LEADERS are BORN or MADE? By Dr. Shailesh Thaker PREFACE: I have found thousands of leaders across the world but most of the time the world has faced crisis for leadership. Leadership is certainly a skill and can be learnt and acquired by rigorous efforts. Leadership is required at all levels. A Leader has to create leaders at all levels as, no leader lives in the world with permanency. To become an immortal leader, a leader has to follow the principles and guideline of leadership. Brave leaders emerged on the globe during the time of crisis of any nation, its condition of the nation etc. One powerful idea of selflessness and…. A leader emerges Are Leaders born or made? Do you believe that Leaders have natural gifts? Do you think leaders require certain guts within? What are the most important qualities of a leader? The four ―I‖ model is very popular in leadership - Intention, Intuition, Impact and Innovation. Leaders can be made just as genius. Can this world will soon know the formula of creating geniuses. According to the latest research, genius isn‘t a natural trait - it‘s a learned skill. The ―genius research‖ has found that the so-called ―geniuses‖ invested the equivalent of 10 years singularly focused on their chosen sport/business/craft. Any one, who invests decades with dedication and determination in a particular field, will be a master. People need consistency and continuity in performance; I have written in my new book ―Mission accomplished‖ that, leadership is a consistency in performance not continuity in position. With less than average intelligence, people are able to rack up a winning record before retiring that would make any leader proud. Cause (worthy of commitment) Space (room for/encouragement for initiative) Decency (respect, humane) I remember my Takkamasu (Osaka, Japan) experience during the Asia-Pacific conference. I was invited at a training programme for 120 minutes on ―Design your destiny‖. After completion of the programme, I was sharing a cup of coffee with few participants in the conference hall (Usually it happens with trainer) in-between one of the participant asked me: ―why you have travelled for at least 40 hours for 2 hours training session? I simply answered him‖, ―CAUSE! I have a cause in the life and once you start living with cause, no because affect‖. He listens and smiled…. Space: There is a large room for self improvement. No one can issue a certificate for Perfect Behavior. The World has thousands of leaders but the world is certainly in crisis of leadership. A Leader is always in search of excellence. A Leader always finds space for improvement. Decency is a heart loving instrument. Each eye is in search of decency. Decency cannot be defined, it is to be realized. Decency is the other name of love, sunset, flowers, chirping of birds, the white line in the sky, the silver line in black clouds and spring moving from forest. 4/ INNOVATION THE ULTIMATE VIRUS Even in the Great Depression innovation doesn't stop. In fact, some of our biggest innovations came then, from the jet engine to the chocolate-chip cookie. Television was just being rolled out, and, by the way, Hewlett-Packard was founded in the 1930s. Barry Jaruzelski, partner at Booz & Co. The slippage in research and development spending captured in Booz & Co.'s survey of giant companies around the globe for 2009 shouldn't surprise anyone. But its finding of an increased "R&D intensity" seems a sign of hope for future growth. The overall intensity rating — showing R&D as a percentage of sales — climbed to 3.75% among the world's 1,000 companies that spend the most on innovation. That was up from 3.46% in 2008. By contrast, in 2009 sales, general, and administrative spending fell 5.4%, and capital expenditures plunged 17.5%. "A typical company view was, 'I cut capital spending because I don't need incremental capacity with demand down,' and SG&A is a bit of a necessary evil," says Booz partner and report coauthor Barry Jaruzelski. "But they cut R&D last; that's the future revenue stream that these companies are protecting." The Booz study, titled "Global Innovation 1000," also provides a breakdown of R&D intensity by the industry, creating a picture of where the greatest interest in development lies. A huge R&D hit in the automobile industry, with R&D spending off 14.3%, was sharper than the 12.7% decrease in industry revenue. In fact, the auto industry's falloff in spending represented fully two-thirds of the $18 billion in lower R&D spending among the 1,000 companies surveyed. The computing and electronics industry recorded a 6.7% decline in both revenues and R&D, meaning its intensity measurement was unchanged. That category remains the largest in dollars of R&D spending, with health care at number two. (Autos ranked third.) However, pharmaceutical company Roche Holding rated the top position in innovation spending, with its 11.6% rise in R&D, to $9.1 billion. As number one, it replaced Toyota, which cut it‘s spending nearly 20%, falling to the fourth place, according to the Booz survey. Across a range of industries, though, Jaruzelski sees this year and next year as the real test of companies' commitment to innovation. And he suspects most companies will pass that test by sharply raising R&D spending and measuring greater intensity as well. In the auto industry, the increase in intensity could well be long term, in Jaruzelski's view. "There's going to have to be a significant commitment to the new power train, in terms of hybrids," he says. Without that, "there's no reason to think, as a percent of sales, that it will move more than a little from the 4% where it is now." Respondents were asked to identify the three companies they rate as most innovative, and by far the winner in that poll was ‗Apple‘. The perception of Apple as a leader, however, suggests there is more to being an innovation front-runner than just spending on R&D. Apple ranked 81st in R&D spending, and its intensity measurement was a mere 3.1%, compared with 12% for Google, the number-two ‗most innovative‘ company in the rating. (Microsoft, voted the sixth-mostinnovative company, was second overall in R&D spending, with the amount spent equating to 15.4% of revenues.) There's no question that 2009 corporate spending overall represented "a brutal hit," says Jaruzelski. "But remember that even in the Great Depression, innovation didn't stop. Did you ever notice that in our culture, we have the tendency to look outside ourselves for leadership? That‘s a trap. Isn‘t it time we looked inside ourselves to see how we can be the leader we want and need to be in the 21st century? I certainly think so. We need to be smart, and sharp. We have to be technology lovers; we need to align ourselves with our goals. We must follow result oriented leadership. We have to go to gender free, caste free, colour free and age free leadership. Meritocracy will be the new language of leadership. Albert Einstein said, ―The world we have created is a product of our way of thinking‖ Nothing will change in the future without fundamentally new ways of thinking‖. We are in the era of ―creative thinkers‖ versus ―reactive thinkers‖. Leaders are active never reactive .I must recall Ram Charan by his contributive comment: ―leadership means execution, execution, execution.‖ Results and talent will be on the top of the cake of leadership. Creative thinkers thrive on the question ―What‘s Possible?‖ Reactive thinkers ask, ―What‘s wrong?‖ or ―Who‘s to be blamed?‖ Reactive thinkers live in reaction and response to circumstances. Creative thinkers go beyond circumstances and situations. Leaders never play blame a game. Leadership of new era is not to react but to act. In early days the formula of relationship was, ‗love the person and use him if required in life. Now the formula is different it is first see, how much you can use him in life then love him accordingly‘ AHHH! YES. Business leaders invest accordingly. They think of profit only, I repeat only profit. If they find this relationship can be profitable and in the later stage of life it can give handsome returns then they make huge investments. They even share future plans and find out how long both can help each other in achieving future plans (emotions and true love have no space) How to win over those relationships is a key fundamental. Here right and wrong in relationship have no space. The space is occupied by profit only. I came across a business man in a social function in India, he shared with me that, I am a businessman and looking forward for profit only. What can help me are my fundamentals and my matrix. I am clear on my paradox. You may feel its wrong, but it is your issue not mine. SAD BUT TRUE (Absolute business and absolute returns. Rule to lead relationship is only profit, nothing less than it. ) 7/ FIRE! FIRE! AND ONLY FIRE! 21st century is an era of fire. Steve Jobs has fire inside. It is constantly burning. Bill Gates has fire inside to take Microsoft to a new level .Black Beery is putting 100 percentage to put its place in the world with the inner desire I- Phone is pursuing to capture global market. Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a fire inside. My favourite quotation is ―PUT FIRE IN TO YOUR MIND OR PUT YOUR MIND IN TO FIRE.‖ Leaders love to die with this fire than with ice. A whole life lived so cold that had never warmed me or my neighbours or peers or society is useless and totally wasted opportunity. Life is a contract with fire to lead us ahead to the next generation. Fire assumes different shapes at different times. Leaders are moving from ―can do‖ to ―must do.‖ Leadership is from where we are to where we must be. To lead a life is to light a fire and spark every day. Courage is fire. Risk is fire. Action is fire. Energy is fire. Decisiveness is fire. ―Living with this inner fire to move mountains that comes my way of fulfillment is life‖ Famous proverb ‗Even God does not prefer cold rice‘ The World needs warmth in relationship, sparking results, effective communication and contributory actions. Leaders live with a blood group of fire positive. Leader live life in a ‗fire zone.‘ 8/ IT IS NEVER EASY FOR A LEADER It isn't easy being CEO of a public company. The glamour days of CEO rock stars and highflying stock prices are gone. Companies are under constant scrutiny by activist investors, aggressive regulators, aggrieved customers and aggravated employees. As the public face of their companies, CEOs bear the brunt of that criticism. Today the Twin Cities are blessed with a bumper crop of CEOs -- the best group in my 40 years here. From U.S. Bancorp's Richard Davis, Cargill's Greg Page, Best Buy's Brian Dunn and 3M's George Buckley to General Mills' Ken Powell, Medtronic's Bill Hawkins and Ecolab's Doug Baker, these CEOs are building great enterprises and leadership in their industries. But none has faced the challenges that awaited Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel when he stepped into the shoes of predecessor Bob Ulrich. Serving on Target's board from 1993 to 2005, I watched Ulrich transform the company from a multiformat retailer into a focused mass merchant. Thanks to Steinhafel's merchandising genius, Target has found a sustainable niche a cut above Wal-Mart with creative offerings others can't match in value. Steinhafel became Target's CEO in May 2008, just as the economy was sinking into recession. Hard times caused shoppers to be more frugal. Wal-Mart attacked Target's core merchandising business. More recently, Target survived what many consider a faux pas in supporting MN Forward's projobs campaign. Funds wound up supporting gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who has taken anti-gay policy positions. GLBT organizations feared Target was abandoning its pro-gay stands. Steinhafel had barely moved into the CEO's chair when Target's strategy was challenged by activist investor William Ackman. Buying up 7.8 percent of Target shares at retail's peak in July 2007, Ackman watched his holdings slide as retail stocks fell. Ackman demanded that Target spin off its credit cards. After lengthy discussions, Target's board sold half of its card operations but retained management control. Ackman initially congratulated Steinhafel on the move, but later demanded that Target sell off the remaining 50 percent. Steinhafel and the board refused. Next Ackman proposed that Target transfer the land and buildings that house Target stores into a real estate investment trust. That would have increased Target's operating costs by $1.4 billion and split control over its real estate and merchandising arms. Steinhafel and the board were steadfast in rejecting Ackman's financial engineering ploys. Ackman responded with a proxy contest to replace four Target directors with his slate of five directors. While Target took the high road, Ackman went for the jugular, attacking long-standing directors like Wells Fargo Chair Richard Kovacevich for being "complacent." Neither Steinhafel nor the board flinched. Instead of challenging Ackman, Steinhafel met Target's major shareholders. Before the votes were counted at Target's 2009 annual meeting, Ackman gave a speech invoking the likes of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Shareholders apparently didn't buy his act. More than 70 percent of votes were cast for the Target directors. Always classy, Steinhafel shook Ackman's hand and said the proxy battle provided him the opportunity to spend extra time with Target shareholders. The criticisms of Target's contributions to MN Forward were perhaps more painful than either Ackman's attacks or Wal-Mart challenges. Suggestions that Target was somehow "anti-gay" cut deeply. The worst one could say about this incident is that Steinhafel may have been naive. But he admitted his mistake and reaffirmed the company's long-standing support for gay rights. As he told, "Target has the most gay-friendly policies in this state." Despite these challenges, Steinhafel never took his focus off merchandising. In the past 18 months, he has led a sharp turnaround from shrinking same-store sales during the recession. Shareholders have responded by driving up Target shares from lows of $26 in 2008 to $59 last week. For all the challenges it has faced, Target has never lost sight of pleasing its customers, nor has it wavered in its commitment to give 5 percent of earnings to philanthropic causes. Most important of all, Target created 30,000 jobs in Minnesota in the last 30 years. For CEOs of major companies like Target, there will always be challenges, disappointments, and missteps. The bottom-line measurement is, did you create sustainable value for your customers, employees, shareholders and your communities? The record is clear: Steinhafel is excelling in all four categories. I know Apple is supposed to be the byword for everything wonderful and, as a Mac user, I am an enthusiast. But I‘m not a blind follower and there are aspects of Apple Computers that are less lovely than perhaps meet the eye. Chief among these is its use of competition to motivate employees. According to a recent ‗confession‘ by an Apple store employee, sales matrics are posted so that everyone can see them. It shows you how much money each person is pulling in for the company. If you aren‘t doing very well, you start getting manager meetings, and they sit you down and try to figure out why you aren‘t selling more. Competition as Motivator In other words, they‘re hoping the salespeople are competitive enough to want to appear at the top of the list - or at least afraid of turning up near the bottom. ―We aren‘t paid on commission, but you fear for your job if you‘re not selling enough.