I hope everyone had a safe and joy-filled holiday season. On March 20th at 7 pm we will be hosting our 2014 Annual General Meeting. This year we are hoping to add a couple new faces to our Board of Directors. Joining our board is your chance to directly shape the growth, evolution and strength Tammy Maloney of our neighbourhood. There is something special about giving directly to the community you live in. For me it has made Tuxedo Park feel more like home. Before joining the board, I lived here in relative anonymity. I now have growing relationships with neighbours and small business owners. The more I connect with the people here, the more I feel happy, safe and secure. CASH CHEQUE 3 TUXEDO PARK COMMUNITY NEWS Letter from the Editor Welcome 2014! Thank you to all of the volunteers (including Mr. Clause and his elves) that were able to make our annual Santa Breakfast a success again this year. Our hall was full of kids and adults that enjoyed the morning of fun. Many hands make light work, thank you everyone inside and outside of our community that made it possible. As you know our AGM is fast approaching, we will be celebrating our success, please stop in to see what we have been working on over the past year and toast our amazing achievements last year and help us plan for the future. Last year’s AGM was jam packed with some great guest speakers; please watch the newsletter and website for updates on what we will have planned for this year’s meeting. I would like to touch on the development that is happening in our community. I moved into Tuxedo about 12 years ago, anticipating that our neighbourhood would see development quickly, older homes being knocked down and newer homes being constructed. I expected our redevelopment to occur years ago, but I was wrong, it happened later than I expected, but we are in full redevelopment mode now! We have homes being torn down, apartments being constructed, businesses redeveloping… we are in a full development mode Tuxedo! When redevelopments happen, the community association is asked to give the City of Calgary our opinion on the redevelopment. I understand we have “influence”, the City wants to know what our future vision for Tuxedo is, and how redevelops will impact our community. If you have ever had an opinion or interest in getting involved in the development RENFREW AUTO SERVICE Personalized service for your vehicle... Serving your community for over 19 years! It has been really exciting and educational to work with local businesses through redevelopments, and to meet with future developers and our City Councillor, seeing architectural plans, talking about parking issues, understanding how we build community with our structures and greenspaces. It has been an eye opening experience. If you are interested in getting involved and / or learning about Tuxedo’s developments please email me [email protected] or stop by one of our monthly meetings and speak with Darren Rempel, our volunteer Development Committee Chair. Thank you. – Shannon Bowen-Kelsick Facebook and Twitter We have been using Facebook and Twitter over the past year to inform residents of important information like where to vote, park improvements, community events and city happenings. Find us at: www.facebook.com/tuxedoparkcommunity and www.twitter. com/tuxedoparkyyc Send us a tweet, or post some pics on our Facebook page! Continued on page 6 President’s Message, continued from page 3 After travelling far and wide in search of meaning in life beyond money, family and friends, I’m surprised to have discovered that the joy I was looking for could be found simply by being open to building relationships with the people in my neighbourhood. Aiming to make a difference right here in Tuxedo Park is an experience that is making a true difference in my life. I therefore highly recommend it to everyone! For those that are unable to make the time commitment, may I suggest that you consider allocating some of your 2014 charitable donations to our association. This is one of the few donation opportunities that exist where you will directly receive the benefit of your donation. This is because the less time our volunteers have to spend on maintaining our hall and park, the more time they have to spend strengthening relationships with the people in our community. The stronger our relationships are with each other the more safe, happy and prosperous our community will be for ALL of us. If you are interested in learning more about joining our Board of Directors, please call me at 403.831.4503. Having no board experience is not a problem. Passion, compassion and commitment are far more important! Tammy Maloney, President Tuxedo Park Community Association 403.831.4503 If you’re struggling with debt, you’re not alone. Highland Golf Course Development http://reimagining.ca/ In May 2013, the former site of the Highland Golf Course in northwest Calgary was sold to a partnership headed by Maple Projects Inc. Maple has been involved in the Uno and Ten projects in Calgary, and has focused on rental properties and hotel developments in Western Canada and the United States. Maple’s initial plans are to build multi-family homes and some commercial elements that would revitalize the property, provide accessible greenspace and offer housing options for Highland Park. The ultimate goal is for a development that respects the history of the area while enhancing its future. With planning for the site in its early stages, Maple is inviting the community to share their ideas on how the development can best benefit Highland Park and the surrounding areas. A New Future for the former Highland Golf Course is a comprehensive engagement process designed to collect ideas and opinions from the public. There will be three phases of engagement with the community over approximately six months. The initial phase ran from November 4 to December 2, with area residents sharing their feedback online, via telephone and email, on a community sounding board, and at the temporary engagement centre established at the former golf course Clubhouse. Community feedback is now being used to shape the initial proposed development concepts that will be shared during Phase 2 of the engagement process (mid-January to mid-Febriary 2014). The final Master Plan for the Highland Golf Course Redevelopment will be available for feedback in March/April 2014, before it is submitted to The City of Calgary. At City Hall Hello Tuxedo Park, What a snowy winter it has been. Through December and January, Calgary received over a meter of snow, more than we have had in many, many years (112 years!!!). When the snow eased off, they started to go into different neighborhoods to help alleviate the issues caused by such a large volume of snow. Determining which neighbourhoods to dig out first has been a question of both empirical data as well as citizen requests. First, calls into 311 are directly fed into a system which helps the City to map the trouble areas. As a result, neighborhoods where many people called in 311 were generally given higher priority compared to those with lower call volumes. In future snow events, please report the trouble areas through the 311 system. You can contact 311 by phone, on the web at calgary.ca/311, or by downloading the ‘City of Calgary 311’ app on your smartphone. Second, snow piled along roads adjacent to schools is a priority, as many parents are choosing to drive their children. Safety is the number one goal in the snow clearing policy. The City’s objective is to make all residential roadways passable. In a normal Snow and Ice Control season, a residential roadway is considered passable if snow ruts are less than 12 cm deep. However, in light of the higher than normal accumulation of snow in December and January, the crews, to the best of their ability, used 7 cm as a goal/gauge on residential roads for ruts; this standard has been used to accommodate potential accumulations from future snowfalls. Finally, if you have any suggestions as my Council colleagues and I move into a discussion on snow clearing, please contact my office at [email protected] or 403-268-5330. January has been a great month of exciting learning opportunities and February promises more great events! January got started with our Zumba Residency. Students enjoyed six sessions participating Zumba dance and fitness as part of our Physical Education program. The residency culminated with a Family Zumba Night where parents were invited to participate in the activity. In midJanuary, our Grade 1/2 classrooms enjoyed a field trip that took them to both Fort Calgary and the National Music Centre as part of their social studies program. Grade 4, 5 and 6 students are busy preparing for our Winter Carnival in February. They are planning a variety fun outdoor activities as well as a visit from Bonhomme! This will coincide with our Nordic Ski Program where students will have three days of Nordic Ski lessons on our school field! All of these activities will be a great connection to the Winter Olympic Games which also occur in February. Go Canada!
