The Flywire 10 +love notes Hey Love, Bravery is defined as the quality that allows someone to do things that are dangerous or frightening; the quality or state of being brave. This is our Brave edition of the Flywire magazine. Read the profiles within our pages and be inspired to unleash your Brave spirit. You work hard on your singing career no matter how many doors close and understand the countless years are not wasted. The hard work and time are investments. It built your muscle that’s why we call you Brave, Miss Brave Williams [page 60]. Madame President, you suffered, fought and survived breast cancer and was inspired to make sure other women don’t walk alone in the dark hours of suffering. You make wishes come true [page 14]. Miss Johnson you found strength and creativity in every adversity and emerged to star in your own life. You are no longer in the shadows of a famous husband. You are more than an Atlanta Ex. [page 20]. She couldn’t read or write but a young girl lets hip hop music propel her pass learning disabilities and a debilitating illness. She triumphantly sparkles as an author and journalist [page 72]. My mom calls me her “Indian Warrior Princess.” As Jay-Z rhymes “She get it from her momma.” I inherited a lot of my mom’s spunkiness and activism. Yet this year a family crisis revealed a young braveheart of our own [page 13]. Bravery is doing what you have to do... period. It’s not always an award winning , headline newsworthy accomplishment but it’s always about taking action. It’s doing exactly what is needed. It’s about God’s perfect timing. Sincerely, Social Butterfly The Flywire 12 BRAVEHEART Text: M. E. Crump One Sunday evening, my son runs up the steps and yells “Ma, come here!” He just shook his head and said “She was in the basement by herself. She was all by herself.” I’m on the phone but quickly realize something is seriously wrong. I tell my girlfriend I have to go. I hang up and rush to follow him. In a panic, he says “It’s grandma. Something is wrong with grandma.” When his father arrived to the hospital. I told him how upset our son was. His Dad sat him down and explained to him. You are looking at it in the wrong way. Son, you were not late. You were right on time. God sent you to the basement at the perfect time. You arrived at the precise second to save your grandmother’s life. Seconds later I reach the basement to see him kneeling next to the unconscious body of my mother. My son is breathlessly telling me “I heard something earlier. I heard a sound but ignored it. I should of been here earlier. It ‘s my fault.” “It’s not your fault,” I respond. “Go get the phone and call 9-1-1.” I check my mom’s condition and call her name. I can see she’s bleeding. She doesn’t repsond but she is breathing heavily, matter of fact, she sounds like she’s snoring. This was a relief to me. My son quickly returns and hands me the phone. I speak to the emergency operator. I see the concern in my son’s eyes but he joins me as we both follow the operator’s step by step directions as I repeat them out loud. The paramedics arrive and we assist them the best we can. He removes himself from the room and I know he’s distraught. He’s very upset. He’s only 14 years old. I let him be. I continue to speak with the paramedics and he rejoins the scene. When the ambulance leaves with my mom. I hug him. We rush to get dressed. I pack up my mom’s things, secure the house and we leave for the hospital. He repeats the story. “It’s all my fault. I heard a noise and didn’t think anything of it. I don’t know how long Grandma was in the basement. I should have been there sooner. Something made me get up to go check the basement and that’s when I found her.” I told him. “Boy you saved her life. If it wasn’t for you she wouldn’t be getting the help she needs right now.” My mother was unconscious for 10 days but she fought back and survived a stroke and a brain bleed. I tease and call her our miracle baby. After 3 weeks in the hospital she learned that her grandson saved her life. She’s so proud and tells everyone he’s her hero. When we knew things were better for mom, my son and I had a serious talk. He didn’t see himself as an hero. He told me “Ma not once did you panic or cry. You just jumped in and was super strong. I wasn’t like you.” “Don’t compare yourself to my crazy ass,” I explained. “I’m not normal. I get scared but my gift is handling stress under pressure. I can’t explain it but I’m just built like that.” It dawned on me. He still didn’t understand how brave he was. “You handled this situation better than most adults I know. There are 3 human reactions in crisis. Some people freeze, some people run and others jump in and do what they have to do. Every person will experience each reaction during their lifetime and it’s nothing wrong with that. I want you to know that you exhibited the character I admire in a man. You stepped up, jumped in and didn’t hesitate to save your grandmother’s life. Even while you were upset. That’s what heroes do. I am proud of you. The Flywire 14 +spotlight SHAY SHARPE Yes Young Women Can and Do Get Breast Cancer It’s that time of year. I remind myself. