The good news...
I recently took my
GT6 on a 1000
mile road trip to
San Francisco to
attend a MacWorld
Expo, and then
further north to
visit my friend
Gary to sample
the wines of the
Sonoma Valley.
The car ran fine
(although the
transmission was
making a lot of
noise). It was great
fun blasting up
the Coast Highway through San Simeon,
Big Sur, Carmel & Monterey. Inevitably, I
would find myself behind a blue-hair, who
was puttering along enjoying the scenery.
When they saw me in their rear view
mirror, they would look for the first place
to pull over and wave me by.
The bad news... A few days after I
returned home, I took the GT back to the
shop to have the paint wet sanded and
polished. I told them that there was no
rush, so they kept it for over a week. It
was raining when I picked up the car, so
I didn't do a close inspection of the paint.
As I was driving home, it seemed to me
that the transmission was howling louder
than normal. I reasoned that maybe it's
because I hadn't driven it for awhile, and
I'd forgotten how loud it was. As I was
pulling up to an intersection, I down-shifted
to 3rd gear. Strange, 3rd gear was there a
minute ago. Well, let's try 2nd... GRIND!
Eew, that was an ugly sound! I rolled to
a stop. Then I put the car in 1st gear and
lifted the clutch. Ahh, that's better, nice and
smooth. Now let's try 2nd... GRIND!! How
about 3rd? It took a bit of pushing (and a
few well placed expletives) but the shifter
finally fell into place. I managed to limp
the car home, parked it in the garage and
turned out the lights.
The next morning, I went into the garage
to inspect the finish on the paint. Most
of the finish was nice and shiny, and the
color mismatch on the bonnet was fixed.
But what's this? There are several places
that look like someone took one of those
green kitchen scrubbing pads and scuffed
up the paint. I thought it might be a film
left by the polishing compound, but sadly,
that wasn't the case. I called the paint
shop to let him know that the job was still
unsatisfactory. He apologized and wanted
me to bring the car back in. So, I told
him my sad tale about the transmission.
Then he offered to bring the equipment
he'll need to my garage next Saturday,
and stay until I'm happy. I couldn't argue
with that.
But, in the meantime, I'm looking at a
transmission rebuild. That's certainly
an expense that I wasn't planning on. I
wonder if I will ever get this car finished.

I Saw this and thought of you... Jeff Yeary
just a nightmare to live through. The living spaces are decorated now and back in
order and I have started the great Garage clean out of 2007. Lot (but not enough)
throwing away. New shelves and a reworked bench is next. Right now I don't
remember where I put anything! It is kind of funny when you live with a mess and
everything is in "piles", you know that the drill is in one pile and the clamps and the
saw are in the other. I can't seem to ever find my voltmeter! Everything is neat now,
but I can't find it! It will be great when I can put my mitts on stuff again. When I
am done my wife's car and the Triumph will park on one side front to back and the
other side will be "Shop"
Hope to see you all soon at Patys!

SCTOA's new Web Site!
Jim - I just had a chance to look at all the pages of your new club website.
I am really impressed! I'd like to offer my personal thanks for the all the effort
you put forward in the club's behalf. Also, I like the idea of putting past issues
of the newsletter on line (and being in color adds class). It is surely a way for
a casual browser to get a flavor of what the club is up to. Would it make any
sense to mention the news letters on the into page of the website?
Dick Hansen
Hi Jeff.
Hi Dick.
As you well know, I'm always looking for newsletter fodder.
You're right, this cartoon does look like a Spitfire! So, how's
things with you? Are your cars still running? Keep in touch.
– Jim
Glad you like the web site. Apple, Inc. software has made it really
easy to make web sites without having to know anything about
making web sites. There's no code to learn or file preparation.
Just copy & paste, drag & drop. Viola! Instant web pages.
Jim – My cars are running just fine. The Mini has a new engine but I don't have any
time to work out the rest of the bugs. I bought a 115hp 1380cc engine and it goes
from zero to too fast in about 6 seconds. Imagine a go kart with an over powered
four cylinder. The tires were worn out in no time. It still needs lots of work - interior
mostly, and paint. The worst thing is that my son decided it needed to have body
work so he spun-out one rainy night and used a pole like the cable on a carrier
deck. The Mini's left butt cheek has a big dent where the tail light used to be. The
TR4 is running fine, no problems there. We just completed a major house remodel
- new master bath, new laundry, redone family room, new flooring every where and
... drumroll ... 140 sq ft more for My Garage. Everything came out real nice, it's