‖ In the current economic climate, no manager needs to say anything to ratchet up that fear. This is exactly the same sales technique that Lehman Brothers used. Brad Ruderman worked there, and here‘s how it made him feel: ―I was so motivated to gain acceptance. It wasn‘t greed. I didn‘t need anything. It was about my personal scoreboard with everyone else. Sometimes there‘d be three days left in the month and I didn‘t hit last month‘s target so I‘d push the envelope to do some things not always in the best interest of my client. I lost all morals, all ethics, in the interest of staying in the game.‖ Competitive management games like these are simple and well understood: they provoke everyone‘s competitive instincts in the hope that they‘ll boost performance. The regular and predictable downside is that they also result in employees cramming products down customers‘ throats that they don‘t want and subsequently regret. Almost every fraudster I‘ve ever interviewed cut his teeth in this kind of sales environment - not least because it taught them how persuasive they could be when selling junk. Selling Junk ―We‘re supposed to sell Apple care product support with just about everything, and honestly, those aren‘t that hard to sell, since they aren‘t a bad deal. But we‘re also supposed to push MobileMe, and that‘s really hard to sell.‖ (It‘s really hard to sell because it‘s really hard to explain because it‘s really hard to use evidence, if it were needed, that the company doesn‘t have a magic touch when it comes to everything. Nor does it have consistent genius in making software simple; MobileMe doesn‘t sell because it‘s a bear!) Many managers like to think that they can manipulate human competitive instincts to produce record-breaking results. In doing so, they almost always display a naïve misunderstanding of just how powerful competitiveness is. Once let loose, it will trample over everything not just ethics and morals but common decency, a secure sense of self and of the law, a love of collaboration. It was management techniques like these that left homeowners in houses with mortgages they couldn‘t afford and portfolio managers with derivatives they didn‘t understand. You can argue that being left with a bottle of $50 iKlear Apple Polish I didn‘t really need isn‘t the same scale of iniquity - and I‘d agree with you. But Lehman Brothers is bad company to keep. And preying on individuals‘ insecurities in order to boost the corporate profits of a company already sitting on a mountain of cash (and I write this as an Apple shareholder) shames everyone. 10/ LEADERS ENCASH USP If there is nothing very special about your work, no matter how hard you apply yourself you won‘t get noticed, and that increasingly means you won‘t get paid much either.‖ —Michael Goldhaber, Wire 11/ SELL YOURSELF LIKE SONY OR GOOLGE You really have to stand for something. . Did you head the world cup-winning captain of England‘s Twenty20 cricket, Paul Collingwood, in his post-match interview? Having just beaten Australia, Collingwood was asked what had led to England‘s triumph. His reply contained comments that immediately caught my attention: * ―The guys are just using their brains out there, making good decisions‖; * ―The guys have just executed their plains‖; * ―They‘ve really communicated well over the past few weeks‖. Decision-making, planning and communication: did I miss something or is England‘s victory the result of implementing best management practice? Most of the sports teams that I follow regularly have a ―bad day at the office‖ (Is it your‘s?) but I hadn‘t realised that sportsmen and women followed the business management advice of writers such as Peter Drucker, Tom Peters or CK Prahalad. If only our sports stars had benefitted from the insights of management gurus earlier. For example: * Michael Jordan would have read the classic Harvard Business Review article, The Core Competence of The Corporation, and would never have attempted a second career in baseball. * Could Gazza have avoided the tears that followed his yellow card in the Italia ‘90 World Cup semi-final if he had fully understood and digested the principles behind Daniel Goleman‘s Emotional Intelligence? * Perhaps Tim Henman would have won Wimbledon if he had applied the lessons from Jim Collins‘s Good to Great (never mind your second serve, Tim, what‘s your hedgehog concept?) But there‘s something not quite right with sportsmen and women talking and acting like they‘ve just walked out of the boardroom rather than the changing room. We want our sports stars to be like artists, actors or rock stars. We want them to have natural talent that doesn‘t demand the steady, detailed application and practice that we mere mortals require. Modern sport, though, is business and it seems that the influence of business and management is endemic. Perhaps it‘s just taken a little longer for it to register with the English cricket XI than other sports teams. Even so, WG Grace must be re-engineering in his grave. 13/ Change is Good! How’s Your Leadership in the Mid I spent most of last week with clients in New York City. Wow, that city does move!! There is always something going on; so much excitement to see and energy to feel!! It‘s a melting pot of people, interests, food and shopping – something for everyone, if you can find it amidst the crowds and activity. I feel like our world, in general, is in a big state of activity as well. So many political and economic changes are driving companies to make adjustments. Companies are reacting with changes in their workforce, service offerings and compensation…and employees are feeling the effects. Don‘t get me wrong, change can certainly be a good thing. Sometimes, it‘s truly needed. Change isn‘t always easy for people to digest. They tend to have an immediate and sometimes physical reaction to any announcement of change. But the best companies will always adjust…and so change will be part of the equation. Leaders should be cognizant of the impact of change on their team and be ready to support people through the process. Because the basic human need of feeling secure and valued is innate in all of us, leaders should be prepared to help nurture these emotions as change occurs. I‘ve started a list of things that leaders can be proactive in doing to help ensure a smooth transition for their employees. What would you add to the list? Communicate the change effectively. This is critical to success of any change. A clear expectation must be set with as many details as can be provided (and then followed-through on!) Leaders should be transparent…but that doesn‘t mean they should disclose every single detail. It means they should be authentic and honest, while they share as much as they can at the right times. Involve your team in change, when possible. Rosabeth Moss Kanter once said, ―Change is a threat when done to me, but an opportunity when done by me.‖ People want to play a part on what‘s happening to their future. Engage their expertise to guide the change and they will reward you by being more energized by it. Remain consistent in your core values. While processes, procedures and services may be changing, your people need to see the stability of your core values. This will help them to remain confident in what‘s happening, even if all the questions can‘t be answered. Share the vision and hope for the change. This is what I often refer to as the ―power of why.‖ Most people are fairly purpose-driven. They want affect change and have an impact, so it‘s important to share the value and benefit of the change, as well as to help each person understand their role in that bigger picture. Be an obstacle-remover. In times of change, more than ever, a leader must provide the right tools for success and remove obstacles that are impeding progress. Leaders should encourage open communication and innovation. They should also allow graceful failures. This is where great leadership will come through, as the true ―rallying‖ of the team is what facilitate a smooth transition through change. 14/ YOU ARE YOUR CALENDAR The calendar never lies. Our personality should match our calendar. Our priority, our commitment, our communication and our behavior should match our calendar. Once, it is declared and published - That‘s all. No change is incorporated in the calendar as it is pure, perfect, true, clear and real. All these qualities are to be incorporated in a leader. Most important quality of a calendar is that it never lies. Commitment to decisions is the essence of leadership. Vincent Lombardi said ―The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor.‖ We have to follow our commitments one by one. We cannot change our commitments as the situation, condition and priority changes. A Lot of time situations come when we want to give up but because of our calendar we go for it as our calendar never lies. Leaders never lie to themselves. 15/ LEADERS TRAVEL ON THE PATH TO BECOME THE PATH Founder of yahoo Jerry Yang says ―I am determined for us to define our own path.‖ I‘m a big believer in Doing versus Talking. Leaders are focused on making changes from the inside out and they will get out there when the time is right. Brain is responsible for the growth of us. In the end, leaders have to prove that it was inside – out. Remember, the rule of life is treating your brain as a partner in life. Leaders focus on their team, structure, resources, strategy and communication. All this always brings them to the next level (Living at the same level is dying).Leader do homework to bring significance change in the life. ―Stepping onto a brand-new path is difficult, but not more difficult than remaining in a situation‖ profoundly asserted by Maya Angelou. Leaders create a new path or they become a path themselves. Only this path saves us in the world. This path makes things happen. We should pursue on this path constantly till our last breath. The real joy comes when we too become a path by ourselves. Let the brightness comes by its own. Let the path shine. Let the path become path for coming generations to explore their talent. And that is the bottom line the two wanted to maintain throughout the company even after its infancy. Going to work at Yahoo! is a far cry from what most CEOs might be used to. The average employee is 29 years old and actually enjoys going to work. Why? Because it is not only a creative atmosphere, but a fun and casual one as well. The company‘s slogan early on was ―Do what‘s crazy, but not stupid!‖ Yang and Filo understood the importance of creating a fun atmosphere at work. The employees work long hours, but management is all too aware of that. As such, they make sure that the work environment caters to every need of theirs. From video games throughout to catered lunch programs, Yahoo!‘s internal culture is one of the company‘s top priorities. Yang and Filo wanted their company to be a place where people loved coming to work, just as they did. By focusing on creating a culture that makes employees feel at home, they have begun finding many employees who prefer staying at work over going home, simply because it is more fun. Employees are also able to deduct 15 percent of their earnings to purchase company stock. That stock price is further discounted to 85 percent of the going market value. Yang and Filo want to encourage their employees to be as interactive as the product they work so hard to create. I like fun theory. Life is gifted to mankind for peace, love, joy and satisfaction. Never share your problems with people because 90 percent are not interested in the listening and remaining 10 percent are not ready to help you. He was not fighting for the money or applause or standing ovation or captainship or physical success. His goal was to prove his brilliance .He plays for his inner satisfaction .He was optimizing his potentials against all odds and challenges. Simply, mind blowing and 100 salutes!! WHAT MONEY WON’T BUY? I‘m asked to define success in my workshop ―Motivation and achievement laboratory.‖ Here is one of my reflections: I think success is a worthy realization of your efforts. It is a situation where things money will buy and all of the things that money won‘t buy. Money can buy comfort. The value of money is to maintain comfort level in life. Do love money and I acknowledge presence of money in life .But I love more things which money cannot buy. Money can certainly give me luxury but not peace of mind. Money cannot buy mother‘s love. Money can certainly offer a luxurious bedroom but not sound sleep. Money can help me in eating hundreds of items but not the ability to digest those items. Money can put me in the front seat by my donations but cannot make me a legend. Money cannot buy feelings of relationship. Money cannot create gems in the deep sea. Money cannot stop tears of my eyes. Money can create spectacles with golden frames but cannot buy insight. Mothers have demonstrated in the world that money is not a source of motivation. I laugh at the people who spoil relationships for money. The real excitement of life lies in living life. Dr. Joseph Murphy defines money in the ―Power of subconscious mind.