“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering
itself. And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its
dream...” said Paulo Coelho, Alchemist.
Sleeping in the dark, riding a bike, the first day of school, how about
that first kiss... Remember your childhood fears that you
conquered. Freshman year of high school followed by college, first
jobs and parenthood; we have many firsts we experience as we
move along life. Obstacles are inevitable.Think of some traumatic
situations that are now distant memories. Of course some
experiences were painful but you are still standing. You survived.
You are blessed. What’s next?
Let 2014 take you to new heights by implementing a plan to improve
your life. But first, dare yourself to dream the unthinkable. Answer
the exploratory question “What would you do if you could not
fail?” After your mind tells you all of the excuses and the anxiety
quiets down, imagine the dream no matter how scary or silly. Pray
about it. Then google “how to be a lion trainer” and find out what
it will take. Write that plan, step by step and go for it.
Let GOD take care of today’s BIG fears like he did the little ones;
the old fears were scarier than the real deal, right?
Ask GOD, release your fear. Success is calling.

nd, Grace & Gratitude
“The Uber Awesome Socialite Rockstar,” that’s the tagline of lyrically gifted songstress,
SahLence. If you’ve ever spent five minutes in her presence, it’s easy to see why. Her personality is bright, her words are luminary, and her voice is sensational. This charismatic
and eclectic singer-songwriter hails from Staten Island, New York, but was raised along
the east coast and carries with her all the flavor of New York, all the color of Miami, and
all the gritty soul of Baltimore.
The songstress just released her debut EP “Grind, Grace & Gratitude.” SahLence began
singing at the age of eight in her school concert choir, and greatly progressed as a vocalist under the guidance of several amazing and accomplished instructors. Her love for
songwriting also spawned at an early age. She began writing short stories and jingles at
the young age of four years old. By the age of 12, SahLence had co-created the score of
an all original off-Broadway play written by her and her fellow classmates in a New York
City arts program known as “Broadway Breaks Away”. By the age of 14, she was producing, writing, recording and singing her own original music.
A classically trained Soprano I, SahLence has the versatility and range to sing a wide array of genres from Opera to Jazz, however, her heart is in Urban Pop and R&B.As a performer, SahLence earned her stripes learning the ropes as a background vocalist for several artists on the Baltimore music scene, including Marcel Russel, J.S.O.U.L and Che Ray.
She attended college at Coppin State University, a small HBCU in the heart of Baltimore,
Maryland, where she majored in Music Entertainment Management. Her major further
encouraged her presence on campus as a performer, and she quickly became known for
her powerful voice and colorful personality. Wanting to break away from being known as
“just another background vocalist”, she began frequenting open mics in the DMV area,
and quickly began to shine as a solo artist, making herself a staple at favorited open mic
events Organic Soul Tuesdays and Warm Wednesdays. On her quest to become a soloist,
SahLence met DC producer and drummer Kevin Rutledge, who groomed her studio etiquette. SahLence learned the ropes of recording under Kevin’s guidance, and with him,
wrote and recorded dozens of records as both a songwriter and artist.
Over the years, SahLence has had the opportunity to collaborate with several artists and
producers as both a singer and a songwriter. She has had the privilege of working with
Fred The Godson, Boola (Ne-Yo, Beenie Siegel, Nicole Wray, Kanye West) , Syesha Mercado (American Idol Season 7 finalist), The Heatmakerz (The Diplomats, Cam’Ron, Juelz
Santana), The Twilite Tone (Common, Kanye West), Jarina DeMarco (Wyclef Jean’s All
Handz On Deck), Dice Raw of The Roots, Ray Angry (Joss Stone, The Roots, Mick Jagger,
Elvis Costello) and several other world renowned artists, producers, and musicians.
Though the grind has been non-stop and the experiences enriching; this is step one.
SahLence realizes that she is merely getting started in her career, and is excited for all
that is to come in the future.

