Classic Cars take over Clare
Hundreds of Classic Cars rolled into Clare last Thursday when the
annual US-27 Motor Tour arrived on its trek from Coldwater to
Cheyboygan. Their slogan, “Back in The Day, It Was the Way,” seemed
to bring back the good old days when the classics filled up McEwan
Street and rock and roll classics blasted from the speakers. The tour
spent the night in Clare and then early Friday, they were off again to
spend a few hours visiting in Harrison on their trip thru Michigan.

Harrison takes to streets

The summer of 2015
could well go down as
one of the best for Harrison in recent years. After
getting off to a slow start
with cool temperatures old
mother-nature delivered a
home run providing great
weather for the bulk of
the summer season, this
proved the case at the annual Harrison Street Fair
August 21, & 22. People
from all over the area as
well as downstate packed
the down town for two
days of fun and shopping.
Friday’s opening day
was a motor-head’s paradise during a visit from the
US 27 Car tour. Fresh off
spending Thursday night
in Clare the tour headed
for Harrison with over
300 unique and vintage
vehicles from days gone
bye. Even non car buffs
couldn’t resist checking
out the shining road of
vehicles.
From the Surrey House
south to the Library on
First street, it was packed
with vendors selling everything from farm fresh
produce to multicolored
dresses. In the kids area
face painting, fishing, rock
wall climbing, a bounce
house, crafts and a petting
zoo kept youngsters happy.
Across from the Library
Chuck Ulch and others
showed off their collection
of unique vintage snowmobiles to several visitors
who chatted about the good
old days of snowmobiling
remembering when Harrison was a top destination
for sledders.
The 5K run was dominated by the Lockwood

In an email earlier this
week, former Clare Superintendent Greg McMillan
questioned why Clare Superintendent Doniel Pummell resigned recently.
Pummell’s resignation,
citing the board’s desire to
“go another direction with
superintendent leadership.” She wrote, “I have
respectfully resigned my
position.” In her letter
Pummell said her “last day
as Clare Superintendent is
August 31.”
At the August 18 Clare
Board of Education meeting, her resignation was
unanimously accepted,
and former interim Pioneer Principal, and retired
Meridian Superintendent
Doug Fillmore was hired
to serve in the position for
the coming school year
or until the board hires a
replacement for Pummell.
When questioned about
what led to Pummell leaving the position after the
meeting, Board President
Tom Weaver said he could
only say, “It was a mutual
agreement between Ms.
Pummell and the Board.”
In his email to the editor of the Review, McMillan asked, “What has
happened to investigative
reporting? As a community member and tax
payer I would like to know
why the superintendent of
schools in Clare resigned.”
He continued, “Why
wasn’t she non-renewed
during this past spring’s
annual superintendent’s
evaluation? What was
the outcome of that
professional evaluation
by our school board? If
they failed to non-renew
her this past spring, she
would still have a year or
two on her contract. The
board typically provides
their superintendent with
a three year contract. I
know because I held that
position. If the board
did not non-renew her in
the spring, which is quite
obvious, how much did
they expend of the school
district’s fund to pay off
her contract? If in fact
that school district and
board are transparent, we
should have been provided
that information as well.”
McMillan also wrote,
“Why is our board
president so happy to
have forced a superintendent out and employing
a ‘rent a superintendent?’ How much of the school
district’s budget will be
expended on his salary? We should know this information. Please do some
investigative reporting and
identify the answers to
these questions. The community, tax payers deserve
the truth, the facts. That
occurred when the Clare
Sentinel was in operation. I know; I was once a
superintendent here.”
When McMillan’s
questions were asked of
Weaver, he responded,
“You have always been
fair and honest with your
reporting. I would strongly
disagree with Mr. McMillian’s statement that you
don’t do any investigative
reporting. In this email I
will attempt to answer the
questions that I can.”
He continued, “Doni’s
evaluation wasn’t done
this spring because we,
(the board and superintendent) decided to move her
evaluation to November.
The reason for doing this
was that, with elections
moving to November,
any newly elected board
members wouldn’t have
time to properly do an
evaluation after only being on the board for such
a short period of time.
We felt if we moved the
evaluation to November,
any new board members
would have almost a full
year on the board before
going through their first
evaluation of the superintendent.”
Concerning Pummell’s contract, Weaver
said, “Doni didn’t have
a three year contract. We
gave her three years on
her initial hiring to give
her some level of security
because she was uprooting her family and moving
to Clare. After that, her
contract was for two years
at a time.”
“We did reach a
settlement agreement with
Doni,” he added. “This
board takes great pride in
being transparent. We are
not trying to hide anything
concerning this change
in leadership. According
to the agreement between
Doni and the district,
the agreement must be
FOIA’ed through the
Central Office. We must
give Doni three days written notice before we can
release any details. Any
deviations from this would
result in our violating the
terms of the agreement.”
Weaver said, “We, as a
board, were not “happy”
about having to change
superintendents at this
time. What we were happy
about, was being able to
find a person like Doug
Fillmore to take over
our district for the current school year. He is a
man of integrity that I am
convinced will move our
district forward in a positive manner. As a former
superintendent, he has
worked with much larger
bond issues than the one
we are currently embarking on. Having worked
with us previously, he is
also very familiar with our
district. He is the perfect
choice to step in at this
time to guide us through
this process.”
He concluded, “This
board has proven over
and over again that we are
very frugal with the taxpayers’ money. With the
help of our great staff of
administrators, teachers,
support staff, custodians,
maintenance workers, bus
drivers, booster groups,
and community members
we have kept Clare at the
forefront of education.”