Smells like a TR3
Hi Jim, and all the club members,
First of all, Jim, let me congratulate you on the great looking new web site.
It really is impressive.
I thought I would give you a little update from Texas. Contrary to popular
myth, Texas is not the wild west open frontier where cowboys carrying
concealed weapons shoot it out over disagreements at four way stops.
Houston, at least, is a civilized upscale city with many charming areas, lots of
open space and gracious, hospitable citizens. We've been made to feel very
welcome here. We're enjoying settling into our new home and spending time
with our family and grandson. And we just learned another one is on the way
in August! Looks like we're really tied to Houston now.
My Spitfire has been quite sick this winter and is just now feeling better.
Somewhere along the way a lot of water got into the gas! I don't know if I
picked up a bad load of gas or if it just sat out in too many Texas downpours
before we had a garage to put it in. It was covered but the rains were pretty
fierce. At any rate, before knowing the real problem, I changed plugs, points,
rotor, condenser, spark plugs, etc but to no avail. (I'm sure it didn't hurt to
change everything anyway.) Then I turned to the local Triumph club, Texas
Triumph Register, for help and found it in the person of a very knowledgeable
member, Russ Seto, who diligently analysized the problem and discovered the
water lots and lots of it. If cars could run on water I would have been fine.
Well, Russ disassembled and cleaned the carbs, blew out the fuel lines and
we even drained, removed and dried out the gas tank. All of this work, along
with replacing fuel filters, solved the problem and it fired up and ran just like
the old days. What a great resource a local Triumph club is!
I'm enclosing a picture of a very unique Christmas gift my wife gave me. We
first saw this at the Triumph club Christmas gift exchange and then she found
it on E-Bay and bought one for me.
It is an Avon after shave bottle from 1956 in the shape of a TR3. On the
box is a brief description of the TR3 history concluding with inspired by the
engineering savvy that made the TR3 such a huge success. An Avon designer
created this unique decanter.

Well, I continue to
enjoy the newsletter
and go on many drives
with all of you in my
mind. Now that my
car is running again I
look forward to doing
the same with the
Houston club. They keep saying I don't need a TR to go on their drives but I
haven't found a pickup truck yet with a gun rack in the back! (Just kidding)

As my wheel rolls... I went to the CCBCC wine tour last month in Pismo
Beach, and had a great time, until on the way home, a crane fell on the 405
101 interchange and closed the north 405 for 4 to 5 hours. I was trapped on
the up-hill side of Sepulveda pass, and could not exit the fwy. My TR6 caught
hell. Corine, Alena, and friend along with our new puppy. Other So-Cal folks
were present at the wine tour as well. Paulette, Bob Muzio, The Jaspers,
Lamberts and others. We stopped in Solvang for breakfast, and ran into Alan
Frisbie. He and others were walking through the village and spotted my car.
My daughter thinks my car is my middle aged attention whore, to some extent
she is right.
The fellows (Al, Tyler, Eddy) and I took a day trip recently stopped at Dave
and Sue Wellwoods shop in Ventura, then on to Moss Motors, were we
stumbled onto Peter for an afternoon of TR shopping. We did lunch then
came home.
Kudo's to Dick and Johanne Hansen for hosting the
Valentines Day brunch. It was attented. The highlight
of my afternoon was seeing my old colligate track
coach from Long Beach State that is now mens and
womens director of track and field at U.S.C.
As this year takes off with all of the events planned,
does anyone consider a buget between car expense
and event expense? At the end of the year a car
hobby becomes pricey. I find myself working harder
to support my madness. My car is back in the shop.
I go to most events so I can have something to write
about, it's stressful enjoyment.

you in touch. See you all down the road. – Allen Cox

Hey You South Bay Guys!
Here is an event for you and in your own backyard.
Some of you may be aware of it; but for those of you
who are not, check this out.
There is a car group that meets every Saturday
morning in Torrance at the corner of 190th Street
and Anza Avenue. There is a Starbucks there and the
group known as the "Caffeine Cruisers." It begins at
about 7:AM and lasts until about 9:00 AM the cars
range from hot rods to classics to a growing handful
of British Sports Cars. It is an informal group with no
dues or membership involved. It is worth checking
out. They do have a website with pics of the regulars.
http://www.caffeinecruisers.com/coolcargallery/
caffeinecruisercars.html
I went this last Saturday to check it out and what a
blast!!! I got there are at 6:45 AM in order to be able
to park with the other TRs. A lot of them get there at
6 AM, now is that hard core of
what. I meet a lot of nice people
and even got my picture taken with
my TR4 to put on their website.
Howie Margolies and his lovely
wife, Colette, introduced to me all
the people and showed me around.
They are there most every Saturday
with his newly painted, black TR3
or TR6. Paul Willoughby was there
too. He is a regular at this event
with his blue TR3. I have included
some pictures that Howie took of
the cars and us.
I like that it is informal because my
car was not show quality clean, just
drivable clean. They said you have
to pop the hood so everyone can
see what you got. Ouch, my engine
is kind of dirty – hey I drive the car
every day. But they didn’t care and I’m learning to lighten up.
Also speaking of the South Bay, we are working on forming a new Breakfast Group to be meeting
in Torrance sometime soon. Stay tuned to further announcements about where and when.