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October. Oh yeah, I want to promote Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes annual fundraiser. This year’s Black Tie Affair is scheduled for Sunday, September 28th. Better yet, let’s include a feature on Shay in our next issue of the magazine. I discussed my ideas with creative director and photographer Paul Greene. We were working with no time and a scarce glam team. It was everyone’s last dash for a summer vacation. No time to waste, I reached out to Shay Sharpe, Madame President of the non-profit of her namesake, She called her glam team for an impromptu photo shoot and made it happen. Great timing, we can publicize her organization’s Arabian Nights Black Tie Affair and Breast Cancer Awareness month. Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes raises funds to grant wishes to young women, age 40 and under, who have been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Shay was inspired after surviving a brutal but victorious battle with breast cancer. She was only 26 years old when she was diagnosed with Stage III cancer. Since 2011, Shay has dedicated everyday to helping and teaching women and their families about living, fighting, surviving breast cancer. The day I texted her to set up an interview is the day I read online that her cancer had returned. “Last night, I received the phone call, that nobody wants,” Shay shares on facebook. “The caller confirmed that cancer has returned in my left breast. Almost 10 years to the exact day of my initial breast cancer diagnosis, I embark on this journey again. I don’t have any additional information and won’t know any until I see my oncologist next week. In the meantime, I need all of your prayers! That’s it! Nothing else! Just pray for my family, especially my mom. Pray. Then pray some more. #PrayForShay Diagnosed at 26 & 36. Young women CAN and DO get breast cancer!” Please #PrayforShay. The hashtag is immediately reposted in messages from so many people sending Shay love, prayers and support. To understand the magnitude of Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes is to peek into the heart of its founder. That’s not hard to do because she reveals it everyday to the world. Shay’s life is a ministry. She works tirelessly and has developed a communications outreach that is powerful, informative and inspiring. For years, she gives the nitty gritty details of her journey, she shares tips, explains medical procedures and posts statistics. As she learns she shares to the world. Madame President gives all she’s got. She’s seen in pictures baring the ugly scars of her full masectomy. Naked and fearless, teaching women to be brave. She’s seen in pictures glamourous and sexy teaching women to be courageously beautiful. Her message that there is life after cancer. Now her battle with cancer is back. Yet she’s still busy. In between doctor’s appointments, she’s organizing and promoting her big charity ball, raising money for her own treatment and helping other women and their families. In each message she writes #PrayforShay understanding fully that GOD got her through cancer before and God can get her through this again, Let’s Pray for Shay. Let’s do this together. To support, go to: http://shaysharpespinkwishes.org. Tickets are available for Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes’ Arabian Nights Black Tie Fundraiser. The event will be held Sunday, September 28, 2014, 6-10p at the Valley Mansion, 594 Cranbrook Rd, Cockeysville, MD 21030. #PrayforShay www.ShaySharpesPinkWishes.org Photographer: Drexina Nelson Make-up and Hair: Toni Acey Stylist: Taijuan Wilcox e x E c The Flywire 20 +hollywood cellence a n i t s i r h C ohnson J +hollywood Christina Johnson was recently introduced to the world on VH-1’s new series “Atlanta Exes.” Her graceful and statuesque manner is a calming force among the cast of superstar ex-wives. Don’t e p o H believe her sweet demeanor and loyalty amiko Text: T to former husband iconic musician Cee-lo as a weakness. This woman is a strong. Super strong. It has often been said that whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. If that is true, Christina Johnson has superhuman strength. A teen mom born to a teenage mother, Johnson refused to be a statistic. The Charlotte, NC native relocated to