“It would be a mistake
to give up on Ms. Seymour
because of this conviction” She concluded. “Law
enforcement is a demanding profession, one that
has above-average rates of
depression, suicide, and
substance abuse. Ms. Seymour is a fine young officer
with a bright career ahead
of her. By dealing with
the issues that led to this
conviction, Ms. Seymour
will now better manage the
stress that the inevitable
cost of protecting and serving the public. I believe
this experience will only
strengthen her.”
Undersheriff Miedzianowski said, “I think she
deserves another chance.
Obviously she made a
mistake, but she works
hard and genuinely cares
about people. Just because
it didn’t work out for her
here, it doesn’t mean it
can’t work out for her
somewhere else.
Clare City Manager Ken
Hibl said, “I don’t believe
the measure or character
of an individual should
be based on one mistake,
but rather the individual’s
performance record and
what the individual does to
correct the mistake. In the
case of Officer Seymour,
her performance record is
impeccable with the exception of this error. And
she immediately accepted
responsibility for her error
by submitting her resignation and apologizing individually and publicly to
the local law enforcement
community for her error
– which speaks volumes
about her character.”
He continued, “During my tenure with the
City, we’ve had a standing practice of offering an
individual a second chance
if the mistake they make
is not so egregious that
it would offend or harm
public trust and confidence
and if they accept responsibility for their error(s)
and demonstrate they’ve
learned from that error.
Officer Seymour has been
offered a second chance.
Her performance from here
forward will determine
whether our decision wise
or unwise. But based
upon what I’ve seen of her
performance and character
thus far, I am confident the
decision was a wise one.”
Sheriff John Wilson
said, “She was a good
officer. She did a good job
for me.”

Several county employees ask BOC for raises
By Rosemary Horvath
Correspondent
Clare County Commissioners are wrestling with
rewarding elected officials
and department heads salary increases.
The next budget session is tentatively set for 9
a.m. Sept. 2. An appeals
session when department heads are invited to
plead their case for extra
money is 9 a.m. Sept. 9.
Check the county website
for any changes.
Commissioner Jim Gelios expressed at a recent
budget session earlier this
month he doesn›t want
increases piecemealed
with some now, others
later. «Not saying they
don›t deserve it,» he said.
Commissioner Don
David seemed to push for
immediate action, realizing the increase would
be drawn from the fund
balance. «We can›t keep
putting off employees,» he
said, adding that Sheridan
Township in his district
is concerned the county
equalization director will
look for a higher-paying
job elsewhere.
Director Kim Halis›s
current salary is $43,860.
She received a two percent
increase in 2014, as did all
county employees.