Our very own Randall Young is hosting "Drips and Sparks." He has owned a succession of TR3s
since 1974, and has driven them daily for roughly 250,000 miles. He has done much of his own
mechanical and electrical work in that time.
Although Randall specializes in TR3s, he is well connected in the Triumph community, so he'll be
able to research the questions he may not know the answer to off-hand.

1974 Triumph TR6 Driveability Problem
Between 1200-1400 RPM
We have a 1974 Triumph TR6 that seems
to run poorly at 1200-1400 rpm. It idles
okay and drives okay but right about this
rpm it waivers or flutters a bit. In order
to test or eliminate possible causes,
while the symptom is present, the EGR
has been disconnected and/or blocked
off, the fuel has been restricted, the air
intake has been momentarily restricted,
the timing retard has been eliminated,
etc. all with no effect- either long term
or momentary. It does run a little better
with the timing advanced. We have
checked the engine for vacuum leaks and
find none. If we take the oil cap loose it
will die. All of the items have been put
back to correct operation once we have
ascertained that they don’t influence the
symptom. If the rpm is raised a bit or
lowered a bit the problem leaves for a
moment at the problem rpm range and
then returns. We believe we have set the
12
carburetors up properly. Plugs, wires,
timing, valves, etc. all seem to be okay.
The vehicle is equipped with electronic
ignition, rather than points. Would you
possibly have any suggestions? We would
appreciate any advice you may be able
to provide. John Riley is the gentleman
actually working with the car. He is
very familiar with British cars, but we
don’t have a lot of resource information
available to us regarding this particular
model.
We sure appreciate your help
Jeff Haun
Wow, that's a tough one, Jeff. Here are a
few thoughts that might help, not in any
particular order :
1) I would be tempted to convert back
to points, temporarily, just to absolutely
eliminate the electronic ignition as the
Southern California Triumph Owners Association
source of the problem. I had somewhat
similar problems once, that proved to be
the ignition rotor contacting the pickup
for the electronic ignition. Not that I'm
suggesting that is your problem, just that
odd things can happen with conversions.
2) Along the same lines, make sure
the coil, ballast resistor and ignition all
match each other. A 74 TR6 would have
originally had an external ballast resistor
incorporated in the wiring harness,
and a coil that requires an external
ballast. Most electronic conversions
will require that this wire be replaced
or bypassed. Then some ignitions will
require a ballast, and others won't. The
issue is particularly confusing for the
TR6, because earlier cars did not have an
external ballast, and used a coil with an
internal ballast. Using an early coil with
an external ballast can lead to strange
drivability problems (due to lack of
primary current), while using a late coil
without a ballast can cause some ignitions
(and points) to overheat.
3) If it's still there, you might try
disconnecting the white/yellow wire at
the coil. I had a problem on my 71 Stag
once where this wire was broken and
intermittently shorting to ground. It's
only needed for improved starts in cold
weather anyway, the car should start &
run fine without it.
float bowl vents. There is a valve that is
supposed to operate off-idle, that blocks
off the idle vent through the carbon
canister and opens the bowls to the air
cleaner through a hole on the face of the
carbs. If the hole is blocked or the valve
is not operating, you could get problems.
6) Just because you didn't mention it,
try disconnecting and blocking off the
vacuum line to the brake booster.
7) Check the distributor for excess play in
the shaft, and proper advance operation.
The play can be checked by simply
grabbing the shaft and trying to wiggle it
from side to side. The advance operation
can be checked with a timing light ... the
timing mark should move smoothly as the
rpm is slowly increased and decreased.
Sometimes a worn shaft or mechanism
can start to vibrate at certain rpm,
causing erratic timing (even with an
electronic conversion).
8) I assume you've checked the
dashpots for sufficient oil. There is an
O-ring inside that can sometimes break
and allow them to leak.
Just so you will know, it's normal for this
engine to pull a slight vacuum on the
crankcase, and idle rpm to drop sharply
when the oil cap is opened. Basically,
the PCV system has no fresh air intake.
4) Have you checked that the bypass
valves are not opening?
I've attached a few documents that
may be helpful, if only to provide some
background information on the car.
5) Next thing I would look at are the

Fuel tank, limited fill

Sealed fuel filler cap
Anti run-on valve
The fuel tank filler tube extends into the tank, preventing complete filling. There is sufficient
space left in the fuel tank for the fuel to expand in hot weather.
The fuel tank filler cap is sealed.
The piping from the fuel tank incorporates a vapour separator which allows for a fuel 'splash
surge' condition, thus trapping the fuel and allowing a drain-back into the tank and preventing
the charcoal canister becoming saturated. Fuel is discouraged from entering the piping to the
charcoal canister even during pressure filling of the fuel tank, by means of an air restrictor valve
situated near the charcoal canister.