Atlanta, GA in 1997 with her two young daughters in pursuit of a creative career, but as fate would have it, she met and fell in love with burgeoning rapper/singer Cee-Lo (formerly of NBC’s The Voice). Sharing mutual passions for family life and artistic expression, Johnson served as Cee-Lo’s muse in several of his music videos, the couple married in 2000 and welcomed son Kingston O’Keefe Callaway in 2001. Although Johnson was a new wife and raising children including a newborn, she also gave birth to InnerPiece Designs (IPD), a progressive interior design and consultancy firm. InnerPiece Designs is known for its minimalistic approach to design by combining natural and organic materials with modern pieces that visually harmonize with the high-end residential properties and commercial spaces they work with. IPD’s global clientele extends from superstar entertainers such as Cee-Lo, Ludacris and Young Jeezy, to athletes, urbanites and business professionals. Johnson’s work has appeared on national TV programming like MTV, as well as in between the pages of Ebony, VIBE, Atlanta Peach and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles where she was featured in the Top 10 Under 40 issue. Johnson divorced in 2005, which ironically left her seeking inner peace, as well as confronting deeply hidden issues she had buried since childhood. Johnson sought solace in her service-first attitude and got involved with a domestic violence organization where she began speaking to youth at Atlanta area schools on the subjects of dating and domestic violence, something she continues to do. As one of the stars of VH1’s “Atlanta Exes”, Johnson values the sisterhood bond she’s developed with her enterprising cast mates, but she also hopes to shed light on Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland. Diagnosed in 2009, Johnson has undergone 3 surgeries in as many years but remains optimistic and active in spite of her condition. The visionary mogul is the co-founder of beauty brand Butterfly EFX alongside celebrity makeup artist Toni Acey that will launch later this year. Johnson and Acey leveraged their affinity for fashion and style by developing a highly pigmented palette of lipsticks and lip-glosses that are not only richly saturated in color, but also beautifully packaged. The duo will be introducing a charitable foundation called Lipstick Therapy that’s committed to helping women cultivate a positive self-image through art and educational programs, in addition to providing complimentary grooming sessions. Having overcome years of setbacks and battles, Johnson feels that she is finally living her purpose and what some may consider the new American dream. As a devoted mother, businesswoman, spiritual guru and philanthropist, Christina Johnson may not view herself as a modern day superwoman, but if the cape fits…might as well wear it and own it. ROD WOMACK A. Rod Womack is a talented writer whose motivation and passion for storytelling distinguishes him from many of his contemporaries. Redwood is his first book. Redwood is a gripping true story of a once successful and popular Baltimore restaurant known for its great cuisine, vivacious musical entertainment, radiant atmosphere, and lavish celebrity events. So what happened to the Redwood Grill? What caused its demise? The book dives into the incredible story of three young entrepreneurs who bought the business and worked tirelessly to make this restaurant the pinnacle dining experience. The story takes many twists and turns, leading the owners through a maze of surreal challenges along the way. The conflict intensifies when they discover that they’ve been employing a serial killer. The journey is riveted with humor, intrigue, mystery, conflict, relationship, drama, and many takeaways for future restaurateurs. Just as the dust seemed to settle the entrepreneurs were challenged again by a charming and charismatic con-artist. A. Rod co-owned his first company at 18 years old. His entrepreneurial experience spans numerous industries including; restaurants, real estate development, construction, concert promotions, and more. In 2010 he left the private sector and worked as a Business Liaison for Baltimore City Schools and was later appointed Managing Director of Food and Nutrition for Baltimore City Schools. His many years of experience as an entrepreneur, combined with his fascinating life experiences, bring an uncommon thread of realism to his material. His writing style has been called “uniquely visceral.” Womack’s love of writing has led him to the development of his next intriguing book entitled “Central Office”; which he promises will leave his readers craving for more. Mr. Womack holds a B.A. Degree in Philosophy from University