2016. County Administrator Tracy Byard recommended $5,000. Commissioner David suggested
$10,000.
Commissioner Dale
Majewski suggested creating a tiered system when
giving salaries. He opposes
relying on the fund balance
to cover increases and he
doubts if increases can happen all at once.
Lori Ware, director of
community development
and senior services whose
salary does not derive from
the general fund, pointed
out county finances are in
good shape and the fund
balance is at 14 percent.
Giving a lesson on
budgeting, Ware reminded
commissioners even
though a budget is balanced with fund balance
dollars, the county typically doesn›t spend the sum
allotted. Consequently,
the fund balance grows at
the end of the fiscal year
because most departments
end with unspent revenue.
«The budget is a working document. By law you
balance the budget by Sept.
30,» she said, highlighting
that line items in department budgets don’t end the
fiscal year at zero. Revenue
exceeding expenses settle
into the fund balance sum
too.
Department heads
may plan budgets anticipating «the big thing» happening, such as an unexpected
expense that may not occur.
«Department heads do it
monthly to meet auditor
requirements,» Ware noted,
but money from this line
item ends up in the fund
balance as well.
Both Ware and Byard
stressed county spending
has not exceeded revenue.
«Two years ago
the county was in the
black with a $200,000
surplus because taxes come
in late,» Byard said. «In
2014 the surplus exceeded
$400,000. Jail revenue
(from bed rentals) has
exceeded estimates.»
Byard added that no
money was taken out of the
$1.4 million fund balance
in 2014. Instead, surplus
was added.
«Then why are we borrowing $1 million to fix
this building?» Commissioner Gelios queried. «The
sheriff wants to remodel
the jail because of a lack of
space in holding and booking and wants other
improvements. We need to
discuss our costs.»
Sheriff John Wilson
earns an annual salary of
$57,324.77. His request
for 2016 is nearly $9700 of
which the board may lower to under $7700.
Wilson has taken on
duties of supervising
Central Dispatch and,
more recently, the Information Technology department. Commissioners
learned his salary increase
could be covered by the
911 millage.
Commissioner Gelios
opposed using millage dollars, saying «I don›t think
voters passing 911 millage
meant for it to go for a salary increase. The county›s
economy is always one of
the lowest.»
Commissioner Samantha Pitchford noted
Wilson›s requested
increase amounts to a 13
percent hike.
Included in Byard›s
balanced budget is a seven
percent increase for elected
officials and department
heads. Upping that to 10
percent translates to an
estimated $75,000 with retirement and fringe benefits
included.
Departments are
saddled with more unfunded mandates issued by the
Michigan Legislature. One
example is the cumbersome new law for Freedom
of Information Act requests
which involve more paperwork and lower fees even
though the work fulfilling
requests has increased.
Board Chairman Jack
Kleinhardt asked Byard
to recommend an amount
the county can add to expenditures.
In other business,
the county board swiftly
approved budgets for 40
non-general fund budgets.
Commissioner Majewski abstained from voting
because his wife Carol
Majewski is the nutrition director for Senior
Services. Among the
«Other Funds» are budgets
for Road Fund, Friend of
the Court, Conceal Pistol
Licensing, Drug Enforcement, Clare Water System,
USDA Loan Debt Funds,
Drain Fund, Veterans Trust,
Senior Citizens, Community Development departments and Airport Fund.
Estimated revenues total $18,922,637 compared
to estimated expenditures
of $18,981,187.

