1974
Carlinville Schools will open
with a half-day session for all
students on Monday. For students riding buses, the timeframe for riding buses will remain the same with the buses
running the same routes. Classes
will start at the schools at 8:30
a.m. The cafeteria will not be
in operation on Monday since
students will be dismissed from
school early enough to be home
for lunch. Buses will leave the
elementary school at 11:25 a.m.
and the junior-senior high school
at 11:35 a.m.
Effective Sept. 1, county employees will have fatter paychecks as provided in a resolution
adopted by the Macoupin County Board Tuesday afternoon. The
salary increases were recommended by the Fees and Salary
committee of the board. Office
deputies at the courthouse, office
clerks, jailers, janitors, bailiffs,
chief deputy sheriff, sergeant
deputy sheriff, deputy sheriffs,
assistant chief county highway
engineer, highway workers and
the county nursing home advisor
will all receive pay increases of
$50 per month.
A variety of doll dresses will
be on display and available for
purchase at St. Mary’s lawn
party Sunday evening from 4
to 5 o’clock. In case of rain, the
party will be held in the church
hall. The doll dresses are in various sizes to fit cuddle dolls and
made from all types of new materials. One antique costume is
adorned with tucks and tatting.
All dresses, regardless of material or size, will sell for $1 each.
They may also be reserved for
Christmas gifts. Also at the party will be sandwiches, ice cream
and cake, children’s games and
a flea market. There will be entertainment by the Carlinville
High School band as well.
Becky Boente, Lesa Bettis, Beth Hamel, Jan Heinz and
Denise Rathke, varsity cheerleaders from Carlinville High
School, recently attended cheerleading camp at the University
of Illinois where they received
a third-place ribbon during final
competition. The girls look forward to great football and basketball seasons and welcome the
support of everyone.
One week prior to the Shipman
Picnic, 32 members of the Southwestern FFA chapter spent one
full day working in the Kitchen
Klatter Band Park. Members
of the chapter built new picnic
tables, repaired old tables, constructed a walk bridge, wired the
pavilion and painted the cook
house pavilion and tables. This
was the beginning of the Chapter’s Building Our American
Community program, which emphasizes Vo Ag youth and community service activities.
Three Carlinville men recently retired from employment
with Illinois Gulf Central Railroad, formerly the GM&O, and
were honored at a dinner Friday
evening at the VFW hall. They
are Ray Jones with 34 years of
service, Otto Glass with 33 and
Harry Rice with 47. Russell
Jones, general section foreman,
presented the men with gifts.
Bellm Construction advertised
cabin sites at Lake Catatoga with
a low down payment at a low interest rate. All lots are heavily
wooded and have lake frontage.
Display cabins are open with a
salesman on duty. “Let the easy
life begin now. You’ll never get
a better buy.”
Approximately 5,369 new
telephone directories were delivered to customers in Carlinville last week according to
Service Manager Gerry Berg.
There were 10,742 copies of
this directory delivered to the
four communities listed in the
directories.
My Sister’s Closet held a
Grand Opening on Friday, featuring a new line of infant and
children’s wear, sizes new
born to 14. Also featured were
a neatly priced selection of ladies White Stag sportswear and
a complete line of fabrics and
notions. Double Eagle Stamps
were awarded and customers
were invited to come in and register for door prizes.
Steve Rushton of Carlinville,
who will be a senior at Quincy
College, was awarded first place
in advance layouts in the fourth
National Yearbook Forum under
auspices of the American Yearbook Company. Rushton was
editor of the yearbook at Carlinville High School.
Wednesday thru Tuesday’s
movie at the Marvel Theatre
featured The Three Musketeers.
The Diane Drive-In showed
Candy Stripe Nurses and Naked
Countess.

1994
Staunton High School will open as
planned despite a fire that destroyed
the school cafeteria Sunday, August
7. According to Staunton School Superintendent Vic Buehler, the major
problem will be how to feed the students until a new cafeteria, now under
construction, is completed by early
December or as early as November.
In addition to the cafeteria being destroyed, one other classroom in the
building that housed the cafeteria was
damaged by water and smoke in the
blaze that was discovered at about 5
a.m. Sunday.
The Staunton Fire Department responded, along with the departments
from 12 surrounding communities, to
fight the blaze. Preliminary investigations by the state fire marshal’s office
have found that an electrical malfunction, possibly in a fluorescent fixture,
was responsible for starting the fire.
Kim and Mike Viano, owners of
First to the Finish, presented Loveless Park Committee representative
Dr. Mark Wade with a $1,000 donation to be used for improvements to
Loveless Park. Dr. Wade said that the
money would be going into park improvements and toward work on the
track facilities. M. Viano said, “We
just wanted to give something to the
community.”
A committee of about 20 local veterans is making preliminary plans in
hopes of constructing a new memorial
which would honor Macoupin County
veterans who have participated in any

war. The proposed memorial would
be built on the southwest corner of the
Macoupin County Courthouse lawn.
Plans drawn up for the site include the
monument itself, along with a patio
and Historical Memorial Walk. The
monument, to be constructed of black
and white granite, will be composed
of three parts, with a total measurement of 35 feet wide by 7 feet high.
The center stone will contain the insignias of the Army, Navy, Marine
Corps and Air Force, and on the top
an eagle will be perched.
“Even though there are other memorials in different areas surrounding
Carlinville, I think that we’ve seen
enough interest to start a county memorial,” said Marty Rogers, a World
War II Marine veteran. “For instance,
there is a memorial for the soldiers
participating in the American Revolution on the other side of the Courthouse, but I think it is important to
remember soldiers in Vietnam, Korea
and other wars, too.”
Harold and Grace Huyear of Carlinville recently purchased a new
1995 Olds 98. The car is the 50th new
Oldsmobile purchased by the couple
from Bates Motor Company in Carlinville. The Huyears purchased their
first new Olds from Webb Bates in
1950 for $2,300. Harold Huyear said
he wished he could buy them for that
same price today. Rick Geninatti,
grandson of Webb Bates and owner
of Bates Motor Company and Oldsmobile, thanked the couple for their
many years of business. As Geninatti
held the door for Grace Huyear, he
told Harold he hoped he could buy 50
more. Huyear replied, “Oh, no!”

own car for several years, and the Huyears purchased two cars in ’75, ’84
and ’92. She said she liked the color
of their new Olds—Adriatic Blue.

Two Carlinville fast food restaurants, Hardee’s and McDonald’s, recently made improvements that area
children will greatly enjoy. Hardee’s
has added an outdoor playground
area on the east side of the restaurant,
while McDonald’s has made some
noticeable improvements to its existing playground.

King. Cinema II presented Angels in
