Review of Meeting 5/18/10

President Mary Anne conducted our meeting in a “cozy” main floor room at the
Hyatt Hotel on a cool rainy spring day.
Jake Slagle led us with a thoughtful prayer
and Dick Holland led six strong Songbirds
in greeting members and guests. President
Mary Anne inducted Fang Mitchell, coach
of the Coppin State University basketball
team, as a new member of Baltimore Rotary.
Christine Walsh did double duty by presenting both Baltimore Rotary news and
welfare and introducing our speaker,
Wanda Draper. Ms. Draper is Director of
Programming and Public Affairs for
WBAL-TV. Prior to her remarks, Wanda
was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by
President Rishebarger. Wanda, who has
spent 37 years in the media industry, advised us that the basics of television is that
“what the public watches is what continues to be broadcast”. She also informed
us of the second WBAL-TV local channel,
WBAL Plus, which carries local weather
and high school sports. The main portion
of her remarks concentrated on her involvement with WBAL’s community
work. She explained how the WBAL
Holiday Kids Campaign evolved into joining with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree
program to help needy children on
a year round basis. Over the last
four months they have contributed
$1,000,000 to organizations that
help Baltimore children. Much of
the funding acts as seed money and
is a catalyst to stimulate and attract
other donors. For example, a program to provide eleven scholarships
to attend private schools ultimately
developed into funding for 21 participants. Another program will allow 135 homeless children at St.
Vincent DePaul of Baltimore to attend camp this summer. Another
gift of $25,000 inspired over
$100,000 of other contributions to
help East Baltimore infants and
toddlers. Wanda commented how
heartwarming and inspirational it is
to see the faces of those that are
helped.
On a similar note, Katie Lyons
from the Westport School both
thanked us and told us how well the
baseball team that Baltimore Rotary
sponsored is doing. Most of the
youngsters have never had the
chance to play before and all are
learning the joy of playing baseball
plus much more about responsibility, teamwork and commitment.
The team won their first game.

Baltimore Rotarians have long been known as an active group in civic affairs as well as athletics. Our club has had a sports committee since the
early 1920’s. At that time there were 3 major sports in which our members
were active. Can you name them?
Here are some clues:

All 3 involved the use of a ball
Two were individual sports and one was a team sport
The first two were probably easy for you—Golf and Tennis. But the third,
and by far the most popular in the 1920’s to the 1940’s was Bowling! In
fact, by 1940, bowling was of such interest to our members that the highest
team and individual scores were published in the Spinning Wheel regularly.
Awards and prizes were often given to the best bowlers in the club.

Born in Dundalk...Just turned 40...Began as an agate clerk and gopher in 1984 at The News American...
Sportswriter and music critic at The Evening Sun from 1986 through 1992...Started doing sports radio
with Kenny Albert in 1992 on WITH-AM 1230...Obtained WNST-AM 1570 in 1998...Was nationally
syndicated on 425 stations via Sporting News Radio from 1999 through 2001...Retired from daily radio
in 2004 to C.E.O. and do business development for WNST...Led walkout of 2,000 Orioles fans at Camden Yards in the "Free The Birds" movement...Became partners with Brian Billick and began WNST.

WNST originally began in May 1998 as a dream come true for local sports talk show, “Nasty” Nestor
Aparicio, who began his radio career on December 13, 1991, when he was asked by current Fox TV legend Kenny Albert to co-host a show on WITH-AM 1230.
The radio station launched as “The Station With Balls,” Baltimore’s first and only all-sports radio station
on Aug. 1, 1998. After 14 months on the air, Aparicio lost his lease on Oct. 1, 1999, and was evicted
from WNST AM 1570 for almost a year but on Sept. 10, 2000, Aparicio and a group of local partners
purchased WNST-AM 1570 outright and have been in control ever since.
In August 2008, Aparicio brought together another group of local business owners led by former Ravens
Super Bowl-winning head coach Brian Billick to buy out Nasty 1570 Sports LLC to form WNST Sports
Media, which combines the brand of the radio station into a full service, around the world website at
WNST.net.
The staff of WNST are all true Baltimoreans, giving a perspective that none of the other local media outlets could possibly have. Memories of the old Orioles, the Colts, 33rd Street — not to mention the innate
passion for Baltimore and for Maryland that only true fans can have.

Oct. 2 & 3 at the Frederick Fairgrounds
Frederick’s Oktoberfest is an event rich in tradition and history!
Bratwurst, Oktoberfest bier, German wines, dancing, music,
children’s events and much more! And it all benefits Frederick
County charities. Spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Carroll
Creek and the Rotary Club of Fredericktowne, this annual event
not only promotes cultural exchange, but it also supports both
clubs’ efforts in the community to raise thousands of dollars for
area non-profits. What’s not to like?