Excruciating pain is bummer
Here’s to the Good Old Days!
It’s the time of year
when we produce our 50’s
Plus Lifestyles special
section. As one of those
people that hit the 50
mark a while back, I look
forward to editing stories
that tell me how I can live
better and longer.
My experience is once
you reach 50 and beyond,
health becomes a much
bigger issue than when you
were 20, or, 30, or even
40. For some of us that
our lucky, however, health
issues are still several years
away.
I have never experienced the chronic back
pain, or gave much thought
to replacing a hip or knee.
I can’t tell you the last time
I missed a day of work,
because I haven’t. Much to
my chagrin though, I have
noticed my sight weakening and have worn “readers” for several years from
now.
Even though I spent
many an hour in the dental
chair as a kid, my teeth
are not as good as I would
like them to be. The last
couple of months I’ve had
throbbing pain on the left
side of the mouth. I went to
a dentist in Alabama, and
because I couldn’t pinpoint
where the pain was coming from, he took xrays
of my lower left teeth. He
proclaimed me fine and
couldn’t understand my
pain.
The pain returned, thus
I went to a second dentistthis one in Michigan, for
a second opinion. She too
said my teeth were fine. I
began to think my threshold for pain wasn’t as great
as I thought. I began telling
my wife I was the proverbial “wimp.”
Well about 10 days ago
This week we have something special for all of the
“oldsters” out there – our annual 50 Plus section with
loads of news and ads full of great bargains for those
of us entering our “Senior Years.” Since I joined that
exclusive club several years ago, and with that in mind,
I found, and added a bit of my own experiences to a little
article from the Internet that I saved a while back. It really brings back fond memories of those good old days…
the pain returned with a
vengeance. The excruciating pain didn’t allow for
much sleep. I again went
to the Alabama dentist.
This time I told him to xray
the top, left portion of my
mouth, and lo and behold
one of my very back teeth
had a crater with exposed
nerve and infection.
He couldn’t pull the
tooth immediately so he
gave me pain killer and
anti-biotics and told me
to come back in 10 days
and he would perform oral
surgery.
As I packed to drive
to Michigan the next day,
I wished for a stronger
pain killer. The throbbing
wouldn’t stop. As I’m
making the 850 mile drive,
alone, in my small car, my
thoughts wouldn’t leave my
mouth and how it pained.
Finally the guy who never
stops unless his vehicle is
on empty, made a pit stop
in Berea, Kentucky. I just
had to find a pharmacy and
purchase a bottle of Motrin
or Advil.
With new pain killers in
hand, that actually quelled
the pain for a couple hours
a time, anyways I completed my trip to Clare.
After attending a wedding
on Saturday, and spending
time fishing with my son
on Sunday, the excruciating
pain, which had never really left, was getting more
unpleasant by the hour.
I made an emergency appointment with my Michigan dentist to get the darn
thing pulled. I couldn’t
stand it anymore, and after
taking a look at the mess of
a tooth, she agreed. I didn’t
know this, but they give
you a list of horrible things
that can happen with oral
surgery, and make you sign
off for liability purposes as
well. I thought it would be a
simple procedure, but after
reading all the warnings, I
began to worry.
The dentist, after numbing
my mouth, began to pull the
tooth. After seeing the concerned look on my dentist’s
face, I knew this was not going to be easy. She explained
the tooth she wanted to pull
was attached to a wisdom
tooth, and when she went to
pull it the tooth cracked.
So now I had to have two
teeth pulled and one was
cracked. Jokingly the dentist
said “You get two pulled for
the price of one.” Then she
proceeded to say in all her
years of dental practice she
had never encountered this
problem. My worry level
went up a notch.
After what seemed like
an eternity of pulling and
cutting around the tooth and
then stitching the bloody
mess up, I was finished.
Although I was bleeding
profusely in my mouth and
through my nose for a couple
of hours, all is good the next
day. I know I haven’t eaten a
good meal in two weeks, and
really haven’t eaten anything
in a couple of days, so if
there’s a silver lining, I’m
sure I lost a few pounds.
The pain appears gone,
and my latest over 50 experience- having a tooth pulled
( in my case two) is now behind me. I have no idea what
back pain, a heart attack, or a
stroke is like, but I do know
I never want to experience
the pain of an abscessed
tooth ever again.

No matter what our
kids and the new generation think about us, WE
ARE AWESOME !!! OUR Lives are LIVING
PROOF !!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who
smoked, took aspirin, ate
blue cheese dressing, tuna
from a can, and didn’t get
tested for diabetes. Then, after that trauma,
we were put to sleep on our
tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored
lead-based paints.
We had no childproof
lids on medicine bottles,
locks on doors or cabinets,
and, when we rode our
bikes, we had baseball
caps, not helmets, on our
heads.
As infants and children,
we would ride in cars with
no car seats, no booster
seats, no seat belts, no air
bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.
Riding in the back of a
pick- up truck on a warm
day was always a special
treat.
We drank water from the
garden hose and not from
a bottle. We shared one soft drink
with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually
died from this. We ate tons of cookies,
cupcakes, white bread,
real butter, and bacon. We
drank Kool-Aid made with
real white sugar and we
weren’t overweight. WHY?
Because we were always
outside playing...that’s
why! We would leave home in
the morning and play all
day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights
came on. No one was able to
reach us all day, and, we
were OKAY. We would spend hours
building our go-carts out
of scraps and then ride
them down the hill, only
to find out we forgot the
brakes. After running into
the bushes a few times,
we learned to solve the
problem.
We did not have Smart
Phones or I-pads. There
were no video games, no
150+ channels on cable or
satelite, no video movies or
DVDs, no surround-sound
or CDs, no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and no Twitter
or Facebook to chat with
unseen friends.
WE HAD REAL
FRIENDS and we went
outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got
cut, broke bones and teeth,
and there were no lawsuits
from those accidents.
We would get spankings with wooden spoons,
switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child
services to report abuse.
We ate worms, and
mud pies made from dirt,
and the worms did not live
in us forever. We were given BB guns for
our 10th birthdays, 22 rifles
for our 12th, rode horses,
made up games with sticks
and tennis balls, and -although we were told it
would happen- we did not
put out very many eyes.
We took squirt guns and
cap pistols to school and no
one got expelled! We rode bikes or walked
to a friend’s house and
knocked on the door or
rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to
them. Little League had
tryouts and not everyone
made the team. Those who
didn’t had to learn to deal
with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent
bailing us out if we broke
the law or got in trouble
at school was unheard of.
They actually sided with
the law and believed the
teachers and administrators! These generations
have produced some of the
best risk-takers, problem
solvers, and inventors ever.
The past 50 to 85 years
have seen an explosion of
innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure,
success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal
with it all. If YOU are one of those
born between 1930 -1965,
CONGRATULATIONS!
We had the luck to grow
up as kids before the lawyers and the government
regulated so much of our
lives – all for our own good
of course. And although
today’s youngsters are
probably safer, do they
ever have as much fun as
we did back then?

