. A year ago, five enthusiastic RHCC Community Groups made it possible to better serve customers by extending the Pantry’s operation to after-work hours. Since then, the partnership has grown with our invitation to move the Pantry into the unfinished space of our daylight basement. By opening our doors and hearts, Rolling Hills has an amazing opportunity to serve far beyond our own congregation and into the community we call home. We will join with other partners to continue the fine legacy of the Tualatin Schoolhouse Food Pantry. That legacy includes the wonderful people who serve as staff. These volunteers have hearts brimming to bless those who walk through their doors. One faithful donor shops the sales and brings cheese every month. This past winter, she walked her delivery in through a snowy wonderland! With that same spirit, a volunteer from Rolling Hills discovered the empty meat freezer and promptly filled it with fresh chicken. Something more than food distribution takes place at the Pantry. When I first visited, the portable’s dilapidated condition made me wonder what I would find inside. What I discovered was a happy, hospitable atmosphere. Without knowing if I was a customer, visitor, or volunteer, a staffer clad in a cherry red apron greeted me. She smiled, introduced herself, and asked if this was my first visit. All clients are treated that way... with warmth and respect. Volunteers serve with a humble spirit, eager to assist with shopping, boxing, and delivery of food to waiting cars, so customers leave with more than just food boxes. When you see the dust flying from our basement, you’ll know we’re preparing to throw open the doors to a new home for the Tualatin Schoolhouse Food Pantry. Those three crosses smiling down on I-205 will smile on many new visitors; what means the world to us can take on new meaning to the world around us. Please welcome our new neighbors with open hearts and arms.