Junetta Barnes
THICKER THAN WATER
Timothy 6:10
Text: Nikia Wainwright-Vaughan
Junetta Barnes, co-star of Bravo’s new reality series,
“Thicker Than Water” is a wife, First Lady, mother, entrepreneur and a child of God. Can one have prosperity in
the church? Should one think that “God wants us all to be
millionaires?” Well Junetta explains how God does want us
all to be blessed with good fortune, but not necessarily in
the form of money.
Junetta Barnes was born and raised in Detroit Michigan.
She experienced “The Motor City” during the bustling 90’s.
“It was awesome growing up in Detroit back then. It’s just
sad the current state the city is in and how it has declined.”
When Junetta, middle child to Earthel and June LaGreen,
was growing up, she and her sisters, Jewel, the star of
Thicker than Water and Junice, were blessed to grow up
in a two parent household. Her family owned LaGreen’s
Records. “We lived in the record store.” Stars and recording artists were always in and out of LaGreen’s. The family
was just honored in Detroit paying homage to LaGreen’s.
Her parents, who just recently celebrated their 46 years of
marriage, did not necessarily raise them on a church foundation. They were Christians however. “We were an Easter
and Christmas family. We believed that attending church on
these days would keep them out of hell.”
Junetta says her father, was a vital part of history in Detroit.
It was rare for an African American to prosper in entrepreneurship and be successful back then. Junetta is proud of
that fact. Perhaps this is where her drive of entrepreneurship comes from. A strong foundation in a belief certainly
can carry a legacy, especially if it is a positive one.
Junetta was living in Tennessee when she met her husband, Rev. George J. Barnes through a friend online. Yes,
she was “very leery” at first. “It was three weeks to a month
Photos: P.A. Greene
before I even gave him my phone number. I had to make
sure he wasn’t crazy.” They talked on the phone for about
two months then she flew to Baltimore saying, “ I love love
love Baltimore! The first time I came to Baltimore, I cried.
Yes I was excited to see my boo too, but my experience
was awesome. He took me to the Harbor and I was done.”
One particular weekend during their relationship, Rev.
Barnes drove 12 hours both ways to see Junetta. Stopped
to take breaks in his travel and made it back on time to go
straight to work that Monday at Johns Hopkins. Now that is
love! Especially with these gas prices. The rest is history.
Fast forward to today. Junetta’s oldest sister Jewel and
Brother in Law, Ben Tankard a Grammy nominated recording artist/Pastor are stars of Bravo’s Thicker Than Water.
The Tankards believe “God wants us all to be Millionaires.”
How does Junetta feel about her in-laws belief? Chuckling,
Junetta responds, “I love them, I don’t always agree with
everything. God wants us all to be blessed, in all forms, not
necessarily with money.” Junetta says “Yes, God wants us
to have a good self image ... a good heart, being at peace,
happy and yes becoming financially stable and not to
struggle.”
People often stray away from church, especially mega
churches, because they believe that the Bishops, Pastors
and Elders, use money and flaunt it and not give back to
the needy. However, when asked how she felt about “The
Mega Church?” Junetta thinks that “God wants his church
to grow. That’s what church is for, spreading the good news
and saving souls. We need an Army, so yes the church
should always need and want to increase in size.” Junetta
explains that she and her husband of ten years, Rev.
George J. Barnes, do not take a salary from their church,

Junetta Barnes: Thicker Than Water
Continued
St. in East Baltimore. She and her husband are very successful entrepreneurs. People
assume that they take a salary from their church because she and her husband drive
luxury cars. Believe it or not, Junetta was one of those very believers. Junetta converted to
Islam at 20 years old. “I was so far removed from the church. The person she was dating
was Muslim and she believed all Pastors were “fake” and Islam was the way to go, at that
time. Junetta said she had become disappointed in the church, She felt that Pastors were
commercial bull. So she left.
Realizing that her faith was truly Christianity, Junetta left the Islamic religion and returned to
practicing Christianity.
Bravo’s “Thicker Than Water” is a true depiction of “real life” explains Junetta. Although,
she admits the way the show is edited, it can leave room for questions. “I have a new level
of respect for people on television. It’s a lot of work.” Because all the taping took place in
Tennessee, Junetta was flying back and forth making it very exhausting. “I was exhausted
mentally and emotionally. Especially those sister scenes; none of them were planned. We
were and still are facing a lot of issues.”
When asked if she was happy with the way her family represents the Kingdom on television
she answers, “Yes and No. Again the way things are cut and edited, some things are not
shown, leaving the viewers, well you know? With questions.” Junetta does explain that it is
real, “It’s organic and it’s family stuff.” Junetta says that she and her sister Jewel are very
close. “We are best friends.” Junice is estranged. I pray “Our relationship will be restored.”
Filming is over and she currently is not aware of a second season. She has not been asked
to film at this point, however, she believes the producers have been in touch with her sister.
For now, First Lady Junetta Barnes is focused on “Empowering Baltimore.” “We could
have started a church anywhere.” Junetta is primarily focused on empowering women and
children especially. Having left Michigan in the middle of attending school and quitting her
job, Junetta is a survivor of domestic violence. She was running from a relationship. “I was