The good news about
TEMPTATION
Yielding to temptation
can be costly. A moment of
weakness may bring years
of regret. It is dangerous to
take temptation lightly.
Moses led his people out
of their slavery in Egypt to
freedom. He endured their
complaining and criticism of his leadership and
prayed for them when their
destruction seemed imminent. But an outburst of
temper kept him from leading them into the Promised
Land.
David rose from the
sheepfold to the throne. He
was eminently successful
and is still thought of as his
nation’s greatest king. But
his affair with Bathsheba
brought him sorrow and
has tainted his reputation
through the ages.
Temptation is common
to all. And there is nothing
sinful or disgraceful about
being tempted. It is in
yielding to temptation that
we miss out on the best in
life.
One of the encouraging
things about temptation
is its universal sameness.
Every temptation that
comes our way has been

In order to give such

According to the Bible, He

One who loves us. The
famous preacher, Henry

Have you found yourself saying, “I just can’t

Do you think you lack the

Not true! When
tempted, we are all without

Don’t put off chat with teen
about underage drinking
With the school year beginning, most parents have
done all the obvious preparatory work. The school
supplies are purchased
before classes begin and the
few additional items that
always crop up are being
taken care of.
Likewise, most parents
have had several “talks”
with their children, especially if there have been
problems in the past or
the child is new to school.
There’s the “you must
behave” talk, the “do your
homework” talk and the “do
your best” talk.
The Clare County Communities That Care Coalition suspects there is one
talk you may not have had,
and that you should. That,
of course, is the “no underage drinking” talk.
It might be the one talk
that makes all the difference.
For some parents, drinking among teenagers is
the lesser of many other
possible evils. We hear of
parents buying alcohol for
their children and friends to
have parties. There are two
words for that. It’s “against
the law.”
The belief by some parents is that they can elicit a
promise from their teenager
only to drink at home or
another adult-supervised
gathering, thus the parent
will not have to worry about
drinking and driving.
The quality of that
promise ranks right up there
with “the dog ate my homework.” If you believe it you
are sure to be fooled.
Let us state it simply:
Teenagers, even the brightest and best among them,
often exhibit poor judgment. It is part of the maturing process. At times they
will act 25, at others they
will act 12 and the two may
come seconds apart.
It is risky enough as
an adult to imbibe before
you drive but most adults
are smart enough to know
anything more than a single
drink or two puts driving out
of consideration. A teenager
may not see it that way.
They may “be sure” they are
sober or that they can drive.
Such a mistake can be
deadly and it has been
deadly too often.
It would please us if we
never again had to read such
a story. Of all the bad news
that is printed, the loss of a
teenager at the bottom of a
bottle is about the worst.
Please, do your part to
see this doesn’t happen to
your family. Tell your teen
in no uncertain terms that
underage drinking will not
be tolerated and hold to that.
Will it absolutely prevent
it from happening? Of
course not. But it will lessen
the chances, we guarantee
you. Make this the first talk
of many? Do a check-in
with your kid about their
challenges and stressors. How are they coping? What
choices are they making? How do you help them live
life on life’s terms without turning to alcohol and
drugs? More than just say
no.
This is not the kind of
talk you want to be wishing
you’d had after it is too late.