A
s you know, TR drivers use all their senses when driving our little British cars
(LBC). We don’t need any computer diagnostics! We can smell trouble, like
last month when I took the TR3 in for an oil change, I smelled coolant just
as I drove into Britalia. The fellows caught it just in time, before it became a
problem, a leaky radiator hose in the making. Now I wish I could identify that
new smell coming from the TR4 when I first start it up. The inside of the car has the
smell you smell when you pump up your tires, very strange. And of course we have
finely tuned ears that catch many potential problems before we need a tow truck.
Then there is the sense
of touch. After thirtyfive years of driving my
TR4, I know every smell,
sound and now touch
of the car. I was feeling
a new sensation in the
seat of my pants; a new
vibration (cheap thrills). I was sure Walt was going to laugh at me when I
told him about it; but he didn’t. “I never laugh at a customer,” he said when
I told him not to laugh. I described the feeling and he said, “I know what
that is.” After putting the car on the hoist, he determined that the differential
needed work – nothing serious but I would have to leave it for a couple of
days – this is a summer job. Allen I need a ride.
Yahoo it is March! I never thought I would be happy to see a bill – the AAA
Club bill. I now have my four allotted tows back. It has been white knuckles
since last August when I ran out of tows and was forced to be creative. I can
tell you all my senses have been at a heighten state of alert since that time.
But I can say without hesitation – I LOVE MY CARS!

CCBCC Wine Tour
T
February 3–4, 2007
By Wes Lowery
o those who missed the CCBCC Wine Tour this year, there's still some
good news. They are going to do it again next year.
Don Green and Susan Escalante hosted the event with a few new ideas
this year. Four routes were provided to about 80 or so drivers and
guests and included one to four wineries with other places of interest.
A picnic spot was in the middle somewhere and most had lunch in the open
with near perfect weather.
Our tour included an olive oil processing plant with a tour of the process
equipment and a bread and oil tasting afterwards served in the style if italian
restaurants. We also visited an Avocado store and picked up some nice items
with avocados being sold at bargain prices after the freeze. Of course seeing
the damage that the freezing weather did was an eye opener and brought a
little harsh reality to bear.
Afterwards there was still time for antique shopping in Cayucos by the Bay. a
little rest, then came the Social Hour with everyone bringing snacks and wine.
The room was cozy with a nice fire and a lot of fun was had claiming prizes
from the raffle and discussing the day's events.

Wine Tour
By Paulette Caudill
Everything is going to be OK. Not so, Allen called me at 1:15 in a frenzy. "I'm
on the 405 and it is a parking lot. A crane has fallen across the freeway and it
is stopped dead and I'm overheating. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take the 405."
"Wow, Allen, I hope you make it", I told him. He can you tell you that story.
Well you don't have to tell me twice, we went the coast route. I hate to say it,
but it was a beautiful drive. We arrived in Pismo at about 5 and started the
party with dinner at Steamers.
The Saturday wine tour was great. There were four tours to pick from. Two
of the tours had four wineries, all new, never been to before wineries and
the two tours had two wineries. Each tour was unique, one had a tour of a
winery, one tour had a tasting at an olive oil producer, and some went to an
avocado grove. All the tours had a drive and you could even tailor that to
your liking. The tours were of varying lengths from 50 miles to 125 miles.
I was riding with Bob Muzio and we went for the gusto, four wineries and
125 miles. It was so much fun riding in his beautiful Jaguar XKE. The weather
was perfect and the drive was gorgeous! That Saturday night, we had the
traditional pot luck dinner back at the motel, complete with raffle where near
everyone walked away with a prize, even me.
This is a picture of Myself and Bob Muzio, Allen and Corrine Cox, Greg and Shirley Rickard eating
lunch at one of the wineries.
T
I hear they are going to offer these same tours next year. I'm going on the
olive oil one. That sounded real different and people enjoyed it. Wes and
Gerty Lowery went this year, their first and had a great time. Hope to see you
there next year. – Paulette
his year's Wine Tour, sponsored by the Central Coast British Car Club
(CCBCC), was an exceptional event. The new event organizers Don
Green and Team went over the top in planning this event. There was
something for everyone.
We did our usual meet at Randy's Donut on Friday around 12:30. Well, we
started to do our usual, but the planets were simply lined up wrong, real
wrong. I tore a calf muscle the week before and decided to ride with my
friends Greg and Shirley Rickard. We were to meet up with Allen and Corrine
Cox at Randy's and then rendezvous with Bob Muzio in the Valley. At 12:15 I
got word from Greg that his daughter had experienced a fender bender and

The New Mercedes Benz SCL600
It's a very nice car, but you'd need a 12 year old to drive it for you – and