‖ I love money. Money is the recipe which prepares the dish of comfort in the life. Money makes things available in life. Let us go to play the game of life with the win-win formula to have enough money to have all experiences of life. AUH! YAAH! That‘s great and more exciting. Do you have tears in the eyes? Are you fired for mistakes in the company? All of us are passing through the same tunnel. Proactiveness is a heart of success and accomplishment. None of us is perfect. We all have to focus on strength. Great things can be accomplished by strength and unstoppable efforts. Remember, every end is a new beginning. In my views, Proactiveness is a great source of success. Just love proactiveness. Today‘s world is a world of results. Everyone wants to go with the people ―who makes things happen‖. Be a result oriented leader. Remember, someone will come and create results is an illusion. One has to walk on the path of success and history is a witness. So love proactiveness. Of course, a proactive person produces success. If leaders want to create results they have to take things in to their hands .They have to jump in to valley of efforts. Work with proactiveness, of course, it gives pain or failure or mistakes (who is complete in the world) but leaders love to go with initiativeness. To me it is a very important tool of the compass of success. Using tools is everything for life….success. It is a great source behind success. We get away from the life of the people unconsciously because of power, body chemistry, thinking wave length or status or anything……but we draw demarcation among our own people. The love quotient found them is at a poor stage. Love in the relationship leads us to fullest level of kindness. Kindness in the relationship is the best status. We should sympathize with pain as we have sympathies with joy and pleasure. Yes, it can be too hard but no road is a smooth road for passengers of success. More pain creates more powerful results. A woman becomes mother after suffering heavy pain during pregnancy. The best creature comes to the planet after inevitable pain. We can learn more from pain but unfortunately we have framed our mind, not to learn anything from pain. Pain can develop wisdom and make us wiser to live. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. 35/ LEADERS KICK COWARDS OR LIARS On June 6, 1944, 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed in Normandy to establish a foothold in France and begin the drive to Berlin and victory in Europe in World War II. It‘s easy to remember the victory and to praise the leaders and stand in awe of their competence and confidence. But there were plenty of uncertainties at the time. Nothing this large or complex had ever been attempted. The great mass of US troops were still untested in battle. The excellent German army was just across the Channel in well-prepared fortifications. They were led by one of Germany‘s legendary military leaders, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Even the weather was a factor. Eisenhower had already postponed the invasion because of some of the worst storms in memory. When he gave the order to launch the operation on June 6, he had only the most rudimentary weather information to go on. Since we know how things came out, it‘s easy to underestimate the uncertainty. But, for Ike there were huge gaps in information, complex operations that could break down, and a determined foe whose actions would influence the outcome of the day. He faced the very real possibility that the invasion would fail and that thousands of Allied men would die without achieving victory. As he thought about that, he wrote out the message he would release if things went badly. Here it is. ―Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone.‖ That kind of willingness to take responsibility is rare today. Today our leaders often deny any part in decisions that turned out wrong. They practice the art of spin. How about if, just for the Fourth of July, we talk less about leadership and think more about responsibility? Boss‘s Bottom Line No one wants to work with a coward or a liar. Prior to sleep is the best time to review our selves. 38/ LUCK IS IN THE COMPASS OF A LEADER ―Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.‖ Asserted by Seneca (Roman philosopher, mid-1st century AD) A decade ago, I set out to investigate luck. I wanted to examine the impact on people‘s lives of chance opportunities, lucky breaks and being in the right place at the right time. After many experiments, now I can understand why some people are luckier than others and that it is possible to become luckier. To launch my study, I placed advertisements in national newspapers and magazines, asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to contact me. Over the years, 400 extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research from all walks of life: the youngest is an 18-yearold student, the oldest an 84-year-old retired accountant. Thinking of something good that happened the day before, boost happiness Jessica, a 42-year-old forensic scientist, is typical of the lucky group. As she explained: ―I have my dream job, two wonderful children and a great guy whom I love very much. It‘s amazing; when I look back at my life, I realise I have been lucky in just about every area.‖ In contrast, Carolyn, a 34-year-old care assistant, is typical of the unlucky group. She is accidentprone. In one week, she twisted her ankle in a pothole, injured her back in another fall and reversed her car into a tree during a driving lesson. She was also unlucky in love and felt she was always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Over the years, I interviewed these volunteers, asked them to complete diaries, questionnaires and intelligence tests, and invited them to participate in experiments. The findings have revealed that although unlucky people have almost no insight into the real causes of their good and bad luck, their thoughts and behaviour are responsible for much of their fortune. Take the case of chance opportunities. Lucky people consistently encounter such opportunities, whereas unlucky people do not. I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to differences in their ability to spot such opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. On an average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs, whereas the lucky people took just seconds. Why? Because the second page of the newspaper contained the message: ―Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.‖ This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than 2in high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it. For fun, I placed a second large message halfway through the newspaper: ―Stop counting. Tell the experimenter you has seen this and win £250.‖ Again, the unlucky people missed the opportunity because they were still too busy looking for photographs. Personality tests revealed that unlucky people are generally much more tensed than lucky people, and research has shown that anxiety disrupts people‘s ability to notice the unexpected. In one experiment, people were asked to watch a moving dot in the centre of a computer screen. Without warning, large dots would occasionally be flashed at the edges of the screen. Nearly all participants noticed these large dots. The experiment was then repeated with a second group of people, who were offered a large financial reward for accurately watching the centre dot, creating more anxiety. They became focused on the centre dot and more than a third of them missed the large dots when they appeared on the screen. The harder they looked, the less they saw. And so it is with luck - unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to parties intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and as a result miss other types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research revealed that lucky people generate good fortune via four basic principles. They are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition, create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good. I wondered whether these four principles could be used to increase the amount of good luck that people encounter in their lives. To find out, I created a ―luck school‖ - a simple experiment that examined whether people‘s luck can be enhanced by getting them to think and behave like a lucky person. I asked a group of lucky and unlucky volunteers to spend a month carrying out exercises designed to help them think and behave like a lucky person. These exercises helped them spot chance opportunities, listen to their intuition, expect to be lucky, and be more resilient to bad luck. One month later, the volunteers returned and described what had happened. The results were dramatic: 80 per cent of people were now happier, more satisfied with their lives and, perhaps most important of all, luckier. While lucky people became luckier, the unlucky had become lucky. Take Carolyn, whom I introduced at the start of this article. After graduating from ―luck school‖, she has passed her driving test after three years of trying, was no longer accident-prone and became more confident. In the wake of these studies, I think there are three easy techniques that can help to maximise good fortune: * Unlucky people often fail to follow their intuition when making a choice, whereas lucky people tend to respect hunches. Lucky people are interested in how they both think and feel about the various options, rather than simply looking at the rational side of the situation. I think this helps them because gut feelings act as an alarm bell - a reason to consider a decision carefully. * Unlucky people tend to be creatures of routine. They tend to take the same route to and from work and talk to the same types of people at parties. In contrast, many lucky people try to introduce variety into their lives. For example, one person described how he thought of a colour before arriving at a party and then introduced himself to people wearing that colour. This kind of behaviour boosts the likelihood of chance opportunities by introducing variety. * Lucky people tend to see the positive side of their ill fortune. They imagine how things could have been worse. In one interview, a lucky volunteer arrived with his leg in a plaster cast and described how he had fallen down a flight of stairs. I asked him whether he still felt lucky and he cheerfully explained that he felt luckier than before. As he pointed out, he could have broken his neck. Luck is what you have left over after you give 100 percent. When you see success of few people you believe in some invisible factors. I call it luck. 39/ ARE YOU BUSY OR PRODUCTIVE? People, working in a company, can be of two kinds; ones who are productive, produce results, their performance adds value to the overall scheme of things and the others look busy, but are not really productive, writes Priya Kumar of the Economic Times. There are certain attributes that define both the categories. According to Kumar, the productive workers always have a plan for the day and they get people to work and are great taskmasters. Whenever they are dealing with a customer, subordinate or senior, they mean business. On the other hand, the looking-busy workers have no plan for their own. They spend their time tending to work that comes their way and are a target for the taskmasters to run chores for them. Apart from having their own plan, the productive workers work the plan. They are creative, responsible and accountable. As they take responsibility and own up the results, no matter good or bad, they instinctively rise to leadership. But the looking-busy workers wait for instructions. They don‘t take decisions themselves and bank on others to make decisions for them. Distractive by nature, these workers always need to be pushed and motivated to get on track with their work. The productive workers are able to deliver results. They are not afraid of making mistakes, instead they learn from their mistakes. They are optimistic in their attitude, not being afraid of unexpected results. Unlike the productive workers, the looking busy workers think that delivering results is a frightful task. Although they can deliver daily tasks, results span over a period of time and they cannot keep vision of that. Because of low self esteem and lessening faith in their abilities, success is an alien thought to the looking busy workers. For a rising career graph, one has to produce results. Many people would like to believe themselves as productive, but it is only a comparative analysis that can give a clearer picture. Risks have to be taken and challenges have to be faced. More occupied person freeer as he has skills of priortisation. Legends know the value of productivity. 40/ BLAME IS AN UNRELIABLE INTELIGENCE Leaders never think others are responsible for their situation assign the blame to various conditions, organization, society or people. Sometime people blame ―systems‖. By playing games of blame what do people want to prove? Their innocence! We are totally responsible for what We see, We feel, We experience, We achieve, We lose, We gain, We create And We destroy. Let us take life in our hands. What happens? Now no one can blame for our accomplishment and failure. Leaders never prefer to go to excuses. Never make other responsible for their failure. I would love to select share credit. But I prefer to go to what am I and what have I? In fact, it is a place to start from where are you to where you want to go, with what you have. When we blame we show our incapacity and capability to bring results. Leadership is never to blame anyone for your situation and position. We should fix the problem, not the blame. We must have guts inside to accept the failures or mistakes which we make. When a patient dies in hospital, we ask what happened. How does he die? We never asked who the doctor was. Why in company do we ask, who is responsible? He can be a messenger, service staff, junior executive, or anyone Wayne Dyer directs us by ―All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, and regardless of how much you blame him, it will not change you.‖ A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else. 41/ LEADER KNOWS PART OF ROUTINE Its‘ halftime at Southwest Airlines‘ annual Halloween party — a ritual meant to celebrate the carrier‘s exuberant employees and freewheeling culture — and Gary Kelly is feeling a bit wistful. ―I was determined to be a man this year,‖ he says. Gone is the flamboyance of his previous costumes. He has attended as Edna Turnblad from the musical ―Hairspray‖ (for which he had to shave his legs, don a wig and wear a pink dress) and as Dorothy from the ―The Wizard of Oz.