Great Vanderbrook letters
Dear Editor:
I am writing to comment on the two wonderful letters regarding the
resignation of Dr. Robert
Vanderbrook in a recent
edition of the Review, from
Pat LaValley and Robert
Barker. They obviously
feel the same way about
Dr. Vanderbrook that my
husband Paul and I do, and
we only became patients
of Dr. Vanderbrook in
the last year. We were so
delighted to finally find a
doctor who was so caring
and tuned in to his patients,
and who took the time to
listen and explain, and we
were devastated to learn
that he was no longer with
the Mid-Michigan Medical
Center. What a great loss to
the community this is.
I echo Pat LaValley’s
sentiments that we would
follow him anywhere!
Sincerely,
Diane Mooradian

Richard L. McLean Lawrence R. Rank
Richard L. McLean,

2015. A memorial service
honoring his life was held

2015 in Leslie, Michigan.
He was born on October 9,
1962 in Manistee, Michigan, the son of Sharon

50’s Plus Lifestyles
Volunteering can keep 50s plus active and productive
By Pat Maurer
Review Correspondent
Clare County
Senior Services
According the Clare
County Senior Services
2010 annual report, “Volunteering is the practice of
people working on behalf
of others or a particular
cause without payment for
their time and services…
intended to promote good
or improve human quality
of life.”
Life after retirement
doesn’t need to be boring.
Now there is time to help
others.
For example, more
than 100 volunteers help
provide meals, care and
services to the seniors
in Clare County through
Senior Services. “The
Senior Services staff is a
very dedicated, hardworking and talented group of
people.”
Clare County volunteers
not only generously donate
their time, money and
skills,” the annual report
said, “but also make an
extraordinary impact on
those they serve. Through
their dedication, thou-
sands of hours have been
donated to the Senior
Services program by the
home-delivered meals
drivers, congregate meal
site volunteers, medical
transportation drivers and
many others.”
At the recent volunteer
recognition, Clare County
Senior Services Director
Lori Ware said, “Volunteers are special people.
In a busy world they have
time for other people. In
a selfish world they are
givers…volunteers will be
the first to admit that they
too gain from their efforts.
They make new friends
and learn skills they hadn’t
got before. Nice people
volunteer.”
To become one of the
Senior Services volunteers,
call 539-8870.
There are a lot of ways
to “volunteer” in Clare
County.
MidMichigan
Medical Center
There is a wide variety
of ways to volunteer at
MidMichigan Medical
Center including:
Ambassador: Volunteers provide support to
patients during hospitalization by answering general
questions regarding their
hospital stay.
Ancillary: Volunteers
can serve in such areas as
the Emergency Department, the Medical/Surgical
unit, Urgent Care, Pre-Admission and other Medical
Center departments.
Escort: Volunteers assist
patients and visitors in
finding their way throughout the Medical Center.
Gift Shop: Volunteers
sell gift items to visitors
and Medical Center staff.
A Gift Cart service is also
available.
Magazine: Volunteers
provide a magazine loan
service to patients.
Patient Floors: Vol-
unteers assist on patient
floors with a variety of
functions.
Popcorn Committee:
Volunteers make and sell
popcorn daily.
Reception Desk: Volunteers sort mail, relay
messages and direct visitors to patient rooms and
other areas of the Medical
Center.
Transporter: Volunteers
transport patients via
wheelchairs from one hospital department to another.
To find out more visit
the MidMichigan Medical Center website, or call

