THE CHRISTMAS DINNER held on November 28 at the Mt. Osmond Golf Club was a
most pleasant evening. The multi talented harpist, Emma Horwood, entertained us with her
beautiful music during pre-dinner drinks and for the first part of the dinner, culminating with a
short performance which included her singing several delightful Christmas Carols. Everyone
enjoyed her fantastic music which set the scene for the whole evening. Special guests were
DG Jim Hewitson and Lions Lady, Aileen. DG Jim gave a short address and also presented a
President’s Award medallion to Immediate Past President, Noel O’Brien and his DG’s
Bannerette to President John Hillman, who in turn presented Secretary Alan Hook with the
well deserved “100% Secretary’s Award” medallion. Of special note were the lovely table
decorations, thanks to Barbara and Danny Watson. The miniature bon-bons which contained
quite “funny” jokes and the usual paper hats were much appreciated. (Photos top- Emma

FROM THE BOARD-
The 2008 Art Show proceeds will be used by the Mary Potter
Foundation to provide special patient lifting equipment. At the meeting 0n 23 January our
guest speaker will be Courtney Doherty from Youth Opportunities who impressed us so much
at the Premiers Awards night. The YOTY judging will take place at our partner’s dinner on 27
February at Mount Osmond Golf Club. An application will be made for the Premier’s
Community Service awards next year with the project being the East Timor Teacher Training
program. There will be an Art Show raffle next year and tickets will be sold at Burnside
Village prior to the event and during the Show. Brian Mooney has expressed his wish to be
replaced as our web-master. It will be difficult to do so as we need a person prepared to
take on the job as a volunteer. Due to the loss of three weeks of trading at the Bookmart, we
are down about $2,500. Advice from Council has confirmed the engaging of underpinners
who are preparing a quotation for Council and if beyond budget, other options may be
explored. The range of books in the limited area is gradually being expanded and sales are
improving. A luncheon was organised for the Bookmart volunteers on Friday 14 December.
The board approved a donation of $2,000 to the Spinal Cord Fellowship. Requests for funding
for the Toc H children’s camp and computers for the Kensington Centre were not
recommended.

Andrew, our deepest sympathy. Tusmore Uniting Church (where Sue and Russell were
married) was overflowing and additional chairs had to be brought in for the funeral service
which was well represented by Lions and Lions ladies. It was enlightening
enlightening for most of us to
hear how much Sue had packed into her life. From being a teacher until recent years, she
took up an enormous amount of volunteer work with the Smith Family “learning for life”
program, as a volunteer councillor and in various roles with the Adelaide Zoo and the
Monato Zoo. In addition, she was a guide at Ayres House and Beaumont House but still had
time for her exquisite patchwork, sewing and knitting. Games of Mah

were fitted in, as was a computer course only weeks before her death. Her life and her
standards were clearly punctuated by Ester, Rebecca and Andrew who bravely spoke about
the wonderful mother they knew. It was announced at the end of the service that it was her
wish that we return to the family home
home for a “glass of champagne with her”. It was
memorable for those of us who did so and an opportunity to further reflect on Sue’s life.
Russell and the family would like to take this opportunity of thanking those Lions and Lions
ladies who showed concern and support during a most difficult and distressing time.
CLUB TREASURER, Hayden Edwards,
addressed our last meeting to explain his role.
A member since 1986, Hayden has served as
Cabinet Treasurer for a number of years during
that time. He explained that Clubs, Districts
and Multiple District need to be viable entities.
Lions International believe that a district needs
to have more than 1,500 members to be
viable. Although our subscriptions have
remained static for several years, they do not
quite cover amounts paid to District, Multiple
District and Lions International. Hayden does
not however, envisage increases in our
subscriptions in the foreseeable future. Funds
forwarded to District cover the provision of the
annual directory, the International Convention
Fund, insurances, the Youth Exchange fund
and programs such as Prostate Cancer
awareness, Youth of the Year, Papua New
Guinea Assistance Fund, ALF donation and
the LCIF donation, to name a few. Other costs
include member kits, badges and awards,
bannerettes, flowers, our post box and other
sundry administrative expenses.
OOPS!- While waiting
patiently for Lions lady Heather
recently (outside Coles at
Burnside Village) Lion Evan
Jenkins was heard to remark
about the large sign alongside
the Christmas tree encouraging
the deposit of gifts for the
needy. The sign said “please
help Anglicare and the Glenside
Lions”. Evan exclaimed “is there
something I do not know
about”?. Heather then returned
and they both moved on.
Further inspection showed that
the two small signs on the
surrounding enclosure
referred to the Burnside Lions!
Simply a case of a typo on
behalf of the sign maker, we
suspect. But as Evan put it- “any
credit and publicity for the
Glenside Lions is just fine!”
SHORT STOPSLion Frank Bowering and Lions lady, Chris are among our overseas travellers who have recently
returned. They enjoyed six weeks away in the United Kingdom, and culminating with a twelve day
Mediterranean cruise. Memorable highlights included the nightly international entertainment on
board the “Norwegian Jewel”, the stop offs to view the mystical site of Ancient Olympia, sipping
Turkish Apple Tea in the bazaar in Izmir and a visit to Istanbul’s Blue Mosque. Being hassled by the
locals at the Pyramids was another experience. Travelling by car in the UK, the scenery of Ireland
and Northern Wales, along with Santorini was among the best encountered. Other highlights were
Belfast and the Christmas Shop at Harrod’s.
Lion Yee-Cheng Leong and Lions lady Audrey appreciated their recent trip to Spain with
highlights including the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in
Barcelona. Other significant places enjoyed were Lisbon in Portugal, Madrid, Toledo, Algeciras,
Gibraltar, Ronda, Cordoba and Valencia in Spain and Tangier in Morocco. A lot of time was spent
exploring, enjoying the sights and the local food. The culture included paintings, sculptures,
architecture and the history of Spain from the middle ages to the Muslim occupation.
SORRY FOLKS- As there will not be an edition of the ePride in January, you will all have to
wait until February for your monthly “fix”. Another series of “Our Fabulous Volunteers” will