of Maryland Baltimore County. WHAT HAPPENED TO REDWOOD GRILL Excerpt from novel “Redwood” by A. Rod Womack COTTON CLUB Residue from the previous snow fall still lined the sidewalks and curbs along Calvert Street. The brisk temperamental wind whistled through the concrete buildings along our corridor with urgency. I tightened the knit scarf around my neck bracing myself for the wind as I shuffled along the sidewalk towards the restaurant door. I was headed inside for a meeting with Shorty and John to plan out our Valentine week special. Last year we had a respectable Valentine week crowd. But this year we needed to exceed last year’s numbers to demonstrate the true success of the restaurant. Based on last year’s turnout for Valentine week, we knew space would be limited. Each table was valuable real estate. We’d been taking reservations for weeks. Duck, lamb, and steak were the specials. The price was unbeatable; a whopping $65 per couple for a three course meal. It included a small complementary bottle of champagne. We were booked solid for dinner three to four days leading up to Valentine’s night. As to be expected, Valentine’s night was insanely busy. Though the food was exceptional, the cuisine wasn’t even the highlight of the evening. It was a special performance we arranged. Two months prior to Valentine’s Day I was introduced to a very talented young tap dancer. He earned his street cred as a student at Maryland Institute College of Arts (MICA) performing anywhere he found an audience. A sidewalk full of onlookers was as enticing as a stage. His friends simply called him “Tap”. It was how I referred to him as well. The perfect name for a young tap dancer with an evenkeel demeanor who embraced his talent with a unique sense of humbleness; a humbleness not often found in young artists. When we met he provided me a spontaneous audition on the steps in front of an apartment building I owned at Wyanoke Ave. It was a spell bounding performance. This kid is really good, I thought. I knew I had to find some way to use him at the restaurant. Valentine’s Day proved to be the perfect opportunity. We decided to hire Tap and another rising young star---a trumpeter and fellow graduate of MICA named Dontae Winslow to collaborate on a jazzy duet for the dinner. Both were in their early twenties, but Dontae had already toured and performed with big names all over the country. Names like Winton Marsalis and Stevie Wonder were just a couple of artists he had already shared the stage with and he was just getting started. The plan was simple---Tap would dance as Dontae played his trumpet. Both young artist needed exposure and we wanted to do something totally out of the box. So we quickly set the plan in motion. Once the two agreed to collaborate the rest was downhill. Cleve and I sat down with them to discuss ideas, but they didn’t need us. Once they connected, the creative juices began to flow. What they came up with was nothing short of brilliant. When they explained what they wanted to do we initially thought we’d need to have an entire stage built, which we’d done for other performer in the past like Kim Waters when he performed at the Grill. However, the performance would only last about twenty to thirty minutes, so that wouldn’t be cost effective. Instead Cleve and I came up with a solution. And by Valentine’s night the plan was falling right into place. Excerpt from novel “Redwood” by A. Rod Womack Dontae and Tap needed a hard surface in order to maximize the effect of their performance; preferably wood. However, the floors in the dining area were carpeted. So we decided to lay three quarter inch tongue and grove plywood planks over the carpet along the entire thirty foot run of the four foot wide aisle which separated the booths. We then taped the seams. As Dontae played Tap would tap dance his way up and down the aisle; within arm’s length of tables and booths. I admit that night my stomach was crawling with butterflies. We’d pulled off lots of cool things at the Grill, but nothing quite like this. The performance was scheduled to start around 7 pm. But these guys were artists and artists are notoriously late. So I figured 7 pm would be more like 7:30. For most of the patrons, outside of family and close friends, details of the performance was a total surprise. At 7:13 Dontae strutted through the front door toting a black trumpet case. He dipped into the stairwell down into the lower level where Tap was waiting. He apologized for being late as he approached me. Then he rested his case on my desk and removed the brass trumpet. It was polished to a shiny clean finish and glinted in the reflection of the light. I was slightly less nervous, but the butterflies were still fluttering. The