Social networking, blogging, using computer good for 50s
By Pat Maurer
Review Correspondent
For many, computers are
a great tool that allows you
to have a hobby.
Like to cook? Get some
great recipes off the Food
Channel website.
But that’s not all you can
do with a computer. You
can connect through social
networking websites like
Facebook. It doesn’t cost
anything to stay in touch
and update friends and
family about your life. You
can even share photos and
movies online. There’s no
need to miss a family birthday – you can see a video
of your grandkids blowing
out the candles or opening
your present.
If you want to try something new, there are millions of websites dedicated
to every possible subject.
You can start a brand new
hobby and find all the information you need.
Then there’s blogging.
Share your lifetime of
experience, ideas and opinions with the world – or just
your family. Blogs can be
public or private and a great
was to express yourself.
Go shopping. Have you
ever wanted something
you just can’t find locally?
Chances are you can find
it online and it won’t cost
any gas or time. If you are
a coin collector or looking
for a new great book to
read, there are often great
discounts online. With one
of the new Kindles, you
can even download books,
more than 1,000, and read
them electronically – and
there are loads of classic
stories that cost little or
nothing to buy online.
Don’t have a computer?
Don’t let that stop you.
Our area libraries do have
them and offer free internet
access too. If you are
nervous about learning, or
wonder how much you will
use a computer, start at the
library. You can purchase
later if you really enjoy it.
In Clare at the Pere
Marquette District Library,
there are computer classes
available.
Give them a call to find
out dates and times for
classes. Registration is required call 989-539-6711.

in the division three state
finals. They look to be in
pretty good shape again
this year as they return
seven all-conference runners from last year’s squad.
“We have a hard working team of girls who
continue to get better each
day,” eighth year girls’
head coach Kyle McKown
said. “We have an exciting
mix of new runners that
are mixing well with our
veteran upperclassmen.”
Seniors returning for the
When it comes to cross
country in this area, Clare
just seems to dominate.
Both the girls’ and boys’
teams expect yet another
banner year. Though as
usual they’ll have to work
for it to happen.
The girls team won their
fifth straight Jack Pine
Conference title last year
and also took second at
regionals and finished 15th
Lady Pioneers are Madison
McPhee (all-conference),
Paige Gould (all-conference), juniors Jasmine

Bradley (all-conference).
New to the team are
freshmen Lainey Veenkant,
Olivia Haring and Tarryn
Winter.
“Our kids understand
the commitment that it
takes to be the best that
they can be and they
have been working hard
throughout the summer to
prepare for the upcoming
season,” McKown said.
“We will be working hard
to continue improving as a
team throughout the entire
season.”
While the Lady Pioneers
should be the favorites in
the JPC once again, they
also have bigger aspirations
in mind too.
“Roscommon has a
large and tough program
in the JPC each year and
Meridian will be a program
on the rise this season,”
McKown said. “Our goals
include qualifying for the
state finals as a team and
finishing in the top 10 in
the state. We are in a very
tough region this year so
we will be preparing well
to be at our best when the
end of the season comes.”

The boys had an even
arguably better year last
season. The Pioneers ran to
their seventh straight JPC
championship, their second
straight regional title and
an eighth place finish at the
state finals.
The boys may not be as
jam-packed with returning
runners but that doesn’t
mean they have lowered
their expectations.
“The goals are the same
as always,” eighth year
boys’ head coach Adam
Burhans said. “We want
to retain the JPC title and
qualify as a team for states”
Senior Chase Field

“We are working hard
at being good teammates,
training smart and working
toward achievable goals,”
Burhans said. “Senior
Nick Wertheimer and junior Scotty Baldwin are in
the best pre-season shape
of their lives, so we’re
hoping to see them make
charges soon.”
The Pioneers add three
freshmen to the mix that
will look to crack varsity
spots as well, those being
Davin Good, Aidan Boyd
and Jayce Miller.
“All of them are solid,
very coachable freshmen
who were consistently the
top junior high runners in
the conference,” Burhans
said. “Good and Boyd