‖ In one particularly memorable impersonation, he was Gene Simmons of the hard-rock band Kiss. This year, Mr. Kelly, who also happens to be Southwest‘s chairman and chief executive, is dressed as Woody, the friendly pull-string doll from ―Toy Story.‖ ―As long as you don‘t mind being ridiculed all day,‖ he says of his Halloween outfits, ―it‘s part of the routine.‖ Nearby, Mike Van de Ven, the chief operating officer, is rolling on the floor, posing for pictures, and greeting children and parents with a wide grin in his Buzz Lightyear costume. ―This shows you how little we have to do to run the airline,‖ says Mr. Van de Ven. ―The less we do, the better it runs.‖ Southwest doesn‘t quite fly on auto-pilot, but as it prepares for its 40th birthday next year, it is flush with success. Last year, it flew 86 million passengers, more than any other airline within the United States. It operates 3,200 flights a day, owns a fleet of 544 planes and serves 69 domestic cities from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and from Lubbock, Tex., to Buffalo. When rival airlines were bleeding billions of dollars, Southwest was churning out consistent profits as a low-cost carrier — even when fuel prices soared. And in September, in its boldest corporate move since it started flying outside of Texas, Southwest announced that it would buy AirTran Airways for $1.4 billion, increasing both its revenue and its capacity by nearly 25 percent in a single stroke. Yet Southwest finds itself at a pivotal moment. Its success was built on a signature cocktail of low costs, low fares, frequent flights and a rapid expansion into new cities. But with high fuel prices, growth has been harder to find, and analysts have questioned whether the airline can sustain its singular operating style. Battered in part by Southwest‘s growth, traditional airlines have restructured their operations over the last decade — often through painful bankruptcy proceedings — and have narrowed the gap. Through mergers and global alliances, Delta Air Lines, which acquired Northwest in 2008, and the more recently merged United Airlines and Continental, are now more formidable rivals. They can offer their passengers access to cities across the United States along with connections to the four corners of the world — something Southwest cannot do. Newer rivals, meanwhile, often modeled after Southwest, are thriving at the other end of the spectrum. Thanks to efficient operations, lower costs and an attention to customer service, these carriers — such as JetBlue Airways and Allegiant Airlines — are threatening Southwest‘s dominance in the low-fare trade. ―Southwest‘s business has become more complicated than the simple model that served them so well for 39 years,‖ says William S. Swelbar, a research engineer at the International Center for Air Transportation at M.I.T. ―They are at an inflection point. They are not a young and nimble corporation anymore. This is now a mature company.‖ No longer the fiery start-up, Southwest now has the best-paid pilots, mechanics and flight attendants in the industry. Its unit labor cost — how much it pays its employees to fly one seat for one mile — rose 22 percent from 2002 to 2009, while the same measure dropped 34 percent at United, 7 percent at Continental, 26 percent at Delta and 11 percent at American Airlines. Southwest‘s 5,600 pilots earned $171,000, on average, in 2009, or 20 to 40 percent more than the average salary for pilots who fly bigger planes at those other airlines. The flip side, says Carl Kuwitzky, the president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots‘ Association, is that the company expects its employees to be more productive. Since Southwest typically flies shorter routes and schedules more daily flights, pilots can fly one hour longer each day than at other airlines, he says. This efficiency becomes a crucial component to the airline‘s edge. ―We work very hard for our company,‖ says Mr. Kuwitzky. ―And we recognize that we succeed if our company is successful.‖ Despite labor, Southwest still has lower overall costs than its traditional rivals. In the second quarter of 2009, Southwest‘s advantage could be seen in its total costs per available seat-mile. Those costs were 6 to 14 percent lower than at US Airways and American. (JetBlue and AirTran, on the other hand, have lower costs than Southwest.) Still, Wall Street remains skeptical. Southwest‘s stock price, like those of most other airlines, has languished. It has dropped 18 percent in the last five years — a generally rough period for the industry as oil prices surged and the economy slowed. In an investment research note, analysts at Morgan Stanley recently asked a provocative question: ―Is Southwest becoming a legacy airline?‖ ―REMEMBER what it was like before there was somebody else up there who loved you?‖ 42/ duplicate 24 WHAT IS YOUR FORMULA TO SUSTAIN SUCCESS FOR FOUR DECADES? ―If there is something I wants, nothing stops me.‖ Asserted by Calvin Klein. A man of extremes, Klein managed to turn his excitement about fashion and design into a lifelong career that has not only spawned a billion-dollar company, but has also revolutionized the way the world thinks about clothing. For Klein, ―doing everything as well as possible meant survival.‖ So, how did Klein manage to survive at the top for nearly four decades? He suggested 5 major lessons for the leaders. 1/ Push yourself to the limits. 2/ Become an expert. 3/ Do not afraid to be innovative. 4/ Broaden your appeal. 5/ Go after you want. We have to be unstoppable after our passion. None can, I repeat, none should stop you on this planet. Even you can move around the planet to accomplish what you wish to have. The happiness of life consists in mastering the passion .We can elevate ourselves to great heights by loving what we do. The way great fashion designer Klein does. Great can be accomplished by passionate attitude. What makes us to live and to drive? We should spend each day, each moment, and each breath to live with passion. We must find out what we love and like and what forces us to live for years with pleasure. Remember, the rule of life is to live with passion. Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things. 43/ MULTI TASKING VERSUS PURITY IN CONCENTRATION ―I know, I know. You‘d think I‘d have learned. Last week I wrote about the dangers of multitasking e.g. use of a cell phone while driving. But when I sent that email, I wasn‘t in a car. I was safe at my desk. What could go wrong? Well, I sent the client the message. Then I had to send him another one, this time with the attachment I had forgotten to append. Finally, my third email to him explained why that attachment wasn‘t what he was expecting. When I eventually refocused on the call, I realized I hadn‘t heard the question the Chair of the Board had asked me. I swear I wasn‘t smoking anything. But I might as well have been. A study showed that people distracted by incoming email and phone calls saw a 10-point fall in their IQs. What‘s the impact of a 10-point drop? The same as losing a night of sleep. More than twice the effect of smoking marijuana. Doing several things at once is a trick we play on ourselves, thinking we‘re getting more done. In reality, our productivity goes down by as much as 40%. We don‘t actually multitask. We switchtask, rapidly shifting from one thing to another, interrupting ourselves unproductively, and losing time in the process. You might think you‘re different, that you‘ve done it so much you‘ve become good at it. Practice makes perfect and all that. But you‘d be wrong. Research shows that heavy multitaskers are less competent at doing several things at once than light multitaskers. In other words, in contrast to almost everything else in your life, the more you multitask, the worse you are at it. Practice, in this case, works against you. I decided to do an experiment. For one week I would do no multitasking and see what happened. What techniques would help? Could I sustain a focus on one thing at a time for that long? For the most part, I succeeded. If I was on the phone, all I did was talk or listen on the phone. In a meeting I did nothing but focus on the meeting. Any interruptions — email, a knock on the door — I held off until I finished what I was working on. During the week I discovered six things: First, it was delightful. I noticed this most dramatically when I was with my children. I shut my cell phone off and found myself much more deeply engaged and present with them. I never realized how significantly a short moment of checking my email disengaged me from the people and things right there in front of me. Don‘t laugh, but I actually — for the first time in a while — noticed the beauty of leaves blowing in the wind. Second, I made significant progress on challenging projects, the kind that — like writing or strategizing — require thought and persistence. The kind I usually try to distract myself from. I stayed with each project when it got hard, and experienced a number of breakthroughs. Third, my stress dropped dramatically. Research shows that multitasking isn‘t just inefficient, it‘s stressful. And I found that to be true. It was a relief to do only one thing at a time. I felt liberated from the strain of keeping so many balls in the air at each moment. It felt reassuring to finish one thing before going to the next. Fourth, I lost all patience for things I felt were not a good use of my time. An hour-long meeting seemed interminably long. A meandering pointless conversation was excruciating. II became laser-focused on getting things done. Since I wasn‘t doing anything else, I got bored much more quickly. I had no tolerance for wasted time. Fifth, I had tremendous patience for things I felt were useful and enjoyable. When I listened to my wife Eleanor, I was in no rush. When I was brainstorming about a difficult problem, I stuck with it. Nothing else was competing for my attention so I was able to settle into the one thing I was doing. Sixth, there was no downside. I lost nothing by not multitasking. No projects were left unfinished. No one became frustrated with me for not answering a call or failing to return an email the second I received it. That‘s why it‘s so surprising that multitasking is so hard to resist. If there‘s no downside to stopping, why don‘t we all just stop? I think it‘s because our minds move considerably faster than the outside world. You can hear far more words a minute than someone else can speak. We have so much to do, why waste any time? So, while you‘re on the phone listening to someone, why not use that extra brain power to book a trip to Florence? What we neglect to realize is that we‘re already using that brain power to pick up nuance, think about what we‘re hearing, access our creativity, and stay connected to what‘s happening around us. It‘s not really extra brain power. And diverting it has negative consequences. So how do we resist the temptation? First, the obvious: the best way to avoid interruptions is to turn them off. Often I write at 6 am when there‘s nothing to distract me, I disconnect my computer from its wireless connection and turn my phone off. In my car, I leave my phone in the trunk. Drastic? Maybe. But most of us shouldn‘t trust ourselves. Second, the less obvious: Use your loss of patience to your advantage. Create unrealistically short deadlines. Cut all meetings in half. Give yourself a third of the times you think you need to accomplish something. There‘s nothing like a deadline to keep things moving. And when things are moving fast, we can‘t help but focus on them. How many people run a race while texting? If you really only have 30 minutes to finish a presentation you thought would take an hour, are you really going to answer an interrupting call? Interestingly, because multitasking is so stressful, single-tasking to meet a tight deadline will actually reduce your stress. In other words, giving yourself less time to do things could make you more productive and relaxed. Finally, it‘s good to remember that we‘re not perfect. Every once in a while it might be OK to allow for a little multitasking. As I was writing this, Daniel, my two-year-old son, walked into my office, climbed on my lap, and said ―Monsters, Inc. movie please.‖ So, here we are, I‘m finishing this piece on the left side of my computer screen while Daniel is on my lap watching a movie on the right side of my computer screen. Leaders sharpen skills, polish attitude and enhance knowledge constantly to prove their talent. We have talent inside and if we do not bring it out, we become slaves. Do not dole it. Do not hold it. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire spends his wealth. What is the fun to put a sun-dial in shade? I do not want to die...until I have faithfully made the most of my talent and cultivated the seed that was placed in me until the last small twig has grown.‖ Profoundly asserted by Kathe Kollwitz. Mediocrity declares hidden talent. Don‘t you think we all are responsible for talent given to all of us? I believe each one of us is a genius and possesses enormous talent. One of the most appealing experiences of my life took place on March 2005, when I was autographing after my keynote address on ―create cause not business‖ at the IBA school of Administration. One lady who asked for an autograph had such a compelling expression on her face that I knew I had to listen carefully to what she had to say. She shared with me that how to do self-talk. She spared 5 hours every week with herself, no interruption, only privacy. She meets her selves. WOW!!!What a way of leading life! Leaders always do believe in themselves profoundly. They have character and qualities of success. They have goals, sound personality, and humble, honest and cool brands. People around them can find nothing but Leaders in them. They become go getter and become happier each day. The most important opinion you have is the opinion you have of yourself, and the most important conversations you will ever have are the conversations you have with yourself. . .The reality is that you cannot consistently, consciously claim all the qualities . Leaders do add qualities in them and move on the quest to prove them as a crusader. A book ―The living way 80-20 principles ―authored Richard Coch demonstrated how to achieve more in less efforts. I have to start my day every day, as Pandit Ravi Shankar starts floating flute. We have to decide that we whether want to work at mystery level or average level? Great accomplishments have been made by average talent with confidence and determination. We have to ignite that spirit in us while going to our work place. We have to meet real genius inside us every day. Every day, have a value, because, we have to invest at least `10000 hours to mystery, skill or work. According to research, every world class master has invested at least 10,000 hours in expertising his skill. We cannot afford to lose hours as hours are already wasted in excuses and blaming. Believing in our potentiality even when the whole world does not believe in us is the real essence of leadership. I would like to quote the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson,‖ To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.