lights in the dining room were already dimmed, but we dimmed them a bit more, prompting the loud chatter to suddenly hush into subtle murmurs. Dontae stood silently at the base of the stairs. Anticipation swept through me as I rushed up the stairs to catch a glimpse from top side and to signal to tap that Dontae was ready. Suddenly, Dontae lifted his muted horn to his lips and blew a slow melody that sounded as soothing as a poem. As he played, he calmly climbed the stairs, coming to a stop once he reached the top; where his sound erupted into a set of finely orchestrated riffs, hitting note after note with Miles Davis like precision. His timing and space between notes were reminiscent of Mile’s bebop sound, full of measure and introspective scope. In the mid 1940’s Mile’s trumpet complimented the electrifying and complex arrangements of the great saxophonist Charlie Parker. However, instead of Davis and Parker, it was Tap and Dontae Winslow. The duo was classic. Winslow’s demeanor and improvisation reminded me of why I love the trumpet sound so much. It’s always been one of my favorite instruments; especially when the instrument is muted. Now even the subtle murmurs hushed to a deafening silence. Everybody was mesmerized---including me. Tap, wearing a black fedora, was seated nonchalantly at the rear of the restaurant. He rose to his feet and began to tap in synch to Dontae’s trumpet. It was like magic. I looked around the room catching glimpses of people’s reactions. Our patrons were a mixed age group of young and old. I’m sure it took some of the older patrons back to an era long past when Baltimore was the harbinger of the great jazz tradition. But that night was more like Harlem’s Cotton Club than Baltimore’s Royal The- atre. In the streets Tap was well known, but beyond the streets he was virtually unknown. It was clear that he and Dontae were a winning combination. Dontae continued to play as he walked towards the bar. Suddenly he lowered the trumpet from his lips, allowing nothing to be heard except the sounds of clicks from Tap’s shoes. For twenty or thirty seconds Tap dazzled the crowd with a gritty stylish flair, before Dontae raised his trumpet to accompany him again. When I first met Tap he told me that he had been tap dancing since he was a child. It surely showed. His performance began at the back of the restaurant. But by the time the performance was done he had danced his way along the entire length of the hardwood planking. Every click, tap, and slide was amplified by the acoustics of the dome-shaped ceiling which allowed the sound to reverberate. “Tap, t..t…tap, click, click, click, tap, tap...slide, click-clack, clack click, click, click…….”. He reached in his pocket and tossed a handful of sand across the wood to accent the sound of his shoes sliding back and forth. The harder Dontae played, the harder Tap danced and the more excited the crowd grew. The cheers could be heard in the lower level prompting some of the dinners downstairs to come up to get a peek. A crowd formed around the bar. They continued to cheer. Then, a performance which in my mind couldn’t get any better, somehow did. It reached a climactic moment when Dontae and Tap exchanged folly, (a kind of exciting call and response like preachers do with their congregation). Dontae played a few notes and stopped----then Tap would click and tap a few times and stop. Dontae would play a few more notes and Tap would tap a few more times. This exchange went back and forth until it reached an unforgettable crescendo. The entire performance only lasted about twenty minutes, though it seemed much longer. Outside might have been freezing but inside the Grill was on fire. The energy was electrifying. Interestingly enough, most of the performance was impromptu; the two had done very little rehearsing. It was further confirmation of just how gifted the two young artists were. Almost as quickly as the performance began it ended, with a room full of cheering people bringing it to a close. The house lights were raised as the two performers slipped back downstairs where they met us in the office. We congratulated them. The performance surpassed anything we had imagined. It was almost magical. Of course, we invited the two back to repeat the performance anytime they wanted. For the rest of the night we were inundated with people asking questions about the duo. They wanted to know how or when they could see the two perform again. Unfortunately, we didn’t have an answer. We weren’t sure if we’d ever get the two together again. The success of that night was pivotal because it helped us understand how much we could stretch the boundaries of the entertainment we provided. We proved that we didn’t have to stick to