B ARN QUILTS OF LEROY BEGAN AS A BICENTENNIAL project for the Town on LeRoy, under the auspices of the LeRoy Historical Society. The first quilt, “JELL-O Jigglers” was painted in July 2011 at the annual Oatka Festival. The goal was to have 24 quilts painted and erected in time for LeRoy’s Bicentennial event on June 8, 2012. In less than 10 months over 70 barn quilts were near completion. Most of the squares were purchased through the LeRoy Historical Society and they helped raise money for the Bicentennial event. The quilts have come to represent the pride shared by the people of LeRoy, a town with a rich heritage and a vision for the future that will guarantee quality of life for generations to come. L Many of the quilts are on barns, but some residents have applied their creativity to the sides of sheds, garages and outbuildings. There are also patterns inside local restaurants, Wolcott Street School (painted by second grade students), the Village Green Nursing Home and The Greens Senior Living Facility. L The Barn Quilt project will continue after 2012 and the Town of LeRoy welcomes you to return again and again to explore more scenic barn quilts. Each quilt has a story to tell and these stories can be found online at www.leroybarnquilt.org. ABOUT THE TRAILS Four scenic driving tours are featured on the maps. L Each tour route is highlighted in a different color. L The name, address and size (in feet) of each quilt is listed and the location of each quilt is plotted on the map. L Some locations have multiple quilts. L Some quilts face the opposite direction (as noted) depending on the direction of travel. L Quilts that are part of the 2012 LeRoy Bicentennial Project are indicated by a © symbol. Enjoy the barn quilt tours all year round and come back next year to discover new quilts. Please remember to check for traffic as you slow down or stop to view a quilt. LeRoy’s Bicentennial Quilt is a patriotic rendition of nine of the barn quilts in the Town of LeRoy. Eventually LeRoy became known for agricultural implements, patent medicines, porcelain electrical insulators, processed malt, salt, and of course Jell-O. LeRoy was the home of Calvin Keeney, who developed the stringless snap bean. The unique history of LeRoy has been interpreted through the designs of many of the barn quilts. g Tilted Triangles 90 E. With the encouragement and financial support of the Historical Society, the first barn quilt, “Jell-O Jigglers” was painted during the annual Oatka Festival in July 2011. The plan was to paint and install 20 to 30 barn quilts in the next twelve months, culminating in the Town’s Bicentennial celebration on June 8, 2012. The project was so popular, that in less than a year, over 75 quilts were completed. By September 2012, the number of quilts exceeded 100. In October 2012, the LeRoy Historical Society received the prestigious “Community Art Award” from the Genesee-Orleans Arts Council for the LeRoy Bicentennial Barn Quilt Project. In 2013 the number of quilts exceed 100.