‖ Success can be created by a series of performances and conscious deliberate efforts. We should treat our self as a brand ambassadors of organizations and behave as brand managers. No one can stop us in leading our worthy self as a brand ambassadors. It is estimated that if the Wal-Mart chain was its own economy, it would rank 30th in the world, behind Saudi Arabia. If Sam Walton were alive today, he would be the richest person in the world, with twice the fortune of Bill Gates. How did a farm boy from Oklahoma accomplish all of this? He Had Fun: ―I always prided myself on breaking everybody else‘s rules, and I always favored the mavericks who challenged my rules,‖ he said. Walton took a light approach to his business, never too serious to resist change and never unwilling to poke fun at himself. Success comes through only hard work is proved wrong by referring to the example of porters. Porters on railway station is an example of leadership. He demonstrates lot of management principles and leadership qualities. Business without risk is almost impossible. Risk management is very well showed by him while catching a running train to engage customer. Value of life is much higher than the cost what he gets in the return, even though he demonstrates risk. Customer delight is major quality. He pushes the baggage of a customer till the seat of customer in the coach. Sometimes, the seat of the customer is at the last of the train and he has to carry heavy baggage till the last coach. Customer pays the cost after satisfactory service only, if he is not satisfies then, he may cut the amount which is fixed up. Excellent negotiation skill is shown by him. He is an excellent team player. Team manages the show very well at the time of the train‘s arrival. They help other porters without any commercial advantage. They all follow discipline while putting a red shirt on at the time of work. Physical mastery is shown by him, he carries heavy baggage and invests very hard efforts to earn money. Sometimes, they carry baggages of customer till the last platform which is almost a mountain task for a passenger. He matches with urgency and time management very well. Sometimes, he has to adjust the baggage in the running train and deploy the customer in the train, only after that he gets his cost and wages. Wow!!!! What a risk taking attitude for managing life and business. He follows time management matrix 24*7 for 365 days. 68/ Alison Levine, with leadership lessons from the highest peaks and poles Alison Levine has climbed the highest peak on each continent, served as team captain of the 1st American Women‘s Everest Expedition and has skied to both the North and South Poles. She is an adjunct instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and founder of the consulting firm DareDevil Strategies TM. SmartBrief‘s Elena Ziebarth followed up with her after her keynote address at the 9th Annual Fuqua School of Business & Coach K Leadership Conference. In your speech, you emphasized that asking the right questions is a key part of leadership. What advice do you have on learning to do that well? I like to think about the outcome I‘m looking for, and then work backwards from there. Asking more questions is never going to set you back. You might annoy the hell out of someone, but no one ever died from being overly annoyed. When you shared your experience leading the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, you noted that skills and experience only get you so far — being a team player is vital to leadership. Why is this important? When dealing with extreme environments, it‘s crucial that every team member think like a leader. And by that I mean that they must all realize that their decisions and actions affect everyone on the team. If something happens to the leader of an Antarctic expedition, the rest of the team needs to be able to execute the action plan. Rescues may be delayed by weeks or months — or may even be impossible in certain situations, so if the leader goes down, it‘s up to the rest of the team to step up. You want to know that the person on either side of you is capable of helping to advance the team. Despite all your careful preparation for the Everest expedition, your team had to turn back from the summit because of weather. When making tough choices — like turning back with the summit in sight — what does a leader need to consider? Good leaders always think about how their actions (or inactions) are going to affect everyone else around them. Leadership in extreme environments means lives are on the line. Success is measured in terms of coming back alive — it‘s not about increasing revenue, profit or market share. Poor leadership can lead to consequences from which a person or team cannot recover. Learning from failure (your own and other people‘s) is one of the most important parts of becoming an effective leader. I don‘t consider not tagging the top of a mountain a failure. I consider coming home from an expedition in a body bag a failure — that‘s if they can recover your body. The lessons from your Denali trip emphasized that as a leader you have to work with limited resources — you can only take what you can put in your pack. What suggestions do you have for leaders in defining what to ―put in their packs?‖ How can you identify what is a ―need-to-have‖ and what is a ―nice-to-have‖ for you and your team? In terms of resources, it‘s a waste of time to stress about what you don‘t have. Consider most things ―nice to have.‖ If you‘ve got food, water and a place to sleep, you‘ve got everything you need. Anything else is a bonus. Look at a lack of resources as an opportunity to stretch yourself and to be creative. 69/ 6 GREAT LESSONS FROM COLIN POWELL Colin Powell, a former secretary of state, national security adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is no stranger to leadership. Powell, 73, is now working on projects at home and abroad, including helping to build a new educational system in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He shared his advice on leadership this week at the American Wind Energy Association Fall Symposium in Phoenix. Powell said that his idea of what it is to be a leader evolved as he moved through various positions in public service. Among his key points: Leaders exist to give followers what they need to get their job done. It is the followers who go to the battle and accomplish the tasks assigned. The most important part of leadership is instilling trust in those you command. If you have their trust, they will follow you anywhere. ―Every human endeavor has leaders and followers, and your job as a leader is to inspire,‖ he said. Leadership begins with goals. When the followers know what the goals are, everyone understands the importance of their own role for the common purpose. People want to know that you are serving a greater purpose than just your own. ―Increasingly, our people want to see leaders who are respected, leaders who are selfless,‖ Powell said. Express appreciation. Make sure that those under your command understand that you appreciate what they are doing, Powell said. While serving as secretary of state, Powell said, he let people know he appreciated their work through personal visits and thank-you cards. Solve problems. A leader also needs to recognize when someone is not performing well. It is a leader‘s job to identify the source of the problem, and fix it. ―Leadership is problem-solving, and you are expected as leaders to know what‘s going on throughout your organization,‖ he said. 70/ A LEADER NEVER DIES "Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character‖, Said profoundly by Albert Eisten. In the period before World War II, Einstein was so well-known in America that he would be stopped on the street by people wanting him to explain "that theory". Barbara Wolff, of The Hebrew University's Albert Einstein Archives, told the BBC that there are about 3,500 pages of private correspondence written between 1912 and 1955. It read ―Services and attitude matter more than just the look and colour of the cab.‖ The state transport departments‘ decision for a new livery for cabs. It does not matter whether one travels in a black or red or a yellow taxi. The authorities should work on the services and attitude of the taxi driver. Sometimes they are very rude to the customers .They do not ply short distances. WOW!!!!! News!!!! Attitude matters a lot and in my eyes it‘s the only thing that matters. Attitude to customers, vendors, team, stake holders and products have significant importance in business and organization. What is our attitude to change and managing change? What is our style and preference to the innovations and new policy and new systems? We love it or hate it!!!! Leaders love to know their mistakes in attitude and are ready to improve themselves at any stage of life (Remember, there is always room for self improvement). Change is always welcome but not superficies. The when traditions break and new system take place, even when resistance takes place. Leaders love to wear new changes. They love to go with new innovations, new research, new case studies, new experiments and new events. In fact, they have hunger for it. Leaders have to have attitude of watching current affairs and learn through those experiences and results. (It is good enough to learn from our experiences but you can learn from others experiences too.) Trust me; we can thus take ourselves to the main road of the life a road less travelled by us. We can have different experiences. Watch it. Observe it. Record it. Have fun out of it. Smile at it. It‘s all great. It takes a few minutes and that all is also life. Which is one of the best day of your life? In my eyes, when you do nothing for 5 minutes and meet yourself. We can review our business decisions, our interactions with colleagues, the quality of our work, the way we manage others, and our attention. The solution, though, is simple. All we have to do is nothing. But here's the trick: it's important to do it regularly, at least a few minutes a day. Your mind will, of course, wander. The goal isn't to stay focused on your breath the whole time. It's to I've only just begun to practice meditating regularly. What I've noticed is that my mind spends most of its time planning and worrying about the future or going over and over the past. How will I approach that conversation? What will I say to that employee? What time should I leave for the meeting? Or why did I say that? Did I respond appropriately? I should have acted differently when she asked me to help. Here's the most admirable experience: sitting and doing nothing has made me significantly more efficient. 20 minutes of meditation helps me avoid hours of time lost in unproductive thought, unconstructive comments, and unstrategic actions. My personal feeling is that it is the most productive time that helps us in driving us to our goals in life .In my eyes, it is a main issue of life. Leaders love mutual discovery and frequently travel within to have the fragrance of living. 76/ MISTAKE S FREE LEADERSHIP IS IMPOSSIBLE Anyone who has worked in an office for more than a day has made a mistake. While most people accept that slip-ups are unavoidable, no one likes to be responsible for them. The good news is that mistakes, even big ones, don't have to leave a permanent mark on your career. In fact, most contribute to organizational and personal learning; they are an essential part of experimentation and a prerequisite for innovation. So don't worry: if you've made a mistake at work, — and, again, who hasn't? — You can recover gracefully and use the experience to learn and grow. What the Experts Say According to Paul Schoemaker, the research director for the Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and co-author of the forthcoming Brilliant Mistakes, most people tend to overreact to their slip-ups. They "make asymmetric evaluation of gains and losses so that losses loom much larger than gains," he explains. As a result, they may be tempted to hide their mistakes, or even worse, continue down paths that have proven unproductive. This "sunk cost fallacy" can be dangerous and expensive. It is much better to accept mistakes, learn from them, and move on. "Look forward and base decisions on the future not the past," Schoemaker says. Christopher Gergen, the director of the Entrepreneurial Leadership Initiative at Duke University and co-author of Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary People Creating Extraordinary Lives agrees. The most useful thing you can do is "translate a mistake into a valuable moment of leadership," he says Here are a few guiding principles to help you turn your gaffes into gold: Fess up and acknowledge your mistake First and foremost, it's critical to be transparent, candid, and own up to the error. Don't try to blame others. Even if it was a group mistake, acknowledge your role in it. In cases where someone was hurt, issue an apology. However, don't apologize too much or be defensive. The key is to be action-oriented and focus on the future. How will your misstep be remedied? What will you do differently going forward? Once you've admitted your blunder, it may be appropriate to reframe it. Reframing is not making an excuse, but a genuine effort to help people see the mistake in a different light. Poor decisions or flawed processes can sometimes lead to mistakes, but that doesn't mean that every bad outcome is a mistake. Gergen says it's important to understand what was external and internal, what was in your control and what wasn't. Explaining in a non-defensive way what led to the mistake can help people better understand why it happened and how to avoid it in the future. Change your ways Mistakes play a critical role in leadership development. "The