the typical jazz or blues format. People were thirsty for something different, something compelling, and something memorable---that’s what we gave them. sharpdressed The Flywire 40 www.BaltimoreComedy.com Visit Our New Location 5625 O’Donnell Street Baltimore, MD 21224 410-547-7798 In the Best Western Hotel at the Travel Plaza inside the former Toby’s Dinner Theatre EVERY WEEKEND IT’S LYAO AT THE BALTIMORE COMEDY FACTORY R A H E E M D E V A U G H N Saturday, September 20, 2014 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Towson Courthouse Patriots Plaza 400 Washington Avenue, Towson, MD 21204 A Special Tribute Honoring Cathy Hughes Free Health & Wellness Screenings, Financial information, Historical Exhibits, Hero/ Shero Awards honoring our Military, Children’s Champion Zone, Line Dancing, Stepping, Arts & Crafts, Food, Fashion Show, Gospel Music, Informational Booths, local artists and so much more! Diddy’s “Making The Band”. Although she was subdued from the reality show by the struggle of her father’s diagnosis of prostate cancer and early signs of dementia, her talent was still destined for success, which she earnestly grappled for. The Grammy award-winning producer, Rich Harrison, found Brave’s vocal innocence and talent captivating and signed her under Columbia Records. Having later been dropped from the record label, she was devastated by the sound of Beyoncé’s “Crazy In love,” a track that was originally created for her while recording with Harrison. Determined to follow her soul and pursue her musical dreams, Brave moved to Los Angeles. After three years of development and hard work, Brave found herself in front of Rich Harrison once again; however, this time with the idea of an all-girl group which she named “Richgirl.” Brave, the soul creator of the group, took the lead in landing “Richgirl” a major deal with Jive Records. The group instantly created billboard hits including their first singles “24’s” and “He Ain’t Wit Me Now.” Having gained the attention of followers +feature E WILLIAMS REENE including Beyoncé Knowles, in 2009 Brave and the group toured as the opening act for Beyoncé’s “I am Sasha Fierce” tour. “Richgirl’s” success continued with national performances including the main acts for the Burger King Summer tour and T-Mobile tour, succeeded by the release of their third single “Swagger Right” featuring Rick Ross and Fabulous. Brave continued to encircle her diligence within the world of the performing arts when casted in lead roles of theater performances including Veronica in “The Diary of a Catholic School Girl”, and Meredith in “Lady Love”. However, in 2011, with the loss of her father Joseph Williams, manager Maynard C. Vigil, and break-up of the group “Richgirl,” Brave stronger than ever, distended to the verity of her name. Brave journeyed to locate the boxing ring as a battleground between her tranquility and feelings of anguish derived from such major losses in her life. For weeks she trained persistently; however, after overcoming a near defining injury from her forth-competitive match that practically jeopardized her musical career, Brave began to prioritize the importance of her born destiny. Now in 2014.... Bigger, Better and Braver.... Brave is working on her own project forming an iron-clad team, writing her own songs and overseeing treatments of her videos, while being one hundred percent dedicated towards controlling her own career destiny. She is tenacious in her pursuit of dominating the performing arts industry with securing roles in both television and film such as the lead role in Omarion’s M.I.A. music video produced by Universal Music, the feature of Bambi on BET’s “The Get Up”, and a featured singer in TLC’s “Crazy Sexy Cool” film on VH1. She continues to strive beyond what’s expected of her Braveness, by also sanctioning time for those less fortunate through Associated Black Charities (ABC), as well as her own personal philanthropic missions. Remaining ceaseless and unremitting, with the voice and fuel to light up a city, an independent, unstoppable, fire-driven Brave is now unleashing her complete self on an upcoming EP, “FEARLESS” The Flywire 63 +trendsetter The Flywire 70 URSULA BATTLE ALL THE WORLD IS A STAGE by Nikia Vaughan Gossip, death, love affairs and conspiracy? Sounds like Tyler Perry’s newest original TV series right? Well, playwright Ursula V. Battle’s newest Stage Play “The ‘New’ Teachers Lounge” could definitely give Mr. Perry some competition. Baltimore native Ursula Battle wears many hats. However, right now her plays are becoming her crown. A graduate of Walbrook High School, Coppin State University and University of Baltimore, Ursula is a journalist and also has a Public Relations background. Ursula says