IMPORTANT NOTICE
s
On Thursday 22nd May we will be
observing “Low Energy” day, when
everyone at school is encouraged to use
the absolute minimum amount of
electricity. To help make our pupils
aware of electricity usage we would like
each child to bring a torch to school on
the day as well as ‘blankies’ and ‘hotties’.
We will be switching off all lights and
heaters. Please support us in this informative, fun activity!

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
We are happy to announce that Mapuso Ramotso, a qualified teacher,
has been appointed in a full time position as a Teacher’s
Assistant/Relief Teacher. Ms Ramotso has been associated with
Crossroads School for many years as a facilitator and is well known
and liked by staff and pupils alike. We wish her a long and happy
stay at Crossroads.
GENERAL
EXTRA MURALS
The afternoon activities got off to a good start last week and for
the most part, ran smoothly. Please remember to check the extramural list (which is posted on the d6 Communicator and our website,
www.crossroadsschool.co.za ) for the times that activities end, and
ensure that your children are collected on time.
Should you wish to place children in the new Aftercare facility,
which is run privately on the Crossroads premises, please contact
Joanne directly on 082 336 8768. Various rates apply and Joanne is
prepared to take ad-hoc learners if for some reason parents are
delayed on a particular day.
SOCCER
The soccer season is in full swing and our players are extremely
excited and motivated. We are pleased to see an increase in the
number of girls participating this year. Unfortunately, our girls
SOCCER
cannot be accommodated by all schools in the league so there is no
guarantee that they will be able to play in matches. We will liaise
with other schools to see whether or not an all-girl soccer match can
be arranged.
Good luck to our Soccer
teams for their first
match of the season!
The first soccer match of the season takes place against the
German School on Wednesday 21st. The U9 & 10 teams will play at
home and the U11 and Open teams will play away.
German School – 11 San Souci Road, Parktown. Tel: 011 726 6220
The school bus will leave at 14:00 and should return by 16:15.
The U9 home match should end at 14:30 and the U10 at 15:00.
Please ensure that all indemnity forms are returned prior to the
match. The soccer uniform is the Crossroads white T-shirt, black
shorts and long white socks. Shin pads are compulsory for all soccer
matches.

Core Value Term 2
Environmental Awareness
“You cannot get through a single
day without having an impact on the
world around you. What you do
makes a difference, and you have
to decide what kind of difference
you want to make” Jane Goodall
C.E.A.
We will be concentrating on the Building Blocks for MAKING
MEANING of an experience. MEANING is the key element in all
successful problem-solving and learning experiences that involve
social and emotional situations. These blocks include: Working
Memory; Making Comparisons; Getting the Main Idea; Thought
Integration; Connecting Events
Starting with WORKING MEMORY, we will be exploring all the
facets of this Building Block. This includes using memory processes effectively; clearing distracting
thoughts and feelings from the working memory; focusing energy on recalling information stored in the
brain; combining new and old ideas; storing newly integrated thoughts in the brain; using all the space
available in the working memory.
IDEAS FOR BRIDGING INTO EVERYDAY LIFE
Remembering times of TV programmes; Remembering family birthdays; Learning phone numbers of
family and friends; Learning and remembering safety rules: home, road, bicycle, skateboard,
rollerblades; Recalling important facts when doing homework and studying for tests.
Please note that more information regarding the use of these Blocks and Tools is available
on the d6 Communicator – Resources.
WINTER KNITTING DRIVE
With winter well and truly on its way, we would once again like to start making
blanket squares, vests, baby caps etc. for the less privileged. If you would like to
do some knitting the patterns are available from the office (squares and Mother
Teresa vest patterns below). If you would like to contribute to this charity drive,
but are not a knitter, we would appreciate donations of double knit yarn for others
to knit with. We also require volunteers to sew the squares into blankets – no
knitting skills required!
PATTERN FOR SQUARES

My School Card
Thank you to those families who support us by using their MySchool cards. Please continue to use
these cards as this generates valuable funds. Application forms are available from the office should
anyone need to apply for a card or to update their details.
Cartridge Recycling
Cartridge recycling is a sustainable way to reduce your community’s carbon footprint. In association
with the MySchool project we collect cartridges on an ongoing basis for recycling. Please bring all
used cartridges to Ronel in the office and help raise funds for our school.