best kind of mistake is where the costs are low but the learning is high," Schoemaker says. If the error was a result of a poor decision, explain to your boss and other interested parties how you will avoid making the same or a similar misstep in the future. You have to respond quickly before people make judgments about your competence or expertise. "You need to get on top of it, get ahead of it, and deal with it," Gergen says. By demonstrating that you've changed as a result of your mistake, you reassure your superiors, peers, and direct reports that you can be trusted with equally important tasks or decisions in the future. "If you are going to pay the price for making the mistake, you need to get the learning," Schoemaker says. This is far easier in a learning culture than in a performance-focused culture, in which mistakes are often viewed more harshly. But regardless of the office environment, you need to figure out "how you can translate the mistake from a liability into an asset," Gergen says. Rely on your support network A strong support network can help you. "Our research shows that a healthy support network has three components: authentic trusting relationships, a diverse range of perspectives, and is reciprocal," Gergen says. Ask current or former colleagues or people outside the organization for their perspective on the mistake and what they believe you can do to recover. They are likely to have some useful advice about how to frame the error and restore your reputation. Get back out there It can be hard to rebuild confidence after slipping up. The key is to not let your errors make you afraid of experimentation. Once the mistake is behind you, focus on the future. If it made people question your expertise, put more data points out there to rebuild their trust. Remember that mistakes are not signs of weakness or ineptitude; recovering from them demonstrates resilience and perseverance. Both Gergen and Schoemaker emphasize that many employers look for people who made mistakes and came out ahead. Not all mistakes are created equal Mistakes vary in degree and type and some can be tougher to recover from than others. Schoemaker notes that group mistakes are often easier to get over because there is a diffusion of responsibility. Mistakes that involve breaking someone's trust can have lasting consequences and contrition is critical. If your mistake has caused someone to lose trust in you, approach the person and offer a sincere apology. Ask what you can do to restore his trust. But be patient — forgiveness may take a long time. Principles to Remember Do: * Accept responsibility for your role in the mistake. * Show that you've learned and will behave differently going forward. * Demonstrate that you can be trusted with equally important decisions in the future. Don't: * Be defensive or blame others. * Make mistakes that violate people's trust — these are the toughest to recover from. * Stop experimenting or hold back because of a misstep. Case Study #1: A supportive boss and colleagues speed up recovery As the associate director of the Science & Environmental Health Network (SEHN), one of Katie Silberman's responsibilities is to manage the nonprofit organization's grant applications. Last August, Katie created a calendar to track important funding dates; it included due dates for current grant reports as well as deadlines to reapply for future funding. In late January, Katie emailed the foundation officer at one of the organization's primary funders to check in about their re-application for 2010, thinking she was ahead of schedule. But the Foundation Officer replied that the 2010 deadline had just passed. Katie was shocked. She had a March deadline on her calendar — that was when the report for the 2009 grant was due and Katie expected they would talk about reapplying then. SEHN needed the Foundation grant to make it through the year. "To lose a funder in this environment isn't just bad, it's catastrophic," Katie says. It turns out that each January someone at SEHN calls the foundation officer to discuss that year's cycle. Katie wasn't aware of this informal meeting, but it was her responsibility to know each funder relationship in and out and to ensure that the organization was on top of each funding opportunity. Katie immediately called her boss, explained the mistake and offered ideas about how they could secure new funding sources to keep the organization afloat. Because she was forthright, she and the rest of the SEHN team were extremely supportive, offering to join a team call and do whatever they could to help. The foundation officer had let Katie know that there was a deadline in May for a separate round of funding and so SEHN has decided to submit an idea for a new project conceived at a recent retreat. Katie is optimistic they'll get it funded. While Katie felt like she had made an enormous mistake, she learned from it. Her calendar of deadlines now also includes "unwritten" ones and meetings in addition to the hard dates issued by funders. Case Study #2: Don't blame the economy, change your ways In the late 1990s, Christopher Gergen, one of our experts from above, co-founded Smarthinking.com, an online tutoring service for high school and college students. Christopher and his partner raised their first round of financing in the spring of 1999. The company grew quickly: by the beginning of 2000, it had 30 employees and was ready to launch. Then the dot com bubble burst. In a matter of weeks, the company's financing fell through. With six weeks of cash in the bank, Christopher and his co-founder were facing one of the biggest mistakes of their lives. Like many, they failed to foresee the bubble bursting and left the company and themselves exposed. Christopher had prior experience with companies facing hard times and had seen leaders hide behind closed doors. He and his co-founder took a different approach. They brought their whole staff together and explained exactly what needed to happen to save the company. Emphasizing that they couldn't pull it off alone, they were clear about what each person and function needed to do. They "limped" through that spring and summer, but were able to raise a $5 million round of funding in the fall and winter. While Christopher could easily blame the economy for what happened, he takes full responsibility for putting the company in an over-extended position. "While outside circumstances were not in our control, the ability to manage through it was," he says. Most importantly, he learned from the mistake and began to take a much more disciplined approach to cash flow. As a result of how he and his co-founder handled the aftermath, the company indeed survived and now has cohesive culture with practically no turnover. It just celebrated its eleventh anniversary and made it through the recent downturn with very few hiccups. 77/ LEADERSHIP IS NOT MARKETING FEELINGS BUT DISPLAYING ATTITUDE What is your attitude to your emotions? People around you are not interested in your feelings and emotions .Even 90 percentage people do not record your emotions and 10 percentages notice it but are not ready to help you. John Kador wrote an entire book on the topic of apologizing. It‘s called Effective Apology. Is there such a thing as reading a 300-page book on the topic of apology? You bet there is because I agree with Mr. Goldsmith. Very few, if any, things are more important. And as he said, it‘s the number one thing, arguably, factor for success, or the lack thereof. We never trained lessons of ‗apology‖ in business school. We trained for all other models and case studies but we never trained them for very powerful lesson of ‗apology‘. I strongly recommend to executives to learnt this lesson very powerfully. Who is perfect? No one is. Executives of managers who feel that they need to apologise in the matter then they must confess and convey it in right manner to the right authority. It is also to be performed with emotional attachment. It cannot be just showing off activity. I would also like to explain the example of the Bollywood star Salmankhan. He recently made objectionable statements on the T.V.India Today (Aaj Taak) and few hours later he apologized publicly. I think it is a most powerful tool in the compass of leader. And now I am going to take a walk down our corridor to the office of our Ethics Professor and apologise for calling her course ―pointless‖… See you later. 79/ WHO MAKES LEADERS SELFISH AND UNETHICAL While, a year or two ago, the dust clouds of the fallen giant investment banks were still settling, at many a place the discussion opened whether it was the CEO‘s business school education that caused him (invariably him…) to act in such a selfish, destructive, and unethical way. For example, Forbes debated the issue heavily under the title ―are B-schools to blame?‖ while at the Harvard Business Review a discussion raged under the highly similar header of ―are business schools to blame?‖ (As if they plagiarized each other… which I thought would add some juice to an ethics discussion…). Although there was the occasional stern defendant of the system, most treated the question as a rhetorical one (―yes, of course!‖) and vehemently declared denial itself to be almost as unethical as the destructive actions themselves. But what‘s the evidence; was there any presented? Do we actually know whether earning an MBA makes one behave more unethical and less socially responsive? No we don‘t. I was asked by a BBC World presenter, after giving a speech at the Rotterdam School of Management, whether it wasn‘t true that most of the corporate villains had MBAs? I had to admit I didn‘t know but, even if it were true – that most of the disgraced (and sometimes jailed) corporate villains were lauded with an MBA – what does it prove? Suppose 60 percent of the villains had MBAs; perhaps 70 percent of all major corporations in the world are headed by MBAs; this would actually imply that of the villains relatively fewer had an MBA than of all (non-villain) corporate big shots! It is irrelevant whether most villains had an MBA; the relevant question is whether getting the MBA made them more likely to be vile. And frankly, that we did not know. And I say ―did‖ because now we do – at least sort of. Professors Daniel Slater from Union University and Heather Dixon-Fowler from Appalachian State University decided to, rather than contribute yet another ‗informed opinion‘ and ‗point of view‘, actually test the conjecture. And, in retrospect, that wasn‘t so hard to do… Because they simply looked up the ―corporate environmental performance‖ score for 416 Standard & Poors 500 firms as put together by the company KLD Research and Analytics Inc. Nowadays there are quite a few corporate social responsibility rating agencies and systems around but KLD‘s is generally regarded a very good one, because they are fully independent and really track a variety of indicators, gathering the information from multiple sources, including extensive inspection of public records, surveys, and on-site facility inspections. Dan and Heather also looked up whether those companies had CEOs with or without an MBA, and used that to compute whether firms with MBAs at the helm performed any worse in terms of corporate environmental performance than firms with a CEO who did not go to B-school. And the answer was a resounding no. They checked whether this effect could be due to all sorts of confounding variables (like the CEO‘s functional background, age, education level, firm size, prior financial performance, type of industry, etc.) but, nope, really: the companies headed by MBAs were no more likely to be vile. As a matter of fact, they were less likely to be vile! Companies with CEOs with an MBA generally did better in terms of corporate environmental performance; it was the non-businesseducated chief executives that engaged in the bad stuff. I reckon that‘s quite a shocker to the average righteous blogger in leftish spheres: business school actually seems to make one more socially aware and responsive! And, on a final note, it didn‘t make any difference whether you were from Ivey League Harvard or had your MBA from the University of New South Nebraska State; programme rank had no influence on these blissful results. 80/ LEADERS ARE WALKING ON THE ROAD TO IMORATILITY Rafal Nadal win US open tennis title first time in the life and complete the title of grand slam. Offer to help in every situation that you possibly can. A good leader is someone who wants to make those around them successful and help them get there. Lending a helping hand will help you establish important relationships and trust amongst your peers, too. After all, gaining trust and establishing dependability are few of the most important factors for leadership. Show Initiative If an opportunity presents itself, take it! Stepping forward and showing you are proactive can be a great way to lead in your organization. Don‘t be afraid to offer suggestions and show your boss you can lead, rather than relying on others to do it for you. Take risks No one can be a leader without taking some risks. Sometimes they pan out and sometimes you have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off, but the risk is where you can show your leadership abilities and rise up. You may even want to consider taking the risk to get involved in something even if it doesn‘t fall within your immediate responsibilities (just make sure you aren‘t overstepping your boundaries or stepping on any toes). Listen Pay attention to what people are talking about. No really, listen. People want to be heard and if you can give this to them, even for a few moments, they will respect you more for it. Plus, listening to others may lead to all new ideas and opportunities for an organization. Often times, leaders follow their own views or experience by default, when sometimes it is staff recommendations that switch on the light bulbs and spark up improvements in organizations. Be fair In any position you hold, you can show the strength of your personal character and corporate moral values in how you act with others. Good leaders respect each and every individual and understand the contributions they make to the overall functioning of an organization. You can exemplify fairness by making sure your peers are treated fairly in your presence and in return, treating others with dignity and respect. Be a problem solver, not a problem identifier. While identifying a problem is an important first step (especially if no one else has the