W
e sat down with young
Malcolm one Saturday afternoon, he wasn’t hard to spot.
Somehow, in a crowded Panera Bread…
his energy spoke from across the room.
His superstar status was apparent.
He’s a young man, with a great vision and
an old fashioned work ethic.
Malcolm had just finished shooting the
second season of the Disney Channel
Show, “The Avatars” in Spain. He’s
stateside, for now… after serendipitously
finding an apartment in Harlem. Malcolm
said he “Played the lottery on Craig’s list”,
but it seems like he hit the jackpot on the
first try the landlord on the other end
of the phone was an old classmate. He
viewed and moved into the apartment
that same day. Beginners’ luck? Maybe,
but the wise actor doesn’t think so at all,.
He doesn’t believe in coincidence, saying
that it was meant to be.
Malcolm was the typical kid growing up,
he played sports and chased girls. It was
actually the pursuit of one of those young
women that landed him in 9th grade
drama class. Oddly enough, the young
lady who told him she was signing up for
the class never showed… but he needed
the credit so, why not? His talents first
caught the eye of his teacher who told
him emphatically, “You’ve got it… you
“Not my job. My drive…my drive
got me out of here. “
could do this.” To which he responded,
“Ooookay… I’m going to basketball practice.“ But then slowly… basketball faded
away and acting took over his life. Malcolm was 14.
As he began to decide on his future plans,
one day, without warning a packet for an
acting school, he’d never heard of and
never requested information from appeared in his mailbox. He applied and the
rest, is history!
Now, he lives his life on the premise of
some words spoken to him by his father
on his graduation day. “It’s do or die.” Malcolm said those words stuck with him…
so much, he figured “I’ll do it.”
Doing it is an understatement. The young
actor who says he eventually wants to
accomplish more than Will Smith has his
sights set on the West Coast. He says he
met Will Smith when he was just 9 years
old, and told him he wanted to be in the
next Men in Black, Smith laughed, but
Malcolm is making that dream a reality. He explains the countless hours he
spends on sets. The hectic and sometimes
lonely lifestyle that leaves him constantly
yearning to achieve more.
The stars in his eyes are infectious. He
makes you believe in him, heck, Malcolm
makes you believe in you. He says ,”I believe an actor must love his dreams and
know how to use them. Imagination is the
eye of the soul.. I create from there.” Even
with that confidence, he’s one of the most
humble young men you’ll ever meet.
When asked how he felt having “made
it” out of Baltimore… he said, “I haven’t
made it. Anybody can make it out of Baltimore, just drive to PA. I’m not big time, I
just work hard that’s it. I just work hard I’m
just an actor, I’m literally nobody. My job
took me out of here.“ He corrects himself,
“Not my job. My drive…my drive got me
out of here. “
With the positive attitude and monster
work ethic that Malcolm has, the sky
isn’t even the limit. We expect to see him
shooting on the moon! Malcolm Xavier
Jones is definitely a person to watch. We’ll
keep you posted, when he gets his star on
the Walk of Fame…

The French Kitchen
I
n the new year, please add French cuisine to your dining
experiences. Visit Baltimore’s new restaurant The French Kitchen
located at The new Lord Baltimore Hotel. The restaurant debuted in
December 2013 to great reviews. Our party dined in a beautiful setting reminiscent of the French Renaissance. High ceilings, gold & royal
blue decor, and mirrored walls-- an atmosphere channeling the Lord
Baltimore’s original 1928 charm. We experienced a delightful evening
of traditional french cuisine created under the direction of Chef Jordan Miller. We tried an array of dishes including classics: french onion
soup, Steak frites and Boeuf Bourguignon. I normally despise beets
but surprisingly fell in love with Betteraves, the five way beet salad.
The 85 yr old landmark, formerly a Radisson hotel, was bought in
July 2013 by Rubell Hotels. The first phase of the hotel’s renovations
introduced The French Kitchen. The Lord Baltimore will be fully transformed by Spring 2014.
The hotel is located in the city center near the intersection of Baltimore and Charles Street in the heart of Baltimore (at Baltimore &
Hanover Street). It’s three blocks from the Inner Harbor. Valet parking
is offered, and several self-parking facilities are adjacent to the hotel.
The French Kitchen is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday from
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m to 10 p.m. for dinner, as well as Sunday
brunch.

Everyday a lady ventures into the world. She gallantly strides
through her queendom surveying the landscape. She calmly gestures the order of the day to her royal subjects and of course, they
promptly obey.
“Beep, beeep, BEEEEEP.” The alarm clock awakens her majesty.
Reality. Thank GOD, I’m here to see another day. Things to do.
What are my things to do? The “real” lady side eyes the day’s
offerings because she knows all too well that life is an adventure.
Each 24 hour schedule never fails to entertain. Each breath, each
moment may unveil another facet of her multidimensional persona.
Will she quiet her bigger than life personality just to fit in. Or turn up
the volume because she is so so shy. What about the sweet soft spot
her inner lioness guards; growling to shady trespassers. Lest not
forget the sexy alter ego...the Sasha Fierce or Sheyoncé that takes
care of her lover. She may wear her heart on her sleeve or tuck it
safely away into her purse. How she handles child-rearing is a story
for another day. No matter what self she shares, she arms herself
with the style and grace of her best self. She’s gonna look good.
Yes indeed. No matter what.
In time, a wise lady discovers she is most free when she is
allowed to be “SHE.” Whatever she is...she is unapologetically happy
when she is confident and embraces every single side of her.
A wise man, Phil Crump, shared “When you can live with the
consequences of every choice you make. Accept responsibility for
that choice and not care of what others think. You will discover the
key to happiness.”
Humble, loving, angry, smart, sophisticated, goofy, sad, irritated,
caring, stern, distressed, weak, creative, strong, confused, focused,
athletic, jubilant, erotic, feisty, flirtatious, warrior, baby, industrious,
bossy, submissive, weird, artsy, and so forth. Being all that she can
be is when she finds power in every shade of Yay!

Definition: an exclamation used to express joy, excitement, etc.
