costumes!
Y o u n g
children often dress as
their favorite animal, cartoon character, or superhero. Other popular costumes are ghosts and
witches. On Halloween
night, children knock on
the doors of their
neighbors and say “trickor-treat,” for which they
hope to receive a small
treat or healthy snack.
This month’s Family
Friday movie nights, are
on October 9th and
22nd.
We hope you can join us
for all of the fun events

Halloween Safety Tips
From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
A few safety tips from the U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who
plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween.
Treats: Warn children not to eat
any treats before an adult has
carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.
Flame Resistant Costumes:
When purchasing a costume,
masks, beards, and wigs, look for
the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean
these items won't catch fire, it does
indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly
once removed from the ignition
source. To minimize the risk of
contact with candles or other
sources of ignition, avoid costumes
made with flimsy materials and
outfits with big, baggy sleeves or
billowing skirts.
Costume Designs: Purchase or
make costumes that are light and
bright enough to be clearly visible to
motorists.
 Apply a natural mask of cosmetics
rather than have a child wear a
loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.
 For greater visibility during dusk
and darkness, decorate or trim
costumes with reflective tape that
will glow in the beam of a car's
headlights.
 Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft
and flexible material.
 To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
 Costumes should be short enough
to prevent children from tripping
and falling.
 Children should wear well-fitting,
sturdy shoes . Mother' s high heels
are not a good idea for safe walking.
 Hats and scarves should be tied
securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.
Pedestrian Safety: Young children
should always be accompanied by
an adult or an older, responsible
child. All children should WALK, not
run from house to house and use the
sidewalk if available, rather than walk
in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns
and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.
Choosing Safe Houses: Children
should go only to homes where the
residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.

How To Operate Your Furnace
By Jonathan Winters, Maintenance Supervisor
There are NO Air Conditioning systems in residential
units at University Village Apartments! Our generally
mild Mediterranean climate, proximity to the bay and the
Golden Gate breeze means that there are very few hot
days in the year. The best way to cool your apartment is
to open windows to the foggy breezes. September and
October are generally some of our warmest--and loveliest--months.
than ~70(F) degrees to maintain
a comfortable temperature
for when you are at home.
For times of day when you
are not at home or asleep,
your thermostat should be set-back several degrees so it
does not needlessly heat space and waste energy.
However, soon enough the winds will turn cold and you
will begin to operate your furnace. For information on
programming your thermostat, please check your packet
of manuals, typically located in the kitchen pantry or hall
closet. If you need assistance on programming your particular type of thermostat, check with the office.
Additionally, our heaters are "hydronic", meaning they are
powered by the same water heater that produces your
domestic hot water. If you turn the heat up higher than
necessary (i.e., 80 (F) degrees) then you will affect the
amount of hot water available for bathing or kitchen use.
It will also needlessly stress the hot water heater.
Most thermostats have four settings for a 24-hour period. You should not need to set your thermostat higher

Halloween! Sunday, October 31. It’s American tradition to go trick-or-treating on Halloween Night! Children knock on
the doors in their neighborhood and say “trick-or-treat,” hoping to receive a small piece of candy or other snack. If you
will be home and would like to hand out candy, it’s helpful to put a sign on your door to let trick-or-treaters know they
are welcome. If you have a baby who will be sleeping, you may want to put a sign on your door asking people not to
knock or ring the doorbell. We wish you all a safe and happy Halloween!