courage to speak up), it is less valuable to management than someone who is thinking of creative ways to solve the problem. A problem solver is an instant leader because doing so immediately shows positive results for company time, money, morale, etc. Be a leader by taking charge of problems, figuring out what it takes to get a job done, using your resources and resolving these issues. Prioritize A good way to lead is simply putting first things first. You can‘t be a leader of others if you don‘t understand what is most important to the company, your own boss and yourself. Setting your priorities is an important part to achieving successful results! Stay positive People want to work with and for people who are enthusiastic, confident and who are enjoyable to be around. You can lead simply by being positive because it in turn motivates those around you! Others may look to you as this kind of leader because your demeanor makes the days go by a little easier, makes the hard times seem like they‘re not so tough and just makes the overall office a more enjoyable place to be. In conclusion, it can be said that good leadership doesn‘t necessarily happen overnight but everyone can certainly do their part to exhibit positive examples of leadership in their everyday work. However you choose to exhibit leadership in your career, never forget that being a good leader comes down to a few basic things: it‘s about getting things done, inspiring and encouraging others and always being an positive example for those around you. Leaders are in the business of behavioural role modeling. Now we are in a different world and everyday new innovations take place and matter is referred by multi dimension. Leaders cannot afford to lose as winning is his attitude. In business houses and corporate career leaders need a personal board. What you need instead is a board of directors for your career, a group of people you consult regularly to get advice and feedback. There's no need to hold meetings or even inform each person of his or her status as a board member — but you do need to select the right people and stay in touch. Just like any good board, the people leader chooses should have different contributions to make to your thinking. You might want to include your boss or a colleague you admire — or both. You may, consider professionals, academics, or consultants with expertise in your specialty. The people on your board of directors should know more than you about something, be better than you are at something, or offer different points of view. Putting only buddies on your board won't help you grow and develop. Putting together your team should be easy. For example, Sunil is a law expert. I always go to him with lot of legal questions and ask him to direct me in the situation. Joseph I know is excellent in sharing and listening. When I need to share confidential matter and want to feel relief, I seat with him. Similarly, we need financial expert and taxation expert. I need a physical coach, meditation coach, spiritual master, finance expert, diet specialist, and expert beautician to present myself very properly to create high impact in the circle around me. I follow their advice and I learn from them. Most important rule is I have to follow expert‘s opinion. Most of the bosses suffer with the mindset that they are always right. Executive coaches are not for the meek. All coaches have one thing in common; it's that they are ruthlessly results-oriented. The goal of coaches is very clear ―good management ―. 86/ TIME YOU ENJOY LIVING IS NEVER A WASTED LIFE. Leaders are live all the time till the last breath. What kind of learning is taking place!!!!! ) I find great work done by John Paul Roller in this area. I would love to present it for the regular readers and lovers of leadership. Over the last few weeks, I have written posts on two fundamental questions about capitalism raised by the financial crisis: How much faith should we have in capitalism? How much faith should we have in capitalists? Today, I want to discuss how these questions can help to orient and shape the way we teach business ethics. First, however, a word about the academic anarchy that is business ethics. If you survey syllabi from MBA Programs across the country, you will soon discover that there is no agreement, broad or otherwise, on what passes for ―business ethics.‖ There are many reasons for this, but the most obvious may be that, as opposed to students at law and medical schools, MBAs do not have a canon of professional ethics they must learn and be bound by if they wish to practice business. There is currently an ongoing debate over the degree to which business resembles the legal and medical professions and whether an MBA credential ought to be as essential to the practice of management as an MD is to the practice of medicine. Should business schools move in this direction, I imagine we would see the creation of a formal canon of business ethics, one that MBAs would be responsible for learning and upholding lest they be disbarred. Whatever the merits of trying to remake the business profession in the image of the legal or medical profession, the argument over what ought to constitute business ethics can‘t wait for a verdict. Indeed, such proposals are given a sense of urgency by the unavoidable fact that, in the words of HBS Professor Rakesh Khurana, ―[w]e live in an era when many people do not have a high opinion of business leaders or business schools.‖ The era, of course, is defined by the continuing fallout from the financial crisis, and while making business management a more formal profession is one way of turning the tide of public opinion, that effort will only be successful if MBAs see business ethics as something more than the castor oil that business schools feel obliged to feed them. The questions I have proposed to help orient business ethics are large, contentious, and, most importantly, open-ended. They can and should be anchored in readings drawn from history, literature, philosophy, political economy, and the modern business experience, but they are posed with an eye toward provoking MBAs to answer the questions for themselves in light of their own experience and their long-term professional goals. The aim is not to train them to give the ―right‖ answers. Rather, it is to give them the tools so that they can determine their own answers, defend them intelligently, and recognize the merits of answers that other people give. This is to say; it is to teach MBAs how to engage, with intelligence and integrity, a real ethics debate about the role of business and the business professional in a free society. Some might object that this approach to business ethics doesn‘t provide the moral coherency of a single professional code. Let‘s be clear, it doesn‘t. However, if guided by one assumption and one aspiration, I think this approach supplies an academic forum for individual engagement and professional tailoring. The assumption is that acting with personal integrity as a business professional is a worthy goal. The aspiration is that, because business professionals are uniquely positioned to be leaders in society, they should embrace the responsibilities of strong moral leadership. Having taught business ethics for several years now, I have found that most business professionals share this aspiration and assumption long before they reach the classroom. What they lack — indeed, what they are looking for when they take a ―business ethics‖ class — are the tools for critical thinking that allow for moral self-assessment and a nuanced appreciation of the ethical dilemmas they face. These are precisely the tools that a business ethics course ought to provide. Its aim should be to take students from having strong views they cannot defend or explain to having considered views worthy of engagement and respect. Such a process will inevitably see them changing their opinions, but this should be a consequence of close readings, class discussion, and personal reflection — of students becoming business ethicist in their own right — not because they have been convinced to embrace a certain set of answers. ―Commerce is as a heaven, whose sun is trustworthiness and whose moon is truthfulness.‖ 88/ Don’t let your diploma be your Death Certificate A gem from the man behind the film, Koyaanisgati: To be is to fly the flag of one‘s own shadow. There is no limitation on that other than the real power of limit, and limits give us power. It‘s like isometrics. We don‘t have to be the models of what is offered to us by the left, by the right, by society. We have the ability to be unique, because originality is who each one of us is. That‘s our vocation. The real adventure of a leader is to be alive. Leaders are alive and living. They never die before their actual death. Seneca Narrated very profoundly ―You will not die because you are ill but you are not alive. The first step of leader is to be alive. A leader without aliveness is like body without breathing. A world will be a dangerous place for you if you are not alive. Isn‘t it.?Even experiencing being alive is only possible with the attitude of living. Be live. Be alive. That‘s all. Rest all will follow you. A professional completed his PH.D or Masters in technology then he thinks that everything is over. He had a lifelong certificate in the hand and now he has a license to move in the world .He has encashed that diploma or degree for a life time. Infact, his life starts after it. After acquiring diploma or degree people think that learning is stops, he had not to learn .We are in the world of unlearning, relearning an delearning. Leaders most of the time travel on new roads. Leader have to prove that they really have master and they deserve that master. Revisit the question what do I want? Keep revisiting. It‘s a question that can take some time to really answer. Leadership is keep visiting in the life and replans the life to prove that you really have master and you deserve master. In life span, you have to show that you are real master. Life battle does not stop at the door of university of intelligence but finished at the accomplishment level of life with the help of university intelligence. You will not die because you are ill but you are not alive. The first step of leader is to be alive. A leader without aliveness is like body without breathing. There will be never a better time to be the best than today. 89/ IMORTAL LEADERSHIP: SERVANT FIRST AND THEN A LEADER: Vision, humility and vulnerability are the hallmarks of leadership and demonstrated very well be Nelson Mandela in the South Africa. I am probably one of the few people who know him best outside politics, and to me he is just a human being who is simple and gentle. For Greeks and Romans it was sure sign of great leader. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees. The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers. She asserted profoundly that ―In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.‖ Mother Teresa‘s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.From Nobel Lectures, Peace 1971-1980, Editor-in-Charge Tore Frängsmyr, Editor Irwin Abrams, World Scientific Publishing Co., Singapore, 1997. Leadership is constant moving, flexible, transparent, useful to people, going to the last person and avoiding stagnancy. 93/ Krishna: CEO leadership KRISHNA AS A CEO OF THE WORLD ORGANIZATION In current corporate world, Krishna‘s leadership is a most fascinating and useful leadership. He had demonstrated leadership of very high quality, which had made him example leader, that‘s why he is followed by millions of disciple till today, in his absence. SETTING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE: In childhood, he used to play more with young girls, in India; they all were called GOPIS. As the village Gokul and Mathura are on the banks of the river, most of the girls used to swim in river Jamuna. They kept their clothes on the banks of the river. Krishna was always found of playing different games with his friends near river bank. He used to secretly lift up their clothes and hid them on tree tops. Krishna did not hand over clothes until Gopis pleaded to him. Finally, he used to hand over those clothes on his terms and conditions. He wanted to deliver a message to all the young girls that be good with the culture of your family and nation. Do not exceed limits in public places, your behavior in public counts. He acted opposite in gambling with the Pandavas. The Pandavas had lost their wife Draupadi to Kauravas. They were in a very awkward position, as the Kauravas after winning Draupadi, decided to remove her clothes in the court assembly. Draupadi was in desperate position as nobody came to her rescue. Then, she prayed to Lord Krishna wholeheartedly. By hearing his devotee‘s heart breaking pleads, Krishna appeared virtually and supported her. Dushashan, the second of Kauravas, was pulling away clothes from Draupadi but Krishna virtually supplied the bales of clothes continuously such that Dushashan got tired and fell on the ground. Thus, in this way, Krishna saved the character of a woman. He always showed a model character by his behaviour. At one instance, you will find Krishna pulling away clothes and on the other place you see, he provided clothes and saved the character of a woman. This displays his dual character of love and protection. Relationship Management: Relationship management is very effectively demonstrated by Krishna. His friend, Sudama belonged to a very poor family. Both studied together in Gurukul during childhood. After their studies, they parted and led their own lives, Krishna as a King of Dwarika and Sudama as a poor Brahmin. After few years, Sudama decided to see his friend. Sudama went to see him in the city Dwarika where Krishna resided and ruled as a king. When he got the message of Sudama‘s has arrival, he got up and ran barefooted to welcome him from the corridor. Sudama was very poor and so could not carry anything as gift to his friend but Krishna insisted for Pauva (flaked rice), which he brought and was hesitant to give by seeing the riches of Krishna. They used to share this Pauva during school days. Both lived together and shared together whatever they used to get during school days. Krishna became a king but never demonstrated Ego, Status, Position and Power and importance of material world in the relationship. He demonstrated real meaning of friendship. What mattered was what his friend was & not what he had. He had shown excellent relationship management. Decision Making: Karna was a strong competitor and fighter. He was almost divine. He was blessed by God Surya. Krishna knew all this. So, it was very difficult for him to kill Karna in war. In the war, Karna‘s Rath (chariot) wheel was stuck in mud. His Rath was not in a position to move. Karna had to come down from his Rath to pull out the wheels from mud. As Karna was found busy in this activity, Krishna said to Arjun, ―Kill him.