that she has a God given gift of writing. About 20 years ago, Ursula and her mother went to see Shelly Garrett’s stage play, Beauty Shop and her mother said she should consider writing a play. Ursula’s mother, an educator, thought it would be a great idea to compose a play of what goes on in the teachers’ lounge. Being the daughter of an educator, Ursula had firsthand experiences of what went on in the lounge. In 2002, ”The Teachers’ Lounge” debuted at Coppin State University. In the very near future, Ursula sees her plays going national. She would love to go on the road. There has been some interest in creating a “The ‘New’ Teachers’ Lounge” tour. Ursula admires Tyler Perry, however, she believes we need a female playwright. Ursula has this to offer to aspiring playwrights, thespians and directors, “Be persistent and just do it,” she encourages. “There are many challenges that come with the territory, but stay the course as it’s very easy to become unfocused.” Baltimore, Ursula says, is a tough market. Therefore, she walks by faith and not by sight. Ursula says “Don’t share your ideas. Unfortunately, people will take them and run with your creativity as their own. Surround yourself with positive people and stay in your lane. Hire professionals who have a gift who also share your vision.” Ursula has more productions in the future including “Discord in the Choir/ A Church Comedy” and “My Big Fat Ghetto Fabulous Wedding.” You can get more information about Ursula and her plays at www.battlestageplays.com The Flywire 72 +trendsetter Michele Amira Text: M.E. Crump “Last night a Deejay saved my life,” was the lyrics of a popular song back in day. So many people, especially club heads and the lovesick could relate. The perfect song, the right lyrics, harmony, sound and tempo can literally soothe you or pump you up. For hip-hop journalist Michele Amira, her love of hip-hop literally saved her as a child. Now the music she submerged herself while battling unimaginable hurdles is now the central part of her career. Maryland resident Michele Amira couldn’t read or write until she was 11 years old. Growing up she battled a chronic illness along with serious learning disabilities. Hip-hop was her saving grace and soundtrack to her life. Once she learned to read and write at eleven years old she wrote a novel. What an impressive jump? From Illiterate to novelist. The book, of course, featured a supersheroe and her favorite music. She was only 14 years old when she was contracted to write Sparkle—the same age as Diamond in the story. Sparkle Michele Amira shown here with Big Sean in Detroit. She joined is based on the author’s own struggles and victories, him in a back to school giveaway for Detroit Public School students. fighting a rare life threatening illness, confronting bullying, dealing with school and just being a teen. Fast forward to now, the book is a reality. This summer The Music in Me Foundation International announced Sparkle as part of the organization’s “Rap” on Reading Series. In addition, hip-hop’s chart topping recording artist, Big Sean, gave his stamp of approval and wrote its foreword. Recently, she joined Big Sean on his back to school event in Detroit. The Sean Anderson Foundation made back to school for Detroit Public School students such a positive experience by providing them with book bags stuffed with supplies by Office Depot and The Music in Me Foundation International “Rap” on Reading Book Series--The Bully Blues and Sparkle. Today, Michele is a professional hip-hop journalist, radio DJ, stand-up comedian and student. She is also vegan dancer with a love of hair products, hoop earrings, hip-hop, and New York pizza! When she’s not writing about what’s hot in hip-hop, she’s talking about it on her hip-hop radio show, The Mecca, at University of Maryland where she is an English major. Hip Hop Superstar Big Sean Endorses Young Adult Novel, Sparkle, as a “Must Read” She has been published in The New York Times, The Source Magazine, MTV’s Pardon My Blog, JVibe Magazine, Fran Drescher’s Cancerschmancer’s “We The Future” blog and other notable publications. She is the youngest filmmaker to be screened at The Festival de Cannes in France. She is also the recipient of the Spirit of Anne Frank Student Award and featured in Bethesda Magazine as one of the Nation’s Top Teens. Most of all, she loves to inspire others to “sparkle.” Look for Sparkle, which is scheduled to hit the market soon with the release of the foundation’s lastest song, featuring hip-hop recording artists Don Trunk (BaltiMotown) and Uptown XO (Secret Society Music). This young author is a blossoming, high spirited and brave young woman who enjoys life to the fullest. Her future is so bright it sparkles.