Clare soccer looks to take next step
by Ben Murphy
Sports Writer
The Clare soccer team
took a big step forward
in the 2014 season. After
a couple sub-par seasons
the Pioneers climbed back
to the .500 mark and are
hoping to keep the win
totals ticking upwards.
“Last year was a good
season with some of
those losses being close,
one goal games,” 13th
year head coach Doug
Helmling said. “We gelled
as a team and it showed
in our play. My early
thoughts on the team this
year are that we have a
strong group of players
who are eager to take
the team to it’s highest
potential. They all work
for the benefit of the team,
putting the team first is
essential to a successful
campaign.”
Returning from last
year’s team that went
11-11 are seniors Collin
Beavan (defense, first
team all-conference),
Camden Dice (midfield,
first team all-conference),
Alex Dysinger (defense),
Ryan Whiteman (forward,
all-conference) and juniors
Alec Foley (midfield) and
Braeden Werth (midfield).
New to the team are
seniors Peter DeRoche
(defense), Mike Glowniak
(forward), Logan Owens
(midfield), Bobby
Woodman (goalie),
juniors Charles Gray
(defense), Lucas Bongard
(defense), Thadeus Warner
(midfield), Trevor Crowley
(defense), Nik Schlicht
(midfield), Mitch Hilliard
(defense), Ben Mellish
(defense) and sophomore
James Dietsch (defense).
“We have some strong
leaders on the team,”
Helmling said. “Beavan,
Dice and Whiteman have
been on the varsity team
all four years, they are
exceptional leaders who
have earned their stripes. I
think our greatest strength
is our sense of team. With
just six returning players,
our biggest challenge will
be to find that on-field
chemistry which is so vital
in this sport.”
The Pioneers will once
again compete in the South
Division of the Northern
Michigan Soccer League.
“It seems like every
season there are tough
teams,” Helmling said.
“Gladwin is returning
a strong core of players
from last season. McBain
Northern Michigan
Christian has been
developing their program
over the last few seasons
and are always tough. Big
Rapids Crossroads always
seems to field a good side.
It’s anyone’s guess this
early which team is going
to be on top.
“Our team goals are
essentially the same every
year,” Helmling added.
“We take every match one
at a time and work toward
districts. Short term we
want to improve week to
week. If we do that we
will be in contention for
another divisional title
and a spot in the NMSL
championship tournament.
Long-term we shoot for a
district title.”
The Pioneers opened
their season at the Laker
Invitational on Saturday,
going 2-1 on the day.
Clare opened up the
tournament with a 4-0
win over Birch Run, then
topped host Elkton-Pigeon
8-0. The Pioneers had their
lone setback in their final
match, losing to Yale 4-0.
Dice finished the day
with six goals and one
assist, Glowniak had
two goals, Crowley had
one goal and one assist,
Warner had one goal and
one assist, Schlicht and
Werth had one goal each,
Foley had two assists,
Beavan had one assist and
Whiteman had four assists.
John Helmling was in
goal all day and had an
84-percent save rate.
Clare (2-1) is at
Hemlock tonight (Friday)
and opens league play
at Houghton Lake on
Wednesday.
“We are excited about

Alec Foley is one of six returning players out to help the
Clare soccer team to another strong season.
this season,” Helmling
said. “With the numbers
of players who came out
to play this year, we have
ample athletes with some
good skill and soccer
sense. These young men
have put in some extra
training in the off-season,
with several attending
various camps. We’re fired
up to make the most of the
season.”

Returning runners to lead Hornets
by Ben Murphy
Sports Writer
The Harrison cross
country teams will have
just enough runners to fill
out complete boys’ and
girls’ cross country teams,
but the Hornets hope
they’ll get all they need in
the limited numbers.
“As of now, we have
a very small team but I
hope to pick up a couple
more runners for both
once school begins to help
develop more competition
in practice,” head coach
Tod Reeve said. “The
outcome for the season is

and Ray Ramirez return as
well and sophomore Zach
Taylor returns as well.

visible and townships have
hired deputies for extra patrols. “We have a lot of good
young deputies out there,
many more than years ago.”

The story is similar for
other surrounding counties.
Wilson said, “I’m sure
several factors come into
play for the decline in
these accidents. There is
an increased in visibility in
police in Clare County over
these years. We have had
an increased in the hours of
Sheriff Patrols in a couple of
the townships in the county.
One is Hayes and the other
is Garfield. Hayes Township
is the most populated and
Garfield is in the top have for
population. They both have
a higher amount of traffic in
them also.”
He continued, “The average of drunk driving arrests

There have been no traffic
fatalities this year in Clare
County, Sheriff John Wilson
reported Monday.
In fact, Wilson said, “We
have seen a decline in fatal
accidents over the last 20
years. Not including 2015,
in the previous 10 years we
averaged 4.7 fatal accidents
a year. From 1996 through
2005 we averaged 7 fatal
accidents a year. To this date
in 2015 we have not had a
fatal accident. These statistics are actual traffic crashes
where one or more individuals die due to injuries
sustained from the crash.”
According to Sgt. Lance
Cook of the Michigan State
Police, Isabella County
hasn’t been as lucky. He
said, “In 2014, there were
11 fatal crashes in Isabella
County. Two on the freeway,
five in intersections, and four
in other areas. He added,
“For 2015, so far there have
been 11. None on the free-