‖ Arjun said, ―No I Cannot.‖ But Krishna pushed and ordered him kill him, as everything was fair in war. Winning is everything. Strategy Planner: He lived with a vision and could see the future. He took decisions and planned out new working methodology. Gandhari was the mother of Duryodhana. Gandhari had blind folded her eyes as she had taken a vow. In Mahabharata when Duryodhana was about to lose, Gandhari decided to bless her son Duryodhana by removing the fold from her eyes as she was a pious lady. She asked her son to be present at the first phase of the day without any clothes so that she could see him and bless him when she removes the fold from her eyes. She wanted to bless her son with the divine power, which she had got due to her vow. Thus, she called her son without clothes. Duryodhana left to see his mother. Krishna came to know about this and as he was a visionary; he thought that if Duryodhana, being naked, went to his mother he would be blessed with divine power and it would be difficult to defeat him in war. Hence, Krishna came to Duryodhana and said, ―You are going naked in front of your mother. She is a lady and will you go naked in front of her. It will look so bad and shameful.‖ Duryodhana agreed with Krishna and went to see his mother by putting some leaves around his waist. When Gandhari found him covered, she said that that part of his body, which was covered with leaves, was now unprotected. She said, ―My full sight on your complete body was essential for divine blessings but you came with covered.‖ Later in the war Krishna and his team defeated Duryodhana by attacking him on the same covered part and won. Krishna could see what would happen. Leaders are visionaries. According to the situation, they design a strategy, move forward, and win. They defeat competitors. Before, the final war between Kauravas and Pandavas, Krishna motivated Arjuna to fight out, as he was a number one fighter of the Pandava team. Arjuna became weak and sentimental. Krishna showed him his strength and his potentiality, and his hidden energy. Krishna boosted his actual power, capacity and capability. Strength is life and weakness is death. Unleashing your potentiality and performing is the true spirit. Control over EQ AND SQ: Krishna was born to Devki. But, he was brought up and grown under the motherhood of Yashoda. He never forgot her in his life and he always showed loyalty and commitment, and respect for his mother, Yashoda. Leaders are always loyal to people and organization. Krishna was playing with his friends on the banks of river Jamuna. While playing with a ball, it went deep into a river. Krishna was forced to bring out the ball from the river. In fact, in the river, a large cobra was lived, which could kill anybody with its poison. Krishna jumped into the river and fought with the cobra, as cobra had five heads……Krishna took control over it through riding on its five heads and he brought the ball out of the river. Leaders have control over their five senses. Krishna demonstrated control of senses. Your emotions and sentiments drive you other ways from the main goal. Leaders always have total control over their senses. Situational Leadership: While fighting with King Jarasangh, Krishna came to know that the complete village was covered by the enemies and it was very difficult to fight with less weapons and less team members. He decided to quit from the village overnight. He had not committed fight and war with enemies. Next day, it was found that Krishna had run away, with his team mates. He was declared RANCHOD.‖ After few years, he asked Arjuna to fight out. He insisted Arjuna to fight against Duryodhana and his soldiers at any cost for his rights and justice. Arjuna almost lost the battle before, but Krishna proceeded and made up Arjuna‘s mind and pushed him mentally and physically to fight against his gurus and senior family members. State of Mind and Inside Clarity: During his childhood, one day, he has to cross river Jamuna along with his friends. He found that the river was over flowing but it was also necessary to cross the river. He prayed to the river saying, ―If you find that I have a strong character and I follow Brahamacharya by mind, heart and body. Please allow a passage to cross the river to reach the other side. River Jamuna allowed him to cross the river. Later on, in his youth age, he got married to 1600 women and was called husband of 1600 queens. He married those women to save their lives. He had honoured those ladies. He gave them the title of being his weeded wives. Tolerance: Shishupal had insulted the Pandavas and Krishna a number of times, but he did not utter a word, even though he requested Shishupal for understanding the time and grant the appeal. Shishupal abused him and Pandavas repeatedly up to 99 times. After which he showed him his strength and power. Leaders have enough amounts of tolerance and capacity for handling pressure. They can keep themselves cool up to the last moment. Professionals have to keep their mind calm and cool and inside fire to lead themselves...as there is a goal and deadline. To meet challenges under high pressure you have to develop tolerance in the team. Corporate Social Responsibility: One king …….had 1600 women kept in his palace. As he was the king, no one could raise a voice against him …during his rule. Krishna led against anti culture and stood in favour of woman rights. He fought against him publicly and defeated him. He freed all the 1600 women…But the women asked him… ―Now who will accept us as their wives or daughters…as we have stayed with that person for a long time who will trust us.‖…Krishna said, ―Do not worry…today onwards I declare myself as your husband. Live with pride in society.‖ Standing for social responsibility, demonstrating mental standards and height of the character, he was a perfect leader. He was the husband of 1600 women and on the other side he followed the highest level of character. Personal Social Responsibility: He knew he was going to die. How could he help community at large for the better life? He prescribed the life book called ―THE GEETA‖. The book is well known for a life management just in 17 chapters and mantras. People can read in his absence and find out the ideal ways of leaving a mark to achieve a mission in life. Visionary Leadership: He almost demonstrated visionary leadership. He saw and watched the actions of his competitors and enemies and then designed his course of actions. He also demonstrated how one could win over his competitors by his strategies and communication. Excellent Negotiator His ability to communicate and negotiate was par excellence. He communicated to seniors ( Drona, Dhuthrastra and Bhisma) and he dealt with Kansa, Jarasangh, Shishupal. He always tried his level best to stand in favour of fairness, integrity and dharma (Religious by action). But, when anyone crossed the limits, he sized them and won over in the deal. Finally, result was counted. Krishna was an individual who had a winning habit. Different Strokes – Different Folks He led from the front and walk his talk. He handled different people with different styles. When he was on a social front, he was different. When he was at war, he was different. When he was in family relationship, his qualities were different. He handled worst people (Kansa, Shishupal, Duryodhan) very rudely and ruthlessly. When he was with his friend Sudama, you would find him completely different and when you found him with Radha (his love), he was different. Team Leader Krishna knew that the dream of life is equal to dream of a team. He built up, developed, and operated those teams very well. He was also aware of his potentials and team potential. He was also able to distinguish individual leadership and team leadership. Every night during the Mahabharata war he sat with his team and decided the course of action looking to the strength of the individuals, simultaneously keeping in mind … the importance of strategy. He stood in the favour of Truth, Trust, Integrity, Corporate Social responsibility and Religion. He lost his own team players, friends, and he killed by a common Shikari near Prabhas Patan. A man, who had won over thousands in the life, was finally, lost to a common person. He was highly worried before the end of his life…as his own friends and disciples were free, were not following code of conduct, and became physically and monetarily successful people, which he had always denied in the life. He was found unhappy at the end of the life by his own people, CEOs are also found frustrated and upset. They create an empire or house, finally, at the end of the career, they find it loosing originality, identity and values, to which they devote their entire lives. Even at such stage they seem very normal and move across the globe in ease. 98/ COMMUNICATE IN 140 CHARACTERS As Mr. Williams talked with the interviewer about building a 21st-century business, keeping to twitter‘s foundational principle and fostering corporate experimentation. It is no small irony, of course, that a man so ill at ease on the big stage is a pivotal force in a communications revolution, one that has made it easier for people to chat, disseminate information and mobilize locally and globally with almost anyone who has a cell phone or an Internet connection. And Twitter has become one of the rare but fabled Web companies with a growth rate that resembles the shape of a hockey stick. It has 175 million registered users, up from 503,000 three years ago and 58 million just last year. It is adding about 370,000 new users a day. TWITTER was born in 2006 as a side project. People could follow others without being followed back, and all posts were public by default — and limited to 140 characters so they could fit inside cell phone text messages. Because of that, Twitter is on the cusp of becoming the next big, independent Internet Company or the next start-up to be swallowed whole by a giant like Google or, possibly, the next start-up to run out of steam. ―The thing I‘ve learned that‘s much different than any other time in my life is I have a team that is really, really great,‖ says Mr. Williams, 38. ―I‘ve been studying this stuff for a really long time, and I‘ve screwed up in many, many, many ways in terms of managing people and product decisions and business, so I feel fairly confident at this point that it could scale pretty well.‖ The founders likened Twitter to ice cream: not that useful, but ―a fun thing for family and friends when they are not in the same place,‖ Mr. Williams says. In 2009, Twitter ballooned to 71.3 million registered users from 5 million. The Web site crashed often, and the ―fail whale‖ — an image of a whale that appears on the site whenever Twitter falters — became the butt of jokes. Twitter was fielding dozens of calls a week from big companies, celebrities and politicians. Among the callers were CNN, ―The Oprah Winfrey Show‖ and the State Department, which asked Twitter to delay maintenance so that Iranians protesting an election in 2009 could continue using the service. What the company needed was simple: people to do all the work. Yet it moved painfully slowly in hiring, with just 110 employees by the end of 2009, even though it had raised $150 million in venture capital by then. After a string of high-profile successions in recent years that have been anything but smooth–first Bank of America, then HP and now, potentially, AIG (its fifth CEO in five years has cancer and all the board has in place to replace him, if needed, is an interim director?)–the oracle of Omaha is working his magic on management, too. The sage investor has named Todd Combs, a manager at a small hedge fund in Connecticut, to succeed him. I know very little about Combs, the 39-year-old The Wall Street Journal calls a ―surprise appointment.‖ That‘s probably because Combs currently manages just $400 million in assets; Berkshire Hathaway‘s investment portfolio is $100 billion. Combs also has experience as a Florida bank regulator and working in the pricing department of the insurer Progressive, but he‘s likely been picked for his style as much as his background. Chuck Davis, the chief executive of a private-equity firm that helped Combs start his fund, told the Journal that Combs ―reads 500 pages a week and does his own deep-dive research,‖ a quality the thorough Buffett is sure to respect. But what Warren got right isn‘t necessarily the pick. It‘s the approach. For one, he‘s actually naming someone before he gets too old or too infirm to carry out the job. That may seem obvious, but so many companies don‘t get the simplest of all succession rules down. All too often, succession planning is something that happens after lightning strikes–be it performance woes, an embarrassing boardroom scandal or an unexpected illness or death. Second, he‘s bringing Combs on early, starting him small and letting him grow into the role. Buffett told the Journal that Combs will not ―take over the whole investment function as long as I‘m around‖ and will stick with a size he ―feels comfortable with‖ and ―scale up until he has a chance to get fully invested‖ in the coming months. No matter how much a CEO-in-training has spent time in second-in-command jobs, taking on the entire role at one time is overwhelming. That‘s particularly true when the successor is an outsider, who must not only learn the job but get to know the company‘s customers, shareholders and culture. Finally, and more important, he isn‘t trying to force someone else to follow in his impossible-toreplace shoes. No one could ever be Warren Buffett, no matter how hard they try. Instead, he is revamping the role, splitting his CEO and chief investment officer responsibilities into two jobs. Combs is a candidate for the latter gig, while the former is widely expected to be filled by David Sokol, an Omaha native who is chairman of MidAmerican Energy Holdings and CEO of NetJets, both units of Berkshire. Most successors struggle when trying to follow the footsteps of iconic chief executives or wellknown entrepreneurs.
